It's rare that you have a band with a guitarist as exceptional as Marr who plays utterly without ego. You can count on one hand how many (brief) solos there are in Smiths records, he never sounds like he's constrained by this and fighting to break out. Brilliant player and brilliant musician.
Morrissey is indeed a force of nature. Ive admired his work for some years and finally saw him at Blackpool a few weeks ago. Despite his age, despite the people who discredit him, he was on absolute peak form. I hope to see him again sooner than later #VivaMoz
I've been learning bass guitar for 3-months now and I have made incredible progress. I have been learning songs I really like, but some bands are surprisingly difficult. I can say with some certainty that its going to be at least another year before I touch a Smiths song. He is a beast on that bass, yet he plays it in such a nonchalant way!
Saw him in Kerry in Ireland a month ago and he was brilliant still has the voice, was the first live show I got goosebumps when he played how soon is now 4 songs in, best sounding concert I'd ever been to by far. He joked about his perception in media etc and never preached or anything so he still puts on an amazing show and people shouldn't be put off by his politics or anything and still catch him while he's still here.
I only got into The Smiths about 18 months ago, having overlooked them in the 80's. I wish I could have turned the clock back 35 years and appreciated The Queen Is Dead when it was released. Great album. Great band. I adore Morrissey, one of the funniest and most intelligent lyricists ever.

Being a twenty year old in the early eighties , going to art college , How soon is Now , was a siren call to the alternative music scene, that slide guitar unbelievable , Ive listened to that song thousands of times since then and still gives me shivers
I was a bit younger, but How soon is Now, still gives me shivers too! Hated when they broke up, but I think it worked out. I love Morrissey's early solo albums, the new ones are pretty good too.
I was into metal in me art college days. My eyes still roll thinking of them comparing indie guitarists to metal guitarist. 2 different beasts. But it was a constant talkin point.
Love it when Grimes does it in “Kill vs. Maim,” when the vocals get K-Pop high, nigh unreachable. (I don’t feel that’s cheating in that case though … I think it might be too high to humanly sing for most adults 😳😊)

Carolina where I lived and as we became friends he handed me a case of cassettes to check out, that included a ton of groups I'd never heard of: The Smiths, The Cure, REM, Violent Femmes...just all these amazing bands. I heard The Queen is Dead and was Absolutely mesmerized. Been a lifelong fan of them and the Cure ever since.
North Carolina here and The Smith's and REM along with the Pixies were the best of the best. I've lived all over the country now and I've found some great music but nothing compares to the Smith's!

I love your love for the man Justin. I’ve seen Morrissey live around 40 times now, I was very surprised TQIDead didn’t make the setlist on this last tour. Shows Morrissey has some class, despite what people say.
This is the best episode yet. Justin's observations are truly insightful (and amusing), and they indicate a genuine fan. Sometimes the greatness of The Smiths is simply taken as read, so it's nice to have a critique that foregrounds what makes them timeless by utilising less obvious examples.
In my list of top bands of my life. The Smiths were vital to my high school experience and are still a huge part of my musical life. Absolutely love them
Sunday night was epic Justin, just what I needed. My best mate and I have been to many (all?) of your gigs and this one was next level. On the way home we talked about how some of our fav hard rockers are no longer or can’t tour anymore, Whitesnake, Van Halen. So you have to keep going so this 48 year old can get his fix of glorious showmanship, musicianship, humorous rock n roll fanfare. Can you tell me any other bands that can deliver this package? Sure, there’s Leppard, Extreme, even Maiden but who else should we know about? And who is willing and able to make the long trip to perform for us in Aust? I’m bloody glad you do. A few nights ago, I was walking past the bathroom where my 13 y/o daughter was taking a shower. I heard an unexpected sound so I placed my ear on the door. I quickly realized that she was singing along to This Charming Man. I’ve only ever heard her play rap so I was shocked and delighted. 4 days have passed and I still haven’t said anything because there’s nothing more uncool than your parents telling you that something is cool.

I saw them on The Queen is Dead tour at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall in 1986, what a gig! They opened with this song with Mike Joyce's drum intro kicking it all off. Craig Gannon was brought in on rhythm guitar for this tour too. My favourite band ever and lovely to know you like it too Justin! Love your reviews, thank you!!

I would recommend any of them but right at this second in the spirit of Justin's video I can't stop thinking about the arm breaking guitar strumming Daniel Ash did on Kundalini Express. I tried playing that live a couple times at that tempo for that long and couldn't move my arms for a while after each time.
I was at the Brixton Academy (the best venue) in October '86 to see them play this. Bloody marvellous and thank you Justin for shining a light on this song. Maybe their most underrated or overlooked songs. It's absolutely brilliant. And the "Life is very long when you're lonely" line, it's one of those transcendent lines he's so great at. Arguably, their best.

I’ve never sat down to listen to morrissey or the smiths but this guy really does have that “thing” and something else. Real musicians without any fakeness edited into the track. It’s a dying art being true musicians and the darkness is one of the very last of true musicians. In my opinion at least. Great channel Justin, great Taylor tribute also well done mate. Xxxxx

Great vid as per, Justin. I must have been 13/14 when I discovered The Smiths. Changed my life for the better. Some 22 years later and I was lucky enough to see the great man live last Friday in Stockton. Still sounding absolutely amazing and appearing to be really enjoying his music. An unforgettable night.
This whole album is incredible, but I say that about every The Smiths album 😂 Morrissey's lyrics are absolutely genius in my opinion, and I know you love a good double entendre! But I agree with you as well that his voice is uniquely beautiful. The "whoa" effect with Morrissey is funny, as he throws these in quite often in his songs, and often I think he sings just to hear himself sing... But I want to hear him sing, too, so I'll happily eat it up! And he's still got it! If you have a chance to see him live, do it! His voice is just heavenly, and his range is still unbelievable. Marr's guitar is unrivaled as well. He truly is such a talent. And like we hear in The Queen Is Dead, his playing evokes a mood. It isn't just notes, it is a complete sound, feeling that enwraps your mind. He also seems like such a humble dude!! Although selfishly, I wish Morrissey and Marr weren't over, their combined talents created something special and unparalleled, and the albums they did make are perfect.
I like to think that Morrissey is happiest when he's yodelling. It doesn't happen much but there's evidence of it from the closing minute on The Boy With The Thorn In His Side (which also sounds lovely).

Big fan of The Darkness and your channel. Had tickets to the show in Cleveland that had to be rescheduled for your throat surgery. Was in attendance at The Nautica for the make up gig. One of the best nights of my life. The last show my younger brother and I saw together before he died. Anyway, please continue to analyze The Smiths. One of the most important bands full stop. 👍

You do realise that in order for one culture to displace another, the original culture has to be somehow removed. Immigrants moving to a place does not remove the 'native culture' but people leaving a place does.

I’ve always struggled being able to separate the art from the artist. Even times when I can, usually at some point while I’m listening to certain artist’s music, whatever it is that I don’t like about them pops up in my head. Sometimes I can ignore it, sometimes I can’t. And when I can’t, it just kills whatever good vibes I was feeling.
Ive loved morrissey regardless and imagined his words were twisted a lot but i heard the libertines drummer tell a story about him recently which makes me think differently about him
I'm the same. If I find out the artist is problematic it taints their work even if i try to look past it. There's been a few over the years and things are never quite the same.
Glad someone mentioned this. I love the Smiths so much, but I do struggle to separate the music from the racist crap Morrissey has come out with. Very disappointing. Especially because so many of his lyrics arguably speak to and for minorities and maligned people.

What an awesome band. The Smiths came in right behind U2 with a similar busy/heavy rhythm section that seems to evoke a sense of imbalance, uncertainty and danger. They made some exciting and wonderful music.

The Headmaster Ritual has some of my favourite ever lyrics. His lyricism is unparalleled in originality. And he's a colourful character. I don't think he's actually that bad. At least, not as bad as people make him out to be.
He's really not once you realize most of what he's been criticized for has been the way he speaks about and the content of his politics. So many highly respected and celebrated musicians have done things seen as 'evil' in the eyes of society, but Morrissey rarely ever does anything. At least not nearly as much as he speaks.

As someone who used to love Morrissey, this was refreshing. I like how you stripped his art away from all the undesirable things that seem to plague his personality these days. Morrissey was always right in my range, and I sang along with him so much in the early 90's that my mimicking was virtually perfect. I can't say this about any other artist. As a guitar player, no one is ever keen for a Smiths or Morrissey tune, but I do have a number of them in my back pocket.
God, I adored The Smiths - the perfect combination of Morrissey and Marr - something to rescue us from the cack, as Morrissey said, “Hang the DJ, as the music that they constantly play, has nothing to do with my life” omg that resonated. Morrissey was God and we were his love children …..

Even though Morrissey and Marr were the writers they had a great rhythm section in Joyce and Rourke, all 4 were fantastic! Love this song and album.

And Marr and Mozzo are famous for keeping them (Rourke and Joyce) from royalties and merch profits. Much like Ian and Billy of the Cult.

I’ve never sat down to listen to morrissey or the smiths but this guy really does have that “thing” and something else. Real musicians without any fakeness edited into the track. It’s a dying art being true musicians and the darkness is one of the very last of true musicians. In my opinion at least. Great channel Justin, great Taylor tribute also well done mate. Xxxxx

Great vid as per, Justin. I must have been 13/14 when I discovered The Smiths. Changed my life for the better. Some 22 years later and I was lucky enough to see the great man live last Friday in Stockton. Still sounding absolutely amazing and appearing to be really enjoying his music. An unforgettable night.
This whole album is incredible, but I say that about every The Smiths album 😂 Morrissey's lyrics are absolutely genius in my opinion, and I know you love a good double entendre!
But I agree with you as well that his voice is uniquely beautiful. The "whoa" effect with Morrissey is funny, as he throws these in quite often in his songs, and often I think he sings just to hear himself sing... But I want to hear him sing, too, so I'll happily eat it up! And he's still got it! If you have a chance to see him live, do it! His voice is just heavenly, and his range is still unbelievable.
Marr's guitar is unrivaled as well. He truly is such a talent. And like we hear in The Queen Is Dead, his playing evokes a mood. It isn't just notes, it is a complete sound, feeling that enwraps your mind. He also seems like such a humble dude!!
Although selfishly, I wish Morrissey and Marr weren't over, their combined talents created something special and unparalleled, and the albums they did make are perfect.
I just saw him at the Brighton Centre on Friday and he was awesome. Voice was incredible.

I like to think that Morrissey is happiest when he's yodelling. It doesn't happen much but there's evidence of it from the closing minute on The Boy With The Thorn In His Side (which also sounds lovely).

Morrissey and the Smiths are as important and relevant to British music as The Beatles. Saw him live last week, there is also a lot of footage on youtube. Completely amazing, his voice was beautiful.Both old and new material was sung. One of the best gigs I have ever had the privilege to see.

Big fan of The Darkness and your channel. Had tickets to the show in Cleveland that had to be rescheduled for your throat surgery. Was in attendance at The Nautica for the make up gig. You do realise that in order for one culture to displace another, the original culture has to be somehow removed. Immigrants moving to a place does not remove the 'native culture' but people leaving a place does.

I’ve always struggled being able to separate the art from the artist. Even times when I can, usually at some point while I’m listening to certain artist’s music, whatever it is that I don’t like about them pops up in my head. Sometimes I can ignore it, sometimes I can’t. And when I can’t, it just kills whatever good vibes I was feeling.
Ive loved morrissey regardless and imagined his words were twisted a lot but i heard the libertines drummer tell a story about him recently which makes me think differently about him
I'm the same. If I find out the artist is problematic it taints their work even if i try to look past it. There's been a few over the years and things are never quite the same.
Glad someone mentioned this. I love the Smiths so much, but I do struggle to separate the music from the racist crap Morrissey has come out with. Very disappointing. Especially because so many of his lyrics arguably speak to and for minorities and maligned people.

What an awesome band. The Smiths came in right behind U2 with a similar busy/heavy rhythm section that seems to evoke a sense of imbalance, uncertainty and danger. They made some exciting and wonderful music.

The Headmaster Ritual has some of my favourite ever lyrics. His lyricism is unparalleled in originality. And he's a colourful character. I don't think he's actually that bad. At least, not as bad as people make him out to be.

He's really not once you realize most of what he's been criticized for has been the way he speaks about and the content of his politics. So many highly respected and celebrated musicians have done things seen as 'evil' in the eyes of society, but Morrissey rarely ever does anything. At least not nearly as much as he speaks.

As someone who used to love Morrissey, this was refreshing. I like how you stripped his art away from all the undesirable things that seem to plague his personality these days. Morrissey was always right in my range, and I sang along with him so much in the early 90's that my mimicking was virtually perfect. I can't say this about any other artist. As a guitar player, no one is ever keen for a Smiths or Morrissey tune, but I do have a number of them in my back pocket.
