The C5 is the same so the problem goes back to 97'. Everything looked pretty much the same as I remembered doing on my C5 except I might have removed the radiator for extra room. I didn't have that nice little short puller shown here. 😁

Thanks to both of you!! I would never have had the courage to do this job without such a comprehensive video. Check the HB periodically for straightness during idling and when during slight revs above 1,000 rpms. Any upright, vertical or horizontal wobbling could indicate elastomer seal on balancer. It is a hit or miss on many C6s. I've seen some at your mileage, or seen no issues even at 140,000 miles!!! Go figure....

My cradle didn’t want to drop down either. No clue why. Was trying to find other non painful videos showing what else I might have been missing. This one gives the meat & potatoes.
Engine was disconnected too. Probably the upper A Arms. I disconnected the shocks and it helped a little but still didn’t want to move. Job ended up being more of a pain that it needed to be
I Don't have a lift, after I get everything apart, is it possible to loosen the harmonic balancer bolt from the top?

Definitely not the easiest way to go. Be advised don't take a impact gun to the cradle 😂. You'll regret it.. if its the HB your replacing just remove the inner tie rods disconnect the bolts from the rack bracket and move the damn thing away from the HB. Walla

Am I mistaken or did the replacement Balancer look different, i.e. didn't have the rubber section in it?
yes, aftermarket performance part that should be better than the oem part that has that issue a few years later again..
@@floridrummer88 I was unsure about an aftermarket part and fitted a new oem part instead.
@@skidco1 yes, what i read, the oem parts are crap. But the future will tell. My one is worn out now after 12years of vehicle life. So yours should be also fine for a long time :)
In the Video, shown on 22:38 , he is using a Summit SUM C2501. Thats the one he is using.

@@floridrummer88 My OEM balancer part was 16 years old on 27,000 miles, just small amounts of rubber deterioration but I changed it plus two tensioner arms/guides (one bad) to be on the safe side. Thanks for your input.
I want to ask, do you have to position the damper a certain way when putting the new one on? Not alot of talk on this online... need some help
Nope. There is no keyway.
No way was I attempting this. Dealer cost me $1500 but they sheared two subframe bolts off and had to drill and tap it out so it took them another hour but didn't charge me.
I'm glad that they did good by you..thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe

Is this issue with the harmonic balancer only with LS3 engines?
yesir
LS2 too
Wouldn’t it maybe be easier to pull the motor mount bolts and just lift the front of the motor enough to clear the rack?
is it possible to do that though in this car? I have to look at it..thanks for the tip and don't forget to subscribe
Take Two bolts out for motor mounts. Drop the craddle down by loosen 4 bolts. disconnecting shocks absorber. Push the engine up with jack. That should clear to use a hormonic off. Leave the rack and pinion in with all connections. Also made loosen the top a arms each side 4 bolts each side. And disconnect steering shaft too. Done many times. I am not a mechanic by trade.
@@garybegay3028 Have a video? This sounds like a lifesaver.
@@garybegay3028 When torquing 240 ft/lbs for the new balancer won't everything be moving now that you unbolted from the mounts?
@@DoomXexec311 put everything back together. and retorque the balancer. May have to take out or loosen the two bolts that holds the rack and pinion. It's depend a on what socket you have. It's easier more the with shallow socket, better fit between the balancer and rack and pinion
Hey klowny did you have to have your summit balancer machined to fit the friction washer?

The Balancer, ARP, and new seal around $300-450 but if you get an ATI HB, then it’s like a $500-600 job if you do it yourself. Better than $1300 at the dealer
