I had the Simple Minds Live in the City Of Light double CD playing to see in the new year. The sound quality and the song versions in that recording are just incredible. I tried to find a few requests that carry the same sort of feel. For those who remember these songs, hope you enjoyed them as much as I did. :)

Simple Minds with no doubt at all are one of the all time greatest acts, purely because of the massive variety in their catalogue and pure musical prowess and originality...As a live act they cannot be bettered by anyone. Absolute legends. Absolute genuine stars, beyond the 80's, way beyond to this day. Their music will be played in a hundred years. Classic.

Yes, they changed the structure of the song because they were going into new territory playing in sold out stadiums and needed a few slower anthem's into the show so they did this version. You can also see the change of tactic to slower songs in street fighting years album.

Simple Minds developed an almost unique talent later in their career whereby live versions of songs would be changed and slowed down, but some how manage to sound more epic!

@@dctbass Read my comment above, I got my information from an old Jim Kerr interview I remembered.

@@glenndouglas8822 I had read it. The unusual thing was slowing songs down live, to make them work better; normally instinct and adrenaline result in songs being played faster to make them more exciting in a gig. Takes courage and discipline to go the other way, but it worked. They also did a similar trick with New Gold Dream too.

Thoroughly enjoying the reactions to Simple Minds and glad you guys seem to be enjoying the journey! It's all subjective, of course, but for me, this is the greatest song in the Simple Minds canon, and comes off their greatest album, Sparkle In The Rain. Ironically, this live version sounds completely different to the album cut, which I also love - but they way they re-arranged it for the live performance took it to another level. Please consider doing a reaction to their other deep cut White Hot Day, also from the Sparkle In The Rain album. Or their instrumental track Somebody Up There Likes You, from the preceding album. New Gold Dream. Thank you.

they are going through a rebirth and re hashing things now last fe wyears but still going strong.. I think they should re do some of the older Albums or reinterpret them - as theyve done things with the 'accoustic' and New Gold dream

Early 80's groups could change from an album version to a live version and it not sound remotely similar!! This version sounds nothing like the album version, for me this is far better!!

I saw them in 1989 and JK made a ref to what it was about during the gig. They also had a graphic projected, same as Alive and Kicking which is a pro life song.

The original version is among the top 3 excellent songs of Sparkle in the rain, the last worthy of the fundamental and extraordinary group that they were, of the unrepeatable cycle of Sons and Fascination and New Gold Dream... then the slow decline started up to Street figheten years and the light of the city of life..., but it was still them.. After that it's completely another thing, distant cousins without Forbes, McNeil.. 😁

I watched this live broadcast on ch4 live that night in 85.. I think kerrs voice was especially good that night and for that tour.. They did a live Album from paris in 86 but I believe they should've just released this concert instead as the Live in the city album was over produced and to dubbed. This version of Book of brilliant things was one of the highlights of the night.
