www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-s1-s1r-review-in-progress/3 hi! does your camera have a small dent as seen in photo #4 in this link? I got 4 S1s from Adorama and every single has this small dent around upper right corner on the wall behind LCD screen. I am on my 3rd replacement unit and it’s very frustrating. I wonder if it is a design flaw and everyone else has it or is it just me being unlucky :)
t Nguyen I was hoping it would because that seems like a pretty small dent and I was hoping I could reassure you that it's nothing to worry about. But mine doesn't have it, so I don't really have a leg to stand on.
I just received my S1 and spent a few hours testing it out at the San Diego Zoo. Overall I'm very happy with my choice but it's not without its downsides. Its size is great in my hands and I have fairly small hands but it is heavy compared to the other mirrorless options, although it doesn't feel any heavier than my Nikon dslr's I'm used to. I do hope either Panasonic or Sigma expands the L mount camera offerings and make a less robust and less expensive body more suited for walking around street photography. Likewise with with their lenses. Sigma lenses are fantastic quality but not exactly small or light weight and from what Panasonic has shown, their lenses aren't going to be either. It would be nice if one of the two companies were to come out with a few lighter weight and more compact lenses even if they are of lesser quality. The autofocus is okay but is definitely its Achilles heal. It's very quick if you have the right mode selected for the subject. I haven't shot any action to test that out but even with still subjects its autofocus can get confused and I found myself constantly switching between autofocus modes trying to find the one that works the best. I wasn't bothered by the supposed DFD pulsing, I didn't notice it at all, but its frequent confusion made me keep switching into pinpoint autofocus to hit the right object to focus on was getting pretty frustrating. I'm used to my Nikon where I can pretty much leave it in 3d autofocus connected to backbutton focusing and have it just work all the time. There was a lot of menu changes that were needed to have it function in ways that to me seemed the obvious choice for what should have been the default setting. The biggest one is the default is to automatically brighten the viewfinder rather than display viewfinder with the exposure that would result from the current settings. This is so odd considering seeing what you'll get for exposure is one of the if not the biggest benefit of a mirrorless camera. It's doubly odd because the default is to not show the exposure meter in the monitor also. So yeah, the default is to NOT show exposure preview and also to not show the meter. That's beyond dumb. Thankfully you can change both those settings. The only other thing I've found I dislike (so far) is the placement of the strap attachment loops. For some reason I always hit them when grabbing the camera and they just get in the way. Of course thats the same with most cameras but it would be great if a manufacturer could figure out a way to make those removable for those like me that don't use them and attach their strap from the bottom thread. A lot of RUclips reviewers have complained about the power switch. I think its perfectly placed. There is no chance of accidentally hitting it instead of the front control wheel and it has enough resistance to prevent accidentally bumping it. It's placement and shape also makes it easy to find by feel and from there to find the button to light up the lcd and rear buttons. I do feel the dials feel a little cheap and plasticky though. They aren't bad, but just don't feel as durable as the body itself. Likewise, the doors that cover the connection ports feels a little weak and you have to really make sure you closed them well to retain their seal. I had been worried the shutter button would be overly sensitive like on Panasonic's G9. I found that so annoying it led me to not buy it. Happily, it does not have that problem and the shutter button has just the right amount of tension. Some standout features I've really enjoyed are the beautiful viewfinder, the fact you can customize the function of pretty much every button is great and the dedicated dial position for time lapse is wonderful. If you switch the dial to time lapse then hit the menu button it knows to automatically take you to time lapse settings in the menu so you don't have to search for it. The power saving feature works great, I got up to a little over six hundred shots and still had about 40% battery and it wakes from sleep so fast it never felt like I had to wait to use it. The menu system is easy to navigate, you can turn on or off the little menu tips and if on, they actually make sense. Overall, the things that really sold me on the camera are all the special functions Panasonic builds into their cameras. The high res mode, the 6k photo mode, the post focus and focus stacking, their excellent time lapse implementation, their excellent manual focus implementation. and of course their superb image stabilization only bested by Olympus. In fact, if Olympus had made a full frame camera that had the features of the Omd EM1 Mark II that would have been my purchase. Panasonic's S1 is the next best thing.

The DFD isn't fast enough for intense sports, but based on my experience shooting with the S1R in Akihabara, its AF is more reliable than the Z6 and Z7.
I've shot both and tried both at recent camera show. Cannot agree there at all. Z6/z7 more reliable in video and in general af. I wouldn't disregard the competition for the s1 at all. Great time to be a consumer.
Note that both Canon and Panasonic share the ability to gather full color data with full sensor AF at the same time. Phase Detect Pixels on other systems mean somewhere from 10%-20% of your color data is interpolated.

So, I left FF DSLR a few years ago, and have been shooting M43 for paid stills and video work, renting a MF Hasselblad if needed. Now I'm considering a FF as a B camera, if the light drops way low, or some director decides they may want a big print or something. Have been spoiled by features on Olympus and Lumix cameras, now it seems I can get those in a FF mirrorless. Having a tough time deciding between 24mp or the R version.

Superb review of the S1 cameras! I think Panasonic did the right thing here. Rather than trying to race in the "small size" market with everyone else, they took a completely different turn putting them in a unique position in the market. DSLR like size for those who like it (and many do with pros and cons). Superb build quality, excellent image quality, lots of real knobs and buttons (like a larger G9) combined with a superb touch interface. What's not to like? Some people complain about contrast detect AF but if my G9 is anything to go from it's really fast and excellent in most situations. If I will add the system it would be the S1, plenty of resolution already, smaller files and cheaper. Rather spend the extra money on lenses. /Rasmus
Discovered after purchase that The S1 does not output Trigger signal via HDMI, and also doesn't output timecode. Therefore the Camera can't trigger recording to an Atomos Ninja Unit which is a Big Flaw in my opinion... Maybe you could suggest this feature added in the Next Update... Cheers!
Another awesome review, what a great way to spend my lunch break, With nice people talking about cameras and photography. Keep up the great work and have an Awesome Day.
Without the common L-mount of Leica, Panasonic and forthcoming Sigma cameras the future of Panasonic full frame mirrorless cameras would be similar with that of Fujifilm medium format mirrorless cameras with GFX mount. Nearly all people who pay more than 2000$ for a camera know the importance of the variety of lenses. Sigma is great with lenses and if it is focused in L mount, Panasonic will have a great support of affordable L mount lenses. Leica full frame L mount lens are fully compatible with the Panasonic full frame mirrorless cameras. They exist since 2015 with the introduction of the Leica SL full frame mirrorless camera. However Leica lens are not plenty and are very very expensive even for rich enthusiasts. On the other hand they have great quality. Professional as long as they have profits don't care about the cost of their equipment.
I was considering buying in to the system, but then i read an interview of the Sigma CEO that stated that their L mount lenses are not going to be able to use DFD tech! Without that, Sigma lenses are going to be crippled as the Auto focus is going to be affected really bad... I really hope they work it out cause i value both brands a lot, but as it is at the moment, i see very limited future for the platform.
Achilleas Labrou Panasonic might attract Leica user to try Panasonic camera and lenses and vice versa. Every first party lenses are expensive (Canon, Sony, Panasonic). It's nice to have Sigma as an affordable options
I think for this camera to win converts from outside current Panasonic owners it needed to be extraordinary but it’s merely very good. It will be interesting to see how sales go.
@Phil Jones65 Sony A7 iii outsold all Canon and Nikon mirror less in Japan in Q1 2019. I expect Pansonic monster camera won't even make a blip in Sony sales. It's a total irrelevance.
@@thewalkingvloggingman7152 do you have sales figs for Panasonic cameras? You do know that Panasonic are not just in cameras don't you? With 2021 figs showing around 4% of market I don't think 2022 is going to look any better for a camera manufacturer who continues to ignore their camera's biggest failing, auto focus. I have many Panasonic cameras , lots of Sonys and a few Canon. The reality is most of my Panasonics are old because nothing has changed since I bought them. Sony and Canon are doing well cause they understand people want great auto focus in 2022 not performance they could have got in 2012.
I had a 10-min play with the S1 and it's humongous with the 24-105mm/f4 lens. OMG the combined weight is stupendous but I've to admit I'm not into weight lifting. The focus seems responsive inside a mall, images are sharp and the colors are punchy. I was given the permission to stick my own SD card into the S1 to take some sample photos, which I can review more. Overall it's way too big and too heavy for me. The Sony A7III+24-105/f4 is much more suitable for me
With a selection of cameras to choose from, Sony A7 iii and A7 R iii and the smaller Fuji XT30 I often leave them all in the hotel room in favor of my Samsung S10+ phone - It's like Panasonic lost the plot and thought doing something different = doing something better. It would be a cold in hell before I took a camera that big out for a day.
@Choong Cheok Wong You're being way overdramatic with the size and weight. It's a pro camera with a pro body. Try using the comparatively toy-like Sony in heavy rain and see what happens... In his review Kai W litterally has the camera under running water in the shower. No hiccups.
@@en.6565 I am more than happy with my 4k 8 bit video and I expect 10 bit will come in my new A7 s iii when it comes out,. I 'll be able to use all my Gmaster lenses too plus the video will be in focus and not pulsing. P.S Dont call me names , stick to facts

Thanks for a great video. At last someone who has really explained the difference between tase detract and contrast detract. It's been 18 months since you did this video. Do you know if focus for stills has improved with firmware updates?
Hmm. On the one side, I think it’s nice that we’re finally over the miniaturisation of cameras. A pro camera you want to work with all day needs buttons, a deep grip and long battery. All that (very often) means: bigger body. So that’s nice. On the other side, snappy AF matters for many shooters. And with a body that big and expensive (and a limited selection of lenses atm), I am wondering: wouldn’t pretty much everybody be better off with a D850, 5D4, A7iii at this price point?
Franz Steinberger No, because none of the cameras above can do 10-bit video internally (or externally via HDMI) and with the upcoming update, the S1 will be the only full-frame hybrid mirrorless camera on the market to do 10-bit 4K 4:2:2 internally, so people shooting photo and video can have the best of both worlds in one body.
You make some good points but l expect Panasonic's prices to drop. Full frame mirrorless is in a frenzied state with the intense competition and shrinking camera market. As an old Nikon shooter l went down the D850 path and for now will watch from the sidelines. One thing for sure, lens prices using Nikon and Canon as examples are on the up.
There's a very large list of things the Panasonic is better at than its competition and a very short list of things it's comparible or worse at. In the end it just comes down to which of those things are most important to you as a photographer.
Oysters of any kind - eww (sorry Rodney). The screen mount reminds me of the K-1. S1R would appeal to me more but I want to see reviews with the MC21 and Sigma lenses; how well will this marriage work?
Over four years on and some camera systems are still catching up with the wondrous NX1: 15FPS at ful resolution, 4K DCI, 6K down-sampled to 4K with no crop, custom flat log profile, H-265 codec, up to 180 bitrate (with hack), detailed video to die for, WIFI/NFC/Bluetooth, BSI-CMOS, still the highest megapixel sensor (APS-C), 205 Phase Detection AF points (153 cross-type) and 209 contrast detection points, one of the best in body ergonomics, a full and gorgeous touch screen and in-camera colours up there with Canon or better. All of this in 2015. It's parents might be dead but it's child still lives on.
I just won an S1R for free so it's just another camera to add to the arsenal, great for portrait photography so ill be excited to see how to plays out, check my Instagram @trent.palmer to see the S1R's quality first hand
You're watching the birth of a fanboy. Some new camera comes out. They have their hearts set on it and make the decision to buy it. And then they resort to personal attacks before they even get their hands on the camera.
@Phil Jones65 It's priced competitively for its feature set but I agree, all mirrorless systems are priced higher than it feels like they should be. I wouldn't expect that to improve though. With a continuously shrinking market, camera manufacturers have to rely on per unit profit margins rather than making money through volume. Dedicated camera equipment has become a niche product so those of us that use interchangeable lens camera systems are just going to have to accept that prices will remain high.
For me, it's mostly the lenses as to why it would take a lot for me to switch. Anyone who's been with Canon or Nikon or even Sony for very long has invested lots of money in glass. Not to mention flashes, grips, filters, odds and ends and various accessories. I can't even imagine what kind of camera and features it would take to get me to switch and reinvest - even if they offered the same lenses, which the don't. I guess they're marketing to new photographers? But that's a tough sell when there are more established brands that are cheaper with better lens selection.
@@timjanjeselnik4680 I use AF for almost everything. I love the AF personally, but I come from using the GH5s so my expectations were very low. Its not good in super low light(at 51200 iso). But I really like the look of the AF for faces and animals. Its a nice speed and seems to track well.
@@GeorgeNiksch thanks, im currently using a nikon so any focus is better than that for video. This camera has my interest 95% because of good colors and image quality. Auto Focus while filming is the only thing that worries me and is keeping me from purchasing the camera.
@@timjanjeselnik4680 If autofocus is really important, the A7iii is great. I just prefer the S1 because it has better stabilization and it matches my other Panasonic cameras really well. I also really like shooting in 10bit on the GH5s, so that will be great when the upgrade comes for the S1 in July. The autofocus on the S1 is totally useable, but not as good as Sony or Canon.
Neat camera for the right applications, but that DfD just doesn't seem to be adequate for what I need (wildlife, children running around). I'm happy Panasonic's playing with Canon, Nikon, and Sony and it's going to be a fascinating next few years watching the market contract.
I love the Panasonic commitment to their no compromise system build. S1 would be my choice both in terms of practical use and cost. The lens offerings look really appealing with Leica (affordable only to the few) and Sigma also on board. I understand those who may not go with the Panasonic DFD AF but chacun à son goût. BTW - thanks for this excellent and entertaining review.
This is not a review, it is just an advertisement Here shown of all the characteristics described in the documentation. Where can I download examples of shots taken in the RAW and with different characteristics of illumination and lights ? Where is the luminance scale with dynamic range? Also test on the sharpness of the camera is not made correctly!
It is a very hard choice to invest a lot of money into unknown lens base and marginal auto focus system. Let's face it, for travel and hiking it is a quite heavy system. It will be difficult for Panasonic to penetrate the "Sony" mirror-less "monopoly" , and the Nikon and the Canon with low cost version RP ???? Anyway it sounds like a good camera.
Reviewers should start giving credit to Sony. You guys should’ve said; “the S1 is their Sony a7 III version and the S1R is their a7R III version” instead of their 24mp and 47mp 🤣🤣
Looks like a tipical Sony. Very prime colours, and very desaturated hilights. MASSIVE lenses, slow and all the problems of full frame. I would not swap for my GH4.
Nicely done! Great cameras and lenses no doubt, but big and expensive. I'm sure there's many who will appreciate. I'll look forward to the smaller models (closer to GX -style) in future. As a general comment, has so many been reduced to "content creator" levels nowadays? One isn't favored to become their own master nor the ultimate creator, but just some "content churner". All the assembly line workers feeling "content creators" woowoo and off the roof. It's just a comment to the trends of times and how the masses and shaped...
I personally don't see the term content creator as a negative descriptor. I think of it as describing more of a versatile (multi-media) creator, rather than a content churner. There are many professions out there that require high-quality photos and videos for online marketing or documentation, and I could see a camera like this being used for that. It can produce extremely high-resolution stills, good looking 4K video and other professional features. One thing we didn't mention (and should have) is that Panasonic kept some of the basic settings on the dial. So if the S1 was being passed around an organization for content creation, non-experienced users could get good results out of it.
Paid updates, they are really milking this camera cow. It`s expensive enough as it is, especially when you have so much competition and a much better price.
I expect they'll be in the bargain bucket soon, hopeless cameras with lousy autofocus, heavy, massively over priced and with expensive and limited native lens. It's like they haven't been into a camera shop recently and seen what is selling, i.e. the Sony A7iii which is outselling the Nikon and Canon mirror less together.
ourtvchannel doubt it... If you want a plastic fantastic with poor ergonomics and color you always have to finish in post, then Panasonic is in the dust bin. If you want a robust pro tool that has top of the line color, resolution and contrast, excellent comfort and customization options, then you'll buy the S1 (with the added benefit of keeping most RUclipsr wannabes away from it and thus from ruining excellent photographic features with their constant complaints, at least for the s1r)
Those 2 cameras are great but also anvils... With the 50 F/1.4 L mount, they weigh 2kg ! Too much. I had a A7RIII and I changed for a G9. That's an excellent body, much better than the Sony, and some M4/3 lenses are really amazing. Don't ever trust marketing when they say that FF is the holy grail... Think by yourself.
@@en.6565 Yes, because that FF camera crops 1.5x to do 4k60 while the X-T3 only crops 1.18x. Since the sensor size is irrelevant to the processor this means the Panny has a worse processor or one that is tied up by something else, most likely the DFD calculations. And they call it 'no compromises' camera lol
@@michael007ish Fair enough, when you stick to small and light lenses. I tried it once, and for me it's completely unbalanced. Such a light camera and a big heavy lens.
Not an ideal travel camera that´s for sure, but it feels awesome when you hold it. In the end I think the weight of a full frame body is negligible, cos paired with most bigger lenses the body isn´t really the problem. The grip of the body though is much more important and thats where the likes of XT3 and even the A7iii just wouldn´t do it for me personally.

If I will add the system it would be the S1, plenty of resolution already, smaller files and cheaper. Rather spend the extra money on lenses.

Discovered after purchase that The S1 does not
output Trigger signal via HDMI, and also doesn't output timecode.
Michael Davleris Sigma L mount has C-AF based on the website. I'll wait until it's released and compare
Achilleas Labrou Panasonic might attract Leica user to try Panasonic camera and lenses and vice versa.
Every first party lenses are expensive (Canon, Sony, Panasonic). It's nice to have Sigma as an affordable options
I have the S1R (love it), but I want to know where you got the S1CK A.F. t-shirt. That's a must have!
beautiful camera : )
The S1 is the camera I would really like to own, I just cannot justify it right now.
Which camera has better dynamic range, the Canon EOS r or the Panasonic s1?
Panasonic s1
Panasonic. Canon's are trash 🗑
Didn’t they say that the video was being shot on the S1? Right at the end the video stated it was shot on GH5 lol?
It was shot on the S1. We usually shoot on the GH5, and the slide was added at the end by mistake... 😶
TheCameraStoreTV thought that migh have been the case, easily done. Great video regardless team :)
😂😂
Excellent review...thank you. Do you think Panasonic will release a firmware update for a CF Express upgrade to the S1/S1R?
6:39 'As Ev will demonstrate in this death-defying act'
Death-defying is right, I nearly had a heart attack!
Great video guys could you tell me if the S1r has a photo aps-c crop mode
Are the S1 and S1R still stuck at base ISO when an external flash is used like with their MFT cameras?
Great review from a two person perspective.
Got one 2 days ago and its a steep learning curve x.
@@ourtvchannel
Bad info. Panasonic will not be in business this long if their products didn't sell. Sony fan boy.👎
Sony and Canon are doing well cause they understand people want great auto focus in 2022 not performance they could have got in 2012.
does it come with a lense as well?
You can purchase it in a kit with a 24-105mm F4 lens.
@@TheCameraStoreTV Thanks
@@ourtvchannel Troll some more and enjoy Sony's outdated 4K 8-bit 4:2:0 internal video!
@Choong Cheok Wong
You're being way overdramatic with the size and weight.
@@en.6565 A troll is someone who has zero profile info and takes pride in cowardly hitting out at ppl's comments. If you can't discuss things based on facts just crawl back into your Panny world. If Pro means gigantic size to you, you go ahead and buy it, no one's stopping you. It's way too big and heavy for me.
NO!!
Paying for video upgrades is awesome! Keeps the price low and cuts down on useless features while keeping the VIDEOGRAPHERS at bay
Oysters of any kind - eww (sorry Rodney). The screen mount reminds me of the K-1. S1R would appeal to me more but I want to see reviews with the MC21 and Sigma lenses; how well will this marriage work?
Great video. Keep it up :)
Talk about the s pro lenses
thanks
Great review of a great camera.
I love Evelyn... I mean.. the camera. Love the camera.
Evelyn is....eh...well done Jordan! Oh..nice cam..yep... very nice cam...almost forgot about that.
Nobody cares. This was about the S1 and the S1R!
@@thewalkingvloggingman7152 You may not care.
I just won an S1R for free so it's just another camera to add to the arsenal, great for portrait photography so ill be excited to see how to plays out, check my Instagram @trent.palmer to see the S1R's quality first hand
$5000? They cray cray.
You're watching the birth of a fanboy. Some new camera comes out. They have their hearts set on it and make the decision to buy it. And then they resort to personal attacks before they even get their hands on the camera.
adamaj
S1 is $2499, S1R is $3699 MSRP.
@@en.6565 That is US dollars. The S1R body is $5000 in Canada.
Great video! I love my S1 for video! It pairs great with my GH5s and GH4.
Can I just ask, how much does AF affect your video? Do you find it good enough?
Nice Camera
I love the Panasonic commitment to their no compromise system build. S1 would be my choice both in terms of practical use and cost. The lens offerings look really appealing with Leica (affordable only to the few) and Sigma also on board. I understand those who may not go with the Panasonic DFD AF but chacun à son goût. BTW - thanks for this excellent and entertaining review.
U guys are too sweet in reviewing the products. I don't kinda enjoy it. Will love to see you being more critical about things that are dud
This is not a review, it is just an advertisement
Here shown of all the characteristics described in the documentation.
Where can I download examples of shots taken in the RAW and with different characteristics of illumination and lights ?
Where is the luminance scale with dynamic range?
Also test on the sharpness of the camera is not made correctly!
You two are better than Christ & Jordan.
The shirt is nice but so ironic: S1ck A. F.; Lol
You guys should’ve said; “the S1 is their Sony a7 III version and the S1R is their a7R III version” instead of their 24mp and 47mp 🤣🤣
nice camera BUT WAY OVER PRICED compared too the major brands like Nikon and SOny
Looks like a tipical Sony. Very prime colours, and very desaturated hilights. MASSIVE lenses, slow and all the problems of full frame. I would not swap for my GH4.
Or GH4
nice:)
Yummy yummy snot rocks.
@ 5:40 50% speed and enjoy
C’mon dude.
Will keep the VIDEOGRAPHERS from ruining things with their complaints.
ourtvchannel doubt it...
I don’t think Fuji use phase detection.
Yes Fujifilm uses phase detect on their current X-series.
Full Frame is better, deal with it.
Xt3 is laughing right now
😂 So am I lol. DFD is inherently flawed especially for video.
G9 more like ;)

Laughing at a full-frame camera with its APS-C cropped sensor?
@@en.6565 Why not? Sensor size is a small part of the picture. Literally.
She must be dressed decent. Or is it a kinda clickbait?
Thumbs up for the hosts, not so much for the camera.
Way too big.
It’s all personal preference, some like bigger bodies, some don’t.
No. Likes of the Sonys are way too small. Especially when you put a G Series Lens on it.
Jürgen Kühner just right for me. That’s why I own an a7r ll. I don’t use G Master lenses and all mine are small. So for me it’s ideal.
Do something interesting, your shows are getting boring
