I saw Black Adam in the theater and the ONLY way I was able to enjoy this movie, was "turning off my comic book part of my brain," that knows the history of Black Adam character. He was not acting like Black Adam he was acting like The Rock. He didn't commit to the role even down to Black Adam's trademark pointy ears. This movie took to long to come out and, if they were smart, Black Adam would have been an end credit scene/ cameo to the first Shazam movie. Then Shazam 2 would be Shazam vs Black Adam. That is how you build up interest in the characters. But the problem is they let The Rock dictate the direction of the movie (just like Margot Robbie in Birds of Prey another flop). They need someone in charge not the actors.
Why are people in the industry so afraid to say this movie was trash? It was not good. There was no plot. There was no true understanding and integrity Teth-Adam as a character. There was no true effort to make it a villain movie.
@@maxpops8427 I certainly won’t belittle anyone who saw it and had fun. I’m glad that they did. As a fan of the actual character I just know what kind of movie and story it should’ve been. Dwayne had 15 years to help develop a story for the movie and to gather enough understanding of the character and turned in the most generic of films while making these grandiose claims about it. After my severe disappointment and his low effort performance I’m glad he wasn’t rewarded for that by it’s box office showings. Not wishing failure on anyone but mediocrity shouldn’t be rewarded.
At this point it doesn’t matter if this film made money or not because Black Adam is already streaming this Friday on HBO Max which is a sign indicating that the movie didn’t make the amount of budget they wanted at the box office
It’s high time they stop paying actors lottery wins for every movie. It’s grotesque and they don’t need it. The studios should all agree so there’s not a bidding war. Then, pay the writers more to get a decent story and script!!
Hollywood is run by attorneys not studio execs, just like literally everywhere else that matters. It could conceivably happen but working out the details would take so many years and be fought against so hard by actors, agents, etc. It's hard to see it actually happening in our lifetime.
'Need' is not a factor. There is lots of money going around and they want their share, or else... because there is always somebody doing the math and offering more. Salary inflation. 🤷🏻♂️
He should just let it pass, but his ego unfortunately won’t let him. Honestly this whole Black Adam thing has felt like a big ego trip. Him parading around like he is running the future of the DCEU. Rocky has a lil too much dip on his chip
The Rock does have a massive ego to except failure of any kind, or play the villain to a hero he should be against like Shazam. It's obvious Black Adam's performance has hit him hard personally. His twitter since Black Adam release, literally reacting to any article against Black Adam for damage control.
@@jonfreeman9682 If he were actually passionate about his craft, he'd rather focus on making the best film possible instead of elevating his own stature and ego. Rock famously had a no loss contract in fight scenes in fast and furious. He tries to bring his own pro wrestler mentality in Hollywood which just won't work, especially in ensemble productions like Black adam.
@@ameysingh997 Yeah, we see Ryan Reynolds' passion for Deadpool and Dwayne Johnson's "passion" for Black Adam is nowhere near that. Honestly, it's really more so about how much money Dwayne Johnson can make off of it than bringing the character to life onscreen in the best possible way.
I can't explain it, but I saw this coming. Not exactly like this, but that he was full of it. And doesn't suprise me for whatever reason. And I like him. But I just felt something off about it.
He got the information from the financial guy & said he waited until the last minute for confirmation before he shared the news & deadline information. In the end, I'm starting to think he's regretting getting involved with WB to begin with. This entire thing has been an absolute mess. The fact that this movie took 15 years to come to fruition, Superman (who I'm not even a fan of) sat on the sidelines for half a decade in their own universe, among the other crap WB has pulled with DCEU. Maybe Gunn can save this mess, but the movie isn't to blame for it's lack of success. It's primarily due to boneheaded executive decisions that have killed fan interested in DCEU.
He hasn’t worn out his welcome I don’t think but I think it’s obvious he can’t draw a giant box office in spite of a bad movie by himself. If you look back through his career he has a lot of movies that make respectable amounts but then he has occasional movies that have huge spikes such as the fast and furious movies or jumanji movies. But while this movie failed you have another like red notice that Netflix says did its highest viewings. So it just seems hit or miss. I think his issue is that he does so many movies (he does like two to theee a year, every year) that I think people just don’t have that need to see things he’s in. While other major actors take some time between roles so when they’re in something again you’re really excited to fo see it because you haven’t seen them in awhile.
I always say that the best judge of someone’s character is how they handle losing. Dwayne Johnson has shown before he doesn’t particularly handle losing very well. He had shown that before on the Baywatch movie. I think he behaved that way to a lesser extent with Skyscraper.
100%. It’s easy to consistently post videos of “good deeds” on instagram but the guy cannot resist spinning things to fit his narrative. Who cares if critics trashed Baywatch? Let it go.
This is beyond embarrassing for him. Talking all that mess before the movie was even released about how he was gonna take over DC, and now that he’s been embarrassed in front of his peers, he’s desperately trying to make himself look good. Problem is, he’s revealing himself to be incredibly insecure. This is like erasing the D on your report card and writing in an A+.
Johnson needs to keep his mouth closed. He basically claimed that Warners had no interest in bringing back Superman and he forced them to do it. Now he's claiming stats and figures that are easy to do shoot down, against Warner and DCs wishes. He isn't helping his future chances in the DC franchise right now.
It was so unnecessary. This was the same guy praising Wakanda to make it seem like there’s no competition and he’s all about love and support. Yet he had to drag a 11 year old movie to make himself feel better about how bad his own movie was, how sad!
@@reannagordon I just don't understand why he thinks black adam is an a list comic book villian on top of that it's like the rock isn't even interested in fighting Shazam his actual nemesis lol

Honestly with the way he was coming after Warner Bros-talking up about changing the regime, the new structure of power, going after Studio execs, and just putting his face out there as if he was the new of DC-I think this movie not exceeding expectations is killing his ego. It's that old wrestler Showmanship and bravado that he carries into every single film that he works on. He wanted to be James Gunn/Peter Saffron, it didn't work out, and neither did his film. Rather than potentially damaging his brand, he just take the L and move on. Because now this is just getting embarrassing.
The rock needs to get over the fact that his baby lost money. He needs to just get over it and move on but the fact that he can’t accept it it’s just making him look bad
Considering it took a decade to come to screen, Black Adam felt half baked. It's a shame I thought Shazam was a good movie, and was setting up a good corner of the DCU, I thought Black Adam would expand this and then link in with a VS movie of some sort or a linked series of sequels. But after seeing Black Adam it is clear Dwayne had too much sway, and turned it into something akin to what Sony would turn out for the Spiderman universe. I really wanted to like the movie but as I sat in theaters I couldn't believe that they made such a schlocky movie. It's a shame. Hopefully Shazam 2, will right the ship but maybe it's too late for that. The only issue with Shazam 1, is they have now given it strong ties to the existing universe, with the headless superman clearly meant to be Cavill and the batarang clearly meant to be Afflecks, that it may become casualty of a reboot. If they had kept things slightly more distant maybe they could have folded it in seamlessly, to whatever the new thing is. But right now I'd say it's at risk.
Me and my family went to see it opening weekend. When Henry Cavill showed up one girl and me were the only ones clapping 😂. The theater was almost full.
Start with a $150,000,000 Superman or Batman reboot. Layer in a new Wonder Woman. That is where I feel you have to start. I don’t know if you can do a Justice league movie for $150 million. Reboot the main three, and maybe add side heroes in the main three reboots.
Good, I did not like the whole "The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change" talk...you got the Trinity (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman), they ARE the hierarchy of power.
Good god, can we just accept that Black Adam lost money and move on? Why are we continuously searching for these conspiracy theories that reveal maybe it wasn’t a money loser after all? It just was ok
The failure of Black Adam is both DC and Rock. Why did they attempt to make a "C list" character a lead in the DCEU? Even Shazam wasn't in the forefront of DC! DC fans are familiar with Black Adam however he wasn't a constant mentioned character. Should've been a bulid-up so others outside of DC fandom can get familiar with him, the starpower of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson wasn't enough.
DC superhero movies having disappointing results has happened a number of times really. DC movies just don’t always seem to appeal to people like marvel does. But I don’t think this result should be super surprising. Shazam didn’t do big money either, and it had half the budget. I think they must’ve assumed DJ would somehow just make it a big revenue movie. But lately he really hasn’t been doing that.
@@Matt-cr4vv Shazam was still profitable, it may not be a top tier movie but it broke even enough for them to do a 2nd flim. DC in general is ........... I don't even have the words to say that you haven't been heard already, personally to me I love the emotional depths they use in DC animated flims to bulid-up stories and character. I think if they monetize off the emotional aspects of their stories then it would possibly work for them.
I don’t think John understands just how much they were banking on Black Adam to be a mega hit. These high expectations/hopes met with the trifling reality is why these conversations are being had, it’s not rocket science 😂
Yeah, but there are plenty of movies that they were banking on being big hits but ultimately disappointed yet the people involved didn't dwell on it. Dwayne Johnson is dwelling on it because he's not very graceful at handling losing.
@@jaybling6687 sure but what you fail to take into consideration is tht Black Adam was the current DC’s last Hail Mary. A vehicle that was essentially a launching pad intended to propel the current DCEU forward. With it failing miserably they now see it’s best to cut their losses and start anew which is exactly why Cavil is out
This is clearly a brand DJ thing. The film is undoubtedly losing money theatrically. It may eke out a profit with home video and ancillary earnings, but it is not a success story. Even the Deadline article which had originally claimed the profit, mentioned tv and home video earnings as part of the revenue stream. I get why he's doing it because his brand does get affected if he has a flop and this film has been marketed as a venture that he was very involved in, but its not a good look.
Dwayne Johnson's contract probably lets him get a cut of the residuals. So Dwayne would want the movie to be profitable so he gets paid, the studio would want to say that the movie made no money so they don't have to pay Dwayne. There is an added issue with WB because they have a huge amount of debt, $47 billion. They want to write off as many things as they can so they can avoid taxes and find ways of paying down their debts.
It seemed to me that the Rock thought he would be the leader, president, ceo or the Feige of DC Studios, which was quite laughable from the beginning. This man acts like Black Adam is Superman’s biggest enemy and not Lex Luthor. Shazam doesn’t exist in his mind.
I saw it in the theater and enjoyed it, but I watched it again on HBOmax and enjoyed it a lot less. There's just a lot that doesn't work. I'd say most of the characters and cast after rewatching it I'm including Dwayne Johnson. He's just not right for this part. Pierce Brosnan was really the only bright spot.
Dwayne has to realize he's not as big of a movie star as Tom Cruise. His work is great but seems like he appears in way too many different things and does more quantity as opposed to Tom Cruise who puts his all into fewer films and more selective with the films he makes.
Dwayne Johnson is a huge movie star who can carry a movie. Jumanji made a billion and Hobbs and Shaw made $700 million. So with the right material it works. Black Adam is third rate superhero so takes time to build it up.
Superhero movies ar a different game. Even Cruise as a superhero could flop in a terrible movie...The Mummy.... The Rock is the biggest sure boxoffice draw today. He just isnt cut out for being a superhero, he is already one. Now as a straight Thano or Killmonger like villian, he would be great
Personally, I though he had too much involvement with Black Adam. I understand rallying for it but once the green light was given he would have been better off staying in the "Actor's lane". Don't put any input on the story or whatever. I feel like he just had too much say so on a subject he knows little about. Which is making a successful comic book based movie. It's time he "knew his role", electrifying entertainer. Which doesn't mean you know what makes a good movie. You know how to be Dwayne/The Rock on camera, which is great. Be a businessman, actor, showboat and etc. Leave the story and character development to the pros. Much like Ryan Reynolds he should not have a lot of input on the plot of Deadpool movies going forward. The first one was great, but the 2nd one lost the balance the 1st had.
If only he ACTUALLY WORKED on his acting and worked on getting and investing in some really good writers that would put the black Adam story together and at wrote better lines for ever character to tell a really good story the KID and his mom were the worst part of the film they dragged it down hard?! Poor directing and lines he had 15 years to do that and he didn’t he tried to get the action to sell the movie but this ain’t the 2000s anymore smfh he need to check himself at the door

Black Adam lacked the most important thing missing is so many of these movies... Good writing and sense. Most of it was lazy writing... copy and paste ideas and just trying to do a cash grab.
It was edited within an inch of its life and music would not stop playing through. That was my main issue. The centerist political propaganda part of the script also made all of the writers sound like infants. Two sides? Why not THE MIDDLE. Like “the middle” is some grand revelation? Idiots.
To me, Black Adam ran into the same problem that Fox did when they made Mystique the main character of the X-men movies. You don’t build your movies around the actor, you build your movies around the character. Nobody was asking for this except the Rock. I guarantee you that they had no intention of making this movie until the Rock wanted to do it. Black Adam is derivative character from another characters stories (Shazam) who most people still don’t know that well and who’s movie even though well received still didn’t do all that much. Focus on properties like Green Lantern, Teen Titans etc. properties that people actually know of and are a part of DC stories. Black Adams not even really a major character in the comics in the grand scheme of things.
Yes! built a movie around and actor is fatal, even more when it's established how their powers worked. Like on X-men, taking away Rouge storyline was a mistake, and would had made more sense that Mystique died sacrificing herself in order to save Rouge and giving the heroes more time...
A person with atleast a little knowledge on economics will know how much of a dumb idea it is to compare a 2011 movies revenue to a 2022 movie revenue. That's just so dumb. Have theses actors ever gone to school?
Prob not happening. Even if this thing makes a profit the studio isn’t gonna be jumping to dedicate another $200M budget for a sequel on a movie that didn’t make a big profit.
I just don’t get the hype for the Rock. He literally does nothing but smoulder in every movie. Black Adam was his chance to show us more yet it was more of the same. It’s boring.
After this I've lost all respect for DJ. Now I can see why Vin Diesel and Kevin Hart, having issues with DJ, behind closed doors. Will never the JSA again unless it's in the cartoons or TV shows.
Yeah. LOVE The Rock!!! I REALLY do. But, honestly...he REALLY needs to stay out of the financials. I also had issues with Black Adam. But, in the end: it was A VERY enjoyable movie. 🤩🤩🤩♥️♥️♥️🎬🎬🎬
I feel like The Rock is going through the five stages of grief & doesn’t realise it, coz man it’s getting tough to watch him distance himself from reality since Black Adam bombed
I’ve never seen this sort of haggling over a movie’s numbers. Especially by the lead actor of the movie. So much controversy around the money made or lost. I don’t think about the movie itself anymore just this narrative around it.
Batgirl...Black Adam...Ezra Miler and The Flash....Patty Jenkins and Wonder Woman 3....DC and Warners are just screwing up things left and right. Gunn and co have their work cut out for them.
@@mrsam0496 Gunn is a talented filmmaker. His Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker series are the only things in the current DC universe I actually think are good. But I don't really think of him as a big time producer who can oversee a bunch of other directors projects. They need a Kevin Feige type, but I have no idea if Gunn is even right for the job.
I've never been a fan of the Rock as an actor he's overrated as far as i'm concerned i wonder if he feels like he's lost power with DC now that James Gunn is in charge and his movie has bombed?
Dwayne Johnson seems like a sore loser. He took his shot with Black Adam and missed. He had a great opportunity to build a franchise and now he can't. Not only cause of the the movie's box office but also cause of what I assume will be the new DCU rebooted cinematic universe. This guy just seems so desperate to convince WB and the audience that his film should be a jumping off point for the DC Universe except it isn't. It is a dogshit movie that failed to establish Black Adam and the JSA as characters people care about and want to see more of. I said it in my review for this movie, I hope WB gets rid of this man from DC. I know people think there's something to be gained working with him but there really isn't. All he does is put out the same generic crap over and over again.
Black Adam is a fun watch. Is it the best comicbook movie? No. Is the worst? Nope. It should recoup its money from streaming services, TV licence, DVD and HD sales
Dwayne Johnson is also a producer on the movie so not just "a movie star" on the movie. So I guess that gives him a reason to talk the financials when he probably shouldn't.
I have to laugh about all of this -- Dwayne Johnson is bulletproof, as in, he's already a made man. He'll do more movies and they'll all do really well. Black Adam is just a drop in the bucket.
I think all the rock was saying was the boxoffice isnt the end of how much a movie makes. The public today are way too hung up on the box office numbers
@@rickythedragonsteamboatwil995 The rock said: box office isn’t the end of money making for a film. I SAID: the public are too hung up on box office numbers. Is that clear enough for you?
Is John suddenly taking crazy pills? When he says at 4:00 "you're Dwayne Johnson, none of this is gonna hurt you no matter what", he couldn't be more wrong. The whole reason this poor attempt at spinning the harsh reality is happening is BECAUSE this tarnishes not only The Rock's huge EGO but also (and more importantly) his image as a profitable movie star who can jumpstart a franchise on his own. THAT is why he's trying so hard to change the narrative. It doesn't help that he ended up making a fool out of himself with the whole "hierarchy of power" thing. It's a shame though, because I did enjoy Black Adam and I was looking forward to more in the future, as long as they got a better script for the sequel.
The cash haul doesnt end at the box office. A lot more people will pay to see it VoD, maybe even buy it and eventually TV licensing. At least the streaming path will be mine. I didnt want to see it in a theater.
The rock is a one demential actor. He never tries to play roles that push his acting ability he plays the same bald headed character in every movie he’s in.
WB has a history of doing creatives wrong, then we find out later all the backroom shenanigans. WB fought with the Rock from day one that's why it took so long to make the film, marketing the film should have come out last week in September, one of actors just happened to do something so you don't have a China release. The movie made more than Suicide Squad 2 Rock is right to bring back Henry Cavill. Moving forward you need stars and good content to make great movies DC has them be smart enough not to be a trainwreck.
You donot need stars for superhero movies. The character is already a star, see Superman actors before they did superman or the MCU. Superhero movies are very expensive to produce why have the added cost of a huge name. Black Adam like SHazam was always going to make the same box office with a huge name or not
Black Adam is a villain, that's it. He is an "anti hero" as much as Marvel's Dr.Doom is. He shouldn't have a solo movie with a tragic heroic origin story, and make him into a nice a guy is a damn mistake. He is not a nice guy, he is not a hero. Man, in the modern origin story, which the movie used as reference except for the "bad parts", Adam and his nephew got the powers, then he KILLS THE KID to keep the powers for himself because he (the kid) didn't want to kill anyone. And then, later on the story, it's Adam HIMSELF who releases Sabbac into the Shazam family. Billy Batson, seeing that he is being overpowered by Adam, wins by tricking him into turning back to human form, which causes Adam to turn into dust because in the comics, the human form of the champion ages normally, which is also seen in the Kingdom Come story. Something very basic about the Shazam powers that they got wrong in this movie.
There is a lot of bad press for this movie, it seems very intentional, especially since the audience score is so high. If it is that bad, then we can just stop talking about the movie, but every freaking day its Black Adam disappoints, or bad black adam this or bad black adam that.... this is starting to feel very intentional. NOTHING good at all about this movie in all of these reviews and conversations. Very weird.
Yes, it is intentional because as John & Rob stated, The Rock continues to argue against the fact that Black Adam lost the studio money. If The Rock just moves on, everyone else will as well; if they haven't already. I know I have.

That is not the fault of the critics but instead on the writers, producers, & studio. I believe critics should always be honest with their opinions of a film, but it is just that, their opinion, & you have every right to disagree with them. Sadly, those who loved/liked the movies did not go see enough time to give it the positive press & had the Rock remained silent, the negative press would have disappeared & the next stories/discussion would be about how Black Panther 2 did not make a billion dollars. It wasn’t a masterpiece by any means. It was just fun. If people had fun with the movie than it wont matter to anyone
I’m surprised WB hasn’t told him to stop
They’re probably still debating internally what to do about him.
Well you like an actor who passionate about his craft.

@@MrJohnnyLighting us too.. I feel the one personality os staring to wear thin.. Also Black Adam wasn’t a hugely popular comic
Question-Can You Smell What The Rock Is Cooking ?
Answer-He's Cooking The Books Of Flop Adam ! 😃😄😂😂😂
Now that was funny 🤣
I always say that the best judge of someone’s character is how they handle losing. Dwayne Johnson has shown before he doesn’t particularly handle losing very well. He had shown that before on the Baywatch movie. I think he behaved that way to a lesser extent with Skyscraper.
100%. It’s easy to consistently post videos of “good deeds” on instagram but the guy cannot resist spinning things to fit his narrative.
Who cares if critics trashed Baywatch? Let it go.
You can’t judge a persons whole character based solely off their inability to lose.
@@MysticMayne I didn’t say solely. I said it’s the best judge.
When he put the captain America 1 add on I was done😂😂😂
It was so unnecessary. This was the same guy praising Wakanda to make it seem like there’s no competition and he’s all about love and support. Yet he had to drag a 11 year old movie to make himself feel better about how bad his own movie was, how sad!

The rocks ego is what’s making this movie even worse
We need a documentary for this movie because this is hilarious
Shazam wasn’t my cup of tea but it was a better movie for sure the this but out of all three man of steel to me is still the best one

They’re definitely not opening with a Batman movie. Especially with Matt Reeves writing the sequel

His brand gets affected even worse with him acting like a sore loser about it, though.
He's upset that he'll be missing out on residuals despite the likely hefty payday he received upfront.
Exactly
So what exactly is the Rock cooking.

Now as a straight Thano or Killmonger like villian, he would be great
Dude has that same WWE wrestling energy for almost everyone of his roles.
@@gaeron1305 so? He doesnt like bashing movies knowing hundreds of people have put their all into it.

WB has a history of doing creatives wrong, then we find out later all the backroom shenanigans. You donot need stars for superhero movies. The character is already a star, see Superman actors before they did superman or the MCU.

Looks like The Rock should reconsider FAMILY……. He and Vin should just hug it out and talk so DJ can appear in the finale Fast movies, those movies did more for DJ’s movie career more than any other films! #HobbsReturns
Didn’t watch the movie and not interested in a sequel but it’s interesting how people are fighting about whether is profitable or not
I dont condone lying about the box office returns, but I can see why The Rock is trying to defend the movie, first hes an executive producer of the movie so he had some major input in the movie, second the Rock's ex wife is Henry Cavill's agent, so him returning as Superman would give his company big money if it happens, and he was trying to set up Black Adam as the next big threat in the DCU, but thats not going to happen due to rebooting
No one has confirmed a reboot yet
This is just sad 😭😂
Aaaaaah. He’ll make another good movie and everyone will fall in love with Rock all over again. Such is the beautiful fical nature of Hollywood.
The Rock needs to stick to the buddy movies with Kevin Hart or those stupid Fast and Furious franchises. That's his bread and butter. I'm sure Vin Diesel is having a good time with Johnson's failure with BA.
@@josevalentin890 I think we all just need a Rock break😂😂
I feel like John campea telling Dwayne Johnson to stay out of it in regards to speaking on the financials of a film he also had a hand in producing not just him acting in on the screen means he can talk about it in any capacity also I feel like Dwayne needs to sue Warner brothers for defamation of character because this makes him look bad it makes it seem as if he’s a liar but also it makes it seem as if he is sneaking behind the studios back and releasing documents in regards to the films handling he needs to let the world know that a studio can’t just do this
We all know that when things get sour with a studio what do they do they get messy and start to publicly poop on actors and he should show them they can’t do that especially when it comes to Dwayne the rock Johnson 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
Would have been great....except for the mid-credit scene.....
I don’t understand why Dwayne Johnson would leak fake news 😂 I enjoyed Black Adam though 🤣
Too save his own reputation
because Kahndaq is near Egypt. and Black Adam is in de-Nile.
Dwayne Johnson is trying to avoid being considered box office poison. Which he is becoming.
Wait, the Snyder Cut didn’t make back the $70M cost to complete it? With all the new subs to HBOMax and physical copies included?
Is BA actually undesirable? Or does that label apply to the Rock? Let's see how the XFL impacts his career
That's Baloney.... ehm ... I mean Belloni.
