I feel like Hook is always credited as the face of Joy Division and New Order just because he's got the attitude. Definitely not going to try take anything away from him- I'm a fan. Morris always struck me as being the backbone of both groups, though. His drumming really reflects Curtis in a lot of ways. Thanks for the vid.

Morris was definetely the only trained musician if I recall. The rest of the blokes just learned as they played. What all of them had (and that shaped their sound in both bands) was creativity and trying new things all the time.

Good analysis. Stephen's influences included Krautrock bands such as Can and Neu, which account for his penchant for repetitive, hypnotic hooks and willingness to experiment with electric pads. He's a very machine-like drummer: precise, unwavering, and consistent. In fact, during the recording of Unknown Pleasures, producer Martin Hannett would have Stephen record the drum parts to the songs one drum at a time to eliminate bleedthrough, emphasizing the robotic quality of Stephen's style.

Nice video. The thing about Stephen was that as far as technique is concerned he was/is the best musician in Joy Division/New Order. The sheer energy and invention of his playing left a lot of room for for those sparse bass lines and, on Closer, a lot of experimental guitar and synth sounds. My favourite track on that record is Atrocity Exhibition - a song which is held totally together by that driving all kit, drum pattern that sounds like the approach of the apocalypse wearing jackboots - a fairly simple but effective bass line, haunting vocal delivery from Ian and just wild guitar and synth noises that sound like Robert Fripp in a blender!! Amazing. I think a lot of that electronic drum stuff from New Order has its foundation in Can (another amazing drummer in Jaki Liebezeit) and Kraftwerk and went on to influence the later hip-hop scene with artists and producers like Dilla. IMO everyone here re-wrote the book in new and very interesting ways - we need more of that today please.

Did really well with this video. Morris is a genius. The whole thing about Joy Division is that they were like all great art: Often at the edge of chaos and yet not falling in to it. Certainly the most influential band the UK ever produced. New Order started getting really slick and while that has its charm you felt it was merely going for money rather than art.

Nice, Cobb! I would absolutely LOVE an episode on Jeremiah Green, the drummer from Modest Mouse. His beats are so good on their early stuff like "This is a Long Drive for Someone with nothing to think about", "The Lonesome Crowded West", and "The Fruit That Ate Itself"
Lots of rolling style drum beats (Trucker's Atlas), but many amazing grooves (Exit Does Not Exist, Ohio, Beach Side Property, Head South). Him and Eric Judy (the bassist) were and incredible rhythm section.
