I have GF1, G5 and G80 and color science is different for all of them. But all of them have consistent results. GF1: somewhat dull, but natural colors. Awesome dynamic b&w mode that is quite hard to match. G5: quite nice colors, somewhat towards orange in the dark which is surprisingly not bad. My preferred color science. G80: it seems that blues (sky) are darker and more saturated and images are rather cold looking. Works well except snow - it removes all warmth and makes shadows too dark blue.
I've been following the S1 series closely. This is the best look I have seen yet of the S1R. Great job! As usual, you provide many examples and you cover the features very well. Your high praise of the overall image quality is what I was looking for. I'll be watching for your complete review after the camera is in production; and the S1 as well! Hopefully there will be an ultra-wide lens suitable for real estate photography very soon.
Excellent review/preview as always. As has been stated before, no anoying music, weird transitions and other silly things. Very well made, high quality, good narration and information that's very to the point! Unfortunately I can't give two thumbs up for the video so you'll have to satisfy with one :) Regards Rasmus
I’m a Nikon dslr shooter . I really like the looks of this camera. It seems to function extremely well. I believe in the short future Panasonic will one of the best af systems . The build seems phenomenal and as a professional event and live music photographer and videographer this is important to me . Thanks for your very good review
Panasonic S1 will be my next camera along with the Nikon D850 for weddings, S1R too expensive. I will buy with the KIT 24-105 and maybe the 70-200 F2.8 when it is available, they say it will be released by the middle of this year. I look forward to the revision of S1. You are extraordinary The Hybrid Shooter, there are few serious and impartial reviewers like you.
best plain language review i've seen yet, no hype, no bs, beautiful examples, i'll buy one with the 24-105 which appears to have much better edge to edge sharpness than canon, nice goin'.
As plenty of others have state: the best pre-production Panasonic S1R review out there yet! Excellent and quality content. I'm really happy for Panasonic. They nailed it. I've been trying to find fault with this camera. And I can't. The compromises they made were smart ones. I think they only thing remotely worth finding fault with is the price. But as this camera is geared for professionals and so packed with excellent features, the price is quite reasonable. Professionals just don't upgrade cameras often. This camera should give excellent results for plenty of years if the production version is as solid as it should be. Considering how they did with the GH5, GH5s and G9, we shouldn't expect anything otherwise. I recently saw a review of the new Panasonic 50mm f/1.4 S for the new camera and the reviewer was absolutely giddy about it! In short and in my words: a Zeiss Otus-caliber lens WITH super-fast and quiet AF at half the price AND Leica-quality certified! I saw a new video by Panasonic for the S1 and 50mm lens and it is truly impressive. And that was with the much-lesser pixel count of the S1.... I wish I can join the fun as I'm firmly in the Panasonic m43 camp. With the variety of work that I do, the quality of Panasonic m43 is more than up to the task. I know I'll get a larger format sensor eventually for higher-end work and Medium Format Phase One is at the top of my list. If Panasonic engineers are passionate photographers, the Phase One folks are fanatics! But you pay for that fanaticism as well. The Phase One 'refurbished' digital back and new camera body is 8x the price of the S1R. But those are cameras you can use for 10 years as well for high-paying jobs. When the time comes, it's going to be a tough call.... Panasonic, you have really been doing a fantastic job especially the last few years. Keep up the fantastic work and thank you for working with The Hybrid Shooter to produce excellent, informative and smart content!
S1 is much better match for the A7 III, S1 and S1R have much better usability and features, Sony is smaller and it has much better lens selection at the moment.
I actually like this camera. I know the lenses are really expensive but I really want to get the 24-100 and the 70-200 so I can go shoot weddings. My G9 would be my secondary unit with its 7-14 and Leica 100-400.
In my G9, I use a EF 0.71 Metabones Speedbooster + Sigma 18-35 1.8, and I say: amazing combination. Better than this would be a Canon Lens L series 24-70 2.8. My opinion: SR1 is a Pro photography camera, so... S1 (the hybrid one) deserved a flip screen. With paid upgrade, we'll have HDMI out 10 bit 4.2.2. Anyway, S1 is an amazing camera.
@@MarceloLangame I have used the 18-35 on the G9 and I was not happy with it. Rotatable / tilting screen is always a matter of preference. But I am also looking forward to S1 with full featured S1.
Exactly ten years ago, I bought a Canon 5D Mark II with 24-105L. I never bought another DSLR. Maybe the S1 or S1R with 24-105 will be my next upgrade??
hey man, thax for awesome reviews. I still doubt it about Sony7iii 8 bit thingy! should I worried ?Do I need get a 10bit camera or sony is just fine for shooting videos?
Hopefully you will have the opportunity to view the comparison's between S1 and A7iii in the future. That one I look forward to. Thanks for your reviews.
Great review, first thought I mostly do pictures suffice it to say I think the S1 would be an excellent choice for me price point, being value reason number one, reason two file size shooting raw on the pc takes up alot of space and PC power, point two I glad they don't have an articulating screen on it purchase the monitor that you showed on the video, I had a flip screen on my Canon 60D I felt like it was going to break especially if I let someone else use my camera. This screen setup will not cover the HDMI port and USB charging port screen looks very durable. Maybe by the end of the year I may let Panasonic earn my business.
Nice review, I just really hope prices go down a bit after release. One question, at 0:17 the peak design strap you're using is it the Slide or Slide Lite version ?
Nice review, straight to the point and very nicely presented. Also the camera seems to be very good, but it will have a tough time against the competition.
Just a question :) there is a kind of electronic adapter to put m4/3 Panasonic lenses on this camera to get better reach using cropped part of the sensor? Useful feature for who is using also m4/3 Panasonic cameras and want long reach telephoto lenses for "free". You still get decent megapixel with crop I say.
Naturally, I have heard of that, but there are no small / light lenses for L-mount and there are no budget friendly options, although Sigma is at least less expensive than Lumix S and Leica lenses.
Thinking of picking one up with the kit lens for landscape photography; love my G9 but I outgrew the sensor. Can you comment on the sharpness of the 24-105mm across the zoom range? Does it stay razor sharp as you move towards the telephoto end? I rarely shoot at 105mm but it needs to be pin sharp at 80 to meet my needs (24mm, 50mm and 80mm are my most used focal lengths). Thanks from Canada :)
I unfortunately haven't had time for in-dpeth testing of that lens, from the samples that I shot it seems to be very sharp, but I will have to make separate review. If you have opportunity to publish / print pictures in format where that resolution is visible, it is a great landscape camera.
Thanks for the nice review. I like the overall form factor. I have no use for top side displays, since they take away too much of the most valuable space on a camera, the top plate. I would have rather seen another programmable dial and perhaps another function button. It will be an interesting comparison between this camera and the Nikon Z7, which currently is the only competition in my opinion. I really like the new menu system with the second tier of selections. Finally, having used both extensively, for a stills oriented camera, the tilting rear display is the better option for me. I like the centered display right behind the lens and the discrete tilt up or down without anyone knowing what you are doing. Perfect for street shooting. This is a very good first shot at a FF Professional level camera for Panasonic. I look forward to seeing what you have to say about the S1. Now, let us see what Panasonycon is going to do about the entry level price point that Canon has thrown down!!
Look at that creeper coming out from the corner LOL Timeline 5:59 you should smile more, my brother. You look like you about to rob a few banks to get this camera, LOL
Hi, Could you verify if the sensor is BSI? I don't remember seeing that anywhere and I believe one of the other reviewers even said that it wasn't BSI. Could you please confirm?
@@TheHybridShooter Good to know. I kept thinking what was so compelling about your videos and I've concluded that is something that lays beneath (besides the good explanations themselves) and that is: your humbleness (is that a word? sorry) as a base for the security when you talk. That's just invaluable.
If I see correctly, face / eye recognition only works from a short distance, am I corect? How much better is it compared to G9 (which is catastrophic, only works from 2 m away)
It switches automatically to body detection, once it is out of the range, in which case you wouldn't see details in face at all. I haven't compared it to the G9, but I will take a look at that.
When you take a 47 MP image and upload it to the web, doesnt it have to get downsized in order to fit the file storage specification of whatever website you upload it to? And doesnt that downsizing change the quality of the picture? And most monitors arent even 4K, which is 8MP, so isnt it wasteful to have a 47 MP sensor unless you are doing wall sized pictures? Wondering if my suspicions are true or not.
That always depends on specific publishing platform. For on-line 24 mpix in S1 is more than enough. If you publish smaller pictures the quality decreases of course. 47 mpix is mostly useful for large format printing and commercial photography.
I have been hands on with all three lenses as far as build quality the 50mm is much better, though I agree there is nothing wrong with build of the other two. I think it has to do with the 50 being "pro" I suppose
I know something about voice coaching that can attract hundred thousands more subscribers to your channel. I can email you the technique if you are interested and then it is up to you. I am not asking for anything in return. By the way, I think this is a fantastic camera!
This is my next (and the kit)! I am selling all my other FF and m43 gear, and saving some more money for this one. By the time it happens, prices will go down ;) then I will invest in a Fuji x100/200 or Ricoh gr iii for street and travel and this GAS torture can end!!!
The best ergo camera I've ever seen. But I'm worrying the DFD system is quite unique, so the lens need linear motor for fast CDAF, and the bokeh pattern is needed to be logged inside of the MCU in the lens. Those might make 3rd party manufacturers harder to release L-mount lenses. I hope Sigma would release L-mount specific lenses for S-1 series and their new Foveon camera with DFD compatible lenses.
I'm going to have to judge when I get one in my hand what I can say is the the portraits that Lumix release were terrible I don't know what they were doing but my GR is sharper..
@@TheHybridShooter I'm not sure there's a bunch of stuff that was put on dpreview guys wearing name tags and vests earthquake production crew and I'm sorry the pictures just to not stand up maybe the photographer wasn't using the depth of field correctly but I immediately said to myself my gr does better my old Sony A7 does better with a minolta lens
Here is the link I hope it comes through the second picture I'm sorry looks very bad the Landscapes look great but I'm a. Portrait guy so that second picture is a total turn off
Since it can shoot 6k I would like to ask: if I shoot video /picture without zooming with 6k and crop later, is the quality same as those non-6k shoot with zoom in 100mm or 200mm?
I own a Panasonic G9 and I wanted to go to the full frame hybrid Sony A7 III. I've been waiting to see Panasonic S1 what specifications it has and how much it costs. Disappointment, weighing double It's like a brick compared to the Sony A7 III, poor battery (half as much as Sony), the same problem hunting the back subject with autofocus contrast, 225 vs 693 (sony) focus point, is more expensive than Sony with 500$. The only advantage of Panasonic is 4k 60p and internal 10 bit recording ,considering the sony A7III is one year old on the market.
There is a lot more advantages that the S1 has over A7 III, and the autofocus doesn't hunt on S1. What your wrote is true, but there is more to that, I will make separate comparison videos.
I just don't see the point in considering the S1R in comparison to what Sony offers for a lower price, especially considering lens price and lens availability. Also, the top screen using old LCD technology is a big turn off.
There is actually a ton of improvements over Sony FF cameras and lot of reasons to consider Lumix S line, although Sony has much better lens selection.
@@TheHybridShooter I absolutely understand that the Lumix is overflowing with features in comparison to what Sony offers. I own 3 Lumix cameras and I would like to keep supporting them, but for me it just doesn't seem like a good decision wrt full frame cameras. I'm not the only one either, from the various photography forums and RUclips commenters in general, there's just not a lot of people willing to invest into Panasonic's S system it seems right now. Maybe that will change, but I'm not seeing the excitement.

The form factor of the camera body reminds me of the Leica SL, but with smallpox infection of buttons on its magnesium skin.
Hi,
Could you verify if the sensor is BSI? I don't remember seeing that anywhere and I believe one of the other reviewers even said that it wasn't BSI. Could you please confirm?
No, S1R sensor is actually not BSI.
Thank you. I was a bit confused when I heard you say it was. Waiting for your S1 review. Keep up the good work as always. (y)
Thank you, yes, that is a mistake.
how's the IBIS compared to the G9?
It is similar.
This image quality better than Fuji gfx 100?
No.
Great review! Appreciated. I only missed a dynamic range test.
Cheers.
Thank you, I will do that once the editing software is available.
@@TheHybridShooter Good to know. I kept thinking what was so compelling about your videos and I've concluded that is something that lays beneath (besides the good explanations themselves) and that is: your humbleness (is that a word? sorry) as a base for the security when you talk. That's just invaluable.
Thank you, I will do my best to keep it up!
@@TheHybridShooter thanks
Can you use ISO 50 for video with this camera?
I have been hands on with all three lenses as far as build quality the 50mm is much better, though I agree there is nothing wrong with build of the other two. I think it has to do with the 50 being "pro" I suppose
Jonathan Bradford the 70-200 F4 is also Leica certified, the 24-105 is not
Hmm I need loan, I was waiting for Panasonic to make full frame. Nice review.
Great review. Just one side questions: Is that really your voice, because I find it hard to match it with your appearance? :)
Thank you, yes it is my voice :)
I know something about voice coaching that can attract hundred thousands more subscribers to your channel. I can email you the technique if you are interested and then it is up to you. I am not asking for anything in return. By the way, I think this is a fantastic camera!
this is kinda funny, can panasonic boyz tell me: why should i sell all my nikon it sony stuff to switch into this system?
There will be videos about reasons to do or not do that later on.
This is my next (and the kit)! I am selling all my other FF and m43 gear, and saving some more money for this one. By the time it happens, prices will go down ;) then I will invest in a Fuji x100/200 or Ricoh gr iii for street and travel and this GAS torture can end!!!
Yeah it might be final solution, we will see.
So how does the A7III compares to this camera?
I will make a video about that.
@@TheHybridShooter Any ideas when you might be posting it? Thanks
Unfortunately not, I would need S1 for that.
Tell me about that 12-35 lense. Is that a native lense for it?
No, that is M43 lens.
@@TheHybridShooter but how did you get it on the S1r?
I did not, I used it on GH5 to film this review.
Panasonic is working closely with Sigma on AF compatibility, so I hope that it will work well.
Is the shutter release as sensitive as the G9?
Not quite, but it is similar.
I'm going to have to judge when I get one in my hand what I can say is the the portraits that Lumix release were terrible I don't know what they were doing but my GR is sharper..
Which portraits do you mean? Those lenses are extremely sharp, even though they are very big.
Portrait guy so that second picture is a total turn off
Those are definitely not samples suitable for judging the sharpness.
Since it can shoot 6k I would like to ask: if I shoot video /picture without zooming with 6k and crop later, is the quality same as those non-6k shoot with zoom in 100mm or 200mm?
It can't shoot 6K video. Cropping will always decrease the image quality.
@@TheHybridShooter Oh... sorry, it's 5k stated in the specs
What R stands for?
Resolution
Just if had flip out screen
I will change
But good job really
#HelloMyFriends!
Hello!
#HelloMyFriends! Love it! 😁
Super videa :)
Ďakujem pekne!
Maybe that will change, but I'm not seeing the excitement.
this camera is impressive
It indeed is.
You mean for video, the GH5 is the better choice, Panasonic is not trying to keep that a secret?
No, I do not. I haven't used the S1, so I can't compare it with GH5.
Bratislava 👍❤
This or the A7RIV?
A7R IV.
@@TheHybridShooter Thanks. Why exactly? Can you make a video about those 2 cams?
Better DR, AF, more resolution, lens selection, smaller and lighter. I am not able to make comparsion.
I suspect anyone would want to use this camera for vloging given it's size, weight and cost so rotatable screen isn't a must-have here
I agree, this is not very suitable for vlogging.
Great review, but the sensor is not BSI.
