- What's happening, folks! I'm back with another Simple Minds reaction from their 1982 album New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84), and this time we listen to the brilliant "Hunter and the Hunted." Seriously, this is one of my favorite from them so far, so join me for another special sonic voyage from Simple Minds (seems like I say that a lot!). Cheers!
Also I recently set up a Patreon, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation can go here. Cheers! / shnootz

Their greatest ever song…. It’s fucking amazingly beautiful
Matt there are some spectacular 12" remixes out there of this song.
Another beautiful song that just creates a lush, enveloping sonic atmosphere that washes over you.
I've loved this fir 41 years and it never ceases to amaze me. Theres no defining chorus but its dripping on atmosphere and the bass/keyboards are sublime.
Incredible track just gets better and better as the year go on thank you matt
The best track on the best Simple Minds album. This isn’t just music, it’s transcendental to a higher plane
Hunter And The Hunted was originally demoed at Rockfield in January 1982 (first as The Low Song, then under the working title of The Hunter) making it one of the first three songs written for the album to be completed.
"If you strip out the vocal you get this fantastic theme going on - a really, really romantic theme going on. At the time we were struggling, lyrically I was struggling, and musically we felt there was something missing. Herbie Hancock, the jazz legend, was working next door, and he came in - and he was particularly attracted to Derek Forbes' bass playing - and Derek to this day is very, very proud of that, as so he should be - Herbie encouraged us not to give up on it. So much so that he went in himself - it was only ten minutes - and sort of doodled on it. And with more luck and enthusiasm he was there. And to this day, a lot of people mention it as being a 'dark horse' track on New Gold Dream and it's certainly one of them." - Jim, Sunday Herald interview, 2008.
Allways loved this one so cool matt
Yes, a fantastic track I've still been listening to months later. Also there's another Simple Minds reaction coming this morning! Cheers.
An amazing album. Not one bad track on it.
It’s on the list of top ten that go to the deserted island with me…
absolut epic work matt.....wonderful song....
I Travel is a great wee tune 🎶
The song is so.amazing. when you hear it back , try and focus on the drumming changes that effect the bass pattern changes and then the tonal changes u talked about. Just simply and amazing melodic song
Jim kerr just floatimg over it
Imho this is the best track of the album and even of their career. Like you said amazing. Just amazing. Incredible.
If you react to their next album, "sparkle in the rain", the sound is different and more rock with the amazing sound of Charlie burchill's guitar.
Kitten has some good taste! ;)
Mmmmmagic....i just want to crack an opening into this universe and meld into it. They dont really revisit this kind of lushness til Big Music...but a pathway of great songs along the way.
Great song you must listen the remastered version of this song, is amazing!
One of the best tracks on the album which is saying something given the quality of this album. The guitar solo is by Herbie Hancock btw
Oh damn, I have an album by him lying around somewhere!
@@mattsnider2667 Yeah, right! Just because you saw the video for Rockit on VH1 doesn't make you an expert!
@@handsolo1209 I'm going to react to the album in the next few days just to defend myself here. :)
@@mattsnider2667 I really hope it's a Clay Aiken record with the wrong label on it.
@@mattsnider2667The keyboard/ synth solo in the song is Herbie Hancock who was so impressed when he passed the studio when they were recording...Simple Minds asked him to guest on this song and he did this solo off the cuff in ten minutes.
Like a beautiful dream, rhythmic and sensual. I think it's about giving in to temptation, desire and sex - the hunter and the hunted. "When you hear me screaming I'll be looking through the eyes of love" Amazing.
Meet me up in Badlands ../
I also love this album. I never listened to David Sylvian / Japan but I'll have to give them a try. But listening to this track now, I'm thinking Roxy Music's Avalon probably influenced some of this album.
Cheers, I'm just in the early stages of exploring Roxy Music, though friends of the channel have told me they influenced Japan fairly heavily. Also this is good timing, as I have another Roxy Music reaction coming later this morning (from For Your Pleasure, which I just started going through).
Zero formulaic work here. Brilliant creativity and uniqueness in melody, instrumentation and voice. Oh and they have a black drummer in an otherwise all white guy band which I always thought was cool.
Haha, you might have liked the vintage lineup of the Dead Kennedys, then (D. H. Peligro was their longtime drummer, recently passed away).
But you're right, this song (and all of the early Simple Minds stuff, so it seems) is just crazy expansive and original. Art-synth-rock-pop.
Any plans for a deep dive into The Cure?
Hey, Jesper. I would love to do that, as it's a group I know almost entirely by reputation (outside of a handful of songs, which I assume are their hits). But currently, I don't have access to any of their material.
@@mattsnider2667 Matt I have all of their albums available, so if you want, just give me a shout.
