A couple of points that I would make sure to clarify: the viewfinder diopter won't change the focus of your photos, it only affects how YOU see it through the viewfinder. And, the skin softening setting only affects the jpeg files. It's not that you can't shoot in RAW, or RAW AND jpg, but like any other photo effect it will not show on the RAW files. Embedded into each RAW file is a jpg image (it's what you see when you are reviewing your images in the camera), and it's there even if you shoot in RAW only. But, you would have to use extraction software on your computer in order to pull it out. Just an FYI in case anyone is confused. And here it is 2020, and the a6000 is STILL one of the top 10 selling cameras!
Using the a6000 with its menu and options is like asking for directions .. you know where you want to go but you forget or don’t know how to. Thanks for mentioning aperture priority video mode .. easily overlooked for being such a useful feature.
Great analogy! The a6400 has the custom menu page where you can basically customize a menu page with the settings you use most often. Wish the a6000 had it but it’s understandable it didn’t get it with an update.
Watching your videos from France while waiting for my first ever camera to arrive which is sony a6000; a gift from hubby. As a beginner there's a lot to take in but your videos will definitely help me using my camera better. So THANK YOU!!
WOW! that little tip about the view finder focus dial just helped me so much!! Thank you!!! Bought this camera used, and I've been struggling . Thought that it was just my "old eyes". Needing reading glasses to use my camera was a huge pain. Now I can see what I'm shooting.
The little focus wheel by the viewfinder has been on Sony cameras since the A100 at least (I have one). It is a diopter corrector for people that wear glasses. If you wear glasses (and I do) it is super hard to see through the viewfinder with your glasses on. With that little corrector wheel you can dial in your glasses' correction factor and take your spectacles off while shooting.
Awesomesauce!👏 The Sony camera settings can be so confusing sometimes because there are so many different menus. The shortcuts are super helpful! Would definitely love more videos like these 😄
Just wanna say Ive had my camera for over a year and because of your' videos Im actually starting to use it. such a beginner i's overwhelming so Thank you!!
About tip 2 - I always hear about the importance of keeping the shutter at the double of the framerate for the best looking video... so one would think it was better to shoot video in shutter P. to keep a constant shutter..? How important is a constant shutter??
To your first tip: it recognizes the face via face detection (the form, contrast, color etc.) And reduces the resolution. You do the same thing in photoshop for beauty shots.
I have a question. What do I need to set my camera (also Sony a6000) at for rolling shots. I take photos of vehicles moving and I need the wheels blurry and the background also but the vehicle in focused. I've tried many ways but my photos aren't coming out right. Please help!
This is a technique called “panning”. You’ll have to move your camera with the vehicle - so pan your camera and take the shot while panning. Set it to S, for shutter priority, and then try 1/30 shutter speed. The shutter speed depends on how fast an object is moving. This takes practice, so don’t think it’s one snap and you’re good. Hope this helps!
@@kyletaggart thank you! And yes it takes 100s of photos to get the perfect one! I also have my camera sitting on an 3 axle gimbal stabilizer when I take photos so it wont jump up and down, or should I hold the camera in hand?
I never set the mode dial to movie. I would just dial in 1/50s and start recording. But the movie mode does have a few benefits I just found out. For one, the image is already a bit cropped which helps framing. In any other mode you see the cropping only when you start filming. Also, with Clear Image Zoom enabled but shooting RAW, you can only change zoom to 2x CIZ after you start filming when in A/P/S/M mode. But in the movie mode you can pre-zoom and into Clear Image Zoom before you start recording. Nice features I didn't know about and have had this camera for a good 3 years now :-)
Some things I didn't know about the a6000 till now! Always been a Canon camera guy but decided to give Sony a chance, and with the Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens like wow the pictures come out fantastic, Inserting enough that the Sigma lenses are cheaper on the Sony camera's than the Canon.
Excellent camera... In Turkey, with the kit lens, it's around 520 usa dollars... You don't need 6300 or 6500 if u r not interested in 4k video... Btw, with a sharp lens (such as sigma 30mm or 16mm ) you'll have awesome videos and photos with that little body... Btw for the video, u may need the sony sel 35mm or sel 50mm or the kit lens, because of the stabilization in lens )
Thank you so much, man! I'm a newbie and bought my a6000 last year and hasn't explored the features until I saw your vids. I find it difficult to look for a tutor who is well informed about the model and lucky me to land on your site. :) I'm still saving up to buy a new lens but would want to start shooting portraits and landscapes using the 30mm. I'm not sure if you already have a video about this but would really appreciate if you can teach me some tips using the 30mm lens.
aquatech.net/collections/water-housings-sony/products/atb-a6000-camera-water-housing-kit not very cost effective! But I’ve heard great things about that company.
I own the Sony 35 and loveeeee it. I would be hesitant for the sigma if you’re using it for video (and need to use in camera audio). The auto focus is loud (only up close). Other than that both are great lenses!
I’m deciding between the a6000 and a6300. I’m buying them used so price doesn’t really matter. But what i mainly want to do is make videos. So which should I pick?
6300! It’s got 4K (if you ever decide on it), log profiles (if you dive into color grading), it can shoot at 120fps (slow mo), and the viewfinder has a better resolution. It’s body is also coated differently and will hold up better over time. 📸🙌🏻
For the video/movie mode, if you are using the one press red button, is it still in default settings? Its a bit hard watching your video at work without the camera..lol
I talk briefly about it in the video. Aperture Priority video mode, f 1.4 or f1.6, 16mm Sigma lens, one light to my side, custom white balance (to make it less green straight out of camera), and that’s about it!
The only issue im having with the sony a6000 ,the white balance is off,I tried auto and custom settings ,most of the time when shooting portraits, the colors is kinda odd, sometimes it looks fine but most of the time its off..🙄
I’ve heard great things about that lens. However you want a little more length for portraits as to not be in their face. Sony 50mm f1.8 is perfect. Or even the Sigma 60mm f 2.8.
Hey sorry I’m just seeing this now. It marked your comments as spam! As go your question, I’m not 100% sure. You can use face detection, so I imagine you can use AF lock as well.
thank you sir.. if you can make a video on how to use lock on for video with Sony A6000. actually we are wedding Photographer and Videographers. we are planning to switch from Nikon to Sony.. But we are not sure about lock on for video.. If you help us by making a video on this.. we will be very thankful.. thank you sir.
Hi Kyle!! How are you? Great video!!! I got a question. I have a question. MY 1080 hd videos that I record with any camera doesn't play at full HD on my Mac desktop( it's a new one) or and on my mac air laptop. It degrades a lot. 4K works fine. The same footage plays perfectly on my Iphone and Ipad and 10 year old Dell. Do you know what the problem is? Thank you so much Jose
Degrades? That’s strange. Also you mention 4K so do you have an a6300/6500? It could be because of the resolution on your iMac. On the MacBook Air, their screens aren’t very good. So I’d be surprised if your 1080 HD footage looked different than other HD 1080 footage. Hope this makes sense. Thanks!
Hi Kyle, Thanks. I guess that's one explanation. The curios thing is that watching RUclips and any other media is perfect, full HD. I have a6500, Nikon D5600, Cano G7X Mark II. Same thing!! Thanks appreciate
hikyletaggart Thanks Kyle!!! I thought about that also , although I never changed any settings since unboxing. I’ll play with it. Appreciate the help!! I really The content you put out! 👍👍
Viewfinder Focus- I’m pretty sure that’s changing the focus it based on your eyesight.... if you have a glasses prescription. I can’t remember what that’s called though. Thank you for all the helpful videos!
Yes, it’s the diopter adjustment wheel - standard feature on the Sony line (others, too). Can be moved accidentally, like when moving camera into and out of a camera bag. I believe a stronger lens is available as an accessory. When setting the wheel, look at the EVF icons not the picture image - icon letters should be sharp.
I am considering buying a Sony a6000 but i am not quite sure whether it's an Upgrade to an iPhone x camera, since this camera is already more than 4 years old. Can you really see a major difference?
Absolutely. I have just the iPhone 8 and it doesn’t compare. Also, it’s about the lenses working with the camera. The camera and kit lens may not impress an iPhone X user who’s using portrait mode. However the a6000 with the 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 is another story.
I think I’ve messed with my settings too much. What setting (mode?) do you have it on? My Soft Skin effect is blank. It’s “unavailable” I guess. Lol. I found your videos too late. I have watched all your Tips and Tricks vids and I can’t find the answer.
Menu > tab 6 (briefcase) > page 6 > Setting Reset. Then you’ll be back to how it was out of the box! I’ll add that in my next tips and tricks video. Sorry I never included that! I mainly shoot aperture priority. 👍🏻
hikyletaggart thank you so much! I was going to ask you to help me reset it! LOL & thanks for taking the time to make these, just wanting to take nice pictures of my kiddos. Can’t wait to get started.
Hi there! So glad I found your channel. Love all the tips! I am having trouble figuring out why all of my shots of my daughter are always blurry. I can't seem to get a nice crisp shot without having the ISO way high. I feel like I'm sacrificing clarity for graininess. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
I would shoot with aperture priority and let the camera decide ISO and shutter for now (use ISO Auto), and use a high f stop when possible to have the entire image in focus. Or a low f stop when you want just her in focus. A tip, the beep noise is when focus should be locked in. Also the focus modes are helpful. Maybe use center focus (default is wide), and then compose her in the center. Hope some of this helps!
Thank you for getting back to me! Tried your tips and always wait for the beep for the focus but still ended up with soft pictures that had a weird "smudged" like quality to them. Do you think it could be the camera itself and I got a dud? Thank you again!!!!
Are you using the kit lens? It’s not the sharpest lens in the world. Not sure if it’s just not meeting your expectations or if you’re causing camera shake. Could be anything! Wish I could help more but maybe take it to a camera shop and see if they can assist!
I should have mentioned, the a6300 has a microphone jack port. If you want better audio and want a ride mic you’d have to go with the a6300. The a6000 or 5100 do not have microphone jacks. There is a Sony mic for the a6000, but I don’t own it and can’t comment on it.
hey man. i recently got the sony a6300 for 420$. i also got sigma 16mm f1.4(highly recommend you to check it out, its killer for astrophotography and also video)(I realise youre shooting with it :P) and got the 55-210mm lens.
Actually if you have been on dslr for few years, you would automatically search for these features in a new camera. For ergonomic purposes. Ive bought my a6300 for 2 weeks and figured out all the settings in the video and remap the function keys as well. Nevertheless good video
I'm new to this camera and photography in general. Im just wondering whether you know the Sony a6000 would work with a microphone that plugs in to a microphone jack via a micro USB to headphone jack adapter?
Apparently it does! However I’ve never tried it. Someone suggested this one before: (keep in mind I’ve never used this before) www.frys.com/product/7824729?store=7&source=google&gclid=CjwKCAjw7cDaBRBtEiwAsxprXd3r_GCz8J1q6WGw-sejrv4Qb_5CIoMdbCw81FOfPjl0nYUHDbOWORoCPpAQAvD_BwE
It’s a file type. It’s the most well known file name for an image. It’s an image that your camera processes when you take a photo. The colors will be a bit more vibrant than a RAW, and you can edit jpegs, but you’ll see some degradation of the image if you go too crazy with the editing on a jpeg. Jpegs are also much smaller in size, so they take up less room on you memory card or computer. ✌🏻
I must say that the soft skin effect happens automatically when I make videos and I have no idea how to cancel this feature.. If anyone has a clue, please let me know!
hikyletaggart Homie you create amazing quality content and you're one of the few youtubers that uploads so many videos of the Sony a6000 in 2018. Please keep it that way, god bless you dudee🤘
2019 and super excited to get this camera!
Nice! Hope my channel has helped!
Just to show that in 2018 the A6000 is still relevant.
Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching Ron!
Good cameras don’t really become irrelevant imo.
It's 2019 and this little beast will stay with me for at least 4-5 years more who knows a decade too!!

Glad you liked it!!
Hey to tip 4 you can also use the Aperture wheel to quickly move the focus from left to right.

I agree, however there are a lot of settings that are great buried in there! Thanks for watching! 😊

thanks for the view finder focus!!
Could you add a blog about using filters and lens hood covers on the a6000? I would love a refresher course on this subject. Thanks!
I like how you talk about the contents. More layman-relatable terms for noobs like myself who've just begun on the mirrorless journey 😂
Haha anytime!
Love these tips and tricks, great for beginners like myself! Good video! 👌🏻☺️
Thanks and I’m glad people like em. 😊
About tip 2 - I always hear about the importance of keeping the shutter at the double of the framerate for the best looking video... so one would think it was better to shoot video in shutter P. to keep a constant shutter..? How important is a constant shutter??

Quick question, if you had a Sony a6500 with in camera stabilization, would you change your Sony 35mm 1.8 for a sigma 30mm 1.4 ?
Nope. I mean, I’d like to try it, but I’m perfectly happy with the Sony 35mm. The next lens I want is the sigma 56mm f1.4.
Thank you. You’ve earned a subscriber.
Appreciate that! Video (sometimes two) a week! 😎🙌🏻
Great video man, I film everything on the a6000!

Do you have a favourite app for the a6000 in the Sony app site? maybe you can do vlog on it-thx
To be honest I haven’t used many of those apps. I’d have to experience the more with them!
Did you update to the latest 3.2 firmware?
I’m on 3.2, I think my gf’s camera isn’t I think.
For the video/movie mode, if you are using the one press red button, is it still in default settings? Its a bit hard watching your video at work without the camera..lol
It will be in whatever mode you had it in. So for me, I have it set to aperture priority video mode, so the record button places it in that mode. ✌🏻
What settings do you use to record for youtube and vlogs video wise?
I talk briefly about it in the video. Aperture Priority video mode, f 1.4 or f1.6, 16mm Sigma lens, one light to my side, custom white balance (to make it less green straight out of camera), and that’s about it!
hikyletaggart ok what fram rate do you record at?
30fps.
hikyletaggart thank you 🙏
What mode does the soft skin effect work? Does it work on manual and on intelligent auto? Or works on all jpegs?
Should work in manual, not sure about auto!
The only issue im having with the sony a6000 ,the white balance is off,I tried auto and custom settings ,most of the time when shooting portraits, the colors is kinda odd, sometimes it looks fine but most of the time its off..🙄
I use custom for video, otherwise everything is super green! For photo auto seems to work for me. I may do a video on white balance in the future.
hey..can u suggest the best portraits lens for my a6000? it's sigma 30mm f1.4 good?
I’ve heard great things about that lens. However you want a little more length for portraits as to not be in their face. Sony 50mm f1.8 is perfect. Or even the Sigma 60mm f 2.8.
I have a mitakon speed Master 35mm f/0.9 it's not the best but it does a nice work
as usual , thanks for sharing again ~

Do you know how to get into flexible mode you spoke about? I’m confused?
Christian Chapman change the focus type by pressing fn and you see the different type of focus then go bellow the pagw then you'll see it
It’s a “focus area” I believe. I have it set in my FN menu, and change it all the time. There is center, wide, flexible spot, or zone.
Truly enjoyed the video. :D

hikyletaggart thank you so much! I was going to ask you to help me reset it! LOL & thanks for taking the time to make these, just wanting to take nice pictures of my kiddos. Can’t wait to get started.
No problem! I just happened to be up at 2am editing a video! Haha. Glad I could help. New video tomorrow! 5 easy photo tips 😊
Not sure if someone mentioned already. Soft Skin Effect is not available on Continuous mode, either.
Thanks great tips without clouding the learning curve too heavy.
Thanks Jim! ✌🏻😎
Thanx man very helpful
No problemo! 😎🙌🏻
The last one scared me when I first got my camera lol I had thought that it broke somehow
Great follow up,
The viewfinder focus dial is called a diopter. It is for people who need glasses!
Good to know!
Anyone with glasses can adjust the view as per their glass power
Do you use the a6000 exclusively. I’m thinking about getting one for video. Nothing professional, just fun family stuff
Yup! All my RUclips videos are made with it. You could even get the a5100, which has the flip up screen.
So getting the a6300 isn’t that necessary.
I should have mentioned, the a6300 has a microphone jack port. If you want better audio and want a ride mic you’d have to go with the a6300. The a6000 or 5100 do not have microphone jacks. There is a Sony mic for the a6000, but I don’t own it and can’t comment on it.
I’m new to video. So that might not be an issue for me now. Thank you
Love it! What's the intro song?
I’ll have to look, all the music I use is from epidemicsound.com. ✌🏻
Thanks! Keep making the fantastic videos!
How bout some quick custom settings guide?
Thanks for the suggestion!
can a6000 silent shooting?
Nope. A6100 can.
perfect 2 thanks again!
Haha thanks again Vlad!
Keep them coming
You got it!!
Excellent !!!
Thanks Keith!
As always grate stuff...😊...keep it up bro..its Nitish .
Thanks bro! 🙌🏻
try to put title...when starting video as in the middle the link towards the topic breaks
hey man. i recently got the sony a6300 for 420$. i also got sigma 16mm f1.4(highly recommend you to check it out, its killer for astrophotography and also video)(I realise youre shooting with it :P) and got the 55-210mm lens.
Best thing about good youtubers who have lesser subs than they deserve(you do deserve more), you can directly interact with them and get great advice
Quality vid again 👌
Thanks!
Actually if you have been on dslr for few years, you would automatically search for these features in a new camera. For ergonomic purposes. Ive bought my a6300 for 2 weeks and figured out all the settings in the video and remap the function keys as well. Nevertheless good video
A6xxx video "focus" settings???
Make a video boi plzz
I have a video on focus areas :)
Thanks a lot!!
I'm new to this camera and photography in general. Im just wondering whether you know the Sony a6000 would work with a microphone that plugs in to a microphone jack via a micro USB to headphone jack adapter?
Apparently it does! However I’ve never tried it. Someone suggested this one before: (keep in mind I’ve never used this before) www.frys.com/product/7824729?store=7&source=google&gclid=CjwKCAjw7cDaBRBtEiwAsxprXd3r_GCz8J1q6WGw-sejrv4Qb_5CIoMdbCw81FOfPjl0nYUHDbOWORoCPpAQAvD_BwE
hikyletaggart that’s great! Thanks for the reply!
Can someone confirm that this works?
Thanks for trick 4
Glad it helped!
Youre the best!
Thanks! Haha.
How the hell are u recording on 1440p??
I didn’t 🤷🏻♂️
what does jpeg mean...
Can you shoot makeup RUclips videos with this
Yup! Checkout my girlfriends RUclips channel. Wahlflower! We use the same camera (a6000).
I must say that the soft skin effect happens automatically when I make videos and I have no idea how to cancel this feature.. If anyone has a clue, please let me know!
Really? I’ve seen before someone say face detection does it. So try turning that off and compare it to when it’s on.
@@kyletaggart I'll try it and let you know!
New video is up btw! 😊✌🏻
@@kyletaggart Hi Kyle, Could you deactivate the soft skin on video? thanks.
Your shirt 👍
Thanks! 😎

All these things should be in the camera manual. Read it.

Haha she’s pretty regardless 🤣
Intro was fine until the last clip of you laughing to yourself alone in your room.

Fastest comment ever, haha.
hikyletaggart Homie you create amazing quality content and you're one of the few youtubers that uploads so many videos of the Sony a6000 in 2018. Please keep it that way, god bless you dudee🤘
Will definitely do that! Appreciate all the positive vibes!
