Way underrated member of that band because everybody still has a boner for Layne. Don't get me wrong, he was amazing, but Jerry is the sound behind Alice in Chains tunes and most of your favorite songs, probably.
Layne was much a force behind the success of Chains as Cantrell was, of course we have a boner for him. having DuVall singing his songs while the band still uses AIC is like Dave and Krist getting a Kurt sound-a-like fronting a reformed Nirvana. no disrespect, just my thoughts and opinions. although their Black gives way to Blue album was modest, i have been disappointed with every release since. Just doesn't sound like Chains anymore, Thank God!
Can't believe this is 13 years old now. I still remember listening to it when it first came out. Everyone in this band past and present is talented AF.
When you listen to "no excuses ' unplugged from the 90's and then listen to this as loud as possible, you then realise that Alice are the most incredible wall of sound acoustic and electric out there , haunting and then brutal. Jerry you fucking legend
eric andrews as good as Layne was on vocals, the person who was responsible for all their music and a good chunk of their lyrics was Jerry Cantrell. Jerry was the brains behind the band and he's never lost his touch.
This is a deep song. The reason for the rooms located next to each other is that they are a family, living in the same house, but the different colored lighting in each room is indicative of their mental distance despite their physical closeness. The son has locked his feelings away from the outside world, and then internalization frustrates him as he tries to fix himself alone, hence the line "a run-down broke machine". He becomes angry with himself and tears down himself and the world around him, discarding the progress he might have achieved, as the little boy version of himself representing his hopes and dreams cries at the sight of such. I relate to this a great deal. The daughter has a self-esteem issue connected to her appearance, which may have been the result of bullying by her peers or her parents. Whether or not she is physically drowning is somewhat irrelevant because she most assuredly drowning mentally, constantly trying to find the light of perfection, a land where who she is becomes good enough. The father in the video is a clearly religious man, and his self-punishment may be the result of infidelity, or molestation as some people have pointed out so far. Or it may simply be sexual immorality of a more superficial kind, such as the very idea of committing such acts. His frustration with himself he takes out not only on himself, but also his children, and the video shows his son taking abuse in particular. The son is shown walking outside his door, and the camera zooms out to reveal a field of identical stone heads making identical, distressed faces. This is to convey the idea that no one can truly see inside your world, and when you don't let anyone in, people only see the outside, and all that conveys is a distressed look. They might suspect that there is more to it, but if you don't respond, they will move on. But you can't move on; you're still stuck in your own personal hell you've either inherited or created. You are afraid to let someone in, because who you are isn't "normal", and they'd just think you were crazy and weird and leave you. "It's why you never tell me, what's on your mind" So you push it down, and you don't let jt show, and you eventually reach a point where either you have to tell someone, or you decide that the "quick alternative" is a better choice. Or door number three, you engage in behavior that takes you away from reality while simultaneously slowly destroying whatever life you had on earth. The truth, the realness of it all becomes too difficult to bear without the crutch, until you crash and burn. Sound familiar? It should: two men named Layne Staley and Mike Starr took door number three not so long ago. I'm not saying they had any of the issues the people in the video have, but they share an inability to deal with their problems, because they shut people out. The big closing moment of the video for me is the desert scene. Anyone else think the desert looks familiar? It should. Take a look at the album cover for Dirt, and then look back at the video. See the resemblance? Think about the songs on Dirt. Have you listened to all of them? If you did, you might notice that all of the songs ooze self-loathing, misery, sadness, anger, and fear. Now look what happened to the woman in the video. She embodies the victim of these feelings, and in the video we finally see her pick herself up, and she no longer feels like Dirt, both its literal form and the emotions associated with the album. She no longer drowns in her own desert. We can infer from the ethereal nature of the scenery that she probably succeeded in taking her own life with the mirror shard, thus ending her suffering here on earth.
I'm so glad this is still inspiring people years later. Moral of the story: just because you think you know what someone is going through? Doesn't mean shit. No matter how physically close to your loved ones you happen to be, what matters is sticking together and being there for eachother emotionally. Having their back even though you don't understand. My life has changed so dramatically since I essentially wrote this essay on a RUclips video that I didn't think people would read, and I have lived through several of the traumatic scenarios depicted in this video since. Take care of one another.
I feel fantastic I know it's cliché, but what doesn't kill you really does make you stronger. My now ex-girlfriend was just like the woman in this video. Actually, come to think of it, she embodied all of these people at one time or another. Her family is very much like the older man in this video, in the sense that addiction runs their lives despite their apparent career success and conservative Christian values.

Alice In Chains actually formed before Layne was even in it under a different name (Alice N' Chains). Jerry was always the mastermind; and, in fact, it was actually Layne who encouraged Jerry to start singing more (instead of just writing), and also to continue the band in his absence. 😊 🤟 Edit: sorry if this comment was rude; I was just adding additional information that I thought you might find interesting.

@@darylloughran1356 NOT taking anything away from Layne, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Jerry wrote this and it came out on the radio and I said to myself "The boys are going to be just fine". It is an excellent song after all. I would love to hear Layne sing it but unfortunately we don't have that luxury. I don't see how my reply was idiotic. I'm sure I probably heard Alice in Chains well before you did as I was born in '85. Yeah he was the man for sure! But you act like I'm pissing on his grave or something by saying this is a great song.
The Greatest comeback album of all time. Its practically impossible for a band to comeback like this after losing their most prized asset. This has everything to do with Cantrell and Co masterful decision to select Duvall vocals to compliment Staleys previous legacy while sitting perfectly together with Cantrells going forward.
I was very hesitant to listen to Black Gives Way To Blue and The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here because they didn’t have Layne but I feel Alice In Chains still manages to be a great band even after the loss of their lead singer
HockeyShark It does! I've heard some rumors that this song was about the many times the band tried to reach Layne. They'd knock, call, try to contact him in any way and he wouldn't answer them. Even Duff McKagan tried to reach him.
I know this is comment is a year old, but they do it again on the title track of this album, and after seeing your comment I'm starting to think maybe that was intended
Hear footsteps creak the floor The shadows give away Someone outside the door Won't let 'em in Life damaged, gears to grind A run down broke machine That steals your peace of mind Before you know it's gone Lay, down, lay Silence burning, hold your tongue Keep us separate, sullen, dumb Hiding in a darkness under Boiling to the surface, stumble, fall A looking in view too long on the outside Desperate plans make sense in a low life A looking in view too long on the outside Desperate plans make sense in a low life These things I hate in you Also reflect it seems Distortion laced with spite Takes you out of me Lay, down, lay Hiding in a darkness under Boiling to the surface something Crawling on your skin, discomfort Makes you break and run, stumble, fall \m/
Actually missed the best part, and what makes the song for me is. A looking in view too long on the outside Desperate plans make sense to the low life I... It's the self deprication that we all have, and the fact he is saying, me (I), I AM the low life and THIS makes sense to me.
I just came here to say that f’n riff from 6:00 to the end of the song is one of the baddest riff’s ever from Cantrell. Man knows how to create some killer riff’s! 🎸⚡️🎸⚡️🤘🏼🤘🏼
I am recalling back the year 2006... a friend of mine gave me a call.... "Dude, theres an Alice in Chains gig in two months!" "Sure, you dumbass thats gonna be revival band." "No, they reunited with a new singer and starting tour, check it out on the internet!" "Oh, my god, oh my god!! Mom, dad? Will you give me some money for an alice in chains gig??!!"
2006, got a chance to volunteer at the Hultsfred Festivalen. Checked the lineup and there was Alice in Chains. Up to that point I had heard nothing about them reforming, so there was an immense surprise! And that is till date the most emotional I've been at a gig, tearing up and all that. \m/ (and stood next to a guy who was the doppleganger of Layne! Spooky)
You know when a small part of you feels relief for your fellow humans. Just heard this for the first time and I’m relieved AiC got to move forward as a band. There is too much talent and camaraderie with the original 3 and the new lead singer to be frozen forever in the shadow of Layne. Happy for this band. They clearly care.
It’s a stellar song off a stellar album, Private hell from this same album is imo one of the best AIC songs ever regardless of era, sounds like vintage AIC.
I remember buying this album day 1 and so fucking excited, helped me cope with college so hard.. making me understand some things die but must go on. RIP my lovely Layne ❤️
Me encanta ésta canción y el vídeo es genial, no me quiero imaginar el tiempo de edición ! y tan pocas reproducciones...acá nos damos cuenta el tipo de música que consume la gente. Saludos desde Argentina.
BGWTB is one of their best records, IMO. When I first got into them around the time this album came out, I liked it, but didn't love it. Now I really appreciate just how good this record is.
Zero The Hero is Sabbath's heaviest and most evil song. A Looking In View is quite similar. Kind of out of left field, and with a new singer. I love both. And respect for making this the first single of the new era. Modern Rock radio had no choice but to play it !
The song basically speaks to any number of things that keep you balled up inside. A cell of our own making with an unlocked door that we choose to remain in. Focusing our attention inward instead of reaching out to a much larger world. I think this is common to us all. It's funny how hard we fight to hang on to a bone we can't pull through a hole in the fence, or how difficult it is to put down the bag of bricks and move on. Even though Layne is gone William does a superb job on the new album.
@@thestrangemanreturns wtf you talking about, he’s talking about adjusting to William being in the band not Layne, nothing in his comment even suggests anything about William being black or anything along those lines
No adjusting needed here. He lacks the beast note in his voice, but so does everybody else. Thats why Layne will be a legend forever When it comes to sheer power of the voice though, he is definitely up there, man is a monster.
Ah, such powerful alternative metal. Alice in Chains are undeniable one of the most important bands in grunge, but they also happened to be a metal band, and the creators of the entire alt metal genre (with Faith no More and Soundgarden). Black Gives Way to Blue is a great comeback.
Someone already said it, but by far the most fuckin powerful comeback in all of Rock history. I don't care how people feel about William, this album DESTROYS. 💪💪💪
on this grunge scene man, considering the big 4 and the rest I believe jerry had the strongest instict in all of its mystery, it just doesnt die with him and he just stays loyal to it
I've never knew there was a clip for this song. The new AiC is freaking deep, dark and heavy, I like it. It sounds totally different for 90s AiC, but it's as good as that one.
It's not that hard to imagine. Doesn't feature Layne Staley and this is harder than they anything they did before. I mean, I like it. But I wouldn't be so ignorant to call anyone who didn't "no true fan" Get over yourself, wannabe gatekeeper.
@@scummy_mofo1802 nah fuck that, Layne’s my favorite singer of all time but anyone who acts like this isn’t good or it isn’t AIC is a clown, it’s great music with or without Layne. I just saw this video for this song for the first time just right now. All I can say is that the video is the most twisted video that Alice In Chains has ever released.
I remember AIC back in the day, was a big fan... kind of brushed em off in the last 10 years and have just gotten listening to them again... got to say this isnt bad! glad theyre still play music, still got a lot to give
"Desparate plans make sense to the lowlife"... I'm so glad these guys didn't break up after Layne died. They are fucking virtuosos in every way possible.
The biggest drivers of Laynes lyrics was three things his love of music in general , his addiction and his relationship with Demri. A Looking View In those things. It’s plain as day.
yeah all grunge artists have said they dont think they're part of a movement, but thats just because grunge artists were the most modest, unselfish people on the planet, us grunge fans will still behold them as gods no matter how much they try to shy away from the attention, but i agree alice is alot heavier than other grunge bands, they were still part of the movement.

like a song stuck in your head, the worm that dieth not.
nothing that goeth into a man does not defile. but that which comes out,
I loved black gives way to blue but not devil put dinos it sucked
When Alice in Chains gets to Doomriffing they do it well.
Now this is the old dirty, heavy, impending doom AIC sound I remember
Best song Post Layne, hands down.
That's an idiotic remark, Layne Staley was the man 🤘 all the same Jerry a genius
Hollow is great too. Probably their second best post Layne.
This is underrated. I love them taking the Alice In Chains style to an even darker and heavier level
I was very hesitant to listen to Black Gives Way To Blue and The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here because they didn’t have Layne but I feel Alice In Chains still manages to be a great band even after the loss of their lead singer
I couldn't agree more! I was hesitant to listen to the new stuff but the more I listen the more I like it!!
@@tnt8106 you people are weird and pathetic lol stop holding on and move forward
I get the chills every time DuVall yells "Lay!" because it sounds like he's yelling "Layne!"
Hell yeah... likes he’s reaching out in the abyss and trying to pull him back to us... but knowing there’s no use.
HockeyShark It does! I've heard some rumors that this song was about the many times the band tried to reach Layne. They'd knock, call, try to contact him in any way and he wouldn't answer them. Even Duff McKagan tried to reach him.
Totally....this would have been a killer live song with him
@@rumblefish9 the lyrics are pretty clear that's exactly what it's about.
I know this is comment is a year old, but they do it again on the title track of this album, and after seeing your comment I'm starting to think maybe that was intended
Hear footsteps creak the floor
The shadows give away
Someone outside the door
Won't let 'em in
Life damaged, gears to grind
A run down broke machine
That steals your peace of mind
Before you know it's gone
Lay, down, lay
Silence burning, hold your tongue
Keep us separate, sullen, dumb
Hiding in a darkness under
Boiling to the surface, stumble, fall
A looking in view too long on the outside
Desperate plans make sense in a low life
A looking in view too long on the outside
Desperate plans make sense in a low life
These things I hate in you
Also reflect it seems
Distortion laced with spite
Takes you out of me
Lay, down, lay
Hiding in a darkness under
Boiling to the surface something
Crawling on your skin, discomfort
Makes you break and run, stumble, fall
\m/
Actually missed the best part, and what makes the song for me is.
A looking in view too long on the outside
Desperate plans make sense to the low life
I...
It's the self deprication that we all have, and the fact he is saying, me (I), I AM the low life and THIS makes sense to me.
@@clarkfeeley1959 seems directed, well, directly at Layne.
"It's why you never doubt me"
I just came here to say that f’n riff from 6:00 to the end of the song is one of the baddest riff’s ever from Cantrell. Man knows how to create some killer riff’s! 🎸⚡️🎸⚡️🤘🏼🤘🏼
He's the Riff Lord.
@@someguyontheinternet2714 Indeed he is, bow to Sir Riff Lord 🙌🏼 🙇♂️
I am recalling back the year 2006... a friend of mine gave me a call....
"Dude, theres an Alice in Chains gig in two months!"
"Sure, you dumbass thats gonna be revival band."
"No, they reunited with a new singer and starting tour, check it out on the internet!"
"Oh, my god, oh my god!! Mom, dad? Will you give me some money for an alice in chains gig??!!"
You are winning, son
HAHAHAHAHAHA
2006, got a chance to volunteer at the Hultsfred Festivalen. Checked the lineup and there was Alice in Chains. Up to that point I had heard nothing about them reforming, so there was an immense surprise! And that is till date the most emotional I've been at a gig, tearing up and all that. \m/ (and stood next to a guy who was the doppleganger of Layne! Spooky)
Dunno why but I could listen to the ending of this song on a loop forever.
This is legit one of my favorite AiC songs of all time!
It’s a stellar song off a stellar album, Private hell from this same album is imo one of the best AIC songs ever regardless of era, sounds like vintage AIC.
My dude, "All Secrets Known". 🤟
I actually don't think that Alice In Chains has ever put out a bad song.
When your choice for a new singer is so damn good the first time you listened to this song you thought it was a posthumous work.
I remember buying this album day 1 and so fucking excited, helped me cope with college so hard.. making me understand some things die but must go on. RIP my lovely Layne ❤️
Man, this song always gets me. Such a dark, powerful, and well composed song (in my opinion)
AIC is probably going to go down as the AC/DC of alternative/grunge.
This song just rocked my face off. I cant believe I slept on this album for so long.
BGWTB is one of their best records, IMO. When I first got into them around the time this album came out, I liked it, but didn't love it. Now I really appreciate just how good this record is.
this is probably the heaviest thing ive ever heard in my life. the fucking sludge in that riff is so filthy my earbuds fell to the core of the earth
I'll never forget the first time I ever seen and heard this. Powerful in all the right ways
This is some dark and heavy s***. I love it!
Zero The Hero is Sabbath's heaviest and most evil song. A Looking In View is quite similar. Kind of out of left field, and with a new singer. I love both. And respect for making this the first single of the new era. Modern Rock radio had no choice but to play it !
6:52 reminds me of the dirt album cover
I was about to say that. It's a clear reference.
One of Jerry's very best riffs, such an incredible guitarist!
God damn. That fucking outro riff man. My neck hurts
No doubt, it’s a banger for sure!
My favorite song from the newer era Alice in Chains
Such a killer album. Had to adjust to William. But he really did an awesome job.
of course you did because he's black. Weirdo
@@thestrangemanreturns wtf you talking about, he’s talking about adjusting to William being in the band not Layne, nothing in his comment even suggests anything about William being black or anything along those lines
No adjusting needed here.
He lacks the beast note in his voice, but so does everybody else. Thats why Layne will be a legend forever
When it comes to sheer power of the voice though, he is definitely up there, man is a monster.
In my opinion, this is their best song after almost 15 years. Imagine Layne singing this. It would be something out of this world !!!
he wouldn't of wrote this. Give some respect to the new combo
My flipping word that opening. Very much the Phantom Limb of the Black Gives Way to Blue album.
Ah, such powerful alternative metal. Alice in Chains are undeniable one of the most important bands in grunge, but they also happened to be a metal band, and the creators of the entire alt metal genre (with Faith no More and Soundgarden). Black Gives Way to Blue is a great comeback.
Love you Jerry! Been listening since Facelift/Sap in high school. Time flies my brothet
This shows that Alice in Chains has not lost their touch at all, these guys still know how to rock.
Someone already said it, but by far the most fuckin powerful comeback in all of Rock history. I don't care how people feel about William, this album DESTROYS. 💪💪💪
There is no one in the last 20 years of rock that destroys riffs like Jerry.
on this grunge scene man, considering the big 4 and the rest I believe jerry had the strongest instict in all of its mystery, it just doesnt die with him and he just stays loyal to it
When I first heard this on the radio nonetheless? I said to myself, these guys are going to do just fine. You couldn't ask for a better Alice
I've never knew there was a clip for this song. The new AiC is freaking deep, dark and heavy, I like it. It sounds totally different for 90s AiC, but it's as good as that one.
amazing drums
Some parts literally sound like Layne is singing, wow!
I used to always listen to this and junk head when I would go cop. Still gives me chilled 10-11 yrs later
this song really made me feel like i was in the grunge time of the '90s. what a pearl....
Not one weak song on album.
That chorus is dope
man.. this one already is one of the greatest songs of AiC. Imagine if was Layne singing this. But DuVall is very good too.
+Pedro Henrique This is one of the best songs every for me. I love it.
+m0t0rcade This one and Last of my Kind are my favorites from this album
imagine not liking this but calling urself an Aic fan
It's not that hard to imagine. Doesn't feature Layne Staley and this is harder than they anything they did before.
I mean, I like it. But I wouldn't be so ignorant to call anyone who didn't "no true fan"
Get over yourself, wannabe gatekeeper.
@@scummy_mofo1802 nah fuck that, Layne’s my favorite singer of all time but anyone who acts like this isn’t good or it isn’t AIC is a clown, it’s great music with or without Layne. The real gatekeepers are the annoying no Layne no chains crowd who disrespect all the other members and try to act like Layne was AIC when in reality the band was so much more than just him.
Straight facts Layne era will always be the best and Layne is my favorite singer but this album is fuckin phenomenal and top tier AIC stuff even without Layne. Long live Jerry Cantrell, AIC will be alive and well as long as he’s running the show like always, shout out Sean and mike too they’re legends and Duvall is the man. Blows my mind that there are “AIC” fans out there who shit on this stuff and try to discredit anything not featuring Layne, Layne rules but the band was so much more than him, some of their best songs ever have been post Layne like private hell or this track.

Damnit this is a great song. Obviously we all wish Layne didn't leave, but I'm so glad Jerry decided to resurrect the band.
So everyone, imo, its drowning pool, alice in chains, and static x that have the greatest comebacks.
You realize its us that did this? If not for the absolute conviction to this stellar music, this wouldn't have happened? To all of us who sang, strummed, picked, and drummed in our rooms. F yea.
a master piece!
One of the heaviest riffs ever, kids.
4:24-5:07. About as close to the original AIC harmonies as you can get. Haunting. This song is superb! So underated.
best AIC song post Layne hands down
Man in the box reference?
drummachine77 the end looked like a reference to the Dirt album cover too
Great album.
They've come so far and it's only gotten better. Love new AIC.
I just saw this video for this song for the first time just right now. All I can say is that the video is the most twisted video that Alice In Chains has ever released.
Awesome song. WOW. Not all are that good on the album but this is great. Feels like TOOL at some beats : )

Not really
amazing lyrics, amazing riffs, amazing drums......this song never ceases from mind....
I love the ode to the "Dirt" album cover at 6:54
Forget The Sabs..This is the Most inspired band for the Beach Boys I ever heard !!! Happy Music !!! Salud y Vida Pa'lante !!! Cheers and Life On !!!
One of their best songs. Period.
Well done! Of course we miss Layne but one after the other they have knocked it out of the park.
I remember AIC back in the day, was a big fan... kind of brushed em off in the last 10 years and have just gotten listening to them again... got to say this isnt bad! glad theyre still play music, still got a lot to give
The riff punched me in the face so hard that I started loved AIC so much.
6:55 Dirt album cover (kinda)
1:25 man in the box reference
6:10 Jar of Flies album cover (I think)
M.L. Crow dam that’s bad ass
Awesome what an intro man!! Fuck yeah great voices!!
You can tell Layne is in this one, especially the distorted voice toward the end, kind of like his insignia. Moon Baby..FROGS
This is very reminiscent of early AIC albums like Dirt and Facelift. Very heavy. I like it.
This is honestly heavier than anything on facelift and the only possible dirt song that is heavier is them bones. I think them bones and this are their 2 heaviest songs, just absolutely crushing riffs on those
Esse clipe faz referências a própia discografia da banda, com o homem na caixa "MAN IN THE BOX" e a mulher na areia como na capa de "DIRT"
Underrated song, favorite off the album.
