- Xfinity Pods - 2nd Generation - WiFi Extenders. It's testing time. SPOILER ALERT: I'm pretty pleased. Did you know that since the beginning of the year the demand for Xfinity Pods has doubled! It's obvious as to why. They are the same shape as the Gen 1 pods, but after that, the comparisons end. The testing video will be landing soon. I'll go over the xFi pods setup step by step here. Hello, comcast employee here, it is STRONGLY recommended to plug the pods directly into the wall and not a power strip. Many contain certain signal suppressors that interfere with the ones the pods use. If your particular power strip is doing this I cannot say but it’s more than possible.

I live in 2 bed apartment I barely get WiFi signal in the back rooms because I got the WiFi box in the living room. What’s my best option get 2 or just 1 xfipods not to big of an apartment. I don’t want to buy extra pods if I’m not gonna use them.
@@ronaldtagoai4142 Ronald, I would get one pod, and make sure it is the 2nd generation pod. That should take care of it for you. The 2nd gen pod has a longer range. I think you'll be good.
Since these get warm is it good to unplug during no use. And what about outages and lightening. I live in Florida so we get lots.

Thanks, Tom for the detailed explanation on connecting the 2nd. generation Xifi pods. This was a great tutorial as the Xfinity xifi pods have absolutely zero instructions on the installation( no paper documents, only QR code). I replaced my 3, 1st generation pods with the 2 ,second generation pods. I also had 120 per cent more on my presnt plan. I think I will get an improved speeds.
Great info! Followed the video and Pod connected! Unfortunately, all rooms lost speed but the weak rooms picked up a small amount. Was told by support to give it a week. Will report back..

Thank you, Jack. I would try the pods. I believe you have 30 days to return them. Check on that before you purchase them. Then give them a try. I would start with only 1 of the Gen 2 pods. It has great range. -Tom
Thanks for the Vid Tom. I have the new XB7 and speeds in my kids room where he games is only 45mbs with the gen 1 pods so I’m either getting the Gen2 or maybe the TpLink wifi6 mesh extender wich is only $90 compared to the $120 cost of one V2 pod.

Great video! Question on the Gen 2's. Can the ethernet ports on the bottom be used to pass through (Go from Router>POD1, POD1>POD2?)

Hi. I am just wondering, can you put printer thru pods' ethernet port? My printer only takes 2.4hz wirelessly and if I combine into one SSID (which is requirement for using the pods) it wouldn't work well. Thank you.
Will these help with the lag I am getting in my streaming tv right now? My xfinity router is quite a distance away from two of my downstairs televisions.

can the pods be hardwired to the XB7? I have reinforced concrete walls and hardwiring is far better if possible to get signal to other side of our house
Thank you for this video I am currently running 6 old school first gen xPods because of all the security cameras and other devices in my home. My home in Florida is one story, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and about 2300 square feet. Occasionally a couple of my cameras go offline, or my phones won't connect to the net on WiFi which is why I upgraded. I just bought a 2 pack of these and plan on installing them after returning from vacation. I was wondering if I will need my first gen xPods after I install the two new ones. Xfinity says to add them after the new pods have been in place for a couple days and recommends putting the old ones on exterior walls. Would that be overkill? i’m trying to use this on my xbox series x. when I plug the ethernet in the xbox reads that it has wired wifi but won’t connect to xbox network. as soon as I unplug the ethernet from the xbox it connects to the wifi. please help.

installed one in my detached garage and the modem is in the basement of the house. I have not tested the speeds but in the less than ideal setup it appears to be working great. setup took 5 minute s
SUGGESTION: if its near a coax jack get a moca adapter and plug it into that for faster speeds (ethernet backhaul) most xfi gateways support moca aswell
Anyone have an idea why a laptop that is 8 feet away from the gateway keeps switching to the pod on the other side of the house? It then loses connection since its such a weak signal.

thx on the video, I love the pods but their speed limit is up to 500 mbps (I only see their max speed to around 300-350) 😔 . On my case I currently have the plan for 800 mbps. I wish they will release a new model with faster speed supported.

Thanks for the nice comment, Thomas. The "Super-Pod" in the office is 4 rooms from the gateway. They are at opposite ends of the house and it's not a small house. I don't recall the speed I got in the office with just the gateway but I know that's in my video on the XB7 gateway. -Tom
I just got a 2nd Gen Pod. I wanted a hard wire in my office. Im pulling 475 down and pushing 110 up. Kinda surprised. Latency is not amazing but over all it will do what I need. I dont game much so the latency is not n issue for me.
How do you even buy them?!!

Steve, when you are logged into Xfinity on the computer or the app, it should say "see network" right under your network's name. The pods should be listed there. -Tom

Thanks for your video. Do I have to disconnect my range extenders b4 installing these? Also is there anything that plugs into the gateway?
Seb, I would not have any other range extenders going because that's what this does. But I think you still might get them to connect if you do keep the other range extenders on. You do not have to plug anything into your gateway. It all gets set up wirelessly through the Xfi app. Take Care, Tom

Tom, how far is you first pod from the gateway? I’m trying to get a good wi-fi signal through most of my garage which is approximately 100’ from the house. I get a steady 2 bar signal on my phone at the garage corner closest to the house.
Thought both your videos were very informative, quite a bit more than what I could gather from the Xfinity website.Greatly appreciate that you posted them.
L B, my first pod was about 30 feet from the gateway. That was on the Gen 1 pods. My Gen 2 pod is probably 40 feet away from the gateway. Hope that helps. Is there anyway you could run a CAT5 or 6 cable from your gateway to your garage? Maybe just put in in the ground like the cable companies do when they run it to your house from their service box?
Thanks, Tom. I’m going to buy one and give it a try in the corner of my garage. If it doesn’t work I can always take back. With the new gateway we have better coverage in the house so a pod there wouldn’t be necessary.

To get to the garage, wifi has to go through windows because it cannot go through brick...assuming you have a brick house. The best way to get to a garage is to have the gateway by a window that can be seen from the garage and have the repeater in the window of the garage (or wood garage wall)and have another repeater in the front of the house.
Another option depending on layout is gateway at the front /middle of house and repeater in the window closest to the garage.
Line of sight, if at all possible.
Hi Tom, with the gen 2 pods, are you using the XB7 router? I can't get my new pos to work with the xb7 and comcast now tells me the zb7 is not compatible.
Paul that is a all out lie . I have a XB7 and Gen1 pods and they do work but the wifi speeds are Trash but they do work. I pay for 1GB down and with the XB7 my wifi speeds are cut by 75% just moving 30 feet from the 7. The pods do work but in my case only marginal.
Paul, sorry for the slow response. I agree with Eric. It's working on my XB7 with no issues. It connected to it just like it did to my old XB7. This past week I connected my gen 1 pods to another XB7, and again, no issues in doing so. -Tom

The day after I installed the pod, I heard something repeat “please contact” three times! Could that be coming from the pod, and if so, what does that mean?
I've never heard anything like that before, James. To my knowledge, there is no speaker or anything in them.

Thanks Tom, As a long-time Xfinity customer and now with the high demand for wifi need between kids video conferencing, gaming and work, anything that can help lagging, wifi delays, etc. is good. So I too looking to ad a pod. But with so many mesh routers out there now, and the on going modem rental fee, what your thought on renting vs owning one of the many mesh solutions.
Claudio, I've been down that route. Here's my thoughts. I have a few netgear routers sitting in my office closet that are obsolete. I've been through some mesh systems too. I bought all of that and just like any other electronic device, it will become outdated. I don't like the monthly rental rates at Xfinity but I do like having the latest technology upgrades (and security) in a Gateway. I also like the automatic firmware updates that I don't have to attempt to install correctly myself. If you buy your own mesh system or router, is security a part of it or is that on you? I don't think you're getting just a piece of hardware with the Xfinity system. So is getting rid of those headaches worth the monthly rental fee? For me it is. As for the pods, you have to buy that. Now I've heard, and people have commented here, that if you contact Xfinity and complain about your coverage, they'll give you the pod(s) for free. If that's the case, then it's a no brainer. I've told people in the comments that the best route to take is the one that's free. The second best route to take if number 1 isn't an option, is go with something you can return within 30 days. Take if for a test drive and make sure it's what you want. If it isn't, then go back to what you had and you're not out any money. Let's say the rental fees from Xfinity are $200 a year. If your house was full of kids and the WiFi connection was unreliable and slow, causing no one to have any good service, would you pay me $200 if I said I would eliminate everyone's complaints and give you reliable service. I know I'd pay it. Call is a subscription service instead of a rental agreement. People have subscription services stacked up and don't even track that most of the time. They just want their "thing". In this case, good internet is my "thing" and it's the last "thing" I would want to do without. I'm rambling now. Those are my thoughts. Great question, thank you for the comment. -Tom

I just tried two mesh systems and both either had hidden fees or corky software that just don’t work properly. I’d swear, I should start a channel on how to make the products better as I dig deep. Hi Tom. I am new to these pods. So, here are my questions. Does Comcast charge for these pods? Do I have to have Comcast’s gateway to work with these pods, or if I have a third party modem and router, will the pods work? Thanks.
Hey Navin. Yes, there is a one time purchase price of the pods. There is no monthly charge after that. Yes, you have to have Comcast's gateway to work with these. A third party modem and router will not work with these. BUT, if you do have a third party router or modem, you can find these exact same pods under the marketing name Plume. Plume pods work with any router. Not sure how well or if the performance compares to the Comcast setup. Hope this helps. -Tom

What can these been used for?
For devices with Ethernet but no wifi or in cases where you have to use hard wired connection, like some companies require when remotely working
Have you tried the RJ-45 ports on the bottom of the xFi Pod to a PC's RJ-45 connection? On first testing, the RJ-45's appear good, but there is a lot of disconnect and speeds that are well below the WiFi connection -- intermitted connections to the internet at best. That is, the Windows machine will report a good connection, but the internet will remain unreachable. Thanks for the video.
Have you tried using the ethernet port on the pods for a hardwired connection? Curious what your experience is with that.

Just upgraded to 2nd gens. I went from 20 - 60 mbps, (120 on good days) to over 300 mbps average, got a 400 mbps once. I have 1gb service.
After a month plus, I am still very happy. I get 300 to 350 normally and peaks of low 400s. Definitely worth the upgrade.
Update: After some problems with my XB7, I received an updated XB7. I am now getting an average of 546mbps, with a highest speed of 655.55mbps!! WOW!
Is the 259 mbps test with an Ethernet connection or wireless?

John, Yes it works if you mix them. I tried that here in Florida and it worked just fine. I set up the 2nd gen pod first then went to the app and added more pods. No issues at all. Hope this helps. -Tom
Would like to see a packet loss test via Ethernet.
How about if you have the Gigabit package? It says they don't go above 500 mbps over Wi-Fi.
What do you really need 500mps on wifi for? If you really need it, which I'm sure you don't, pony up for commercial grade, hardwired, Wifi 6 capable access points and upgrade all your laptops and phones to be able to get 1 gig wifi speeds.
It's an awful lot of money to satisfy a sense of accomplishment with zero benefit.

I am assuming you still use the same network ID and password with the Xfi pod and no need to create a separate network ID and password. Am I right?
You are correct, K N. It is seamless. Your router and pods will work dynamically and you should never know which one you are connected to. The magic will all happen in the background.
Question: can the 1st gen also work with the 2nd gen and if it can whats the results?
I think they can work together. When doing some research on Xfinity's site I did read where they mentioned you could used the smaller ones to augment the new bigger one. I haven't done it but that's a great suggestion. The smaller pods would still cap out at 200 Megabits for an output though. -Tom

Are they waterproof? How many feet away? Do they work you you know there’s a whole bunch of questions I want to use these to put Internet in my barn.
They are NOT waterproof and have no outside rating to them. They sort of daisy chain themselves and work together. Not sure of the range of each.
Nobody can explain what the 2 ethernet plugs are for???
Hooking them with a Ethernet cable directly to my computer should give me even better speed, or does it really matter?
It doesn't matter. If I can go Microsoft team meetings on LTE with no issues, why am I worried about getting gigabit ethernet when I can pull down 300-500mbit on wifi??

You can run your CAT5, etc. cable directly to it from your router, then send out a stronger signal from there.
I had three first gen pods... They SUCKED. Went out and bought a two pack of these to replace them after your review. Completely different! These worked great. My service is 400 Mbps. I was getting on average in my office of 20 Mbps with the old pods. The old pods would randomly stop working and they ran HOT. My house is a South Florida hurricane construction home. Outside block walls have rebar and poured concrete in them. The second floor is poured concrete on a metal pan. The internal walls all have metal studs. The home is 2,800 sq ft, but I went with two pods anyway because of the building material issues. The gateway is upstairs, my office is on the opposite end of the house down stairs. I am now getting between 170 and 200 Mbps in my office. I get right at 400 Mbps at the gateway. I'm very happy with these.
That great to hear about the 2nd Gen pods, Mike. Good info because we moved to southwest Florida since I made this video. The block walls and metal studs make it a whole new game compared to midwest construction. Happy to say the Gen 2 pod is working great for me down here as well. -Tom
How can I tell if mine are Gen-1 or Gen-2?
@@markmanea302 GEN-1 has one ethernet port and GEN-2 has 2 ethernet ports which can be used as ethernet plug in (if needed) for desktop/TV etc.
I live in Canada we just ordered bell wifi pods same concept we have the 1.5gbps network speed I have the same situation where our basement living room entertainment system is it's spotty where we get about 60 down 200 up on ethernet it also has the 2 ethernet ports I would probably ethernet my PC if I were to would I get better than my current wifi extender I get 80 down and 80 for up on wired as well our upstairs is spotty too
BTBF68, I just moved to Florida and am still using the 2nd Gen Pod because of the cement block walls used in construction here. It's working great. I hope it gives you the solution you need as well. -Tom
The pods are exquisite, especially when paired with Plume HomePass. I’m getting gigabit speeds all day long.
other end of the house doesnt tell us distance..how many walls or the construction of the walls. I have solid brick walls in my home...

The only way to traverse the house is to use the hallways. Repeaters or pods will have to shoot wifi through the wooden doors from the hallway. If not you'd have to drop wires from the ceiling or basement or external wire runs or if there is cable, run MoCA adapters or powerline adapters on the electricity and install wireless access points where you need them.

Hello, I got the new pods and I have had them go offline two times in the past two weeks. I have only had them two weeks. The first time, I noticed it flashing at night and then it was fine. Today, I went online to the app and retested connection and they are on again. Any idea why this might be happening. Again, I have only had them just about 2 weeks. The speed is so much better with these, but I don’t want to constantly reset. Any idea what is going on? Any thoughts.
Renee, so you have the new single pod, gen 2. That's what I'm getting. I've never had to reset my pod, or even the first generation pods. I would return it for a replacement. I think you have 30 days with Xfinity. I'd do that so you aren't stuck with a bad pod forever. Let me know if you are past the return period. I can tell you how I used to automatically reset an old router I had once a day. -Tom

It does that , so don’t worry about that, as for the disconnection you have to re try the connection when it says their offline wait the 2 mins
Extreme package gives you 600Mbps, 300mbps is blast pro+ , I worked at Xfinity so please check with tech support team

I’m afraid I’m a bit spoiled. My subscription promises 1200Mbps but I could only muster 700Mbps per device on a good day, at basically point blank range from my gateway.
Yeah, I know, those are decent numbers especially when they hold steady - but currently, as-is, (without pods), those speeds tend to bog down to the low 100’s Mbps, even lower in the pathetic 40’s to 20’s. This is unacceptable!
Now, I’d like to know from anyone in here if the Gen 2 pod(s) will help me see at least 700Mbps or better speeds?
Just what is the max possible speed on the Gen 2’s and is it anywhere near my expected 1200Mbps without going hardwired?

Just so everyone knows , if you have complete package thru Comcast you can get up to 3 free pods .
I tried and they didn't let me, its was very difficult. I called they basically said I have to buy it. I have 1K mbps.
Cox wants $129 per pod! By the time you get a 2 or 3, you could've easily purchased at least a mid-range mesh system that you own and not depend on a rental router.

Depending on which package of internet you have , you can get these pods for free.
Bro Spectrum literally did copy my homework and didn’t take the effort to make it look different.
