    Totally agree! Amazing video, as always, Jon! Dear students, birds are definitely not the best for students. Parrots are best for people who have life all figured out, where they are going to live, and also who have their career and financial income all figured out because these pets are NOT cheap! If I got a parrot back when I really wanted in my early twenties, it definitely would have done poorly and eventually rehomed. 15 yrs later, I've built my businesses and even relocated to another country, and thanks to that, I now have the time, money, and stability to own a CAG parrot and give it all the love and stuff it needs to be spoiled and happy. Building my first house currently with a 3 storey aviary right in the middle of the home just for the bird! Listen to Jon, guys. He knows what he's talking about!
    PS - Oh yeah, and can we talk about the mess they make? 5 yrs old mess that live for decades. Even human kids grow up eventually and learn to be neater, and kids don't cover your furniture in dust nor tear it up at every given chance! Leather and wood furniture owners, you've been warned! 🤣

    When I was 11 I wanted a bird so bad , so my parents bought me a cockatiel (also thinking it's a good starter bird) now I'm 25 and he's still with me. Also a rescue African grey joined the family.
    *Funny thing is the cockatiel (a male) makes more noise then the African grey (a female)

    I wish I had better words, but I don’t. This man is right...
    My daughter had a sun conure....cute, colorful.....LOUD, louder than my macaw now full-time...sadly it went back to the pet store.
    My macaw is looooooud but just twice a day or so. That’s the usual behavior, he’s a rescue and I’m a stay home dad but he literately needs people 24/7. They build up a trust that cannot be under estimated. They love, we get annoyed and pass them on. Then they hurt, and never forget.
    Good luck

    I have two budgies- the supposed “starter birds”. They aren’t. They aren’t too loud sure, and they’re not as prone to plucking as other parrots, but they still need a good diet, lots of space, and they aren’t easy to tame. They’re very skittish by nature so it takes a lot of time and effort. Like, a lot. They also make lots of noise and make a huge mess for such little birds! Also, people with allergies shouldn’t get birds. They produce dust that can really aggravate them. There are some birds that aren’t as dusty but that is something to keep in mind.

    • @millenial90
      @millenial90 5 лет назад

      Birds can aggravate allergies for many people, it's true, but being allergic to mammals doesn't necessarily mean being allergic to birds, even dusty ones, although I'd never recommend a powdery bird to someone with allergies or asthma. I adopted my parrotlet in part because I'm severely allergic to furry animals, but she doesn't cause any reaction. That being said, allergies are not something to mess with, and people need to know what they're getting into in general. I think anyone even thinking about getting a bird should try volunteering in a local bird rescue (if there's one in their area) or ask to visit a breeder, (more likely in a lot of areas). The benefit of this, especially if spending time at a rescue is that it can not only show if you're likely to have a reaction, but it also gives an idea of how loud, messy, and destructive parrots can be, so people will be better informed. Also, volunteering helps shelters that are already stretched so thin.
      But I'm really not arguing that people with allergies should get birds. What I'm really trying to convince people to do is help a local shelter if they have one. :p

    My name is Stephen and I live in SC. I am 10 years old. There is a pet store in my town that we visit a lot. There is an African Grey named Charlie there that I think would make a great friend for your Smokey. We were warned that he bites when we first started visiting him and he would screech when I got near his cage... but now when we go see him, he seems to remember us, whistles instead of screeching, and even bows his head for us to pet him through the bars of his cage. I really would love to know that he has a good home! He is at Pet Lovers in Florence SC.

    I have a female Congo African Grey (DNA tested). African greys are usually described as relatively quiet birds or at least somewhere in the middle. I have to tell you when she wants to make noise, she definitely knows how. The worst I've got was ear piercing. Below the pain threshold, but above the threshold of the sound being distorted in your ears. That should put it around 100 - 105db. Think about that for a second. A jet aircraft at takeoff would produce a noise level of 118db or more. Of course, that is rare and usually due to something that pissed her off for some reason, but this is the kind of noise you might and most likely hear at least on some occasions. A very common or even the most common reason for a parrot screaming is when they want something they are not getting or when they become frustrated. As human relations take time to develop and understand your partner's needs the same thing applies to the relationship with your pet bird with the added difficulty that they do not speak our language so they cannot tell you explicitly what they want or what upsets them (unless specifically trained for specific things). This relation takes a lot of time to build. My Grey for example - when she is vocally active (talking, mumbling, making cheerful sounds) - she really doesn't like anything to be louder than her. If you turn on a mixer, vacuum cleaner or something similar she will start screaming just for the sake of being louder than that appliance and often it is not even enough to turn off the appliance for her to become quiet again. What I am trying to say is - it is not even a matter of just time, priorities or moving to a different place. Just as you adjust to a girlfriend or boyfriend, you will have to adjust to your bird and you must respect that. The bird didn't beg to be born in captivity nor it begged to be dragged into your house. It is your, mine and everybody's responsibility to provide them with the best life possible and that also includes understanding their personal needs, which can drastically differ from a bird to bird.

    We have two suns and they are noisy. They have their "screeching periods" where they just scream and scream. But we taught them if they want to hang out, they have to be quiet (or more like squawk and beep). Fortunately we have them in the farthest part of the flat, so they don't annoy neighbours, but in a regular flat it might be a problem. It's not that much, they are noisy like 15 minutes a day in total. Sometimes they are worse days, screaming for longer periods, usually when we didnt let them have enough of sleep. The girl is really quiet on her own, the male had made it screamier, but we are slowly decreasing the noise amount. They can be taught, fortunately :)
    Otherwise they are sweet as hell and we love them

    Thank you for making this video. It made me really upset at first since I am 13, and Ive been dying to get a bird for so long, but now im glad that I didn't get a bird and not being able to give it the love it needs. My friend has a bird, and I feel so bad for it, because it doesn't seem to get the love it deserves. I will research as much as I can until I am old enough and stable enough to get a bird of my own.

  • @lagestita
    @lagestita 5 лет назад +11

    I have a GCC and he's noisy but not too loud. That is also because he's out of his cage 90% of the time he's awake. If I left him in the cage a lot, it would be a different matter altogether. I don't even want to imagine what it would be like. I free-flight trained him so I take him with me everywhere in one of those "Pack O Birds" back packs and always end up going to places which are suitable for my bird to fly. I take him EVERYWHERE with me. I try to get jobs where I can take him with me (even if the money is shit). I'm 40 years old, I never go to parties anymore unless it's the kind of party where I can take him. If you are 15 or 16 your really social years are yet to come and you'd want to be as free as possible to go travelling with your friends, working in something you really like or just hanging out with people. Having one of these birds is great but it means your life is going to work around it, if you don't want the bird to become a nuisance, a really annoying creature to live with. When you are 14 it's difficult to imagine what your life will be like in just 6 years time because 6 years sound like a lot. I would recommend keeping long term responsibilities to a minimum until you get a bit older and see where your life is heading to.

    I currently have 6 Budgies and a Green Cheeked Conure however...my neighbor is moving and told me he’s probably going to give me is bird, her cage etc. She’s a Grey. I think I’m crazy even considering this. My Conure is pretty quiet unless he wants something. He’s a great alarm if someone comes on the property. He screams a warning sound if he sees a hawk outside. ALL of my birds get really loud if they hear and see me on the phone. Just like children.

    hey, i,m 15 and I have a 9-year-old umbrella cockatoo, two cockatiels, and a male Eclectus. what your saying is completely true and its a lot harder keeping larger parrots (especially the cockatoo! don't get one!). I find myself not going to stuff other kids do because of my birds, they are really just like kids. my birds have huge cages (macaw cages) and are out of there cage for most of the day with my mom on their stands. but they still need attention from their "mate". especially the cockatoo since she is a rehome (the eclectus too but not a plucker) and she developed a plucking habit with the other home. I do think my birds are thriving but I sacrifice a lot for them and its not worth it for the vast majority of kids (teens and college students included). parrots are EXPENSIVE, DESTRUCTIVE. and so freakin LOUD.

    Thank you for sharing great videos. Smokey is so cute! I was thinking about getting a mate for my Timneh African Grey. He is about 8 years old. I got him from a family member about 6 years ago who could not look after him any longer. I'm not sure if I should as I plan to move to another country and I don't know if I can take him with or if I should as I might not be able to provide the correct environment/time, love and attentions he needs. I thought maybe a mate would help him loose interest in me and my partner and he would bond with the mate so if and when we leave he will be okay with that. But I worry about if that person I give my parrot to splits them up that could be devastating for him and the mate. I would love to hear your opinion on this or around this topic.

She is still interactive but a little stand offish.Fortunately I also have 7 budgies, and they all fly around in the room that is their aviary. Pepper clearly likes to go hang around their cage. She bullies them a little sometimes but no attacks. And she just likes to be around them and their activity.

    Hey man it'd be great if you could share a bit of advice with me here -
    So, we have a budgie around 30+ days old, hand-fed almost through the whole time, we still feed him formula from syringe.
    he/she started flying in the past 4-7 days, and we work with him in feeding times to fly over to the hand and perch.
    I think that our interactions are pretty good but sometimes he just fly off and get stuck and walls and such and I'm afraid he might fly off from an open window - when and how will it be okay to trust him not to just get lost?
    thanks!

    I am 16 and I totally agree with you! 100%! I have a female Eclectus and a Blue and Gold macaw. There are many reasons I know I am a good owner. I have given up so much of my life for my birds (and horses, but were talking about birds here lol), I school from home so I have my birds with me literally all day every day, my family have all had lots of experience with birds and we are financially stable enough to care for them, although they do not break the bank to feed or groom etc, there initial costs and costs for things if they break can be $$$ and any vet bills are also $$$. A lot of my friends meet my birds then instantly want one of their own and I then remind them all about time, noise, destruction, space and financial ability and then they realise that birds are not animals for everyone, my birds are honestly more work than my horses (and my horses are a lot of damn work lol)! So please if you are unsure as to weather you would be a good bird owner or not and are still in school DO NOT DO IT! They are so much hard work and can make your life hell if you are not prepared! Please know what you are getting yourself in to before you get yourself into a situation that can damage not only the bird but but I have seen families torn apart by birds! So please unless you are 100% sure you can care for a bird... Don't get one!

    I've been looking at birds for some time now, maybe close to a year. I am still at school and I read and told myself that I would wait until I have a stable job and a house.
    I will be working long hours and irregular hours. I have spoken to other bird owners in similar situations that have healthy and happy birds.
    I live in Canada so there's not a lot of breeders nor species available. I found an Eclectus breeder close to me and she told me that Eclectus parrots are quite independant, should I say more independant than other parrots, and she suggested this species to other owners who work a lot, with good success.
    She did tell me that there's no such thing as beginner birds because owners who start with small birds only to buy the Macaw they really want, well the owner ends up with multiple birds. I still have a couple years to think about it but the more I research, the more convinced I am.

    I love your attitude and your total commitment to your Grey. As the Mom of a rehomed Grey, my understanding is that the needs of Birds are not properly met in private ownership and I would like to see the day when it's made illegal. I don't mean any disrespect and I appreciate that many owners are devoted to their birds. It's never going to be enough as they would be much happier had they grown up being wild.

      I totally agree. They are meant to fly free. But it is as it is and all we can do is offer the best we can as a poor substitute. I have a green cheek and a Corella who is neurotic and nervous from being mishandled by his last owner. At the very least, I'd like to see a system where potential parrot owners are required to get a license that involves basic training in care and management. Too many of these beautiful animals needlessly suffer because people buy them without really understanding what's involved. When I get asked what parrot I recommend, I usually say a kitten.

    • @millenial90
      @millenial90 5 лет назад +2

      I do agree with you for the most part, I don't think most people are suitable and that birds should be left alone, if they have an unspoiled habitat where we aren't threatening them. I don't think it should be illegal, but there should probably be laws treating parrots as exotic species which require a permit process and registration with a veterinary clinic. That would keep a lot of irresponsible/lazy/impulse owners from keeping them. I also think that pet stores should have to be licensed to care for and sell birds, and should require an application process. But unfortunately we are destroying the habitat of so many species that many parrot species will go extinct without a strong captive breeding population, and zoos and professionally run programs would be better, but have their own issues. My bigger hope is that humans will tackle our environmental problems and restore and protect critical habitat, first. we get so upset about animals causing property damage or damaging our crops, and yet we slash and burn so much of what we touch. We're learning so much more about animal (including avian) intelligence that I don't believe that humans destroying even one more acre of wild land is acceptable... We deprive so many thinking, emotional beings of their homes and lives. 😔

    Have two parrots!! African Grey 15 years old and a conure (gcc)5 years old. All I can say is they always have to have attention, and they don't do well sitting in a cage!

    Hey I just got onto your channel and I love your approach to birds. Just a quick question. I have a beautiful little cockatiel who's about 6 months old. He is mostly quiet if I'm not home but if he knows I'm home and I'm not in the room with him he will scream really loudly! I try to ignore it and not give him attention until he stops but he's so persistent and will only stop if he can see me again which is sweet but damn it's loud! Do you have any tips?

    Hi I have a question. I brought a baby quaker, what concerns me is that she used to step up but now it's if she is scared of my hand and climbs up the cage. I let her out everyday but I have to grab her as she won't step up.What can you recommend?

    We (royal we- my husband lol) put our CAG in a different room in a sleep cage at night because it is dark and safer for him since we have other pets. Rarely does he ever poop in that cage even after sun comes up and he has been awake. Is that common? Funny thing about noise too...I set the smoke alarm in our kitchen off a time or two. He isn't in that area but near enough to hear the alarm. Now whenever I cook (which is almost daily) at some point he makes the alarm sound. I think it is louder than the alarm. Plus after he does it he laughs. He is making a joke about my cooking. Little dickens!! One last thing,Zuri will not eat raw carrots. He will only eat raw fruit. But veggies that are raw he will just leave in his bowl and eat around them. Always been that since he was weaned and went to fresh foods.

    • @BlackCawthorne
      @BlackCawthorne 5 лет назад +1

      One tip I saw regarding raw carrots is to disguise it as a toy - if you take a potato peeler and start peeling it, but don't go all the way (so the bit you're peeling is still stuck at one end) it kinda turns into a toy when you're done. Then you can just hang it in the cage somewhere. It might not work, but maybe it's worth a try?

    • @starlakelsey2782

      great idea @@BlackCawthorne !! I have a kabob skewer that I put fruit on...I have tried carrot on it but maybe if it looks more fun...worth a try. He eats raw greenbeans and other stuff that is raw. But carrots he hasn't touched. I probably could have kept trying but we eat carrots and he eats cooked carrots so we quit sharing LOL

    Hi, i am gathering information on bird pets and hope to have one in the future to train and have freely in the house(really part of the family). I think that getting one while he/she is a baby can be best.
    My partner on the other hand can't handle loud screaming sounds of parrots but loves the idea of training a parrot and having him free in the house. He never had a pet parrot, only dogs and cats. I know that these animals are very different, but he cares for his animals very well, put a lot of time in playing, grooming and treating them. He can't stand dogs that bark, and thus taught his dog not to bark..can we teach a parrot not to scream?
    We are both scared that their may also be jealousy the day that we get kids.
    I do not want to rush this, and are still looking things up.
    Is there maybe any advice on what type of parrot can be best for this and how to prevent jealousy or handle jealousy and is it possible to teach a parrot not to scream?

    I got my first bird after college, after resigning on my first job. I said to my self "this is it, I will buy the bird I want since I have my own money." Sun Conure is my first choice since they are sweet and Medium-sized, but it turns out I picked a parakeet. I don't know why, but deep in my heart I have to start with a small, and not that demanding bird. 2 years later, I am still with my parakeet, and still my only bird. I bought a 1 year old parakeet, and I got to tame it even it is for a long time. She is always with me whatever I do. I got some ups and downs with her in the past 2 years, but we are still friends, her personality is one of a kind, the bond is real. I think, whatever the bird may be, if you insert time and effort, in the end you two are gonna be like a magnet.

    I'm in university, and spend a lot of time at home. I'm only away for a few hours a day, there is always someone home.
    I really want a pet at home (I have a horse but he lives at the barn) because I love pets, especially pet birds.
    Right now I know I don't have the money, but in a year or two, I will probably have it and I'm projecting myself in that future, wondering if the circumstances will indeed be favourable to having a parrot in the home.

    I have a sun conure and I adore him but if I would have known how ear piercing their scream is I would have gotten a different bird. I will never part with him because I love him but oh lord is he loud. I also have a baby Congo African Grey and she is much quieter and very much a baby who requires a lot but I love every minute I spend with both my birds I do not work so I have the time to spend with them both. My advice is to do your research before you choose a bird. Join Facebook groups ask questions watch videos and learn as much as you can.

    I can confirm that you should wait till graduation at the earliest. My dad bought the family an African Grey which was close with my older sister. She went away to college and left the bird with us and he was really depressed even with her visits. Thankfully she went to a college in the same state and she eventually took the bird with her. Long story short she married, had 5 kids and became a busy stay at home mom so she gave the bird to her inlaws where he is happy and healthy today. And her story at least had a good ending. Go to a parrot rescue and see how many birds end up there. It's traumatic for the bird when they're bonded to a human and then they are given away. Wait until you're settled in life and have done research to get a bird. If you're young and want experience with birds, see if you can volunteer at a local bird sanctuary or bird rescue.

    My and my family will have to reorganize everything in our house and "birdproof" our chimney and windows so I'll propably be out of high school by then (or at least it will be the last year). I also have no friends and they'll propably fire me from every single job because of my social skills so I'll have enough time for a bird. I just don't know if I should get a cockatiel first or save up some money, plan everything out and find a way to somehow fit a galah cage in our house. A "starter" bird would propably be the best in my case because getting a bigger house with our money is as likely as catching a cold in the summer. It can happen, but we'd have to be extremely lucky (or unlucky if it's the cold). What do you think?

      @@yanusanders7686 I'm pretty sure I'll be an adult when I get out of high school. I also reasearched a lot and I think a bird would actually be better than a child (at least for me). I also desperately need friends so there's that. I don't mind all the work if I'll finally have somebody to spend time with, even if it's a smaller bird (which it will propably be).

    This is kind've a loaded question, but I've been working toward getting a parrot for years now, and I'm looking to own my *very first* large parrot. With that in mind, would anyone recommend getting two parrots so that they could have a flock from the start?
    I do work at home and I'm out of college, there is a routine in my life that has room for dedication to a bird. But the truth is, I can't be with the bird 24/7. Even on scenarios where I go out to restaurants with the family on friday nights in the evenings, or when I go grocery shopping, etc. If I want to give my bird the best possible life... Would that require a constant flockmate?
    Or would you all recommend that I start with one bird since I'm a genuine beginner? (I do have alternatives where I could work at a bird sanctuary in order to obtain experience with parrots)

    • @travelingman9763
      @travelingman9763 5 лет назад

      Two keep each other company. Just spread the purchase out (1-2 months max)so they can bond one at a time with you before with each other. Recall and free flight training or imperative for bird happiness even if don inside. Cages should be for sleeping but inside a bird room. Parrots are not meant to be locked up like prisoners. Make sure they can simply chew and play with safe toys when you are away. Take outside in travel cage is what I do .You will see the birds show much interest and actually look better after getting some sunlight.

    African grey parrots require a huge investment of time. They need at least 4 hours a day of interaction with you. They cannot be shut in a cage all day, or they will be miserable. If you can't give them the time they need, it's not right to get one. Very unfair to the parrot. I waited until I retired to get mine. I'm able to give her the time and attention she deserves. She's a very happy little wench birdie, lol.

    I've had birds since 2004 straight, budgies and an Hahn's Macaw. Currently I have the Hahn's Macaw and an African grey. My issue is that I had a baby in 2018. The Hahn's Macaw is really clingy and loud, I've had him for 8 years, the African grey has been with me for more than two years. I'm allergic to birds, that's why I got the Macaw, the clinginess and noise is the worst, he screams when nothing is happening and he screams when people are visiting, even when i'm just close by or holding the baby. The african grey is really really dusty so everything is covered. Don't know what to do with either of them. Keep them or get rid of them.

    • @hulda2002

      @Morgan Cramer don't have time to work at all with either of them, they just stay in their cages. The macaw has had this screaming, clingy behavior for years. They don't work together, the african grey tries to attack the macaw and I wouldn't trust either of them around a baby/kid.

    While trainable, parrots are loud and demanding. Small low maintenance birds are best, especially zebra finches. They chirp, are always happy and are easily obtainable like goldfish.
