Home Again has been impossible to get on the phone. When trying to update the registration, the site directs me to call. They are one of the lowest rated I have found via reviews online. Thank you for all the work put into this!
We used Michelson Found Animals chips & registry for years at our shelter until it was bought out by 24 Pet Watch a couple years ago 😞 What a mess. When a for-profit company buys a non-profit organization it is seldom good for anyone except for the CEOs & shareholders. We had several months of nightmare where we couldn't register chips, or transfer to adopters; worse, we couldn't get chip registration switched back to us when an adopter returned the animal. I found FreePetChipRegistry & started registering all new animals with them. After a few more months I was able to go into our 24 account & delete all our shelter animals from there & then registered them to FPCR. It was tedious and time consuming, but our animals are no longer being held hostage by a company that was gouging everyone. We had a couple times where owners surrendered their pets & 24 PW wanted to charge our shelter $25 to transfer the chip, then planned to charge new adopters the same price to register their new pet. What a racket! I noyiced that 24PW didn't make it to your list.
I had the same experience with 24Pet! I always recommended Found Animals in the past before this happened. Inexplicably 24Pet combined my personal account with the business account for the nonprofit I manage. Some of the pets disappeared from the list and bizarrely I am unable to update or even view my contact info! I switched over to Free Pet Chip Registry.
My dog has 24 hour Pet watch microchip I got him from SPCA do think their is a way I can change his microchip to another company or should I keep the one he already has. (I only have one doggo and he's my ESA)
I am a new shelter pet owner. I had no idea there is several registries. I registerd with petkey.. then I got a letter from shelter saying to register with homeagain. the chip number would not go into the registry and the number I was to call never answered the phone. I did change my pets name from the shelters name. Thank you for educating me on this.
You're welcome! You can choose any registry you want. If you registered the chip with Petkey you are covered. Just be sure to read the fine print about charges and renewals. While some charge a one-time fee for registration, they will not "un-register" if you don't pay the yearly fees. Those are usually for premium services like the 24 hour call center, lost pet alerts, etc.
We just got the sweetest rescue cat from a local rescue organization. He is Homeagain microchipped. Do I need to initially enter all my info with Homeagain, or can I do it anywhere? I think right now the microchip is registered under the rescue organization.
So i have a chip from 24petwatch and the cheapest registry i see for just the basic owner information is 120bucks. I can register a 24petwatch chip with one of these companies? Now if the 120 bucks offers a much better finder process i will surely pay it for my crazy husky lol i was just curious . If it is no better then other brands i will just use one of the cheaper 20-40dollar companies... thanks for the informative video
Yes, you can register your chip with any company. Sometimes the paid options offer more service like a live call center versus internet only. Carefully read what each offers before paying. Most registries have a free option, and often you can upgrade after your pet gets lost.
I was hoping you have a video on the best scanners to purchase for the public. I know they are different from what the veterinarian gets and I understand that a lot of these scanners on Amazon don’t scan every chip manufacturer
DO NOT use HOME AGAIN her #2 pick of best because it is nothing except the worst. I have tried for 3 months to speak with someone and NO return calls, emails, and they do not answer phones!!!!! chipped my pet and I havent been able to register him as of yet!!!
So i get my cat chipped, and the vet or me goes to that site to register, but its only on that one site and will not show up at any of the other unless i go to the site and type it in and pay any fees? Guess the govment needs to make a law that all chips get crossed referenced or all chips go into one system.
You can get basic registration for free at many of the registries. See the list in the written article that accompanies this video. firststreetpets.com/which-pet-microchip-registry-is-the-best/

@MrUpsidedowngaming you're welcome! I try my best to research and share information on the confusing world of pet microchipping.
I had the same result with home again,
Hey thanks for taking the time and trouble to gather and share this info!
cheers
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for the info! I thought microchip ID is tied with the initial company. So glad that I saw your video before renewing the contract!
You're welcome! Glad to help. Be sure to see my other content on microchipping and other kinds of pet ID. firststreetpets.com/category/microchipping/
Yes, My vet had no idea abou different registries. Said it's all with the original microchip company.

@@TannerJesse-tk5ml you can register with any registry. I highly recommend Buddy ID. There is a charge but it is for lifetime membership. buddyid.com/
Thanks for sharing

How frustrating! FYI you can use any registry even if you have a Home Again chip. The one I currently recommend is Buddy ID
My local shelter used a home again chip. I cant get in touch with home again either.

Do any of the sites show the name and phone number of the owner or do we always have to go through a vet if we find a cat?
The sites do not share sensitive information publicly. If you call or email the registry they will contact the owner and get the two of you in touch.
if you find a pet with a chip, you might have to search 30 sites and some of them charge to look up or make you make an account?
Petmicrochiplookup.org will tell you which registry to call. You do not have to pay or set up an account to search the chip of a found animal.
@@FirstStreetPets thanks, i bought a scanner today so i can scan any stray animals that show up at my house
How old is the microchip id company
According to their website they have been around for 25 years.
@@FirstStreetPets do you think they'll stick around

Yes anyone can implant the microchip in the US.
its all money making just another was to get your dollars 💵💵 just sayin
Good point. If you're going to spend money make sure you're getting something of value from it.
