+WALKER MACMILLAN I guess. Ive been an AAL fan since Tosin was tracking the first album. Seeing as how its all art, id say that Garska and Baca create art that is equal in weight and depth, but that appeals to people in different ways. There is no competition between them, thats for sure. This most recent contortionist album is as much a work of art as the newest AAL.
The fact that those 4 hi-hat hits set up pretty much everything that is going to happen for the next two minutes and the listener doesn't even realize until almost a full minute later is amazing. Really good drum writing.
Man, why on earth isn't there more of his content available!? Top 5 favorite drummers period...and I've seen a looooot of em. His groove ability coupled with his accents give me goosebumps to this day.
I can’t get enough Contortionist in my life. Every single musician in that band is remarkable. Can’t wait to see y’all In Minneapolis with Animals as leaders. Thank you guys for what you do . Cheers
This is why I love drum videos. Sometimes the music blends together so well that when you listen to a studio recording you aren't able to fully appreciate the effort of each instrument because you can't hear or comprehend everything that's happening (at least sometimes I can't) until you see the live performance.....Great skill and timing, and I LOVE the ghost notes on the snare....
You know what? This drumming/recording is on a whole Nother mother loving level. It’s high quality video shot from a good angle, with great mic’ing and mixing. The playing goes without need for description.
This is 6 years later but alot of drummers (cough Jay Postones) actually play shit more complicated live. I can struggle play through Noctourne but I can't even play their live version of it close to perfect lol
His playstyle and fills remind me of myself playing the drums some years ago. Sadly i have no room to practise in at the moment. Love the atmosphere of this song(s).
16 HHX ozone, 8 AA china splash on top, 14 HH medium hats, 18 legacy crash (?), the stack im pretty sure consists of a aax 12 max splash (whatever the ones that are based off ozones are called) with a 14 aax china natural, 22 aax omni, and im assuming either another legacy crash/artisan. i have no idea what the china is.
It's funny, I kinda view it as meinl being the Sabian of European style cymbals. More innovative with their sounds, better with artist relations, but meinl cymbals tend to be European style, kinda thicker, and they tend toward automated manufacture. And if that's the case, then paiste is the European Zildjian. Worse artist relations, and for no discernible reason, unwilling to experiment or facilitate custom sounds for artists. At least thats what I've been told. Zildjian is stubborn and they can afford to be because they're Zildjian. If I had to choose, I like Turkish sounding cymbals better than European. And Sabian seems like the best prog sound to me. Win!
Meinl just tried to get their name out their, and somehow seemed to find a lot of their products getting used by various groups in popular sub genres of metal, not sure how. Meinl generally is just way more expensive than it needs to be so I don't see how it's so popular. But I guess a brand name can take you far. I think their strongest shit is honestly their budget stuff. The Classics lines are probably the best price-point cymbals I have ever heard.
Gavin Oswald Yeah I really dig them. I got a Sabian AA Metal-X 19" for under $200 new but I guess that was because by then they'd phased it out for the AAX Metal crash or whatever it is now.
That snare is haunted from the amount of ghost notes!
Lol
Would give you props for that one but I've seen that comment on a tesseract drum cam video haha
Brendon stacey
whaat? NOOO, I have failed at life :(
+Charlie's Drum Corner I would count it.. your original comment was from 2 years ago. It could still be valid.
One can hope!
This literally defines every aspect of great drummer and his role. Outstanding.
I'm so glad this is a band.

That cymbal fill at 4:15 made me pregnant.
Fil K It’s so simple, but it gives me an orgasm everytime
6:14
drunk bar dude- "why do you need so many cymbals. I BET YOU DON'T EVEN USE THEM ALL!"
joey- "hold my beer"
you both meant 7:02
Still can’t get over that either
This is 9:44 of the most pure drum art i've ever seen. Almost a year later I still have this album on repeat.
Then you must have never heart of Matt garstka.... That's a shame
+WALKER MACMILLAN heard*
+WALKER MACMILLAN Or perhaps he just prefers this guy over Garstka?

+BassHeadJazz Well said. Every musician has got something to bring to the table.
Joey was in the zone this night...one of his best performances ever
7:24 Slow motion Lessard
Dude writes some of the coolest drum parts in metal these days.
I’m so proud of this crowd for keeping such good time, probably comes with being a Contortionist fan in general
Joey Baca for president. Guy is clean
4:11 gets me everytime. such a good fill

@@themonarchdrums Yes yes YES!
@@themonarchdrums the reoccurring grooves and pieces that just transition seamlessly are amazing. Great songwriting
I think Joey Baca and Blake Richardson need to hang out sometime
I mean, they have toured together XD
His snare always sounds good.
That groove at 3:08 is the stuff of dreams
Yeah it’s great. The feel?? Those cymbals and drums also both sound amazing.

@2:32 gives me chills every time.
He has some serious taste in that brain. Beautiful performance
This video is so helpful to learn the song
Who says machines can't feel? This guy is proof of concept.
Ben Duncan so does that mean the machine is self aware? lol
the drumming singularity is here
@@burnthedead13 the AI has grown past our need to teach. It is now teaching us...
Ray Hearne (Haken) and Joey Baca are so underrated... they fucking rock! This drummer simply knows how to play his instrument!
6:10-6:33 is one of the tightest combinations of groove + fills that I've ever heard. Fucking hell
I can’t get enough Contortionist in my life. Every single musician in that band is remarkable. Can’t wait to see y’all In Minneapolis with Animals as leaders. Thank you guys for what you do .

Drumeo needs to have this dude on for a live performance, interview and lessons. A master of the kit.
Just like the conductor, his right hand keeps the beat for the band. Everything else swirls around it in poly rhythms.

This guy just rips! I also really love those screams mike has thrown into the second part of language. So raw.
GOD I love this band.
Blast from the past, hope you boys are doing well. Good times at Nans!

This little part, that should be "unoticed" is not, it makes me chill everytime... creativity with simplicity !! 05:52
2:32 is my favourite fill. It's not big or flashy, but it's tight as shit. Fuckin love it.
Yeah, love that off timing technique. Guy's incredible.
i always clap that snare part when i listen to this song 😂
Baca just goes above and beyond! Just so much technicality and creativity. Just blows my mind how great this man is. So much respect!
Mike dances around like such a creep lol I love it, serious Maynard vibes
DEM DYNAMICS DOE
cymbal work 3:25 - 6:00 kills me every time, some of it's not insanely hard to play but it's some creative song writing
CareyPortnoyBeauford that is usually the best stuff.
He is just so clean about it too!
Polyrhythms are a beautiful thing
3:06 majestic as fuck
Such brilliant engineers of sound...
The fill at 7:04 is so simple but gets me every time :D
6:58-7:25 is one of the best drum parts I've ever heard
that fill at 7:00 is sick!
The placement of that is SO sick
what the fuck.
the precision is unreal
this guy's evolution from Intrinsic to Language is awesome. he really put the work in and reached a new level of drumming.
that set list drop at 8:47 doe
+Josh Rosenberg nice observation
it was even in time
even the venue knew no other band needed to play that night!
Awesome video here! Looking forward to more great drum cams!
This video is so charming

No wonder I can't play it
Ahmed Walid Alian lol don't take my opinion so personal, holy shit haha

Awesome video!!!
So rad dude !!!!!!!
such a good drummer
This guys whole set up sounds beautiful
This is so sick!!
Entire song is a masterpiece in writing and execution but the fill at 4:13 on the hats is pure beautiful bliss 😢
Also 7:03-7:09 is soooo tight too
the dudes from Arch echo just chillin' in the back
I love the sound of that snare! So deep, loud and fat! And of course excellent drumming by Joey.
Damn, Omni being used as a metal ride? Sounds pretty sharp too.
Man, he is so f*cking tight it's inhumane.... Wow
inhuman*
joeys ghosting is insane. this guy HAS A GROOVE that's for damn sure!
His playstyle and fills remind me of myself playing the drums some years ago. Sadly i have no room to practise in at the moment. Love the atmosphere of this song(s).

The ghost notes are insane
This guy has perfect meter
doest their singer kinda scare the shit out of anyone else or...?
Mike loses his shit on stage, he just gets really into it man. He was the same with LCTR, it's kinda his thing.
Yep me too is stage performance his just.....unnerving.
I love it!
Have none of you guys ever seen like, any other band ever? How is he "going off"?

I wish I had that Omni .
Fuck he's good!!!
7:43 damn fry scream
Joey is the CEO of cymbal fills
The fill around 2:30 is fuckin amazing
anyone knows what cymbal setup he is using here? i know he is meinl endores, but to me it looks like he is using sabian HHX...

I have no issue with that in fact manny of my favorite drummers use Mienl.

the meinl classics custom dark line is insanely good for the price. The best sounding crash ive heard for under $200 new.

Not to take away from drum cam, but the bass player rocks!
couldn't anyone to play the vibraslap live? laaaaame
gooby!
