Maker's Mark 101. Is it that much better than Maker's Original Bourbon?

- Episode 590. I enjoy Maker's, but not an absolute favourite. That has made it hard to pick up their better, but significantly more expensive releases. A great sale later, I have a bottle of the Higher Proof 101. Is it much better? Let's dig in. #makersmark #bourbon #whiskyneighbour

The Makers Mark Cast Strength is terrific.
I can imagine as the 101 is much better than the original. Cheers!
It sounds like I agree with you about Maker's Mark. On the oakiness, I looked up the char level for Maker's Mark barrels while watching this video, and it's a medium char rather than the heavy char of something like Wild Turkey. Maybe that accounts for the greater oakiness (less charcoal filtration inside the barrel as the whiskey expands and contracts into and out of the barrel during aging).
That could be, great insight!
So many to try! 46, 46 Cask, Cask strength and then the other specialty versions. Great distillery to visit too! My favorite so far was the BRT-02 that I bought on-site!
Being on site would be fantastic. Very cool you have been there and went home with a little whiskey!
Just snagged a 750ml bottle for $38 USD. They went back to the paper label. I am excited to try it tonight.
Amazing price. Enjoy!
Great review of Maker's Mark Jon. I have not been drawn to any bottles of Maker's Mark, maybe because the likes of Wild Turkey, Woodford, Four Roses. Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig and a couple of bottles of Weller opened that have been keeping me busy in addition to scotches. That's been kinda my bourbon world over the years. There will be time in future when I will have to check out some Maker's Mark. Some Clyde May's have showed up in Ontario lately but I don't want to grab a bottle unless I know a little about it first.
I have not had Clyde May, so I cannot share any insight. This 101 is so much better for me than the regular and the 46. Still, MM is not my go to. Cheers!
I like the Maker's Mark profile as a non bourbon drinker but yeah as you get further away from the original one the taste just gets better and better. Cheers Jon!
Cheers! The 101 is really excellent for me. Thanks for dropping in.
Regular MM is good for a mixer for Old Fashioned. Here in USA the 101 has a new label on bottle I prefer the one you have. 101 is so good and way better. Juat got a MM Cask Stength at 110 proof wow I really like it. 101 and Cask Stength are so good. The 46 is good but a mood pour🥃🟥
Ah, maybe a mood pour. I had a few people here really recommend 46. Good, but not my favourite. The 101 so far is really good. Much better for me than the original. Thanks for sharing!
The 101 is my favorite expression of theirs. The 101 was only available at international airport stores. When covid hit no one was flying so they released (destributed) it like their other expressions. I think they should discontinue their lower proof and stick with this.
It really is good! I was surprised as I don't often for for their regular, but this is much richer!
Nice review. Now I’ve got to try the 101.
I hope you enjoy it!
I keep trying to give Maker's Mark a fair chance, but I've tasted 7 or 8 different expressions (including the entry level, the 101, the Cask Strength and some Private Selections) so far and haven't found one I liked enough to want to buy a bottle (even at a bargain price)... However, I do like other wheated bourbons (chiefly Weller, Van Winkle and Wilderness Trail), so it isn't the mashbill (or, apparently, the yeast, if the Pappy story is true).
This 101 hit much better than some store picks, the 46, and the regular. I see you have tried it, but for me, it really stood out. Thanks for sharing your experience. Cheers!
I do enjoy the 46 quite a bit when on sale. French oak staves for 6 months to a year? Definitely makes a difference anyways. How is the knob creek rye? It’s on for 48 bucks in Ontario and just curious if it is worth the money? Thanks!
Glad you enjoy the 46. Knob Creek Rye is sweet for me. Thankful still some spice. An easy sipper for a rye.
@@WhiskyNeighbour good to know thanks! Single barrel sounds like the better choice then. Cheers to the weekend!
I have 25 bottles on my shelf and have gone through about 6 bottles in last year and somehow have never bought makers mark and not sure why
Well, if oak forward, but less pepper spice sounds interesting, I would give them a go. Especially this 101. Very good!
❤️👍
Glad you enjoyed!
I only drink the Cask strength. I don't like the regular at all. Water doesn't do it any good at all.
The regular is not rich or full flavoured. I do enjoy this 101 though. Cheers!
Not so much family any more since they sold to Beam Suntory. They are now owned by the Japanese.
Well .... OK, I guess they sold for distribution and cash, but their history is solid family!
I tried some makersMark took a taste. I thought I was gonna die was so gross I threw the rest out.
Seems like an extreme reaction do you maybe just not like whiskey in general?
I agree, that seems extreme for a well established release. I have had strong reactions to small batches, but this release, or at least the regular, is blended with hundreds of barrels and released for general appeal. What Bourbon do you enjoy?
@@Urothewarrior I love scotch and single malt but that makers mark was just horrible
@@WhiskyNeighbour next time I have a chance I will try it again. Maybe it was the day I tried it. And it was only a 50 mil sample not a large bottle that I threw out.
@@Urothewarrior it was only a 50 mil sample not a big bottle that would be extreme
