    Okay everyone, this is pretty amazing and I am overwhelmed with joy! In only 2 days since this video was posted, I received over 50 comments that were so positive and inspirational. There is no doubt that with time, there will be someone who will come along and leave a hateful and nasty comment. Here's what you can do! Don't respond to people who are hateful, they are only seeking attention, even if it's negative attention. Instead, let's continue to spread love and compassion. Together, we can show that despite the evil in the world, love conquers hate. Please like this post so that it makes its way to the top!

      Thanks for making these videos. I've learned so much from you and your advises as I got my African grey and had no clue how to take care of it. So thanks once again. You keep spreading positivity here. I have one question though. How did you manage to train smoky to turn upside down? I tried that with my bird and she gets scared and bites my fingers to let her go and to get away and stand straight again. If you can make a tutorial video showing us how you did that.. I'll appreciate that a lot. Thanks again!

      wingsNpaws I’m trying to harness train my African Grey also named Smokey ☺️ and I have watched your harness training video but Smokey doesn’t like any specific treats and she doesn’t respond to treats. How else can I harness train her. She’s petrified of the harness but has no problem tearing apart the box it came in. 🙈 please help.

      Mirac Amour, you can also watch Gotcha the Cockatoo. He was an abused bird. Her mommy got her to become comfortable with being upside down in her arms, hands and even on a surface such as a table. It took a lot of love and perseverance to accomplish this. The bird must see that it can trust you. Trust is the key. Good luck!

    I'm really glad that I found your videos, I rescued a grey almost a year ago now and she was locked in a cage on a seed only diet with no fresh fruit or out of cage time for OVER 20 years at least, so she's very talkative, but unsure and nervous / scared of hands. I've been using your tips and advice on bonding with her and putting in a lot of effort over the months! She has finally learned to step up and puts her foot out willingly to get onto me, it's never been forced and I'm glad for that! I am lucky enough to spend all day with her and I mix our play and training time a few times a day.
    She's coming along so well, and is so much healthier in body and mentally! We're moving on to learning to accept and ask for head scratches, she's never bitten me before, and she's unsure now, but slowly but surely we've been having fun with it and working on it!
    Proud of her for doing so well, and so thankful for you putting these videos out for everyone! It's been great to learn from you when I was so unsure how to handle and bond with a larger, possibly hostile and abused bird. Thank you from me and Cinders!

    Happy Thanksgiving! I am from a small town Brownwood, Texas United States. Thankful for living another day and loving all the helpful information on feathers!! After all my African Grey was adopted bald with a patch on his head. He has clipped wings. As the feathers are dropping I rarely have many people who go in debth with the details on the grey anatomy of feathers!!! I heard of a woman say it took three years. My cockatiels and conures grew back feathers in a very short three months. Yes it is a powder down feathers. So I try not to handle the feathers because he will just now allow me to pull his wings out in the shower. I noticed he saw the conure take a bath in a small water bowel.He had just gotten out of the shower and tried to step in this small water bowels so I think he noticed that he might need a bath?? I have a Barbie bath. I am glad you told me this because I have learned some helpful information!! Did Smokey have to learn how to fly all over again?? Oh my bird has Balls all sizes and colors because they love those and the marbles and rocks!

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  5 лет назад

      Yes, after regrowing all her flight feathers, she had to refledge. She developed a fear of falling from clipped wings so that was another hurdle we had to overcome. Greys are fast learners! If you place her cage next to your conure's cage, she will copy your conure and bathe.

    Happy Thanksgiving! Yes I too count the things I am grateful for. And I try as often as I get a chance to do something that adds to the happiness in the world. It doesn’t have to be anything grand and with a broad reach. Just what I can do, in the moment that comes up for me to do it.
    It’s wonderful to see Smokey in normal loving interaction with you. She has her own personality, and will do what she wants to, but she also trusts you so much, and will go along with how you want to position her, what you ask her to do. I’ve only had my conure about six months. We have come a long way, but I can see that it will still be years of accumulating good experiences together to build that trust more. Happy happy....

    Ur an incredible guy man. Im in London UK 🇬🇧 n we dont celebrate thanksgiving. But i totally agree that if everyone in the world gave a lil bak it would make this world a much better place. For me i believe in not wasting resources, looking after the things i have to make thm last and to treat others how id like to b treated. Manners r paramount to me, nothing makes me happier than when i encounter a polite caring and considerate person. Animals and nature should be treated with respect by all, it frustrates me when ppl assume animals r stupid and pointless. These people r so separated from the 1 thing thy wil always b a part of (nature). My wish for thm is that thy can b enlightened by beauty that nature is.

    Hi John. I'm so thankful that I found your channel when I got my own parrot. I incorporated alot of your training techniques for my Amazon (particularly the flight recall and training him to fly downwards at steep angles). My Amazon is still pretty young (7 months) but I've been working with him alot since I've started watching your videos. On the 3rd of Nov, he accidentally flew off. I came home from running errands and he was so excited to see me. I took him out of his cage and placed him on his stand to play and I left the living room for a couple seconds to pick up a bag on the porch and he flew out behind me. My dogs were also on the porch and I believe that spooked him and he flew upwards. It all happened so quickly and I could tell he didn't expect to fly that high upwards but the winds took him even higher. I was determined to do everything to get him back and I was glad that I used the clicker during our flight recall sessions. I found him back on the 5th of Nov. I searched high and low and for him and he eventually responded to my calls and the clicker. I know in my heart if it had not been for your techniques I probably would not have gotten him back. He is fully flighted and spends most of the day outside of his cage with me and as heartbreaking as that situation was I still can't bring myself to clip his wings. I've seen how flying has grown his confidence as I've had him from a baby and I can never take that away from him.
    I don' t know if you've covered this in any of your other videos but how can I create safe and happy interactions between my dogs and bird? I've kept them separate since I got my bird (out of my own fears I guess as I didn't how to have them interact safely) but how I can teach my bird not to be afraid of them or my dogs not to afraid of my bird?
    Thank you for all that you do- from Trinidad and Tobago

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  5 лет назад +1

      WOW! Thanks so much for sharing that! To be honest, the same exact thing happened to me when I first got Smokey. I am now much MUCH more careful about closing doors, as I'm sure you are. I think what we can take from this is that although our birds did fly off, they were able to be recalled and recovered. I am beginning to see a lot more ads for lost birds this season and guess what? They were CLIPPED! Clipped birds cannot recall back because they cannot control their flight. I'm so glad that despite the situation and how heart wrenching it must have been, you didn't clip his wings. I think what's important is that we learn how WE can prevent this in the future rather than punishing the bird for it by clipping their wings. As for birds and dogs, I recommend keeping your bird inside the cage when they first meet. This way, they can't hurt each other. My dog knows the stay command so I use it when I need to. She's also a small dog so she can't jump up and try to get Smokey. However, I never let them interact. Too much can happen in just a split second and both can do serious harm to the other.

      @@CharissaHarewood You have almost killed a 7 month old baby, I hope you understand that a pet parrot cannot survive on its own in the wild. It would have sat quietly somewhere on some branch terrified of its surrounding until it either starved to death or some predator would have finished it off. Accidents like that happen all the time (!) and dozens upon dozens of pet parrots perish this way, worldwide every day. Dozens die from broken neck injuries when flying into window panes, mirrors. Having to put to sleep your injured baby bird will be a traumatic experience when it happens to your pet. I am certain you will regret not having clipped your bird then. I hope you have learned your lesson to always clip your parrot, no matter what others say or what you see on TV! If you must have a flighted bird get a Falcon, at least it can survive when it fly's away. I also had a similar experience with my Grey when it was a baby. Thankfully it was also was recovered like yours....but for a few days I was despairing, fully aware that I have failed my beloved pet as its owner and protector, ....and that most likely I have killed my baby bird. I have learned my lesson and from that time I have always clipped his wings. He adjusted well. At first, for a few days was a bit withdrawn, but soon regained his composure, cheerfulness, and joy and is just the same happy bird as before. Now in his twenty first year.

    Not sure who said this, but if we want to make the world a better place, we can. One person at a time, in each of us. We can do this by choosing to see the good in everyone, including those who we may be having issues with. By feeling gratitude. for all that we have in our world, including the people who love us, the pets who unconditionally love us, and even as basic as forhaving a roof over our head and being able to get up every morning. I live in New Zealand, and wingsNpaws has taught me A LOT about raising and living with birds. Mine are still eggs right now, and I am due to meet them in January, bring them home February. I am very grateful for you and Smokey for making these videos. :-D Thanks to you, I have some really cool toys, cool toys to construct, and though my birds will be hand raised, thanks to you, I know how to earn and maintain their trust in me. Hi from North Warwickshire in UK - you guys have an amazing relationship. Mine is a work in progress after rehoming my boy two tears ago. It also doesn't help that he's not easily tempted by healthy treats. Still he lets me scratch his head sometimes and goes into his cage to kiss me through the bars (provided I have my lipstick on) and then he says "hello gorgeous " and gives me a whistle. I have learned so many useful tips from watching your posts - thank you.

    I can feel that.. I got my Grey at 3 months of age and he was clipped and now he is almost 14 months old and still not grown his wings. Every time a new feather emerges , it breaks. I noticed that when he jumps, he hits his wings on the floor which breaks them. So to prevent that, I now keep him mostly with me or in the cage when I’m not around. I hope he gets his feathers back soon.

    This is such an inspirational video! I had a really quick question regarding my Senegal parrot, we just got him about a month and a half ago and he is now 5 months old. He has been to three homes already and gets quite stressed out when moving to new houses because of his rough first few months. Anyways, we are leaving for a week-long trip for a week at the end of December and we are worried about where to keep him for that week so he doesn't get stressed out thinking that he is going to a new home. We would normally put him in a bird and animal clinic for boarding but I am afraid he might get stressed out because the clinic just leaves them in their cage all day. We could take him with us but I am afraid he might become traumatized on the flight and we will be going somewhere where the weather is well below freezing and he might catch a cold. We could also give him to one of our friends but I am afraid he will get stressed out thinking that he is moving to yet another home. What do you think we should do with him for that week? Should we take him with us, give him to a bird clinic for the week, give him to a friend for a week or maybe something else that you could recommend?

    One should think long and hard before clipping a parrot's wings and have a VERY good reason for doing so. The idea that the condition will be temporary and will therefore cause no damage is erroneous. In some cases, the PSYCHOLOGICAL damage can last forever. Happy Thanksgiving! There is tremendous variation in greys. Harlan had a complete set of new flight feathers after just 1 year, but it took another 4 or 5 months to teach her to fly. I was glad I never had to deal with a broken blood feather while the new ones came in that first time.

      @@wingsNpaws - The aviary was a huge hit. We live on a quiet street across from a little grade school that has a small summer program. The aviary was in front of the house, up a walk and inside a gate, so pretty ideal. People, and kids, passing by could see and hear Harlan, but not get too close. Harlan got plenty of attention. At the time she was going through a phase of asking everyone to "tell a joke." She picked up some new sounds (wild song bird calls and "Hello" in a woman's voice from someone, couple other things).
      I designed the aviary to come apart easily so it has been dismantled and stored away for the winter now.
      Question: I know you live in a warm climate. What temperature range do you consider too cool or too warm for Smoky outdoors? I tried to limit it to the 60 to 80 range.

But, I’m still unsure which one to get, and was wondering if you or anyone else can help me pick. Hi! I don't recommend a Cockatiel, African Grey or Cockatoo as they are very dusty birds and not good for allergy sufferers. If you only have one bird they will need lots of attention. If you want hands of birds, then finches or canaries are good. It's hard to say with bird is good for you as each species requires different set ups, food and interaction.
      Conures seem to be cuddly and always want out of the cage, but most birds need care and attention.

    • @RepentfollowJesus
      @RepentfollowJesus 5 лет назад +3

      You need a quiet one in case you move into an apt some day. Just about any parrot is going to need a lot of attention . They are highly intelligent. It's like having a 3 year old. Why not go visit birds somewhere to get your bird fix? Maybe become a docent at the zoo. Wait until you know what your adult life will be like. Plus they need loads of blood tests when you first get them and they are very expensive to keep. Bird toys are outrageous. So are proper cages and things they need in the cage. See if you can find a book called Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot. And subscribe to Bird Talk magazine. You will learn the most from them. And it's correct info unlike lots of false information on the internet. Please please read the book at least. It's very interesting and even funny in places. If you just can't wait, get a pair of love birds so they can keep each other company. But if you don't handle them they will become wild and bite you if you try to pick them up. Look on Amazon and get a used book if need be. I don't recommend a Senegal. They are kind of nervous birds. God bless.

    Odd, I have had several parrots, currently a hawkhead and an African grey ( Congo). I always kept my birds wings clipped to keep them safe from drowning, flying into hot grease, flying into a ceiling fan , flying out the door or flying into a window which they often can't distinguish. I have allowed a few to grow them out a time or two, like the ones I have now. Never have I had any feather growing issues. And thankfully no broken blood feathers to have to pull out! I wonder if there are diet differences that contribute to it. I could talk parrots all day with someone. I don't get much chance to these days.

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  5 лет назад

      I don't use my ceiling fan when Smokey is out. When we cook, she's also put either in the aviary, her indoor cage, or her bird stand inside my room. I am paranoid about closing doors when she's out so I always triple check to make sure both the screen door and main doors are closed. She knows and can differentiate between glass versus no glass, so she never crashes into the glass doors/windows. If those are the reasons why you are keeping your bird from being flighted, I just wanted to let you know that they can be mitigated by changes you can easily make through your routine. Don't take my word for it though, there are many others who keep their birds flighted, recall train them, and do not ever have any issues with their birds drowning, flying into hot pans, ceiling fans, etc.

Seeds are good but not as the only food. My bird prefers veggies to fruit. Loves bananas stuffed into raw (hard shell) rigatoni noodles. i take a raw rigatoni and stuff it with fresh banana and he takes it into his leg and eats it like ice cream in a cone. Try it? It is a wonderful treat, soft banana in a crunchy rigatoni noodle the bird can chew, bite on. Absolutely loves it. You can stuff the rigatoni with other soft things, like cheese, hummus, cantelope, apple, pear, etc, Good luck with your bird.
