It sounds like Layne's still caught in the spirit of Alice in Chains. You can still hear him singing in between jerry and William. Haunting, yet as always, beautiful.

Why do self loathing songs resonate with me so much. This was great poetry. The best heart wrenching track since Down In A Hole. When I first heard this, I was going through some clusterfucked situations. Damn you Jerry; always nailing it on the head. This is what's missing from mainstream rock/metal; that gut-wrenching sorrow that makes you reflect and appreciate art/poetry.

AiC's music saved my life, I believe this with all my soul. When everything seems hopeless, you need to cling with someone or an artist, whose energy you can relate to... Listening to souless, fake hapiness shit on radio only makes you feel worst and disconnected from yourself.

I miss Layne as much as the next AiC fan but William DuVall should be recognized in his own right. I feel that the AiC fanbase is divided into two camps and that's sad. When Layne's mother gave her blessing for them to perform as AiC with William DuVall I gave Black Gives Way to Blue a listen and I was hooked. This song in particular sums up my life in the late 2000's when I lost my job in the housing bust.

This album came out before Addiction robbed me of so much. Layne & AIC were the only ones who could touch on my depth of feeling lower than low. Black Gives Way helped me through so much. It let me know that I didn't have “no way out" They (Jerry especially) tought me that you may not always win the fight, but it's the battle that counts and how you get up from being knocked down. I have a very special place in my heart for these guys and what they do. In addiction I felt so similar to Layne, I truly believe his voice got me through so much I couldn't describe. Layne tought me how to feel, and Jerry is teaching me how to heal. Just like someone else commented
“Somewhere in between William and Jerry, You can still hear Layne" It's hauntingly beautiful. Much love ❤️ guys 🤘

+joe Costello gonna have to agree with you 100%. I found a rare interview of Layne's and compared it to an interview Duvall gave recently and their speaking voices sound nothing alike. Duvall actually sounds like a tenor and lacks the timber and grit of Layne. It's a good song but sadly, it's no Layne.

I listened to this album and really only liked one song "check my brain." I ended up buying the album anyway. Most of the songs grew on me and I couldn't believe what I was missing. "Private hell," sounds like Layne and Cantrell harmonizing at 1:23 and even throughout the chorus. I bet if Layne heard this he would be proud. The old AiC is good but there's no denying that the new AiC isn't just as good too. What a shame it would be if AiC broke it off after Layne's death. What would be better having this band together still or not even at all anymore?

It explains my feelings perfectly. I really love this band, I've been listening to them since I was very young. Even at that time I felt drawn to their songs, although I couldn't understand a word... It was released during the 07-08 recession. So much great material was overlooked. They were never about “hits" though, I think that is what separates a “singer" from a genius musician and vocalist. I think Layne sent Jerry some vibes to “keep going" I feel like with AIC records I can listen to from front to back without skipping a track. Especially these last 3.

When I listen to the song I imagine the band members are in a graveyard in the night under pouring rain and lightning. There are shots of the band singing and playing instruments interspersed with the band digging up a grave. Jerry looks on as his bandmates dig a hole in the ground. Then they lower a coffin into the hole. By the end of the video they are shown to read the last rites and then they leave parting gifts in the grave. At the end, the man in the coffin is revealed to be Jerry or William all along (even though both were already digging the grave) and the guys start piling the ground back over the coffin and it fades to black.

This song touches my heart so strongly that sometimes when I listen to it I cry a little. It reminds me of the conditions of my past addiction that I have walked away from. However life still crushes me sometimes and this song is an anthem to the struggle of life in a way. Either way I've always been a fan of Alice in Chains and I miss Layne Staley but this new album really brings AIC back to life. Rock on Jerry Cantrell !!!

Uma das melhores bandas que já ouvi...uma das poucas que coloco e ouço o disco todo sem pular faixa alguma!!!
One of the best band I´ve heard...I put the album and listen all songs till ears bleed!

for the longest time i thought it was layne singing with jerry i mean for a good year lol this is proof enough that the new guy earned his place imo

  • @ApolloVR6

The double tracked vocals are just as hauntingly beautiful as the early albums. The common link- Jerry Cantrell. Layne was awesome but Jerry you are the real MVP and this band would be nothing without your BRILLIANT riffs and chilling vocals.

My fave song on the album...playing it over and over again. Giving me the good ol' AiC goosebumps I used to get in the past. Kudos to the guys, they really did a great job on this album. And a special kudo to William...he had some really big shoes to fill. Gonna see them live in November...can't wait!

It's nota about Layne, Jerry, grunge scene, music, etc. It's about every time you fall in deep depression you get back here to hear the PAIN. They always know How to translate the worse feelings to us. Thank you Alice in Chains, you are my best friend, you know how I feel, you know my thoughts, you know How I want to shout what I cannot talk.

I almost thought for a second that maybe they had recorded the vocal track for this with Layne before he died and finally used it in a song. Very good, DuVall. You had me fooled for a second.

    • @screamrad218

MrJimmyTide I think, they generate Layne's voice a little bit in some of their newer songs. With the updated technology we have today. Its possible.

27 dislikes? Really? How do you not like this? It's not logical. I respect everyone's opinion and preference but that's just ridiculous. My personal 3rd favorite aside from Nutshell and Phantom Limb. Cherish AIC!!

    • @ESPLTDH301
      @ESPLTDH301 7 лет назад

No views cuz today's pieces of shit are spoon fed Bieber, Rihanna, and 5th Harmony. And that which is considered mainstream rock now and is popular is so poppy and such simple garbage it makes die a little inside everyday. We are a dying breed my friend. Phantom Limb is gorgeous, dark, complex, truly vocalized, and has BALLS that only a dump truck could carry around. I'm glad it's still out there, it just sucks we have to dig so deep for it now.

Much like the guitar work on Rooster this song has great bits and pieces of odd timings that seem to place notes both in time and not at the same time. I love this song so much. The final drawn out cry at the end hits me in the feels every time
