Torque Wrench Calibration: • DIY Torque Wrench Cali...
This is a step by step on how to check/adjust your valve lash on a 2003 Cummins. Most other year will fallow the same procedure but may have their own small differences. Check your service manual for more information.
Intakes need to be between 0.006 - 0.015, if the lash is not within those setting you need to adjust to 0.010.
Exhausts need to be between 0.015 and 0.025, if the lash is not within those settings you need to adjust to 0.020.
The tighter the gap the more your valve will open. Too much and performance will suffer and you will damage you valve on the piston =)

A small correction. TDC on #1 Compression stroke will give you adjustment access to the intakes on #1,2, and 4; the exhaust on 1, 3, and 5. Then TDC on the #1 exhaust stroke will get you to the intakes on 3, 5, and 6; the exhaust on 2, 4, and 6. This is an excellent video from 2013, but I wanted to add this note to prevent others from trying to make this adjustment at BDC. Best regards.
Dude where have u gone? you are hands down the best Cummins how to on RUclips !!! your channel should be huge for the help you provide the Cummins community!!
Oyou
Dude, you seriously have the most thorough videos ive ever seen before. Checking valves and stuff made me nervous before but now it doesnt seem so bad, mostly if you just take your time and go slow enough you really shouldnt have any issues.
I just bought a 2003 cummins HO with the nv5600 in it. Your videos are so awesome! I think some of my injectors are clogged and your injector video was so intuitive and gave me the inspiration to do it myself! Thanks man!
Excellent!.
Gentleman, scholar, and GOOD MECHANIC! You guys are in high demand. Thank You for your time and instruction.
Dude this is THE best channel for how to videos like this! Just got my first cummins, an 03 as well, and this watching these has already given me some great tips!!!
Man your videos help me out a lot. If you have not done it already you should do a video on the importance of the type of oil to use and how to change it and the filters. Thanks for the knowledge
Great how to video. Love the instruction and camera work. You need to do a lot more of these. and deeper into the motor. These are great, and you have a talent for this type of instruction. Well done!
For 2006 5.9L exhaust adjustment is a little different in a Service Manual. MIN 0.021in - Max 0.034in and it says when adjusting set it to 0.026in. Intake is the same as in the video
That is what the local injector shop told me too
thanks for this video. got to replace my injectors this weekend so i was gonna do valve lash while i had everything apart. I'm gonna use all this info to get the job done.
Really great video, attention to detail and making it look easy.
Yea thats a great idea to do! Thanks for watching!
injector stud post NEVER HAVE 90Volts! Injectors fire at .5volts. Cant get power to them with out the key on.
great video. lots of good information, great camera work. best how to video ive seen in awhile!
very good description, very educational, thanks
Thanks for watching! More projects to come.
I'm sure this is the same for my 04.5 thanks for the indepth video
Nice job! Confidence inspiring to all.
Thanks =) Naw, Im only pushing 40lbs right now and the stock springs are good up to low 50's so really not needed right now but once I change the turbo out or add a 2nd Ill def upgrade =) One step at a time.
great video! just help walk me through my first valve adjustment on mine. motor runs like new again! 🍻
good vid bud as always :-) im surprised well you were in there you just did not change over to 60lb springs.
I just put on new head gasket for my 2000 dodge cummins and injectors and pushrods and as I am adjusting rocker arms noticed my number 3 pushrod is so tight wont move free no matter how much I backed it off is it suppose to be like that and yes I have it TDC
Do you have a before and after video of what it sounded like
Great video! Can't wait to see the next project.
your welcome! btw i wanted to ask is it really any different to check a 12 valve just different clearances and such?
Can the valve cover breather be clean or do I need to replace it at 230k
Is that .010 inch and .020 inch OR .010 mm and .020 mm?
Intake range, 0.006" - 0.015" and exhaust range 0.015" - 0.030", not mm.
Why did you remove the air filter housing?
The differences are minimal but same principle. Remove cover, find TDC, set valve lash, rotate engine, complete the rest of the valve lashes, put covers back on. =)
Dumb question, but I'm replacing my injectors now, and all my injectors are out and i never went to tdc in the beginning. Is that going to be an issue? Could I mess anything up when going to tdc before doing a valve last?
You will not mess anything up. Throw em in. Adjust them and turn the key.
Yes but the stock is modified, baffle taken out and silencer removed, so for now it will do =)
you're awesome man !
thanks very much well done and presented.
Is this the same procedure for a 2002 24 valve W/ the VP44?
nice video. doing one now with 350,000
Appreciate the video. Subbed
So check the valves by cylinder order 153624 or 123456?
• Order of adjustment
o 1, 2, and 4-cylinder intakes can be adjusted at the same time, then check exhaust on 1, 3, and 5
o Rotate engine 360 degrees
o 3, 5, and 6-cylinder intakes can be adjusted at the same time, then check exhaust on 2, 4, and 6
Taking the baffles out is a great move, I am running a stock intake with no baffles, and a 4" Mopar filter in my stock box. It flowed enough air for 692HP. aftermarket intake filters allow dirty air by.. don't believe the hype.
The after market setup is still useful but not high on the priority list lol
8:23 You said to rotate the crank 360 degrees, did you mean 180 degress?
No 720 degrees of crank would be 1 cycle for each cylinder. He was saying you might be tdc for exhaust. You adjust tdc of compression, both I and E closed
+David Miller Cool thanks!
Fantastic
Thank you!
great video! as usual....
If your asking if I am ASE certified the answer is no.
Now some may be asking why rotate 360. fellas that's cause the cam only rotates 180 degrees when the crankshaft rotates 360.
Yea not a big deal but I take my time so I can explain it =)
Yea yo good
You need a new intake bud that stock ones restrictive
I know you posted this comment 6 years ago, but it could possibly still be passing false information. Do some up to date research
Holy shit buddy!!
Did you really just say... Shit aint that serious... While using a torque wrench on a valve cover?
He did, and he's correct, set them to the torque and move on with the work.
why say .00 this, or .00 that??, isn't it thousandths?
he said it that way for novice at home mechanics. he said it in vid...
Yes thousandths thank you, we learned that in 5th grade. But they probably ain't teaching stuff like that anymore.. Lol
bhahaha ;)
this procedure is also known as a tune-up lol it would have been a lot easier to just call it that...
Not sure how or why you are calling a valve adjustment a tune-up. Hmmmm
