- I pitch Lance's old Giro Lid and an MDT; (both offering no crash protection at all), against a swimming hat which also (no protection) at all and 2 modern day Time Trial helmets.

What a day to release this video, with V-Lab (Giro) releasing their very own version of a spaceballs helmet
It’s bonkers
Yeah, the Giro is OTT. The UCI seems to be more focused on banning prototype pedals than helmets.
seriously. couldn't plan that. would love to see that monstrosity tested here
@@andrewc662 I assume it's safe but I'm not sure if it's a complete eye sore, or if it's secretely brilliant.
The UCI is the UCI and the C stopped standing for cycling a long time ago
😂😂
This video series are really interest, but I must admit the part I look forward to the most is the ‘big gains’ clip - makes me smile every time
I really enjoy your videos for their technical nature and was looking forward to this series. I thought this would be a series of really useful technical information for us without access to a wind tunnel could use but I don’t understand comparing commuter bikes with kids and tech from 15 years ago does? Am I right that the proper stuff is coming at the end and for the next few weeks it’s just comedy shows and fun stuff for now?
That was doing a disservice to the swimcap. All those wrinkles makes it an invalid test… every swimmer knows wrinkles are slow. Probably worth 10watts plus!
A timed release for the new Giro TT Helmet!!!
Helmet/No Helmet...anyone else thinking Lemond/Fignon?
Only ~7W between the TT5 and a swimming cap!? I cant recall what speed you're testing at, but assuming it is 50/55km/h that would be only ~3.5W difference at 40/45km/h...
I was rooting for the swim cap - shame 😂 Enjoying the insight!
No actually. I made helmet visors for the giro aero head that replaced the one in the video. The new safety version was a huge increase in size if you needed a size large. A fast rider borrowed one of my visors and tested to see how much slower his it would be. It turned out to be 6w better. It was the first suggestion that hiding the shoulders behind the bow wave of a larger helmet was a way forward. This was back in 2009.
Im not looking forward to finding out how slow the red specialized TT helmet tested as thats what i had for my 'fastest' seasons 🤣🤦♂️
Well I guess I’m that guy - New giro helmet looks sick as it looks super quick in head down position
I was rooting for the swim cap / no helmet to be good. Seemed like it placed about where I'd expected it to be, was kinda hoping it would place better but not shocking that it didn't do horribly bad. It will be interesting to see that follow-up video with more helmets and where that places in comparison to regular helmets because that is probably where the swim cap / no helmet is going to shine / have a more neutral impact. I'm also guessing that getting to a more refined TT position and TT bike over the years also leads to a disproportionate evolution in helmets and why they rapidly exploded for modern day TT helmets.
The other big factor that I'm curious about is mountain TTs. We know heads can get sweaty and the mountains provide a tough challenge in assessing the W/kg equation so it would be interesting to see how something like that Specialized balaclava and other TT helmets with a completely closed off lid preventing proper cooling. Been thinking about this ever since that famous Roglic 2020 TDF stage 20 photo.
You really need to comment on the new Giro. Does it make any sense at all?!
Interesting sign-off remarks about a time when helmets went 'backwards' - that was result board wisdom in the mid-2000s when we moved from fairings to the early crash protection. Great stuff - enjoying this series.
You gotta get hold of that helmet
He would look shark... I mean sharp, in one.
I had the MDT back in the day, but only because Hutch had one. it cracked after I dropped it on a damp corner whilst on for a PB (as you do), stilled used for for a while (as you do).
be interesting to see if the aero skin material balaclava was very aero, a club mate used one for years
Shame you couldn't get the actual Lance fairing, though the shark fin was supposedly only for his back shape. I wonder if hair would actually be better than the swim cap, as those folds down the middle look really slow.
little protection anecdote: remember when I bought a used Giro advantage from a friend arround 2010 who cut the ear section off due to comfort issues ... I am still sure that this didn't caused any structural problems at all 😅
Really hoping one of the helmets teased in that upcoming video will be a TT helmet with dimples on the front. Golf-ball tripped airflow on a leading surface..... how slow is it??
Alex. The mdt was a replica of a helmet made by a company called aerodyne in the us. They were brought into the country by my father in 1988. He was given 2 of them
I’ve still got it in my cupboard somewhere
What's the error percentage in those results? The results seem so close but I assume they're more significant than margin of error
What you saying about the new Lotto/Giro shark noise helmet?
I feel like giro have seen your videos and have now felt like releasing their TT helmet which looks optimal for aero position
How fast was the MET Drone in comparison?
I don’t need the swimming cap #shavetheday
According to my calc, 1.7% of 53 minutes is 54 seconds extra, I am not sure how are you calculating 20 seconds extra for "no helmet"... and are the other videos wrong too? I hope I am the one who is wrong though :S
I'm working out how the % change in drag affects time, the relationship isn't a linear one. a 100% drag saving wouldn't mean a time of 0 because of drivetrain efficiency, CRR etc. Best Bike Split is a great tool for seeing the changes which is what I've been using.
@@AlexDowsettOfficial Nice! thank you
On that last thought how do aero helmets compare to normal helmets in crash tests etc. I guess they have to meet the same requirements and that those old helmets (material degradation aside) wouldn’t pass modern tests.
They're just a shell and were rightly marketed as head fairings rather than helmets. Not a prayer of passing the tests.
How is the test done ?
