I treasure all my books. Each one is a memory I cherish. The weight of it, the feel of it, even the smell of it. Each and every one. Peace.

some time ago I wished to order one book - 1500 pages, 2.5 kg ,17 USD shipping cost to Europe, delivery within 3 weeks. Two days later I received my brand new kindle (from local not authorized reseller). I have this book with me since then most of the time - and a few more..

You can write notes on a Kindle. just not in the margins... But you can underline stuff. And if a book is old enough, you can't drop it without fear of pages falling off.

Imagine what you could hold in your hand as SD cards or a terabyte flash drive. All your music, books, songs, software, photos, notes.... All of it.

@Depoetic2 Except that you can make notes (if not in 'margins'), and also highlight passages, on a Kindle.

This guy hasn't moved yet has he? I'd much rather take my kindle instead of hauling my truck load of books to a new place. Yes books are awesome, but it's more economical and greener( fuel costs/manufacturing processes) to use an ereader. Unabashedly love my kindle.

@GBev2K Yeah, that's a pretty good use for it. I've actually been wondering about getting one that's just a library for job related stuff.

So watching this until the ending, I found it amusing until it turned into an honest don't-convert-to-kindle video instead of a light-hearted joke about the irony of the "features" of kindle. The video points out how we don't want everything to go digital, and we should attempt to move to non-digital/not convert; examples given are books and a dictionary.
Ironic, much, that this was posted to RUclips?
Books were an advancement of technology. Digital media is as well. Just my thoughts.

Good points. But using the OED on kindle is way easier than going to the place you keep your big heavy books.

    1) Books are extremely vulnerable to water. I don't even understand how people actually want to read in a bath tub.
    2) Books tear easily, if you're not careful. You can tear pages even by accident.
    3) Too many books take up too many space, or demand hundreds of pages if I want to print them. I have hundreds of e-books. Printing them all is really impractical.
    4) E-books are cheaper, and easier to distribute. It's also easier to search in them.
negatives: can't take notes on the sides, highlights

@musosian Most precious possession I have is my Grandmother's Bible with her handwriting in the margins. Kindle will NEVER EVER replace books for me.

I have never had a book crash and leave me with empty blue pages of death. I had 3 books and a library as a child while my children had/have about 500 books and a library. I still have two of my books and would not get rid of them for anything but there isn't anything like a good Albert Campion British mystery in bed on a Sunday night. About time for that now.

I saw on TV where they said people miss real books because of the smell. I can understand that. Ever since I was a kid, I have always LOVED to open up a new CD (you know, the music comes in a plastic case with a little booklet?) and I would smell the new booklets and for some reason I LOVED that smell. So, I'm weird, at least I'm not spending a bunch of time and possibly money to make a pointless video like this. ETA: I am not against books OR e-readers, but I AM against peer pressure.

A normal book?? You mean I actually have to get in my car and go get it! Forget it, Jersey Shore's on.

If you don't want to go digital, perhaps you should have recorded this video on VHS. Are you aware that books were a replacement of scrolls? I don't have a problem with books, but my Kindle is what got me reading books again. I find itm uch more conveinent, not in terms of looking up words, but I just like to read in my bed on my side, and just lay still while I read and just press my thumb at the side to turn the page. It's more relaxing that way.

I am a person who had hundreds of books. They take up space and have weight and are susceptible to fire or water damage (firefighting). And may be eaten by mice or insects.
I scanned maybe 20,000 photos and pages of family stuff onto 64GB SD cards. I don't need to photocopy anything and mailing is only a few dollars. Best of all, we in a sizeable family can regenerate our copies if we lose them. It is not likely that a disaster would take out all of North America. I am not sure EMP could do it.

I downsized to maybe 100 physical books and a few hundred electronic books.

  • @TheLuminousCleric

    *too much space, sorry.
For me, a Kindle will just enhance my reading experience, since I have hundreds of e-books that I really don't want to print. Also, I will never be able to afford so many books. I want to read more, and the Kindle doesn't cripple me in that.

Now if they'd just throw the book on the pavement and show how you can pick it back up again and keep going... demonstrate how you cannot throw the kindle on pavement and still have your books! LOL! Show also how you cannot write thoughts in the margins or highlight passages in study materials.

Well, I don't know about you, but I don't give a rat's ass about what people think. I want to buy this so I can read my e-book collection from the Kindle, rather than from my LCD screen. Good day to you, sir!

Yeah, this video was great till you started preaching the evolution of technology is a bad idea. I'd say pure gold till I got to the 2 minute mark. Digital media is just another tool, it doesn't have to replace anything. Instead, it can enhance. If you don't want a digital book, you don't have to buy one? What I did like about this video was how it pointed out the positives of not being digital (don't need wi-fi, don't need battery life). Seems common sense, but may need to be explained...haha
