I heard facial expression is important in sign language, but now I’m seeing it for myself! So excited and nervous. I told him “I will practice” (in broken ASL 😅) so now I want to have a proper conversation next time I see him!
Not dumb at all. Technically it would be wrong because the mouth morphemes are part of the sign so it’s be like leaving out a sound in a word. At the same time, this is actually common in PSE/contact sign/Total Communication where you mouth everything and therefore do not use morphemes.

is this how you describe anything small medium and large? like for drinks or meal size?
Great question. Sometimes people sign it that way but usually without the mouth morphemes. Usually it’s a shaken s, m, or l.

“Cha” is the mouth morpheme for LARGE 😊
