    The manual focus override is the best feature. So useful for video shooter.

    Darryl, what about focus motor on AF mode with full-time manual (manual focus override)? Is it still linear (like on MF mode) or variable (non-linear) like in many other lenses?

    I'll be honest with everyone here: I shoot a lot of outdoor sports and have been working with the G9 and an S1 with the kit lens for some time now. I actually never use stabilization on the S1 in an attempt to conserve battery power.
    Here's a fun thing I'd love to see reviewed, third-party batteries for the S series.
    Oh, yeah. And if anyone can find if there's a third-party battery grip out there anywhere, please let me know.

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Adam, do you find the battery will drain fast when using the I.S? Never had a problem with the batteries with my S1/S1R when shooting all the day. Not seen any 3rd party products for the S series cameras, will keep an eye for them and will get some to review.

    Hey Daryl! I preordered this lens because I think it’s a must have for a wedding tog. What I love about the 24-105 though is that close up focusing. Were you able to do much of that? I don’t need true macro but at wedding it’s great to get close detail shots quickly without having to change lenses. Thanks for the review here!

      Hi Steve, its good to know you enjoyed the video and yes the 24-70mm f/2.8 is a great lens. Was a little surprised how sharp the lens wide open.

      Darryl Carey I have a feeling Panasonic is taking the pro moniker and Leica certifications very seriously as they did with the 50mm. I’m getting confident that these lenses are going to be stellar right out of the gate and that buying these will be rewarding.

    Hi! I have a GH5S and I want to buy a speedbooster for the use of the S PRO 24-70mm F2.8 lens that you used, how can I do that? Knowing that The S PRO 24-70mm has an APSC sensor and the GH5S a Micro 4/3 which speedbooster exactly to buy?

    On the filter issue, I recently heard that the cost effective way was to always buy 82mm and use step down? What are your thoughts on this?

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  4 года назад +1

      Buying a larger filter, will save you money if you are going to buy larger lens later down the road. But I have always used the filter size for the lens, when I upgrade I get a new filter for the new lens

    Hey Darryl, is the build of the lens "semi metallic" like the 50 1.4 or is it plastic? I'm looking at getting this lens but I don't want it if it's built like the kit lens.

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  5 лет назад +1

      Its built the same as the 50mm f/1.4 but not as heavy which is nice. I would say Panasonic lenses are up there with the Leica SL lenses, even the 24-105mm f/4 is very well built.

    Can I ask how would you compare image quality of this lens to 24-105mm f/4? I personally don't need f/2.8 and I would appreciate the stabilization of 24-105mm, but want the lens with best image quality. Thanks in advance!

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  5 лет назад

      Laci Kobulsky I would stay with the 24-105mm f/4 if you do not need the f/2.8. My S1H is always fitted with the 24-105mm f/4 great lens, super sharp and has I.S which the 2.8 does not

    Hi Darryl, I don't suppose you still have the lens? I downloaded your dropbox photos, but unfortunately the focus on the f/2.8 lens is on the knurled ring around the lens mount interface. You can see that this is sharper than the logo, whereas on the f/4 lens, the focus is on the logo, and the knurled ring around the lens is much softer.
    It wouldn't be possible to redo these tests would it? I am very interested in this lens, but don't really know what to make of it. Your part 2 review is encouraging though.

  • @cyvan1750
    @cyvan1750 5 лет назад +5

    I think you're making too much out of the lack of Lens IS. Lens IS tends to work better at the longer focal lengths. Even with the 24-105 Panasonic states you only gain 0.5 of a stop by using Dual IS. With an even shorter lens you'd gain even less if there's any difference at all. . Is that really enough reason to ditch all the positives you'd get from using it? Panasonic most likely did tests and realise that this IBIS was now so good that Dual IS wasn't worth the increased complexity.
    Also if I remember correctly , its the G9 that can hit 6+ stops of stabilization. The GH5 was limited to 5.5? So the S-series has a more advanced IBIS.

    • @Jinsuun
      @Jinsuun 5 лет назад +2

      yeah, no need for dual IS at these short focal lengths. IBIS is plenty enough (talking about video work).

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  5 лет назад

      Hi Dale, I shoot from the back of the motorbike covering cycling and triathlons so any extra help I can get I will take :) I did test the GH5 with Dual IS and was blown away by how low I could get the shutter and get pin sharp shots. I do change my mind in part 2 :)

    • @TimothyGordon
      @TimothyGordon 5 лет назад +1

      Nah, you’re dead wrong on this. Search for Dual IS tests on RUclips - having Dual IS with the GH5 was unquestionably better, yes at wider focal lengths.
      Dual IS can replace a gimbal for more than half of the situations I’d typically need one.

    • @CymBan
      @CymBan 5 лет назад

      @@TimothyGordon And that's because the IBIS for the GH5 isn't as advanced as the G9 or S1. So it would gain more from working with the lens via Dual IS. Also note that neither Olympus or Panasonic has OIS on any lenses 25mm or below, because its not needed. The only reason the 12-35 and 12-60's have it is because they go over the 25mm threshold.

    • @1fareast14
      @1fareast14 5 лет назад +1

      Stabilization specs are a funny thing. Even though the numbers suggest a half to one stop extra, my experience has been different. When I punch in for manual focus, just IBIS will drift from position to position. Dual is has another element to compensate motion, so I find the viewfinder is steadier when just holding still. However, dual IS seems jerkier when you hit the limits of the system, especially with telephoto lenses

    For me the 24-105 and 50mm have better quality at f4. There are some strange aberrations especially on the RH side of the camera where the rewind knob is and the flash sync ports.
    I realise it is pre-production and these can probably be fixed with firmware. Also found it strange that the DOF is much less at F4 than both the 50 and 24-105. the pentax wording is obviously the focal point, the spotmatic wording is less in focus than the 24-105 and the 50mm. Not sure why this is?
    I have both the 24-105 and 50 f1.4. was considering the 24-70 however, apart from the f2.8 aperture i can see no benefit and there are some limitation over the 24-105. i think at this time, will stick with the 24-105 as for me with the dual stabilisation and extra versatility of the additional focal range it fits me need better. On a side not i have recently purchased the Sigma 14-24 DG DN and it is a fabulous lens which fits nicely with he current lenses i own.
    Looking forward to your spotmatic review, i have a spotmatic f and love to shoot with it, i also have multiple sense for the spotmatic which i love to use on the S1 and SL previously, especially the 2 50mm f1.4's I have both the 7 and 8 element versions. Congrats on a great channel, looking forward to your next installment.

      Hi Martin, the image quality may change on the product lenses. Will have to wait and see. After using the lens in the real world, I started to really like the lens, it has a nice punch to the images and the focusing speed is really good for a mirrorless lens. Trying to get my hand on a review 14-24 sigma, not sure when they will be in stock in NZ. Great to know you enjoy the channel.

      The focus was missed. Looking critically, the focus point is a little forward, appearing to be on the geared ring (aperture?) on the lens. It looks slight more defined on the 24-70 compared to the other two. So that explains that in my opinion.

    WOW... outrageous pricing & sizing from Panasonic! The size of these FF lenses are ridiculous! I thought it was all about "size factor"! Even their latest MFT glass for their GH series is getting out of hand including the latest 10-25mm f1.7 not to forget the crazy price tag. I don't see how you afford all this but good on you Darryl.

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Richard, sadly FF lenses will always be big if you want the fast aperture and build quality. The price of the 24-70 is about the same as the Nikon and Canon offerings and cheap than the sony 24-70. But yes you are right the prices are a little crazy and sadly because the Lumix S series is so new, its very hard to find cheap 2nd hand lenses.
