- Sew a Volunteer Pack from something you have in your fabric stash quickly to gift to a volunteer or key worker.
This is part of my new series of free quick sews to keep you entertained and will hopefully be of use in our current unexpected situation.
I’ve designed this bag as a beginner friendly bag that can be sewn up really quickly and given as a gift to volunteers and key workers across our countries to carry their phone, keys, face mask, hand sanitiser, and other essentials, while they are out and about giving their time selflessly to others. You can make it as a cross-body bag or as a grab bag with a short handle to use as an emergency or first aid pack. Great for men or women.
A quick and easy sew suitable for beginners.
Finished bag approx 9 x 7”
Seam allowance is 1cm (3/8”) unless otherwise stated
Pattern pieces:
3 rectangles of fabric 9.5 x 11.5” for body and pocket
2 x Zip tabs 1.5 x 3”
1 strip 4 x 53” for a cross body strap or 4 x 15” for a grab bag

I'm a simple person. I love hands-free bags. Thank you
Thank you 😊
It's really great to revisit your videos. I got a new puppy and I thought I'd make this bag for our winter walks! Thank you.
I love your instructions! So easy to follow! Especially since you give both inches and centimeters.. We US sewers are metrically challenged😁
Wonderful! Thanks Candace
This has been enormously instructional…..let’s hope mine turns out so neat and crisp. What machine do you use….love the sound of it. Thank you for sharing….no music, no flashy nails, just clear instructions!
I use domestic sewing machines only. I am using a Janome Atelier 7 (or Skyline 7 if you are in the US). There is a review of it on my website blog if you would like more info :)

You're the best, Diane. Thanks. I'll line it so a small zipped interior pocket can be added. I know just who I'll gift this to. Thanks again.
Enjoy xx
I’ve just found you, so pleased I did. Love your tutorials. I really like how you have the measurements in the comments so I can look later. Fabulous bags too! Thank you for making these videos x
Thanks so much 😊
Great video! Such clear instructions! Great camera angle too! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! thank you xx
Thank you for sharing your wonderful personality and teaching ability. What a sweetheart. 🙌🏻
Very clever! The crisis seems to be about over in the U.S. now, so I think I'd like to make this up for myself. I gave up leather when I gave up meat, and this would make up a nice, firm handbag, something I've missed. Thanks for supporting essential workers, and thanks for sharing such a brilliant idea.
Please do! Glad you like it
I need a stash. Lol. I have owned a sewing machine for at least 9 years. This is the most use it has gotten. I've been making masks for those in need. I hope I will be able to make this bag when the world is a bit more normal. Thank you for the wonderful tutorial.
You are very welcome x
What a generous gesture, we will remember who kept us busy and useful in these trying times Thank you.
Thank you
Thank you. You always make it look so easy!! I will try one today as I need one for traveling and I think this will be the perfect size
Hope you like it!
You're quick! 😊. Love the bag! Thanks for the tutorial.
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for making this patterns for us at home.
You explained very well too. All the best to you.

Thank you! 😊
Oh I love this , can't wait to try it! Thank you

You are a great tutor. 👏🏾👏🏾💕🇦🇬
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for another lovely pattern and another one that emphasises caring for others especially right now. I love the style of your patterns, and also your videos which are so warm and encouraging (as well as instructive!). Your generosity is much appreciated.
Thanks so much Tanya - look forward to seeing yours !!
Love the simplicity and functuality of this bag...great tutorial easy to do
Thanks so much 😊
Thank you for the pattern and video tutorial...but most of all for your kind generosity!!!
Best accent ever!
What a wonderful thing to do, love your tutorials
Thanks so much 😊
We truly appreciate what you are doing for all of us....thank you. My friend just made one and it's beautiful!
So glad, thanks Lynette, stay well xx
Glorious!!!
Beautiful design. Great for men and women.
You are so thoughtful!! Thank you very much for putting this together!
Thank you for your videos. I am new to sewing and a visual learner. I appreciate that you don't assume that all your viewers know when/how to do something and are very detailed when you explain the steps, such as which direction to lay the zipper etc. I also appreciate how you record you actually sewing. For me this helps because I can see when I need to back stitch. Thank you for making this video and for sharing your pattern with all of us.
You are so welcome!
oh my I made one with nagihide it was a chore, but did it finally.....wow. Thank you again🤗😀
Glad you managed - what is nagihide? Don't hink I've heard of that
@@SpencerOgg it's like fake leather 🙂
I am so sorry I spelled it wrong....it's naugahyde 😏❤
@@darlenenelson215 I still had to Google it!
Looks like a great pattern. Thanks
You’re welcome 😊
I love the yellow bag!!
I love your channel :) I'm going to make this for my trip to Costa Rica :). you are so fun to lesson to. Thank you for the video so much.
Thank you xx Have fun!
I love this pattern, thank you so much. I've made it tall and I've made it sideways, and love them both. I did find that I prefer them with stronger fabric, such as waxed canvas or vinyl.
Wonderful! Why not take a look at some of my other patterns using sturdier fabrics, fully lined etc www.spencerogg.com/
love the name, thanks
Sew fun! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talents with us!
Love this pattern. Size is perfect. Thank you so much. Sewing is keeping me sane and I appreciate you being a part of that. 💚
Thanks so much. I will make some of these.
Have fun!
I loved this bag. I made it just a little larger and landscape size. I made it with pleather and cotton lined. 2 pockets on front. 3 on back..
Love to see it ! Do join my sewing group and share your pics facebook.com/groups/170115107145604/
What a clever design! Thank you for sharing. So very generous of you.
First time catching one of your tutorials. I am just starting out so this may be a bit more than I can do. I’m learning by quilting and that’s not too easy either. There was a couple reason I continued watching; one was your Gorgeous accent! I absolutely love it!!! Two, I didn’t think it would hurt to listen. I learnt several things. Thank you so much!! I’m subscribing 😁

I really recommend Diane’s patterns, they are so carefully worked out to reduce bulk and are truly domestic machine friendly. Her videos are very clear and she has a number of free projects to get you started. And she always includes a tea break! 😃
Thank you so much. Cute bag.
I love these kind of bags. Thank you for sharing your expertise.🤗
Thank you. Cannot wait to try making one. 👍😊
Hope you enjoy
Great tutorial love the bag and your simple explanation Love your videos xx
Thanks so much 😊
Love your bags
Thank you xx
An exceptional useful purpose bag for our nhs staff and folk in the field at this crucial period in life.
For me, I have learnt so many key sewing techniques and a better understanding of how I need to use a rule and cutting mat. Your tutorial and demonstrations have highlighted the key aspects my Patchwork Tutor has been patiently guiding me. Blessings. 👌💐
So glad you enjoyed it
I love this bag! Perfect size! Thank you Diane! So sleek...
Brlliant design, as always ❣️x

I love the bag. I may have to try even though my sewing skills are sorely lacking.
Thanks Diane. These is a really great little bag.
Very easy tutorial to follow. Thank you sharing. Your voice is very easy to listen too thank you Diane💕💕

as always, perfect directions and wonderful pattern. Thank you again for your generosity.
Thanks for the tutorial...I made one and it actually turned out pretty good! I'm interested in making this same type of design, but a smaller dimension, approx. 5"x7" or so. I need some direction on how to size everything, as I am pathetic when it comes to math. I'm trying to create a little dog walking bag using the grab strap, but would also like d rings on either side, in order to clip on a small hand sanitizer holder, and doggie poop bag holder. Inside will only be for cell phone and maybe keys. LOL this is all very clear in my head, but not sure it it's doable! I need your expertise!! I really enjoy your videos and have learned quite a bit since I am new to sewing. You're a wonderful teacher too.
Everything is doable lol. Just reduce all the measurements by the same percentage. Why don't you join my Facebook Bag sewing group, lots of help there with bag making. facebook.com/groups/spencerogg/
Diane, another great pattern. Fantastic ♥️
I made this bag, turned out good, thanks
Thank you for wonderful simple pattern tutorial
Thank you! Love your patterns and videos!
Wonderful idea take care too
I love the simplicity of this bag, but I'd kill for a lined version so I could use interfaced quilt cotton for the outer fabric! If you ever make a pattern for a lined version of this bag, please let me know, Diane - I'll snap it up!
Thanks Tex, I try to keep the freebie tutorials nice and simple so total beginners can dive in.
Take a look at the Pixie crossbody though, that was the next move on from this and fully lined, with pockets galore:

Thank you for the pattern:-) Stay well and keep sewing
Very interesting sew. Thanks!
Just made one in vinyl, but my machine just wouldn’t stitch the strap but I put rivets in and it looks fine. Thanks for a great free pattern.
Great tip!

What a wonderfully clever pattern, and yet another incredibly generous gesture from you Diane. Many thanks! ❣️
Thank you!
Beautifully explained, yet again a very clear tutorial from you, thank you for this it is just perfect and will be very useful.
Thanks Diane, happy sewing !
Hello Diane! I made this bag yesterday with 10oz waxed canvas, and I'm very pleased with the results. I'm going to make another with a lining today. I do have a question, though. I've searched the previous comments to see if it's already been addressed, but I was unsuccessful.
At first I thought I had done something wrong when I turned the bag and the zip tabs wound up on the inside, but after reviewing the video I realized that is how it is supposed to be. Maybe I'm overlooking something as a non-purse carrying man, but is there a purpose for having the zipper tape and tabs dangling inside when they could have been trimmed earlier? I made my zipper tabs out of 4oz leather in a trapezoid shape and they came out very nice. I was bummed to find them hiding on the inside! 😆
Thank you!
You could definitely shorten them and stitch them with the tabs outside too, not a problem, but they will fall upwards and lay on the strap because of where the strap is attached on this bag. It was just a quick little project to whet your appetite 😀If you want to try a more structured lined bag in the same shape, have a look at the Pixie: www.spencerogg.com/product/the-pixie-crossbody-pdf-sewing-pattern/
Awesome bag Diane! Thank you so much! X
You are very welcome Janet. Look forward to seeing what you make! xx
Thank you, so nice idea!
Thank you for this great tutorial!🇧🇷

Thank you for showing how to sew a volunteer bag. How do you add a lining in the bag?

How about using denim for the bag? Thanks for the video and the free pattern.
It might be a little limp. Use something a little firmer if you have it Denise. - Or you could add interfacing to stiffen it
I loved this video, very easy to follow and anxious to make one…also do you sell those pink snips ( small thread cutter )

Hello, I just watched your tutorial and you are very good teacher. I am new to bag making and appreciate your video. I am wondering if a lining could be made to fit this bag and if so, how would one go about doing so? Thank you very much, looking forward to more videos.

Hermoso diseño felicitaciones💛

I love this bag. I want to try it with a lining. I’ll try it without a lining first 😜
Edit:: Well, I’m a beginner bag maker and AND and I mistakenly put the tab in the Side rather than the zipper area. I’m praying that it will be visible as I box the corners🤦🏾♀️
There is a hack in the facebook group for lining it xx
Omg you are so brilliant at teaching how to sew your bags. Love watching your channel. Can you tell me what make of sewing machine you recommend, I’m due to treat myself to an upgrade and would appreciate your advice. Many thanks for all your positive tutorials 🤗
I have a Janome Atelier 7 (Or Skyline 7 in the US) I do love the Atelier series and they are a range of price points. Just make sure the machine you purchase has a good strong motor for sewing through lots of layers. Try it out first at a dealer if you can (take 6 layers of denim with you and watch their faces :) )
Hi there. Love the volunteer bag. Is there a printable pattern? Thanks
No I just give the sizes in the video and they are written in the text below. Just simple rectangles for this one xx
Muito lindo ! Obrigado !
Would it be the same message for a lined bag of course leaving an opening in the lining just curious thanks wonderful video!
