Glowforge Tutorial: Removing the Carriage Plate to Clean the Air Assist Without Using Tools

- If you have a Glowforge, one of the things you need to keep clean is the Air Assist Fan.
The Glowforge Support Page has instructions on how to remove the Carriage Plate as well using the same method I do. In the past they used to tell you to use a Allen Wrench to loosen the wheel on the right to remove the belt, but now they teach the same way I always have done it. 🤓
You can see their instructions here:

I'll follow up with another video showing how I clean the Air Assist Fan.

OMGosh! Thank you so very much!!! This is like Magic!! So easy!! THANK YOU!!
Thank you for the informative video. If anyone is having trouble re-seating the belt on the gears after cleaning, I suggest removing the crumb tray for more visibility & leverage. With a little practice, it gets a lot easier - but don't expect it to be as easy as it looks the first time.
You’re welcome! It really varies from machine to machine. My first was really easy, but I have 3 Glowforges and the others were not as easy.
Now that I’ve done it hundreds of times on mine and others, it’s generally really easy.
Thank you! I've been terrified to take my belt off because I didn't think I could get it back on. Easy peasy and the air assist fan is finally clean lol.
That was much easier than I thought it would be. Thanks! My fan was sooo dirty. :)
Glad it helped!
This video was super easy to understand…I was able to remove and clean my fan easily after watching!
This video was so helpful! The way you were able to explain how to get the belt back on was perfect. Thank you!!!
Damn, I wish I had watched your video before I cleaned mine! saw another video that said to loosen screw on right to pop cable off. Don't do it! Took me forever to get it back on and tight. Definitely following your suggestions from now on!
Yup! This is the same way Glowforge recommends on their website.
This made me feel sooooo much better about taking this apart to clean thank you!!
You’re welcome!
Thank you so much! This was SO helpful at 2:30am the morning of a big show I needed to finish items for. Yeah - I'm serious.
Thank you for your video. I have been trying to get this belt back on now for three hours, and your video gives the clearest instructions. I just can't get the belt to ride up my finger to get it on.
Daughter came over and did what you said, and she got it in less two mins. Thank You so very much for another Great video!
I’m so glad! ❤️🙌

I have the same problem but my hubby got it back on 3 seconds!
My mind is blown..!!! It WORKS! And it's SO EASY! Thank you!
I love that! And you’re so welcome!
Thank you Mark for this video, so clear, great instructions!! I'm going to try this later today. If Arthur will leave my hands alone long enough for me to attach the belt, I'll be good! LOL
Bless you! Easiest put on ever!
Saw this on Facebook a few days ago, and I'm making the attempt tonight! Wish me luck!
You got this!
@@BigBlueLaserDesigns I did! Was much easier than I anticipated, thank you so much for this tutorial! It took me awhile to get the belt back on, but now that I've done it once it should be easier in the future!
Need to clean my fan as well, perfect timing on the tutorial!
Wow! Your video is so clear and informative! Now I’m not scared to try! Have you posted the air assist cleaning video?
Wow Mark, that was amazing. Clear and precise. Thank you.
WOW HUGE THANKS for this, you just saved me a lot of money :)
Yay! Glad I could help!
Thank you. Your videos are very clear! I appreciate that. Thank you!!
This really helped me out during busy season thank you!
I’m so glad! ❤️🙌
You saved my day!! Thank you
This was SO helpful! THANK YOU!!
I love to hear that! You are so welcome!
Great video and super helpful!!😊😊
Excellent!
Wow, Thank you!
You’re welcome!
I cannot get that belt back on! I've tried numerous times. It seems I'll need to unloosen the wheel. Maybe the belt is too tight to do it your way? UPDATE: I ended up placing my thumb below the belt and pushed the belt UP with my thumb as I slid the gantry towards the corner. It popped on! YAY!
I just loosen the hex with a 3mm hex key. Basically, 10 seconds to put the belt on and resecure. I spent an hour doing it this way in the video unsuccessfully. My belt was super super tight. My glowforge is basically a year old. I see other videos where they do this method and it pops right on like this one. The belt must stretch over time. Mine wasn't having it.
while it’s possible for the belt to stretch, I’ve never experienced that on any of my Glowforges nor on the dozens I’ve taught people on. I worked on a customer’s Glowforge last week and it was quite tight. I was able to get it off and on since I have so much experience doing it, but the customer wasn’t able to - so she’s going loosen the hex also.
The challenge in doing that is lots of people have trouble getting that wheel back as tight as it should be again.
Ultimately each person should use whatever method that they must.
When Glowforge first came out, they told people to loosen the wheel. But now on their website they also teach to do it the way I’ve been doing it.
Thank you so much. I fear this because my right side gear is stripped and I can’t loosen the belt.
You’re welcome! I’ve had Glowforges for 5+ years and haven’t ever loosened a belt or used a tool to remove the belts. 🎉
I’ve cut a ton of Mdf but been afraid to deep clean like this. My Printer head is so packed with dust. Can I use canned air to clean that?
That’s definitely a good start! But the air assist fan will need some attention for sure as will the main exhaust fan. Be sure to take good care of those. It’s not hard to do, but putting it off will only create more trouble.
@@BigBlueLaserDesigns thank you so much for this video. I faced my fear tonight and took it apart to clean.
I can’t seem to get my belt tight enough. What should I do? 😢
I assume you loosened it to get the belt off? Once you get it tightened again, I don’t recommend loosening it.
Here are the instructions Glowforge provides for tightening it. support.glowforge.com/hc/en-us/articles/360054011474-Adjust-the-Carriage-Plate-Belt-Tension
Why is my glowforge cutting and scoring like Picasso??
