How Smokey Deals With Me Being Away On Vacation

- Whenever I leave for vacation, my fear is has always been coming home to a plucked/aggressive bird. So, here are my tips if you have to leave.
I figured many of you who are subscribed will probably be wondering how I was able to post videos the last few weeks if I was on vacation and away from home. I knew I was going to have some downtime on my trip, not to mention A LOT of time on the plane so I recorded a lot of clips before I left and posted videos as I finished them during my time away.

When I left my conure for two weeks almost. I got back at 1 am at night and my dad forgot to cover him so when i got home and turned on the light. His eyes went crazy wide and he was like omg...omg its you., I let him out and he crawled into my hair and talked to me and gave me many kisses.

What type of conure you have?
Wow! Is Smokey just the chillest bird ever? My conure gets pissed when I'm gone for even a couple of days. When I get home he will be a total jerk for days. He makes it very clear that I've done something wrong. And Smokey lets you wash her little birdie feets! I could die!
TigerRacing10 My conure is that way too. He is excited to see me then it's like "wait a minute, I'm mad at you." Bite! Not Real hard, but harder than normal. 😂

I had a pet chicken once. Used to wait for me outside knowing what time I would come home. Then run to me!

Some people just don't realise how much time one can and should put into these parrots , mine's cage is cleaned 3 times a day , only seed is left in over night and fresh fruit / veg bowl every morning with a bowl of assorted nuts & raisins plus water changed 3 times a day , not counting at least twice a day out of cage time , but I am retired now , so I can do this but for someone that's working , it would be hard to give this much attention , and they really do need it , unfortunately I will be going into hospital in the near future so my bird will have to go out the back in a bird flight surrounded by my other birds in separate aviaries , I am hoping this will give him enough to look at during the days I'm away.. great video ( again ) It's good to see someone put in as much effort as I do ...

I think you’re setting yourself up for failure by thinking that spending the most amount of time you can with your bird is really what’s needed! That is in our nature as humans to want to coddle and spoil our birds as much as possible! Because it makes us feel needed! But you’re almost crippling the bird! A birds life in the wild is hard. They fly around ALL day looking for food with no guarantees. Sometimes they go to bed hungry. In captivity we make it so the bird doesn’t know what to do with themselves when we aren’t there! You want the bird to be as independent as possible- that’s where the foraging comes in. But the bird has to be on a very healthy chop before you can get max value out of your treats. Gotta find a balance between cage time and play stand!

I love your garden
I would not recommend getting a parrot unless you have the MONEY to take care of it properly. Life can change so fast (financially, due to illness, major move, etc.), and if your bird gets sick it can end up costing you thousands of dollars. In my case (because my parrot had frequent fungal infections), I spent money I couldn't afford. I believe my bird might still be alive today if I'd had the money when she suddenly became critically ill on a weekend & expert medical care wasn't available. Sharing your life with a bird is incredibly special but also very expensive, time consuming, lots of work, and a real heartache if your life dramatically changes in a negative way for the bird. Having someone you can trust to care for your bird so you can get away at times is SO IMPORTANT. Without a good support system and a bird-smart friend or relative to take care of your bird while you're gone, it's totally not a good idea to commit. Another thing I would do differently is I would have gotten pet insurance. For me, life changed so FAST that I was not prepared to meet the needs of my pet. I would give most anything to have my bird back again. Losing a parrot is unimaginably heartbreaking. I've loved birds all my life but never wanted to commit because I didn't think I'd be a good parent & questioned whether keeping basically WILD creatures in captivity was fair. I'm grateful for the time I spent with the birds in my life. They gave me SO MUCH JOY. Just study up on the lifetime care/feeding/attention needed to be a parrot owner. There aren't many people out there who truly qualify for the challenges. (I mention this because I love them and have seen so many simply discarded when the owner finds out what is truly involved and gets rid of them - very traumatic for the bird). I would guess it's kind of like having a child that never grows up emotionally... and birds can live a long time!
I've been watching some of your videos and let me tell you something, Passion, i see it for your bird and i can tell how much you love your bird and it makes me pretty happy to see someone who is dedicated to their pet(s) thriving while under their care.
It's really nice to know that although you were gone for awhile, you both were able to still have a good relationship. You mention also having her since she was a baby. I see a great bond and trust. You also have a nice family. I enjoy and appreciate your videos and especially about having a grey.

Thanks. It's true that NO parrot is equipped to handle solitude. They're not wired to handle being alone whether a Budgie, a Maccaw and everything in between.
wow,Smokey is the most relaxed Grey i've ever seen, and when i saw you actually wash her feet i couldn't believe it,,it was amazing to see as i have never watched anyone do this on any parrot video's i've watched. you are awesome. You clearly care very deeply about your animal's needs and well-being. So many people get a pet and then neglect that pet. You made a commitment to your bird, learned all you can about it, continue to learn, and honor your commitment. Kudos to you!
Birds are very special, last year I lost a blue front and a orange wing Amazon both about thirty years old. I'm 70 now and would like another Amazon middle aged. They have so much love in them. I love Smokey, God bless you both.
I know this video is a little bit older but I just wanted to say that your an awsome awsome awsome pet owner my friend. it is so refreshing to see someone who really cares so deeply about the pets lives that their in charge of I really love it. I think your a great person as well and I can really tell how sincere you are and how passionate about what your saying. I think it's wonderful that RUclips allows for us to reach so many people. I am 39 married with kids and rite now I only have a tegu and the wife's beardie. but I do love birds as well when i was younger we always had a parakeet and latter a cockatiel and there wonderful. I didn't have the Internet like we do now to get information from and I basically had to wing it lol pun intended. I have been watching your videos and that of others for about a year now and I have my heart on a green cheek conure. and with the help of your videos and others I'm confident that when I finally get my hand feed baby from a reputable breeder that I will have the tools and confidence to do it rite this time. thanks for the inspiration and informative videos please keep it up my friend. sorry for such a long post just needed to get that out there.
Your bird is just the best in the world. she is so well behaved and beautiful .I love her alot . Trust me if people could reach out and touch things on the screen in real then I would defenitely cuddle it and lots of kisses will be showered .

Hello there....... just want to say how wonderful I think you are in the way that you care for your bird and about your bird...
You treat her with such heartfelt consideration and love and solicitude.... I am deeply touched... I wish all people treated their children, their spouses, friends and pets in this way. Such a fine soul you are....... it is a delight to watch you with your bird and listen to you........ I'd say you are an angel in disguise...... You young man make my eyes tear up. You have earned that beautiful connection to your beautiful Smokey. You have made me feel normal again. My Betty, bites but I adopted her when a baby came into her original family and they thought they had to find another home for her after 13 years with her beloved 'flock'....I understand and I also know how long these birds hold grudges. I use an oven mitt if she doesn't accept 'step up'....and shoot end up swapping spit or new foods. We went through a difficult year a few years ago, bankruptcy, new and very off the grid home and she started plucking. Heart breaking but we got through it and her feathers have grown back. Is it normal to have new feathers be a pinky red? To become a flock with an african grey is a huge responsibility! I am in awe of their intelligence. In fact, I have long ago thrown out the idea we humans are the smartest on this planet. Bulloney! 'Foraging' toys? I just found a super make it yourself toy with tp tubes, hemp string and beads. I am a little worried about the beads but I have lots to chose from....and I know how to make beads from paper. She loves her cardboard boxes. I also am planning a cage like yours as an aviary. What do you suggest as the cage material? I'd also like to get her a mate. Actually I need to know how to go about making one...I live in zone 1B, unpredictable horrible weather so she has to stay inside. I am designing a bumpout window/room for her and whatever mate SHE chooses. I feel such responsibility for her and I am 40 years older than you! I've 'interviewed' everyone that might make a new owner/home for her and hey, just not happening. What do you feed Smokey? Betty LOVES and only loves, Everything Bagels. I worry about GMO foods and go out of my way to ensure she doesn't get any GMO. I feed her a parrot seed but that is more of a cage ornamentation for her. I've lived with her for 14 years and want to add more to her life. Gotta go watch teaching biting is not OK. I have just accepted this and know when she'll bite and when she won't. Had my upper lip pierced! Ha ha ha...you'll be hearing from me quite a bit...thanks for sharing your wonderful relationship!! Why can't there be more humans like you!

I'm so glad you have your mother you can trust while you are away. That said, respectfully, I have recently lost both parents. I hope by now (7 years later) you have at least one alternative. Hard as it is to face, we will not always have our loved ones. Smokey is very fortunate bird to be so loved. Thank you for your teaching others good bird practices! Well being

You have well trained parents too. Seriously, parents put up with a lot beyond their own children. My mother took care of an iguana and a tortoise for 4 years while I was away at college. At the time I didn't think anything of it and basically took it for granted, but now I know what a hassle it must have been, and I know she didn't want to do it. So a big Hoorah for your parents.

my four year old is sooooo much like smokey. seeing your relationship with her is incredible. instead of bribing her, you earn her trust. truly inspiring!! the only reason i haven't committed suicide is because of my young, feathered boy. ;) thank you for these videos. best parent i've seen...and best trainer. lemme know how/if i can market/help your efforts. you're better than anyone i've seen.

That is such a funny comment, on the other hand I know what that's like. My female cockatiel changed her admiration from me to a boyfriend I was dating and she wouldn't allow me to scratch her head or "step up" - nothing. The guy was a jerk to ME, but kind to my bird. 🐤
My bird loves me but my mom is always with it and she always say that my bird don't like me or she is getting away from me and when I talk my bird start looking for me then when my mom talks she always say omg my bird is always looking for me and no me but she is my bird and she is looking for me no her that just gets me mad

I’ve learnt a lot from this video, my brother owns a African grey and I own a jack Russell terrier!
And just by this I know that my dog could understand what was going on by watching this and hearing in the back round he felt left out !
You may think this is silly but my jack (his name) Has a great heart and was a god send as i got him as a gift when suffering from cancer . So I’ll always watch this again x
Very informative! I am a bird boarder from Miami, I give all my boarders tons of love, out of cage time and attention, just wish I had someone like me to leave my macaw when I go away (which is very rarely for the reasons you mentioned in your video) I especially have a special place in my heart for greys, they’re highly intelligent and love observing everything that goes on around them!

What a very good lesson you taught for bird owner's and to those thinking about it. I have owned my Orange Winged Amazon for 34yrs. He is a rescue from the '80's here in the U.S. He survived being smuggled from poachers into the country. Any way over the years I have had to leave him on occasion & go out of town. I always made sure he was well taken care of. The best of your lesson INHO is that to others considering purchasing/getting an exotic bird, the birds are social creatures. Quite different from other animals. If one doesn't have the time to spend with your bird and you cannot deal with their 'flock' ways Do Not Get A Bird!! This is how so many exotic birds end up in rescues. Research first to see if your lifestyles can match with any pet one decides to get and be able to commit to that pet for many many years. 🖒 Really enjoyed your video.
I have a 5month old male Eclectus, got him when he was 4month old. Now I have to go on an unavoidable three day trip and
going crazy to decide whether to board him or get a bird sitter. After watching your video and reading some of the replys it was easy to make the right decision. He's staying home and I already made him foraging toys, one for each day. Thank you and everybody who wrote in. ERIKA

You are absolutedly right about them recognizing & finding your voice reassuring. If I need to be away most of the day I set several alarms which are just recordings of me talking to my parrot. I have videoed his reaction and he visibly relaxes although he knows I am not actually there.
Love your series! I talk to my Charlie on the phone when I'm gone for a few days and he loves it! It's wonderful to see the investment you've made in your bird/child!
That is so awesome that you wash her feet and she is fine with it! And, I love that aviary! I get so worried about putting her in an aviary as opposed to a cage in the house where she can always be with me. But it seems that there is no problem with her attachment to you even though she "lives" in an aviary!

Love your outdoor Aviary! You take such good care of Smokey! She really loves you. I had an African Grey he was 35. His name was PaPa Had to put him down so to a brain tumor that was causing him to have lots of seizures. I miss him very much. My Amazon would not do good with me being away for days. She very attach to me like Papa was.

I have 5 princess parrots. They live in their aviary all the time, but I often go in and play with them (they're not allowed inside the house as per the house owner's request -- but it's a walled up aviary with just one wall as a fence to provide access to shade and sunlight). Often I'll go with my family to trips across the country, and I'd leave toys and treats and food and water (enough for the time away) to distract them. Normally when I'm home though, I'll play music for them or just stand outside and talk about my day. They fluff up and come close to the bars when I'm talking, so I generally take that as a good sign to keep going. Even if I don't know what else to say, I resort to making puns or just saying "I love you" a bunch of times.
One of the princess parrots was my uncle's and was bought by itself about a year and a bit before I got the other 4 birdos (my uncle's bird is now mine because he couldn't keep up with its needs and we don't believe in giving family away no matter if they're not human). When he'd go on holidays for a couple weeks, then come back, the bird would be mega pissed at him and wouldn't leave his side for weeks afterwards. I'm honestly glad we have him with the other 4 birds, since the flock helps him to feel secure and happy even when us humans are gone. Also, it helps that the aviary is outdoors and other Australian parrot species come and go and talk to my babies. Also, there's a pigeon and a turkey that come and say hello to my birdos, so when I go away, I have faith that they won't feel abandoned or alone. (also, they love naps so I surmise that most of our time away usually passes quickly for them lel)

I had an eclectus male. He was use to being handled, but he didn't like strangers and he hated kids. After yrs with me he loved everyone. He would eat with me, sleep in bed with me and everything. He passed away 3 yrs ago. I miss him. Seeing you and smoky just make me reminence 😁 thank you so much for the tips and y'all are amazing together

Smokey is a lucky bird, if that is your home or your parents home and smokey didn't have to move from it while you were gone , and has family that smokey knows , does smokey get along with your dad ? I have just gotten an abused cockatoo ( mad max ) 1 month ago, My wife has a family member that gravely ill in Vietnam , she will now have to go herself as I cannot leave max and 5 other birds as I don't trust anyone to take care , and I've just starting to make small head ways with him ,I'm glad smokey fared well while you were gone ,your lucky to have ma- ba take care of smokey . I definitely agree that if you have family or friends who are experienced /have a good relationship with the bird, they are the absolute best sitters. My bird regularly travels with me to visit family and friends, particularly my parents. I am lucky I have bird friendly parents who were willing to develop a close relationship with my caique. He is used to being in their home, and to spending time with them without me, and I am assured he is receiving proper care.
Of all the bird videos your have the best home for an African grey.

We humans are so lucky that critters accept us as companions. We can learn a lot from them.
Totally agree on all that was said.. I take short vacations but my parrots are looked after by another family member that the birds get along with and do not leave the house during this period so it is no way stressful to them as they are with some they know and like. And the person understands all the dangers of having parrots in the house that are never clipped, so I can trust them to do the right thing regarding safety. :)
I face time my birds multiple times a day when I have had to leave - I have a 94 yr old mom in NYC who needs me and I just recently had to start going back and forth .... and I live in LA ... I have 3 grays (Diva is 30, Licorice is 9 and Greystoke is 6 yrs old) and 1 caique. All my birds are flighted but choose to waddle around for the most part. Licorice and Greystoke are pluckers. Greystoke came to me plucked and I feel like Licorice saw her get attention and decided she too would pluck. Diva is more like a cat - she is independent and has not ever plucked. My husband stays with them when I'm gone which = locked up during work hours when they would normally be roaming around so I too make a lot of wood toys to chew and will now start making foraging toys (I already stuffed a couple of small wooden blocks with pistachios and they love them) for them - everything you say is spot on. The Caique loves the plastic foraging toy I bought - the greys are either afraid (:iconic and Greystoke) or don't care (Diva). ??? They are very picky. Anyway, my hubby FaceTimes me every day 2x/day or more on weekends and they do see me and interact with me. It has helped them (and ME) IMMENSELY!!! I can't NOT go see my mom and have a REALLY hard time leaving my menagerie. Thanks for the vlogs - glad I found them!
I have a grey parrot and got Aviator bird harness. I thaught my bird how to act putside and we are always together. :) She is never stressed :)

Wow. I just gotta say, when I see people owning birds I try so hard not to judge, because I feel bad for the bird. They may be loved and taken care of, but they were meant to fly, not be cooped up in a tiny cage! But when you went out and we get to see your aviary, I gotta say I was very impressed! That bird must be one happy birdie. Not only is she loved and taken care of, but she can actually fly around in her "cage"! (I wouldn't even call that a cage.)

If I may ask, do you have the bird outsid ethe bedroom when you go to sleep, meaning - is she alone for 8 hours each night cuz you are in bed? And how does she respond to that? My sister used to babysit our birds when we were away, but she moved to another town. Now we place them with a professional bird sitting outfit and they are FINE with that: all three remain together and a new environment stimulates them. The only drawback is that we need to have them tested for the 4 malevolent bird diseases every year for them to be accepted, as they are in contact (after a quarantine) with rescue birds we take in transit on behalf of PerroquetSecours. It's an additional expense, but it's worth it. The sitting outfits are in private homes and the caretakers are very knowledgeable and able.

Great videos! I have an African Grey named Smoky as well. My problem is, when I take him out of his cage we won't go back in until i give him a head rub for about 20 minutes. We do have a very close bond. Can you give me some pointers on getting him to go back into his cage?
Also, he will only talk when he is outside in his aviary but not in the house. I'm at a loss for why that is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Biff
