    As a High -School Senior in 1980, the period of Breakfast Club resonates strongly as I remember my own youth, and thus will always be a sentimental favourite of mine.

    The song lyrics to me reflected the theme of the movie itself. This group of kids, from a bunch of different cliques, the jocks, the preps, the nerds, the rebels, the outcasts, came together throughout the movie but there was one pivotal scene where Brian(the nerd) asks what will happen on Monday, when they are back in their respective cliques, will they remain friends or ignore each other like they did prior to this Saturday, when they came together and shared their feelings, their worries, their fears. He is told that they will probably go back to ignoring each other, which he says is BS. The song is an anthem to that feeling of "are you going to forget about me and ignore me as you 'walk on by' or will you 'say my name"?
    Of course, some of the stuff in this movie did not age well but it was pretty accurate, in a general way, for how life was in high school back then and I bet there are still cliques these days, although maybe not as insular as it was back then. I was sort of a chameleon in high school. Did not really belong to any set clique but got along with people in all the different cliques(I was a preppy jock that was in the National Honor Society, so a bit of a Jack of all trades). I was also the guy that people went to if they wanted something they were embarrassed to buy for themselves(not drugs, things like Playboy magazines, condoms, some girls even had me buy them pads or tampons). I did not do it strictly out of benevolence, I charged a fee to buy those things from the nearby convenience store, during break or lunch, and bring them back for them.

    The video didn't capture the coming of age story that was the Breakfast Club. For it's time, the Breakfast Club was about the differing clicks in high school and how the kids treated and perceived each other ..it did hit home on the issues of social class and the expectations that came with being labeled. It didn't go as deep as could have but for a 16 year old watching it, it went deep enuff. The song to me is beautiful and kinda haunting...

    Another great song/reaction. For me the music is more important than the video but I think I'm 5-10 years older than you guys as I was a teen in the 80s and can remember the 70s where there were no real "videos" and can remember when Bohemian Rhapsody and Wuthering Heights came out and they were the first "proper" videos I recall seeing. I love Simple MInds and saw them in concert about 15 or so years ago and they were still good. One of my favorite Simple MInds songs is "Love Song" but if you disliked this video you'd hate that one, lol. Alive and Kicking is another fave from them. As for 80s songtracks - a lot of movies then featured music from the 60s and 70s and not just new songs from the 80s but some I recall would be from Pretty in Pink including from OMD - If you Leave, Beverley Hills Cop with The Heat is on, Axel F & New Attitude. Top Gun had Berlin with Take my Breath away and from Dirty Dancing - (I've had) The Time of my Life. Footloose had plenty of music besides the title track as did Flashdance.

    • @dcanmore
      @dcanmore 6 месяцев назад +1

      the actual story goes, John Hughes was a big fan of Simple Minds and wanted them record it initially but they refused. Then tried to get Bryan Ferry but he turned them down, went back to Simple Minds and they refused a second time. Billy Idol was in the studio and they got him to put down a demo but Billy wasn't keen on the song, so they sent the demo to Simple Minds and then they agreed to do it after Jim Kerr's wife (Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders) heard the demo and persuaded the band to record it.

    This was a double winner because I loved Simple Minds and I also loved The Breakfast Club. The latter didn't really age well, but Simple Minds' best songs still sound as good as the day they were released. PS. I appreciate that Fenom loves Tears for Fears, but elevating that much over Simple Minds? I think you just haven't heard songs like "Alive & Kicking" and "Sanctify Yourself" from Simple Minds' album Once Upon a Time. I also can't believe anyone hates the video. It's just a performance video and the cuts to the all the instruments are right on beat, and the drummer absolutely kills it on this song. Ironically Simple Minds initially complained about the production of the song because the record label made them use Billy Idol's producer Keith Forsey, and the band thought he made them sound too much like Billy Idol.

    It is a pretty deep movie if you pay attention. It ripped off the judgement of the facades and showed one another how everyone has their issues - regardless of class, social standing, cliques, etc. That is what makes the movie resonate so much woth so many - even today. To me - it still holds and is amazing. However, I do see where kids growing up today may not understand it as much. And ... I really think to truly "get" this song- you HAVE to see the movie!

    John Hughes went to my high school. He was a couple of years older than I (RIP). The movie was basically based on what it was like. The cliques - freaks and sportos, bandies - used separate halls, separate cafeterias, parking lots, bathrooms…we had all-day and Saturday suspension. It was called the LAC - Learning Adjustment Center. I never had to write an essay. We had to sit in silence for 8 hours. One time I was there and the girl behind me was tripping on…Around the early 70’s, there kind of was a divide between the haves and the have nots. That’s a theme in John Hughes movies as well.
    Anyway, it wasn’t filmed at my high school except for the final scene. That was a school in a neighboring town. Fun fact: John Hughes and a guy down the street got yelled at by a certain person’s father for prank calling my - I mean, that person’s mom.

    The group originally didn’t want to do this song, but was convinced to do it. So they probably wasn’t big in to the video. The video probably was shot a little after the song was recorded but not before the movie was released or finished so they were only giving a few scenes to use in the video but not too much to spoil the movie. Even though this is considered their biggest hit “ Alive and Kicking “ and “All the Things She Say” are their better songs. Plus this song only features a part of the group. With the other songs you’ll get to whole group and their whole sound.

Talking about not recognizing me, standing above me (better than me), etc. They're saying don't you forget about me regardless of whether I was popular or not. The marketing machine was not as well oiled as it is now. Bands/musicians had more say (and maybe integrity) about how much they wanted to market a movie vs. their music. I could see how/why Simple Minds would want forgo predominantly featuring the movie vs the band. Breakfast Club clips were brilliantly placed IMO. They were already Big prior - This song just placed firmly into the mainstream. For those of us who grew up watching this video there is NOTHING terrible about it LOL.
