This is Simple Minds Best album! So many great songs on here. Their first commercial breakthrough album. Promised you A Miracle, New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84), Someone Somewhere In summertime, Big sleep. This album is Perfect!
Although I’d say Hunter and the Hunted is my personal Favourite.

This was my first Simple Minds album. I purchased when it came out. It was also my first color vinyl. It was gold with flecks of the other cover colors.
I saw them play at a mid size venue in Dallas called the Bronco bowl. I’m not sure how they ended up there because it had to be around the time they were hitting big with the single from the Breakfast Club soundtrack. They were on the heals of becoming the next thing.

New Gold Dream as an album is a masterpiece. Its complete in every sense . The atmosphere, the colours ,the groove ,the melodies, the mystery & the ambience are all present in Hunter & the Hunted . NGD still has echoes of the original band that featured Brian McGee . Every track is killer & its an album that still pleases my soul 40 + years on .
Simple Minds had a well earned rest in between the next album Sparkle in the Rain . By comparison IMO I,always felt that SITR came up short ... The 3 singles Waterfront, Speed your love to me & Catwalk are brilliant tracks . The other tracks sound like demos compared to the big hitter singles ....Thats why NGD will always outshine SITR for me

"Hunter and the Hunted" is a good, relaxed, atmospheric piece which swings nicely with, icing on the cake, a beautiful solo from Herbie Hancock not relying on the ego but in the service of the song. This is one of my favorite pieces from the album New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84), which for me is their last great album, before sinking into more standardized music.
Justin, I would like you to look at their earlier albums which are more interesting from my point of view. The double album Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call (released in 1981) produced by Steve Hillage is their must in my opinion but Empires and Dance (1980) and Real to Real Cacophony (1979) are not far behind and their debut album Life in a Day (1978-1979) is worth a listen just to hear the primary influences of Simple Minds in their early days (Magazine, Roxy Music...).

You seem to enjoy 80’s pop. You may want to revisit Aha. I got you off on the wrong foot and I’m sure there’s another request that will set you straight. Lead singer, Morten Harket, is one of my faves. His two and half octave range on Take On Me (which I know you’ve heard) is the widest I can recall on a recording. He also sings the longest sustained pitch on a recording that I know of.

This brings us nicely to dubious bands in charity shops. I have many later CDs by SM purchased for 50p (hi PT) and i can honestly state I have no reason why because they're the most frustrating of bands. I may go as far to say that I actually dislike them. In fact Justin , I'm learning from your channel that my musical taste is far more limited than I thought:
    Bowie Gimme a break
No, I won't continue this poetic tirade.... This ? I'm singing Someone In Summertime over it and it's seamless. Ah well. Randy sings all the same songs too and we love him.
    Plod plod plod. PC Plod.
Thanks to yer channel I can make it thru songs like these..and that helps me cough.... consolidate my opinions.Guess what? My bike gears broke. I walked home. `I CALLED IN THE CHARIDEE SHOP. All sweaty n hot. I bought a £4 A1 hardback photo book of The Wonders of the World and a £10 crouching stool (embroided) for 14 pounds sterling. The also gave me 4 cds FOR FREE. I've just given the dvd /cd Dave Gilmour On An Island disks to the shopping delivery guy who said he heard PF DSOTM on headphones as a kid and it made his head spin. I told him DG was watered down PF and apart from his first two solo LPs , I had little patience with his soloing post Final Cut.
The Final Cut, JP/. I was obsessed with that. It's still got Presence in 2023.
Anyway, Clive said the chicken was close to it's sell by date so we could have it For Free! Vangelis Best of CD Pulstar says hi too- (I first hear that when i was 10 and thought Donna Summer was gonna start singin at any moment!)
As does Brandon Flowers and a Various Artists CD covering the songs of the Jam.( Details on request.)
    You couldn't make it up.
I also unload the dishwasher and reload it with supper trails B4 listening to ur daily reactions, so ur a great help to structure my post work tendencies.
    And for that i say
    Ffanx.

If you dig this song you'll find you like the whole album, as this is a good cut but I don't think the best one. The tone and quality is consistent throught the whole album - reminds me of the laid-back moody vibe of some albums of the time like Roxy Music's Avalon. This was a big one for me in high school, but I was the only one in my school who knew who they were. But soon, the Breakfast Club would come out and Don't You Forget About Me would change that.

Take it for what it is/ what it sets out to achieve, and it's still a great song. They went looking for peace. They found it. It's been a long time since I last listened to this album. Too long.
If you want some more of that piece combined with Celtic folk music from Brittany, listen to *Belfast Child* - their live collaboration with Breton musician, Allan Stivell (responsible for a revival in interest in the Celtic Harp, once). It's a great fusion of different Dreamtimes. I think you might like the tone of this particular kind of harp, too. ruclips.net/video/HOximtbiFmw/видео.html

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 11 месяцев назад

If, after that, you think you might fancy some music just by *Alan Stivell* one of the places to start is with *Tri Martolod* (lyrics in Breton, I think - but it's possible they're in something like Erse, too. He sings in various languages - even French, at times.) ruclips.net/video/wMQbcGNs9kg/видео.html
Some of his music is real ethereal, misty, dreamy, Beyond-the-9th-Wave, Tuatha de Danaan stuff (the tall fairy folk who live in the ancient mounds, and pop up to do some magic sometimes).
Tri Martolod makes a few more compromises with rock than other songs of his, hence the idea that it might be a good meeting place between worlds, at which to enter the one he either found or made up, depending on who you ask.

Their last album to receive more than a 6/10 from me though, as others point out, this was the start of their most commercial period (are the two things connected, I wonder. Hmmm....) This track is actually pretty dull. Better check out their previous Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call (a double album packaged as two separate single albums though cellophaned together, weirdly) which was produced by Steve Hillage. That's at least an 8/10.
