  • Hi there, I'm Eileen. I worked super hard for years with the aim to retire early. In the last year, I took the plunge to go on a year-long career break. The sabbatical gave me the opportunity to dive into being a content creator being the security of a day job. At first, it was refreshing to be my own boss, to have full control of my schedule, and to not be tied down by the 9-to-5 structure. While I'm so grateful for being able to generate a small income from this side endeavour, being a content creator is not all rainbow and sunshine. In this video, I talked about the pros and cons of owning a small business vs having a stable day job xx

it can be fun to have youtubers talk about different topics especially if they start branching out from a more "fun" topic like fashion to something deeper like discussions on minimalism, consumerism, etc. but if a youtuber has a pet topic that I'm not interested in I probably will skip that video OR just skip that portion of the video, if possible. it is actually refreshing when youtubers are financially independent and not reliant on their channel to make a living. it does feel like the content is more genuine.

Some people find purpose in working and accomplishing. Then there's me who find purpose in motherhood, wife, and doing what I love during my spare time. Nothing is perfect. You find what works for you!

It is a very hard choice to leave a job for your own "gig". I took two breaks from full time work, the first time I went back because I wanted to/needed to, the second time because I was given an offer that was too good to resist. Even then I wasn't sure I wanted to go back, but I was glad I did because it gave me some great opportunities. After doing that for 13 years, I was able to quit again and that time it was for good. I think it's something you have to approach with an open mind, expect things not to go as planned and it's perfectly okay if circumstances change or you change your mind to go back.

I always appreciate your honesty and insight. I graduated with a degree in business and I had a 15 year career as an advertising executive in the newspaper business. I really enjoyed my job, but I got to the point where I felt I completed this journey. So, I decided to go back to college and get a post baccalaureate in education. I taught 4th grade for 20 years and I absolutely loved it. I learned so much and it was so rewarding to make a difference in the lives of children. I am now retired and I miss being with people. I signed up to be a substitute teacher, so I do get some opportunity to be with my team and to be with children again. I loved having structure and it was always helpful that I had a steady paycheck and insurance. I admire the influencers who continue each week producing content, but I can't imagine one doing this for 20 to 30 years.

Great point about there being no perfect job.
Even if you think your role can’t be any better, you never know if your amazing coworker will get sick or have to leave, and be replaced with an awful person you have to deal with everyday. Also, your boss who may be a great mentor may have to deal with some personal issues and be replaced with a tyrant. Acquisitions are common and may cause a lot of inner conflict that wasn’t there before. All of this is out of your control.
