    For those who are commenting on how small this cage is, please watch the video (or actually, just the first 2 minutes) before commenting. This is not the cage that she is housed in. The bird shown in this video was still in the process of being weaned and is still not able to climb and is still barely able to perch. In a larger cage, the bird risks serious injury from falling (again the bird is very young and still learning to perch). You say this is what you use to house your parakeet. Actually, this size cage is way too small, in my opinion for an adult parakeet. The cage is only suitable for short term housing of a weaning baby or as a travel cage. If you visit my channel, my bird is housed in a large walk in aviary. I don't mean to be rude, but it is not fair for someone to comment without even watching the video. If you are housing your parakeet in a cage this size, proportionally, you are housing your bird in a much smaller cage than what I provide mine in her walk in aviary. In the future, please don't jump to conclusions before listening to what people have to say first. If you disagree, please help educate us by posting your own videos to help educate the public rather than criticizing people who are trying to make a positive difference.

    Extra advice:
    When you bring a bird home, sit down with it in the most peaceful area and talk to it for a bit. It can get used to your vocals, and the environment. I recommend talking to it in your room. It worked pretty well with me and my parakeet.

    • @itsabeaan1776
      @itsabeaan1776 7 лет назад +30

      CourageWolf AJ I'm not sure about that because when a bird is being moved to a new house it's a tramatizeing experience for them. If you talk to the bird while it's stressed out like that then it'll think "This is the voice I have to remember so when I hear it I get away so I don't get stressed"
      I think that the Parakeet was a exception but it's good that it worked ^_^

    • @wmfife1
      @wmfife1 7 лет назад +18

      Food talks. When bird is stressed it can speak louder than words. Talking real food here not just treats. Whatever it takes to make the bird feel loved and genuinely cared for.
      Remember they are like little children - and we've all been one of those once. Little things leave impressions... and trust takes time to build, but can be destroyed in a flash. It's a continuous ongoing project. Make everything you do a message to them of peace and security and they will be your friend for life.

When I got home I stopped by a very good friend of mine, I left the parrot in his home for few hours the when I come back too take my parrot home I realized that my friend was in love with my first expensive red crown parrot. I have a green cheeked Amazon! I've had him since he was a baby! He had a cage just like that only until this year, and we kept it on the floor.... We got him an upright one with wheels now, though. My dad is a complete jerk to my bird so it's really hard gaining his trust, but now that I'm older I won't let my dad mistreat him any more.

    Hi, im a new bird owner, I've had my Budgie/Parakeet for almost 1 month and we are getting along great, he doesn't bite because I don't push his boundaries. I really liked that you said not to push on their lower tummy/knees because I did that once and he bit me to tell me no. of course he didn't do it hard. so now I do it with or without a treat (and believe me he knows what "do you want a treat?" means!) and he hops right on, when he is in the mood...haha.
    just wanted to thank you for a great video, there's a lot of conflicting information about how to 'tame' birds out there, and I found your video refreshing

    Cage size can vary, depending upon how you will 'house' your bird. I intended to have my bird out in my house during daylight hours, and so I built a 'smaller' cage for him (about 2'deep x30" wide x3' high). Initially, we would lock him in his cage each night and say 'it's time to go to sleep', then turn off the light in the room, partially cover the cage so it would be darker. Eventually, we put an air filter and radio into the room near the cage, on a timer so it went on and off with the sunlight. The bird learned that when the filter and radio turned off, it was time to go to sleep, and he would return to the inside of his cage on his own. We never had to lock him in at night after that. The only time he's locked in is when we leave the house at night. ONe more thing I'd like to add; all my birds seem to enjoy having the door to their cage open outward and down, so they sort of get a drawbridge effect 'porch' to stand on. That way they can sort of 'sit' outside of their cage on the door. It's where my birds spend about 90% of their time. While it can be hard to find cages like this, it's easy enough to convert others, by using various bendable thick wire to change the attachment area of the door from side to bottom (unless the door is the full height of the cage; then, you might simply fasten a perch to the door instead so the bird can be 'outside' while standing on his cage door). Then just use a dog clip or quick link to attach the top to the cage front.

    We live in Perth, Western Australia my wife bought a blue/gold seven year old macaw, brought him home six weeks ago in travel carrier, then allowed him to move into same cage size you have in end of video in the house for a week, during this time I assembled a large aviary outside which he moved into as soon as we brought the cages together.
    He has now been living outside for five weeks, plenty of interaction and varied diet, he loves seeing all the native parrots coming to feed in the garden and squawks loudly to them look at me and moves around the cage comfortably, he delicately takes treats, nuts, orange etc from everybody (occasionally nipping or biting the hand that feeds him) we don’t react other than moving hand away and not giving him the treats.
    He sometimes will allow me but not the wife (He’s her bird but had male owner previously) to scratch him through the cage and he is given treats when he does that.
    He allows and is comfortable with people in his space to clean and change feed bowls etc however he resists attempts to step up as you have demonstrated which is fine but then he is not treated to a nut, he has an awesome bite as I experienced once, I did not react to scare him but he almost got blood, this has made us nervous if he approaches us inside the aviary from above hanging from frame, I’m sure he is trying to be friendly but bites if allowed too close, sometimes it’s more of a nip but we are nervous.
    Is it just going to take time and perseverance to get him as comfortable as your birds are with you or is there something else we should be doing?.
    We wanted to bring him indoors on cold nights but he won’t step up and will head to highest corner if pushed and we don’t want to scare him or get bitten what should we do?
    On cold nights we cover the whole aviary with a tarp and blanket.
    If you have any suggestions please tell us.
    Thanks till then we will keep learning from your videos which btw are so much better most.
    Cheers,
    Wayne

    Hey! Thanks for another great video you've really helped me out, I got my first bird 5 days ago, it was aviary bred and never really had any human interaction.
    After going through your video's thoroughly beforehand, it gave me enough knowledge to make sure I could get it settled in as quick as possible and it's already coming out of its cage by itself, exploring and stepping up.
    You've helped me turn a very skittish and terrified bird into an out going and happy bird, so thank you so much!

    You're right, there is no leader in a flock of parrots. They react according to the birds around them, and make very loud calls to communicate in the flock. Birds move when the flock moves. But stronger birds always bully weaker birds when there isn't enough space, mates, food or whatever reason the stronger bird doesn't feel safe enough. With a big parrot you certainly can't allow the bird to bully you, and I think that's where people get the idea of leadership. Really, they only need to just figure out what their parrot is upset about, and go correct that. With new bird, it is obviously not enough trust, and it doesn't see you as a member yet. Great video!

    I've had my Yellow Naped Amazon for 15 years. I got my first bird when I was 13 years old and unfortunately I was taught many old school methods, that I learned over the years. Back then, most birds sold, we're wild caught and we're very hard to tame. I got my last bird, that was hatched here in the state's. I got her when she was 3 months old, so I could finish up the hand feeding and bond. This worked very well. She was learning to sing at about 6 months old. Even with all of my experience, you take it to a new level. You are like, The Bird whisperer. Thankfully, my bird is pretty cool with everyone and will step up when asked. I'm 50 years old and I will have to will my bird to the girl who my bird really loves. She's only 22, and is closer in age. I've already let her take Larry home for a couple of months and they both did fine. I just found your channel yesterday and I've watched a few of your videos and I'm learning a lot from you. Thank you for sharing this information.

      You know like they use their beak as nutcracker right? No mercy.
      Lets see, get a clamp, and screw it tight on your finger then twist it around till your finger either bruise or bleeds.
      Oh yeah, and sometime they bite cause it's funny. I had this scarlet macaw (not mine) but it was a well socialized bird anyway. Went well for most of the time, but that one time it looked at my arm and just bit me, so fast that it looked like a peck. But all i see are 2 holes, and purple marking. It stared at my arm like doing some experiment. You can feel the bite wound burning and jumping under the skin.

    "you use whatever it is your bird likes best."
    You mean, like everyting? :-)
    Seriously after three years I still don't know what this zany Blue Crown likes best. She seems to like everything equally! Although if I were pressed I'd say raw onion & fresh basil she really loves.
    My Half Moon that I had for 26 years definitely had distinctive likes & dislikes.
    Great video. I've been a parrot owner for 30 years and agree with all you said in this video. This is the first video of yours that I have watched, but hand's-down this is the best parrot video I've ever seen. I can tell already I'm in for a treat with your channel.

    Is there anyway to prevent your bird from hurting themselves while they are flying? Our family is considering getting a bird, I really don't want to clip my bird's wings, but I feel like I sorta have to since I know how dangerous it can be for a bird if they get spooked and fly into a window or ceiling fan. Not to mention the fact that I have a cat AND a dog (though the room that I want to keep the bird in is off limits to the dog but not the cat). Your comment addressing this topic was pretty vague so I think I need a bit more info as to how to train the bird not to fly/hurt themselves if the cat or a family member accidentally scares them. Anyone else got some advice?

    • @evilkitty303
      @evilkitty303 7 лет назад +3

      Allison Koester If you can't get the cat out of that area you need to teach the cat the bird is not a toy. What I will say will make your cat think the bird is associated with a negative thing. So just get some rice in a water bottle or a loud unpleasant noisy thing. And when ever the cat look or goes near the bird shake it. The cat will scare and find the bird scary. Protecting the bird.

    • @evilkitty303
      @evilkitty303 7 лет назад +3

      Allison Koester Also the flight feather will grow back. And if you want them to fly just put a curtain over the window.Just make sure all doors and windows are closed. Never bring your bird outside if not clipped. They will fly to freedom.

      @MajikkaniHand 7 лет назад +5

      You don't. Birds are a mess--it's just how they are. You can limit the mess by feeding pellets (they don't throw out the stuff they don't like, because it's all the same) and trying to make sure he's getting enough attention (one budgie really isn't enough--they're flock birds--so chances are he's bored and lonely and that leaves more room for destructive behavior, although he'll make a mess even perfectly healthy because that's just how they are--like a one year old, more on the floor than in the mouth.) Put down rugs or otherwise change the environment so it's easier for you to clean. (Also, switch out the seed diet and move to a good quality pellet even if not to control the mess--it's not good for them to just have seeds.)

    I was told (by a really dramatic facebook group, which basically say your bird will die to everything!) that seeds are a no go for birds, not even for treats! Your opinion? And also monkey nuts! The bird garden near me feed all 1,500 of their birds them, but according to this group, one monkey nut and they'll die!!

    • @mikegregersen4724
      @mikegregersen4724 9 лет назад +2

      Dreaded Banter The problems with peanuts (which is actually not a nut, but a legume that grows under the ground) is not so much in their fat, which is average compared to other nuts, or their nutritional content, which is also good, but the fact they still are mycotoxins and aflatoxin, a fungal toxin that can cause cancer, liver damage, and the potentially fatal respiratory disease aspergillosis is a big problem - even here in 2015 - still a neglected problem.
      The fungus is in the soil that peanuts grow in. Most of fungus found on peanut shell, but some are also from the nut itself.
      Roasting peanuts reduces but does not eliminate completely these toxins. Anecdotally, some parrot owners even reported that their birds have allergic reactions to peanuts that cause various allergic symptoms in birds, and more irritable behavior.
      If you choose to give peanuts to your parrot, you can only give them the human quality, shelled, roasted, unsalted peanuts, and keep it all the way down to very few only a year - and only for quite exceptional treats / apartments.

      Dreaded Banter There are some parrots owners who will be at the extremes and believe they need to shelter their birds from, well, the world. Avian nutrition, believe it or not, is still in its infancy and isn't thoroughly researched. The amount of research that has been conducted are often research done on chickens or cockatiels and extrapolated to fit all parrots. So, no one can truly say they know the "perfect" thing to feed their birds. However, we can use what we know to make -at the very least- informed decisions. I don't think feeding an all seed diet is a healthy choice for most parrots. I don't think that many clipped birds should be fed a high fat diet, as they are already predisposed to obesity. However, feeding seeds/nuts sparingly will not kill your bird nor do I think it will have an adverse effect on their health.
      In my opinion, what's more dangerous to a pet parrot is one that is bored or one that isn't trained. If the bird is bored, it will likely self mutilate and pluck. If the bird isn't well trained and behaved, he will likely be passed on from home to home from owners who got a parrot with very different expectations. I think seeds and nuts are okay to feed to your birds if they're used to encourage foraging or to help with training.

      Russell Lewis Yes it is. You can do so much so he doesn't escape or get injured. for example: Don't leave the window open or cover them with stickers. See now this is very good practical advice. I see a lot of Animal Vloggers that basically condemn anyone with a parrot that works a 9-5. “If you work a 9-5, a bird isn’t for you.” And it’s these same people who have all the time in the world because they get paid for making videos. Or people who work from home. So they can spend all day at home. When in reality life isn’t so fortunate for everyone. We all want to spend as much time with our animal family members as we can, but if we can’t provide for them then we REALLY have no business having them.
