  • French version of Les Misérables, original concept album. I don't own anything, all belongs to the creative geniuses of Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil.
    COSETTE
Ils vont venir bientôt, et je n'ai pas fini
De laver, de brosser, de cirer le parquet
Et puis sans un répit j'irai servir aussi
Pourtant, elle me battra quand même

this sounds so much darker and more heart-wrenching than the english version... people are right when they say that "Les Misérables" is best heard in french.

This is the original song, "Mon prince est en chemin", which was adapted in the english version as "Castle On A Cloud", and then there was a french version of that english version, in the 1990s french version of the show, and it was called "une poupée dans la vitrine". So now there are two french versions of the same song!

This song will forever have a special place in my heart. I was part of a musical troupe with my parents when I was a little girl (6 years old) and I sang this song in front of more than 1000 people. I remember practicing this song and the performance with my dad every day. I remember the moment I walked on the stage and hearing the crowd being all "Awwwww". That was 19 years ago.

    Lyrics in English:
    [COSETTE]:
They'll be coming soon and I'm not finished
To wash, to brush, to polish the floor
And then without a break I'll go and serve
Still, she will beat me anyway
I know but I got used to
And it hurts me less than my loneliness
My prince is already on the way
I do not know how he will be
But I know he will come tomorrow
My prince is already on his way
With a stroke of my magic broom
It appears if I want it
    In a whisper of music
And I travel in his eyes
    All children have a childhood
    A family and toys
It's all or nothing, luck or bad luck
I have no father, no mother, no doll
My prince is already on the way
I do not know how he will be
But I know he will come tomorrow
My prince is already on his way
It's all or nothing, luck or bad luck
I have no father, no mother, no doll
    La la la la...
My prince is already on his way
They'll be coming soon, and I'm not finished
To wash, to brush, to polish the floor
    My God, that's Madame Thenardier!

I found that several efforts trying to adapt musical pieces from French to other languages failed. Verdi's Don Carlo and this Les Miserables are both victims. Perhaps we'd better just enjoy the original only.

  • @teeemkay
    @teeemkay 11 лет назад +22

It's interesting, but the lyrics are a little sophisticated for something you'd imagine a six-year-old (I think that's how old Cosette was) singing. You don't hear little girls pondering about not having a childhood or the bad luck that made her an orphan. "Castle on a Cloud" says basically the same thing, but in more concrete, child-like terms, imagining worlds where bad things don't happen.

    • @justanotherbohemian3827
      @justanotherbohemian3827 4 года назад +5

No, I believe it is still childish. Think of it. As Cosette walks from the inn to her chores, she probably sees other children playing with their toys and walking with their parents. "Oh" she thinks, "they have everything and I have nothing. They are lucky, I'm not. They have a father, a mother, a doll. I don't. I am not lucky"
Her childhood was dark and she was so alone. It is only natural for her to think so much and so deeply, during the hours of loneliness and hard work.

    • @andreaelizeth
      @andreaelizeth 4 года назад +4

@@justanotherbohemian3827 yeah, people really think children are stupid. It's not that farfetched that a child will be aware of the misery they live in, besides it has also been proven that trauma makes you mature faster.

    • @justanotherbohemian3827
      @justanotherbohemian3827 4 года назад +3

@@andreaelizeth I totally agree. And we shouldn't forget that 19th century was a time so bleak and cruel for most children that they didn't manage to have the happy carefree childhood children enjoy today. It is only natural that when living in poverty, hunger and misery from a young age they will grow up a bit quicker.

Chuck Suit I was wondering exactly the same. I always knew the Broadway version. I just knew this french version and I'm totally surprised. My french isn't perfect, but it's definitely weird to hear Cosette talking about a prince who is coming (she is a child, for G'd sakes lol). Still... A beautiful version

    • @rationaltrekker2509

The French version employs different imagery, but the underlying theme is the same. In both languages, Cosette is fantasizing about a different life for herself in which she is loved and happy. Both versions are escapist, though the French specifically refers to a prince coming to rescue her, whereas in the English version her escape is in her sleep.
