    • @Tremulousnut

      @@jryker28 It was a clusterfuck of stubbornness and bad management. The company thought they could strong-arm the military into buying them with the media by playing the victim, which didn't work.
      It didn't get picked because the tech was immature, unreliable against AP, and there were glue and ceramic quality control issues. Dragonskin relied on a pliable glue that hardens when left alone, and flexes when manipulated. Besides the infamous temperature issue, people found out you can push aside the disks in a given area by manipulating individual disks.
      Then it failed a second time because the owner didn't want to sell it to anyone who couldn't purchase in bulk, and also started fights on forums, writing cheques he couldn't cash in military communities, which is why people lost sympathy in him.
      Then it failed a third time because there's simply no interest in the product anymore, even after it was made available to civilians. All the people who said they would buy it simply didn't. Now Dragonskin is dead and its derivatives are just as obscure. FRAS isn't new, there another flexible system called "Hexar" made by Stealth Armor Systems, which is EXTREMELY similar, created by the inventor of Dragonskin after he split from Pinnacle (the original company that produced Dragonskin).

      Yeah it was the high heat caused the glue to fail and the scales to fall to the bottom.

      They fail testing at angles, which is where body armor is supposed to perform the best because it provides more ballistic material than when shot perpendicular. Also, their products are made in China, but priced way above US-made products...all while not even being certified, so they don't have to pass RIT which is where plates randomly have to pass inspection in order to remain on the NIJ list.

    I went from plate because it was tearing up all my back injuries. I went to a composite that is lighter. But, walking around with a high cut helmet with external tacos may not work in the general environment. Granted it is .308 rated, it might not work well in a civilian situation where you’re not going to go full on war with a .308 SAS. So, I appreciate the review. It works well for a Grey Man environment. The kind of day where you throw your Mark 18 law folder in your back with extra magazines and a cover shirt for a pistol with extra mags and a good blade.

      Soft armor that can stop rifle rounds of any kind??? Bwahahahaha! 😆 Try again numnuts..................what this company offers (for the low, low price of $1,600+ usd) is a semi pliable and yet, still bulky (and heavy by some people's standards) armor that stops 223/5.56 and 7.62x39 threats. That is a FAR CRY from "rifle rounds of any kind". Use your fucking eyeballs and look at the monumental jump in price from an already expensive lineup. This armor is marginally better in some areas but worse in others than what's currently on the market. You can buy two III+ or level 4 plates (which offer more protection) for around 200 bucks from most companies (sometimes including the plate carrier and trauma pads). Add in side plates (if that's something you want) and what you have is a slightly bulkier and slightly heavier package at a FRACTION of the cost.

The only thing stopping me is that super Sonic 300blk has a hard time penetrating 3a soft armor and level 3 hard, but it seems like 5.56 even out of very short barrels will still penetrate. As a "life and liberty" build the preformance of 300blk is concerning. Since you're one of the biggest advocates of 300blk could you do a real test? @** at the cost of weight, bft mitigation, spall mitigation, the potential that your 10% deviation in hardness could result in a plate that is AR450 instead of 500, the fact that your steel plate needs an extra pound and 1/4" of truck bed liner to mitigate spall (which may or may not work), an extra quarter to half pound and another 1/4" trauma pad to soften the blow if you get hit, the potential that your level 3 plate will be defeated by a 55gr fmj 5.56 going at around 3100 fps or more with a 20" barrel.
      But I guess stopping 308 is a plus it has

      If it's bad you could wear a trauma pad or some padding underneath. There are products made to be worn underneath soft armor for this purpose. There are some really cool flexible foams that do a great job of absorbing a blow, but I wouldn't usually want to wear a vest of foam since it's very insulating and not breathable. Might be fine in cold weather. But you'd wear what you have to if it keeps you alive. If you collapse from blunt force trauma when a vest catches a bullet it's not functional and you need to use something to prevent that and keep you in the fight.

    Why are vests always so short (like cut-off belly shirts) though?
    Seriously. I'm asking. I honestly don't understand. And I've never just asked anyone before. Haha.
    So yeah. Why are they not formed more like (or atleast closer to) say a jet-ski life vest.... Which covers more of your torso, yet still doesn't really inhibit most movement or range of motion?
    Could anyone please just help explain this, or try to provide some sort of a simple understanding, just about how or why most vests are so "skimpy" or minimal, so to speak? Thanks. 🙂👍🏻

    • @phillip0537
      @phillip0537 3 года назад

      The armor ends at one of the main hinge points in your torso. You can't have rigid, or even semi-rigid, armor that goes below about your belly-button line without seriously impacting your ability to move. If you look at ancient and medieval rigid breastplates, they also end at the same place and usually have some kind of flexible armor skirt or semi-rigid armor that flares out (called a fauld) to protect the lower abdomen area. Even if it could be made bullet resistant, something like that would not be concealable and almost certainly impractical in a modern combat environment.
