Great review! When I was on S1 / S1R presentation, there was a demonstration of the durability of that side hinge. They were holding the S1 just by the screen extended to the side with 24-105 and shaking it very violently. That hinge is actually super strong.
I love, love, LOVE! your channel! I actually bought my GX85 after watching your video. Praying you stay in the M43 ecosystem...you are my favorite channel / RUclips personality.
Thank you! Not going anywhere ☺️ there might be a few S1 videos while i play with some of the new features, and some comparisons here and there, but I’m still Team m43Nerd 🤓
Thanks for a light hearted honest review. I also added S1r to my gh5 & g9 kit. Hardest thing for me is to get used to is the front dial has moved from G series. Otherwise, it is an amazing camera.
Turncoat !! Only kidding - so jealous !!! I have the G9 with most of the Leica lenses and feel my needs are covered but . . . . . . . . . Can you hear that ? . . . . . . . Something is calling ‘Take me ! Take me !” . . . . . . . . . Must be an S1 !!! Keep up the reviews - it’s all about the results, just as much as the tool ! Now where did I put my old full frame camera bag ?
Congrats - I am happy for you - a tremendous camera - yes not small but super sturdy and nice layout and super LCD and EVF - yes I agree I love M43 but for some things a FF is needed - but using the GX85 with the 45.2mm 1.7 is fun or the GM1 Look forward to a video from you with the new firmware - some say a real nice update for AFC
The side flip screen thingy is really good when using an L bracket for landscape which is why they probably did it. I realised how ballachey full articulating ones are when using an L bracket or even finding one that doesn't get in the way if the screen.
Nice vid! You were in London and didn't call me!!! hahaha... anyway, enjoyed it. I shoot FF too and cameras and formats are only a medium for us photographers/filmmakers to achieve desired results. So it doesn't matter. But, having said that, even I have expensive FF cameras, I shoot M43 99% of the time these days, especially for videoing in London,
The S1 looks a beast and of course in the mean time until you get faster lenses you can use your film camera lenses to get some shallow depth of field :) I'm currently using a Panasonic G9 alongside a Sony A7R II. I mainly use my older minolta glass with the LA-EA4 adapter on the A7 R II and also my old vintage primes. Have fun with the new camera :)
Always look forward to your videos. I too have both m43 system (OMD EM1 MII) and Nikon Z6. I'm not a professional photographer but am enjoying both systems. They both have their pros and cons and seem to fit the bill for specific tasks.
Regarding the hidden costs, I was pleased to discover that they have full flash compatibility between the two systems. I even discovered the miniature flash from the LX100 works perfectly on the S1. I actually like the screen design (for photography). I certainly wouldn’t describe it as flimsy! The flip-out mechanism on my GH5 is showing stress cracks around the hinge. The 24 - 105 lens is a real gem!
I can't blame you for going for an S1 (even if it does make you a bit of a m4/3 traitor ;-) With all those pixels and FF (and the advantages that gives), I'd have one too if I had the cash to spare - but as a pure amateur with too much gear already (including, I'm sure, several more cameras than my wife realises) I really can't. As for the idea that m4/3 gear takes up less space, it doesn't - it expands to fill the available space just the same as any other camera gear! I'm rediscovering so many lovely vintage lenses from my past that I can start to use all over again (like a mint Tamron SP 90mm macro - which does weigh a ton, mind), it takes me back decades to when I started in the film days. Alan
Making the 1/2 switch toggle night mode was the first thing I did with my S1! I find the flip screen a little clunky too, but I use all of it, especially for verticals. I won't be getting rid of my GH5s or EM1 Mark II anytime soon though, they are solid cameras. I am astounded by certain aspects of the S1, particularly the dynamic range and low light performance, but I still find my EM1 Mark II with a prime provides comparable images unless it's super dark.
I enjoyed your video. I just wondered if you have ever played around with ProRes RAW and a Ninja V with the S1, and if so, what was your experience of shooting in 12 bit? I have been thinking about upgrading to the S1 eventually from my GH5s.
Nice video. I missed whether the video bits were straight out of camera or if you applied a slight grade. Thanks for sharing your impressions of the S 1.
Your gig vids looked great with the FF! Though, as a fellow GX80 user, what could you suggest in order to get decent shots at gigs? Prime lens? ISO settings, focus mode etc? I’m not a pro by any stretch, the definition of amateur probably 😂, but it’d be nice to photos of local bands that my friends play in and the like. Thanks and keep up the great content (as well as your advocacy of M4/3 photography!)

I've seen about five videos of people carrying or shaking the camera by the screen itself...! Also, I'm pretty certain someone mentioned that an XQD reader wasn't necessary, as one can connect the camera to the computer via USB to access the XQD data. (+Don't forget that, if you really need it, the S1R has no extra crop for 4K60, i.e. x1.09 video crop for everything. Presumably, the S1H is better still.)
I wonder how "real" the improved low light performance is - for a fixed depth of field the m43 camera will be operating at 2 stops numerically smaller f-stop and ISO that the ff camera. Is the S1 @ ISO 12800 really better than the GH5 @ ISO 3200?
They have announced the S1H to be released fall of 2019, which is anticipated to be the GH5 FF equivalent, as in for video features. looking forward to seeing that version, so I can spend money on thing I want but not need😊...
Thanks for the review. Looks like an amazing camera and I do love Panasonic's ergononics and interface. But I will wait on a smaller and cheaper body before I decide to switch from MFT.
Just wondering -- did you ever do a more in-depth comparison between the GH5 and S1? I'm looking to switch to one of these systems, and am on the fence as to which direction to go. At this point, rumors about a GH6 and an S5 are floating around. Any thoughts on these?
I think the gh6 will be an instant buy for me, I love my gh5 and have a lot more m43 lenses. I need to get my S1 lens collection up a bit more before I get excited over the new camera bodies... tho I’m really hoping the S1 gets the 10 bit 60p like this new s5!
@@MicroFourNerds The more I learn about m43, the more I like it. I don't usually shoot with super-shallow depth of field, so the differences there don't bother me.
As soon as I saw the S1 announced I thought.. weddings. In the distant past I shot weddings on film, and spent a large percentage of time in dimly lit medieval churches and equally dark reception rooms. You simply can't have enough ISO performance, and full frame give you this. So no brainer. For "normal" people I still think M4/3 offers everything someone could want - unless they are the kind of people who shoot in obscure situations just-so-they-can - plus it has excellent video performance. The reality that you need to lay out £500 on cards and a couple of batteries to run things optimally, shows the S1 isn't a system to enter lightly. Good review tho'!
*Great video. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts about it. Looking forward to comparison videos (Gh5 vs S1).* *It surprised me to hear that GH5 still has the edge for video*
From all of the new camera releases that I've seen over the last 2yrs, Panasonic has perhaps the bet "kit lens" on the market. To me, it seems like it's an above average lens---and not one you'll look to replace or not use often.
I have the same situation here 😅, i have Lumix G9 and bunch of lenses , and i just purchased the S1 with 24-105 f4 two weeks ago and i need bunch of prime , i stumble with my decision to buy the Lumix 50/ f1.4 , or wait until sigma release their lenses which i hope much cheaper but still have a Great result . I planed to get the 50 , 85 , and 24 mm lenses and If i want to do astrophotography , probably i would have to buy the Sigma art lens 20mm / F 1.4 ,.. Damn this gonna cost lots of money 😭.
Micro Four Nerds the sigma lines is really promising for the price and quality glass , but honestly , I might get the 50/ 1.4 Lumix which I already tried @ B&H photo , I tested the sharpness and out of focus is really breathtaking, plus the aperture ring I really like , but the price and weight of the glass 😭.
Hey my friend, I’ve been a long time subscriber and I have a dilemma: What do you think of the 24-105 for indoor weddings? I use flash most of the time but also snap a lot of candid photos. I’d love to hear more of your thoughts about the high ISO performance for photographing people. The concert pics you included were great but TELL ME MORE!! 🤷🏼♂️
Sometimes I prefer the look aesthetically using flash indoors, especially if the building has that awful yellowish lighting. But I can tell you this stock lens will not struggle in the slightest without flash. It’s incredibly good in low light even at f4 😊
Micro Four Nerds thanks so much!!! Is there a place I can see any of your wedding pics with the s1 and 24-105?? Hope I’m not asking for too much. You’re so generous producing these AMAZING videos. 👍🏼
Timothy Gordon thanks! Right now the camera is so new that new I haven’t delivered the galleries to the couples yet, but I will certainly be sharing my findings on here and Instagram in the very near future 😊
Micro Four Nerds today I picked up the S1 with the 24-105. I’m actually SO impressed. I’d be comfortable shooting up o 16,000 ISO for stills. Wish I had a faster lens but I’ll be patient with sigma and trust what I need is coming for indoor receptions which mostly come in the fall (another three or four months to go). Thanks for your video and feedback in the comments here. It’s been invaluable.
It came with a canon EF adapter which is handy, I found a 50mm prime in a charity shop for £40! I’m hoping to adapt the FD glass to it at some point for sure
I miss the dynamic range capabilities on my FF camera the most, now that I've switched to M43. What made you choose the S1 over other FF cameras in the market?
I love how you don't adapt your lingo for a global audience e.g. "Waz up!" "Bugger up", love it :) As for the FF Lumix, maybe you can change the channel name to Lumix for nerds :D As you say, tools for the job, I have 5D classic in the wings of my GH3 :)
Looks like a great little camera, but £200 for memory card ouch! I'm sure they will get cheaper as adoption grows. Can I ask how you get into gig photography? is a gig where you're asked to do it, or do you approach them? I'd love to have a go at it. Great review by the way.
Ooh I’ve gotten there through many ways to be honest! 1. Being lucky - I knew the daughter of the head sound engineer and they got me a press pass 2. Blagging it. Emailing the promoters and saying you want to take photos for your blog, vlog, anything with exposure 3. To get portfolio, get to the front and smuggle in camera (yay for m43!) 4. Show off your portfolio and then get jobs legitimately haha
i think your xqd card is 120gb, not 128gb. i believe the sony xqd card is about the only one commonly available. i sympathize and agree with nearly every one of your observations about coming from from the m43 system--hundreds of dollars in 'hidden' costs. i also agree that the kit lens is superb. /guy
Use the S1 with flashes for group shots you can at 1/320 sec no HSS needed you can shot with regular flashes at f 8 1/320 sec get beautiful blue sky background try that you will get beautiful group shot make sure they are backlight. This one of the greatest features if you do weddings With camera you ca use real full power of strobe to sync.
Yes! I believe that 1/320 is the fastest of any full frame camera as well? Or full frame mirror less at least? It’s super handy I can hardly push 1/160th at the moment with other cameras
Micro Four Nerds yes my Canon is 1/180 sec You double that with S1 As you know HSS is not good for full power and large or small group. But if you use it with flash make sure that your flash T1 is above 1/900 sec.
I’m super excited I’m eyeing up the sigma 50mm, I have seen some reports of the focus being less fast with them... but I shall keep my eyes on it for sure
Doesn't matter what tool you use so long as its the one best suited to the job!!! I'll stop using tri x when Sony can emulate it! And currently Sony had failed to emulate it in the S1 or the nikon d850!
Interesting, but should go on your new channel, Panasonic Full Frame Nerds. There are about a million people doing videos on this camera and the Sony equivalent already. The interest of your channel to me is using the smaller micro 4/3 system with it’s huge portability and cost advantages to obtain professional results. Everything you say regarding the advantages of the larger sensor are even more so if you drop £20,000 on a Phase One with a decent back. Why not just do that?
I totally get what you mean, and there are tons of m43 vids coming up. That’ll remain the focus of this channel. I will do a few S1 videos just because I’m genuinely interested in the results myself.
I can have a good guess before you do it. The full frame will have inherent noise performance about two stops better at any given ISO due to 4x larger total sensor site area and the dynamic range to go with that (bear in mind it’s newer sensor though, so you’d expect a little further improvement on that). The lenses will give shallower DOF (2 stops worth) at an equivalent x2 focal length and same aperture. They’ll also have superior absolute resolution and reduced issues with CA and other optical imperfections in pretty much all circumstances. It’s just science. Whatever equivalent kit list you pick to take for a job will be vastly bigger, heavier and more expensive in FF format. If you’re looking for a similar shooting aesthetic in a similar situation to m4/3 then choose equivalent focal length (x2) stop down two stops, (say f4.0 to f8.0) increase ISO two stops if you need it for shutter speed. My bet is, you’ll still always get substantially superior results with the FF due to the larger sensor real estate and consequent proportionate shrinking of visual optical aberrations etc.. I predict that going forward, if you are on a job predominantly shooting video in normal circumstances you’ll stick with m4/3. The handling and reduced weight will outweigh the low light performance. Video still looks pretty good at higher ISO anyway and superb on m4/3 up to 4k. The very shallow DOF you can achieve with FF and fast primes won’t be all that useful for real life video due to focusing issues. I predict that pretty much any time you’re shooting stills and can bear to carry the weight (any professional job) you’ll want the FF. side by side comparison will always leave the m4/3 results coming up short when you zoom in and study the pixels. The same would be true if you had access to medium format compared to FF though, for anything other than sports work. I dare you to rent a Phase One with a 100MP or better back for a month though. That’ll make the Panasonic FF look shabby as hell and you’ll end up re-mortgaging your house to have one! On second thoughts don’t. That would be a bad idea! 😂😂🤣
Nice review. Personally, I see little reason to choose the Panasonic S1 over the Nikon Z6. There are cheaper lenses with the Nikon adapter, it's smaller, lighter and much cheaper. The only reason I see to buy this camera is if you are a Panasonic fanboy/fangirl.
Or you prefer your cameras to be better than Nikon. Which isn't hard at the minute lets be honest 🤣 Seriously though strokes for folks. Good look with those slow shutter speeds and having to use a gimbal everywhere with that Nikon ;)
Please keep to MF3 , this is one of just a few sites I know which caters for this format. Full frame has been around for a long time and you haven't delved in to any other full frame make. Yes, I know you like Panasonic so just start another site for your full frame experiences and leave this one alone.
This is a photography/videography channel first and foremost. I’ll continue to use my m43 stuff alongside this. This channel is just me sharing my experiences regardless of what I’m using
@@MicroFourNerds Not so long ago you ditched Zhiyun Plus (sized) crane for Zhiyun li'l Wee crane. Ummm..... Emily... 😀... I think we'd love to see your review on DJI Ronin-S with the mighty Lumix S1 triumphantly perched on it. 😁
Sellout! Turncoat! Terrible, .....only joking 😊 truth is I'm totally jelous as whatever you use you turn out beautiful pictures, I wish I could reach half your standard, I'm sure it's a great camera, but as with canon, and to a lesser extent, Nikon, the price of the dedicated lenses seems to be insane, which puts me off a bit, it seems that unless your a full time pro tog, the prices if the lenses, and when you consider a simple set up of say 3 lenses, almost seem exclusive. I'm in an awkward position, as if I was given one of them, I'd probably be shouting from the rooftops, but for the forseeable I'm setting my sights on the (rumoured) Olympus announcement.
I half agree. I miss the flippy screen so much, but the way it’s implemented on the S1H makes the camera body even bigger and I don’t want that either haha. Basically I think I want a gh5 with a full frame sensor which is impossible but a girl can dream 😄
I’m not asking anyone to switch... I’m not changing my channel’s focus... I’m just reviewing a new camera I’ve bought. Plenty of m43 stuff in the pipeline 😊
So you now find it time to extoll the virtues of FF because Panasonic sent you one? There is nothing here that Sony and Nikon haven't had for quite some time. Unsubscribe.
Bit of a long one so feel free to skip about to the bits you’re interested in 😊

Looking forward to comparison videos (Gh5 vs S1).*
*It surprised me to hear that GH5 still has the edge for video*
I imagine that may change when I get the v log for the S1 I hear the dynamic range is amazing!
Have you plans to review the Lumix G9?
Not at the moment, all the cameras I review are my own and I don’t have any plan currently to get the g9 but I think it’s a great camera !
Indeed, certainly after the upgrade in november 2019. It got many features of the GH5 (many not all).
So in 4k it crops AFTER you hit record?
Yep!
4K 60p. Not 4K 24p
From all of the new camera releases that I've seen over the last 2yrs, Panasonic has perhaps the bet "kit lens" on the market. To me, it seems like it's an above average lens---and not one you'll look to replace or not use often.
Nice review. There is a justification two run 2 systems. Having tested the S1 ...it's damn heavy! 😀
Yes I’m also holding out for the sigma stuff 😅
Micro Four Nerds the sigma lines is really promising for the price and quality glass , but honestly , I might get the 50/ 1.4 Lumix which I already tried @ B&H photo , I tested the sharpness and out of focus is really breathtaking, plus the aperture ring I really like , but the price and weight of the glass 😭.
Hey my friend, I’ve been a long time subscriber and I have a dilemma:
What do you think of the 24-105 for indoor weddings?
Is an adapter available to mount your Canon glass on the S1? That would be a cheap way to get some fast FF primes for the camera.
It came with a canon EF adapter which is handy, I found a 50mm prime in a charity shop for £40! I’m hoping to adapt the FD glass to it at some point for sure
Forgot to say, yaah! you're getting more into astro :)
I miss the dynamic range capabilities on my FF camera the most, now that I've switched to M43. What made you choose the S1 over other FF cameras in the market?
I’m just so used to the Lumix layout and I love their menus etc so it seemed like a natural fit
I'll just repeat my question from earlier: So... what to rebrand this channel to the minute the Pan S1(r) and lenses enters your studio? ;)
Emily Lowrey I enjoy your review also. Team Panasonic! Love my Panasonic Tools. Great Job! I'm looking to getting a S1 to my camera set soon also.
I want both of the systems I wish I could afford them.
thanks for sharing!
I love how you don't adapt your lingo for a global audience e.g. "Waz up!" "Bugger up", love it :) As for the FF Lumix, maybe you can change the channel name to Lumix for nerds :D
As you say, tools for the job, I have 5D classic in the wings of my GH3 :)
When the time comes, what are you going to rename your channel? (Just kidding. I have to confess, I'm now shooting a Z7 along with my EM1ii. )
Can you try taking a long exposeer pictures
Looks like a great little camera, but £200 for memory card ouch! I'm sure they will get cheaper as adoption grows. Can I ask how you get into gig photography? is a gig where you're asked to do it, or do you approach them? I'd love to have a go at it. Great review by the way.
Ooh I’ve gotten there through many ways to be honest!
1. Being lucky - I knew the daughter of the head sound engineer and they got me a press pass
2. Blagging it. Emailing the promoters and saying you want to take photos for your blog, vlog, anything with exposure
3. To get portfolio, get to the front and smuggle in camera (yay for m43!)
4. Show off your portfolio and then get jobs legitimately haha
Micro Four Nerds Thanks for that. I’ll give some of them a try. 😁
Is there any good reason buying an S1 over an Sony A7III today if you are looking at buying a small format camera?
i think your xqd card is 120gb, not 128gb. i believe the sony xqd card is about the only one commonly available. i sympathize and agree with nearly every one of your observations about coming from from the m43 system--hundreds of dollars in 'hidden' costs. i also agree that the kit lens is superb. /guy
is it much heavier than the GH5?
A lot heavier. Like a lot.
@@MicroFourNerds think I'll stick with my G9 then lol.
@Mister Man I love the G9 dude, considering it geared more towards photography it actually a brilliant video camera too I find :)
Now you can really utilize those vintage lenses
Use the S1 with flashes for group shots you can at 1/320 sec no HSS needed you can shot with regular flashes at f 8 1/320 sec get beautiful blue sky background try that you will get beautiful group shot make sure they are backlight. This one of the greatest features if you do weddings
With camera you ca use real full power of strobe to sync.
Yes! I believe that 1/320 is the fastest of any full frame camera as well? Or full frame mirror less at least? It’s super handy I can hardly push 1/160th at the moment with other cameras
Micro Four Nerds yes my Canon is 1/180 sec You double that with S1
As you know HSS is not good for full power and large or small group.
But if you use it with flash make sure that your flash T1 is above 1/900 sec.
Full frame nerds!
pls show me 2 similar photos to see the difference between mft & ff (during daylight). otherwise i can't belief the ff ist better on a screen....
In good light I doubt there be any difference at all tbh!
in good light a flagship smartphone is enough.
stay tuned for the Sigma lenses coming out. It will become a cheaper and better system!
I’m super excited I’m eyeing up the sigma 50mm, I have seen some reports of the focus being less fast with them... but I shall keep my eyes on it for sure
You didn't tell anything about the weight, but otherwise congrats for the new camera :)
panasonic4nerds 👍
"New Camera Bag" 😂😂😂👍
dwallswheart I totally need a new bag! Hahaha any excuse eh 😃
Which isn't hard at the minute lets be honest 🤣
Seriously though strokes for folks.
This channel is just me sharing my experiences regardless of what I’m using
@@MicroFourNerds Not what the name says, but, of course you can use it as you wish. Me, I'll just unsubscribe and go my own way.
Ok 😊
Sony 7R3 is $130 for a extra battery and the lens are so expensive you need a bankroll to buy them.
Your mind will change again the moment you feel some stiffness in your lower back... 😀
Quite possibly 😂
@@MicroFourNerds Not so long ago you ditched Zhiyun Plus (sized) crane for Zhiyun li'l Wee crane. Ummm..... Emily... 😀... I think we'd love to see your review on DJI Ronin-S with the mighty Lumix S1 triumphantly perched on it. 😁
Sellout! Turncoat! Terrible, .....only joking 😊 truth is I'm totally jelous as whatever you use you turn out beautiful pictures, I wish I could reach half your standard,
I'm sure it's a great camera, but as with canon, and to a lesser extent, Nikon, the price of the dedicated lenses seems to be insane, which puts me off a bit, it seems that unless your a full time pro tog, the prices if the lenses, and when you consider a simple set up of say 3 lenses, almost seem exclusive. I'm in an awkward position, as if I was given one of them, I'd probably be shouting from the rooftops, but for the forseeable I'm setting my sights on the (rumoured) Olympus announcement.
So so girls love big things too 😉
This clunky screen is a real disappointment. The S1H screen should be on all the S models.
I half agree. I miss the flippy screen so much, but the way it’s implemented on the S1H makes the camera body even bigger and I don’t want that either haha. Basically I think I want a gh5 with a full frame sensor which is impossible but a girl can dream 😄
The S1 is a typical FF with the advantages and disadvantages every FF has. I'm not switching. I guess I'll be unsubscribing from FF nerds.
I’m not asking anyone to switch... I’m not changing my channel’s focus... I’m just reviewing a new camera I’ve bought. Plenty of m43 stuff in the pipeline 😊
u look quite good why don't you lose some kg - you are doing a disservice to your beauty. thanks for the review.
So you now find it time to extoll the virtues of FF because Panasonic sent you one? There is nothing here that Sony and Nikon haven't had for quite some time. Unsubscribe.
I WISHHHH lumix sent me this my bank balance would be much better off 😂 all views my own
