  • Today we are fixing the cooling system in your fridge (or fan) that causes lots of noise and lots of headache. Although this is something that may seem complicated, it is really easy to do, so DO NOT go call a engineer to come fix it. (May have to dry off the fan or replace)

Another thank you. Five months ago was our first encounter with this freeze up problem and your video was our guide to fixing it. I posted then a thank you. Well, I'd been pretty good about doing Forced Defrosts but got sloppy and it froze up again. This time the first clue was that the water would not dispense. Thankfully I'd saved you video and a quick refresher showed me where all the tabs and screws were. It's so great that there are people like you who've taken the time to create videos like this. So, once again - thanks you.

Thank you! I was going nuts trying to figure out how to release the bottom tray (without ripping the whole filter housing out). Between this icing problem and the issues with the ice maker, I find this refrigerator to be a very expensive POS. I have to deice the ice maker about once a month. I've replaced it twice in 3 years. Thanks to people like you, I don't have to wait a week or two and pay high service fees. So again, thank you.

  • @Warrantone1

This works on mine. It is a lot easier than emptying out the fridge and sticking a hair dryer in there.
    1. Touch freezer and lighting buttons at same time and hold about 10 seconds.
    2. Screen goes blank.
    3. Touch freezer button repeatedly until "rd" appears. Apparently this means "refrigerator defrost". Fan stops running and apparently a heating element is activated to melt ice around the fan. This also starts a beeping countdown.
    4. After 20 minutes the unit resets. If you still have the noise, run another cycle. Eventually it goes away.
Icemaker and freezer do not appear to be affected by this, only the ice around the noisy fan. In addition, turn off your energy saver feature. My guess is the energy saver is some gimic that turns off equipment to prevent condensation from forming. That condensation might, in part, be what becomes the ice that the fan hits. Get rid of the condensation and it might, along with this procedure, take care of the problem. It works for me.

Excellent walkthrough. I have the exact same model refrigerator and the fan started to get really loud. The fan blades were hitting an ice buildup at the top of the cooling coils. Not sure why ice would buildup there since there was no ice below and no apparent drain blockage.

My fan went out and fridge wouldn't get colder than 55. I ended up ordering a new fridge due to so many problems I had with my samsung (ice maker and other issues). I decided to take apart the samsung to see if I could fix it. The factory fan was like 100 dollars IF you could find one. So for kicks I ordered a 3 wire PC fan off amazon that was 92mm .16amp. PV902512L - FAN DC12V 0.16A, 3-WIRE, 92x25mm. Cut the factory clip off and solidered it onto the new fan. Put everything back together and has been working without problems.

the only thing is I didn't have to remove white clips that hold the glass in it's frame on the big bottom shelf. I snapped one of trying to get it off, but then realized it's not necessary to remove. Everything else went great and according to plan.

Thought I'd share a tip. After doing everything you showed in your video, the cover would not easily come free so figured there was still plenty of ice behind there. We left the power off and doors open over night. Wa La, cover came off nicely and all the ice was gone. We used the cool setting on the hair dryer to flow the remaining water off and it went down the drain as it should, so we knoe the drain was OK. The next thing was to see if the fan was working OK . . . huummmmmmm. Here is the TIP: I put a flashlight in the bottom of the refrigerator, started a movie record on my smartphone, and put it behind the top of the coils pointing at the fan, and closed the doors. Sure enough I had a little movie showing the fan working. Thanks again for taking the time to share this video.

Thanks for this. Your video (plus a couple of others and a few forum entries) helped me solve the problem, at least temporarily. I've written a complaint email to Samsung Canada on the subject as it seems hundreds of thousands of folks have had the same problem with their fridges. I'm going to write some appropriate reviews on reviewing sites in order to warn prospective buyers. I would encourage everyone here to do so also. Unless customers apply pressure, the company won't do anything to solve the problem long term.

I want to that the producers of this great how to video with step by step instructions that are easy to follow. The only thing I hadn't done before starting the removal process was shut my fridge down overnight which I recommend because it would've saved some time. Its really important not to force the panel off because it could be holding the panel to the coil and if you break the coil you are looking at buying a new fridge. These fridges have a defrost for the coils but my problem was a little higher at the point where the coils come from outside to inside the fridge. A huge piece of ice formed and after opening it up it took about 15 minute with a hair dryer to melt it enough to remove it. Again patience is the key don't force anything.

It’s a level issue. If you open the bottom freezer door you’ll see the adjustable legs. Turn each side counter clockwise until you see the wheels leave the ground. About half inch or so. Do not touch the rear legs!! With the front of the fridge leaning back it will help the melting ice drain better when the fridge goes into automatic defrost. Trust me it’s not a bad fridge. The thing will last forever. It’s just a level issue that Samsung never recommended in their installation guide.

You’ve got ice build up because, most likely, your defrost heater isn’t working. I had the same problem. Had to buy a new one. £80!!! (The Heater sheath was working but the little black thermostat connected to it was faulty. So it wasn’t switching it on. I could do it manually by pressing two of the buttons for 6 seconds)
It also does a self diagnostic and will tell you what’s wrong with it.
Keep the top two buttons pressed for 8 seconds until it beeps twice.
If there’s a fault it’ll give you a fault code number, which you can look up in the manual, to see what part it corresponds to.
    Great kid by the way!

Craig Baskerville don’t unplug it. It has what’s called a force defrost mode. By pressing the freezer button and lighting button at the same time and holding for 15 seconds. The fridge will beep. Once it beeps push the freezer button until you see the letters pD. Power defrost. You might have to do that procedure twice to melt most of the ice off the coils. The defrost lasts 20 min. Once you do that, then you can follow these guys’ video tutorial.

Note to DIYers, Just watch the screw placement - took me two tries to get back buttoned up. I should have been more careful with the center rack. Also my top screw was really corroded.

Ron .C your problem is going to persist. This video was not a permanent fix. If you don’t want the problem to reoccur than I suggest you open the bottom freezer door and look for the adjusting legs and raise the front part of the fridge ONLY!!!! Raise the legs until the wheels of the fridge are about a half inch off the ground. By turning the adjustable legs counter clockwise using a flathead screwdriver or a pair of pliers.

You mentioned there is a self-clean mode - is that supposed to defrost the ice build up in there automatically and is there a way to turn self clean mode on?

Here is an easy but temporary fix for noise caused by fan blades hitting ice build-up (temporary, since it treats only the symptom of Samsung's flawed design, rather than the cause). You don't need to remove food or even open the fridge: Simultaneously press "Freezer" and "Lighting" on front panel of fridge and hold (8 seconds on my fridge) until it beeps. Release, and press "Freezer" repeatedly (three times for my model) until it displays "rd" (rear defrost). This manually activates the rear defroster, and your fridge will beep annoyingly for awhile (about 27 minutes on my fridge). I usually repeat this process 4-6 times in a row, setting my phone timer for 27 minutes to keep reminding me to go and restart it. This fix usually lasts me a couple of weeks. If you remember to do it frequently, on a preventative basis--say, before going to work or to bed, you may stay ahead of the problem.

Nice job on the video gentlemen. That helped us a lot. Samsung should thank us all for field testing their design.

Hey! There may be an easier way to do this. Hold the freezer and light buttons together for about 10 seconds to open the sub menu. Once it beeps, hit the freezer button until it says “rd” - not sure what it stands for, but it activates a heating element back there. It lasts for about 20 minutes, and beeps the whole time. No need to take anything out of the fridge, it will stay cool. You may have to run it twice, but it’s a quick fix to save your fan if you don’t have time to empty your fridge. And do not poor beer in the fridge drain...

I did this like four times and my fix only lasted a day. I may do this as preventative maintenance but had to take it all apart to get noise to stop and clear ice buildup

Hi everyone. I had this fridge since 2016. I have been breaking up ice so many times in ice container. I finally called samsung. They came to my house and replaced ice maker no charge. They are aware of factory defect/recall. Problem Solved. New problem I have ice build up on rear coil sometimes. Running defrost as we speak. Good luck

Great video. I see there are over 355 thousand views which tells you that this is a major design flaw by Samsung. It seems that there should have been some sort of class action lawsuit by now. When you call Samsung, they pretend they have no idea this is a common issue. The ice will build back up again. You can level it and maybe that might help but the real problem is the location of the drain and the fact that it holds condensation.I tiny drain is not enough. ASrent there any class action attorneys looking into this?

This is not a long term solution but I will provide one. I believe the cause of this issue is moisture entering the fridge (warm room air) from poor seals. Over time the design of the French door fridge lends to seal issues. Once the moist warm air enters the fridge, it condenses on the evaporator and in other spots. On my fridge, I have noticed condensation leak out when you fill your glass with water or ice from the dispenser.
The long term fix is to help the fridge defrost the evaporator. I increased the fridge temperature from 36 to 40 deg F and problem has not returned. I have tried many things and defrosted the fridge 3-4 times. Today I checked the evaporator (removing all components like this video) and NO ICE buildup whatsoever after 2 months. I also kept the freezer at 0 deg F and turned the meat drawer to a lower temp to better preserve more vulnerable food (meat, cheese, etc.)
Regarding seal issues, for now I think they are minor leaks. It's hard to tell where the seal issue is. It could be where the door meets the dispenser (hole for ice to shoot through inside door), door perimeter or back panel where piping/electrical penetrates. Regardless the temperature increase has fixed the ice buildup.
I do not think raising the wheels or doing a forced defrost are long term solutions. These are suggested on other videos.
    Hope this helps!

Do you know about the defect in these Samsung models that cause the ice maker to stop working and for the ice machine to over freeze? Sears came out and said it's a known issue but Samsung will not do a recall. So it costs you close to $700 to fix.

    • @tefixers9158
      @tefixers9158  5 лет назад

Lady Godiva yes! I assume you are talking about the ice maker freezing up and not being able to produce ice or become opened up? If so then I will make a video on it!
