  • Today I set myself a challenge of just photographing landscapes with the Sony A6000 and the kit lens. Let's call it the kit lens challenge!
    I have my A7iv in my bag but will I resist the temptation and keep shooting with the A6000?
    Kit lenses are fantastic when you are first starting out and they give you the middle of the road focal range you need to get good photographs.
    Here is a link to an article I have put together today with the A7iv images as well as the ones from the A6000: bit.ly/A6000andkitlens
    I suppose you could called this a landscape photography vlog ... but I prefer on location landscape photography!
    If you shoot with the A6000 or any of the aps-c cameras, it is a great system for landscape photography. You just need the right lenses to get the most out of the system.
    I'd go for these lenses:
    10-18mm sony: geni.us/Sony10-18mmAPS-C
    55-210mm Sony: geni.us/Sony55-210mmAPS-C
    Or if you have a bit more of a budget:
    28-200mm Tamron: geni.us/Tamron-28-200mm-FF
    Camera clip I always use: geni.us/PDCameraClip
    (It's expensive but well worth it!)

    Great video!
    a6000 was my first camera. Such a great device, light and with awesome sensor. And works great with sony's full frame lenses too. Learned a lot with it, and by watching your videos of landscape photography from several years ago :)
    Always thankful for your positivity and teachings!

    Beautiful images. I love the 3:1 aspect ratio so I shot panoramas quite a lot. I often apply a minimalist gear approach and frequently just go out with a singe camera and just the kit lens or a single prime lens. I especially love lightweight gear so I go out with either the Canon M200 or the Lumix GX85. Thank you for sharing.

    Great video highlighting simplicity and affordability in what has become a saturated market of megapixels and expensive (and often pointless) upgrades. Art and creativity, though subjective, can be found at all levels and in all formats. Go with what you love doing and take great pleasure in the process. The rest is just a bonus. I've missed these videos the past 5/6 weeks so now slowly catching up! Still breathing heavy in the hills? Sell the A7iv (so you went and got one!) and invest in gym membership 😂😉

      Hope you had a good trip dude!! 👍

    Thanks for the video Mike My second camera is the a6000 which was my first mirrorless with the kit lens and the 55-210 telephoto, upgraded to the a7iii with the Tamron 17-28 and the 28-75 as I couldn't afford the Sony equavailent, still use the a6000 for night photography with a Sigma 16 mm 1.4 f lens a beautiful combination. Watched all of your a7iii videos great really learnt a lot from them.

      That's great to hear Dave! When paired with the 16mm f1.4 it is a fantastic little unit for shooting the stars ... I love that combo!!
      The sony lenses are really expensive aren't they!! When I got the 17-28mm, I was thinking about buying the 16-35mm f2.8 but just couldn't justify that hefty price tag ... and with the Tamron being less than half the price ... it made it a no brainer!!

    Great video Mike, Markus pix was encouraging using a small camera that's simple to use, just like you have, forces you to be more creative. You took some awesome pictures. So you do the settings in aperture priority, then put those settings into manual

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  2 года назад +5

      Thanks very much!
      If you're ok with setting exposure in manual mode, just do that, but if you are not sure about how to get a good exposure, just copy the settings the camera gives you across from either auto or aperture priority.

    Smooth post, solid reminder that great images can be made w/older, simpler gear. A6000 w/kit was my first mirrorless cam - still have them. No IBIS and few native lenses at first was challenging. Other “midges” too😁: replaced lens flange (design flaw)- light leaks. Built-in Pano mode was terrible; more fails than not. (Now I do panos only in LR.) Lens itself loaded w/optical distortions that, thankfully, LR “auto lens profile correct” took care of. See for yourself by turning off the lens correct in LR. Big seller back then was ability to adapt lots of “vintage” lenses in manual mode. Sony play store add-in apps were also cool (now discontinued).
    Love the photogentic hut; doorway might make for great natural framing of mountain. Cheers!

      It is a great little camera isn't it! I was pleasantly surprised with the quality ... and how close it actually was to the A7iv.
      Vintage lenses are great to play around with and mirrorless cameras have made them really accessible for all of us. I have a set of Canon FD lenses that I often use when out and about ...

    I found my 16-50mm kit lens on the a6400 to be just fine in most light conditions. For IG or Twitter the Kit lens is ok. Sony's PZ (Power Zoom) lenses also show the focal lenght (mm) on the screen which maked them fun. If you were going to print your photo then maybe better lens glass would be required. Great video a always Sir M.S. cheers from Vancouver Canada

    APSc with two zooms is probably the lightest solution. Sometimes I'm wondering if I'll move to this format. But as the RX10 IV is so versatile, quality also there and wide range of focals, I stay with my A7R3 and the set of multiple lenses when I can drive to location. Many times on treks, I take only the RX to never loose an opportunity. Thanks for the video and the superbs drone videos...

    I had two A6000s several years ago when I wanted to go mirrorless and do a bit more photography. I eventually added more lenses. Even so, I had images shot with the two kit lenses that ended up being selected for a juried show. I've made several prints up to 18X24 and people have loved them. I went to a Canon 6D and 80D with 28-70mm and 70-200mm 2.8 lenses and eventually traded off the A6000s and better lenses. I did keep the kit lenses (plus adapters for the Canon mounts to Sony) to go with my little A5000 and A5100. I've slowed down a bit more now and would like to go back to an APS-C mirrorless without spending a bunch. I'd like a flip screen and 4K video, but it's not really worth spending the extra to go to the higher A6xxx series when I know I can shoot great landscapes and artistic images with the A6000 and the lenses I have. There's a Samyang 12mm MF, TT Artisans 27mm f2.8 AF, a sharp, vintage Konica MF zoom, and adapters for both the nice Canon mount lenses I have and one for Nikon that lets me use another vintage lens I have. I also want to get the DJI Pocket 3 once I sell my drone. So the A6000 that I already know what to expect and the Pocket 3 would make a nice, compact, and easy-to-take-along combo. I love my DSLRs (I was a film shooter before there was digital) and those big lenses. Until I have to drag them along. Not really something you just casually toss in the vehicle when you head out for non-photographic specific runs.

    A little non photo question. I think I have just about watched all your videos by now. And I notice you all most never run into other folks walking about..Absolutely beautiful land that you are exploring. Can you do a video of how it's laid out in these areas. Are these areas national parks or are you allowed to just walk any property across the pound? And how far are you hiking? I am absolutely loving all these landscapes. It's on my bucket list. Keep the videos coming. Thanks as always.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Год назад

      Thanks so much Tracy ... and that is a good question!
      I tend to go out either early in the morning or in the week when everyone else is at work, so I normally have the places to myself.
      Apart from that, I tend not to want to film others as they are probably out for a quiet walk ... so I try to be considerate to them ... on the odd occasion that I am out at weekends, I do spend a lot of time waiting around for people to go by. Also, I'm ok with talking to camera on my own, but it does see a little weird when there are others about ... 😆
      I'm thinking of starting up a hiking channel soon, so wherever I go in these videos, we'll have other videos to accompany them in the near future. In those I'll definitely have all of that info in them as well as links between the videos so you can see it from a photographers perspective as well as a hikers perspective.
      In the UK if it is common land, you have the right to roam, but when on farm land, I keep to the paths as much as possible. I found in the Peak District this was quite tricky to get the shots that I wanted, but it kind of added to the challenge!! 😀
      For some of the bigger mountains, I sometimes walk up to 25km (round trip) which is about 15 miles ... but I have some goals this year to beat that ... last year my total step count was 2,926,546, so this year, I have to beat 3 million steps!! 😆😆
      Thanks so much for watching and commenting on my videos, I really do appreciate all the support! And there is a lot more to come ... 😁👍

    Another great video. My first mirrorless was the a6000, a very underrated camera. Had the kit lens and the 50mm F1.8. Great for carrying on the motorbike. Wish there was a full frame equivalent for my a7rii! A question. You mention using f16 for some of your shots. When I bought my Fuji XT-20 after the a6000, also a cropped sensor, I discovered that if you went above f11 you were at risk of diffraction. On a micro for thirds i believe the max is f8. I didn't know that when I had my a6000 and wondered if that's why you weren't entirely happy with a couple of shots? Wondered about your opinion on it and thought it might make an interesting video subject for you.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  2 года назад +1

      Hi John,
      That's a good point. I am so used to going to f16 with my full frame camera that I did it without thinking about it too much. I did shoot some images at f8 as well so I'll have a look back through them and see if there is much difference.
      I am going to do another one of these videos comparing it with the A7iv ... with a view to printing out the images at the end of the video to see how different they really are on paper.
      Thanks for watching 😁👍

    Great video mate! Im in the market for a new camera and was looking at the a6400. Only issue is I find it a little small (I went and tried it in a shop) and like the handle of the a6600 better. The issue with that is, when spending that much on the a6600, would I be better just going a little more for full frame (A7iii and A7C both similar in price) hard to know lol

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Год назад +1

      So many cameras so little time!! 😆
      If you want to get the A6400, smallrig do an L-bracket for it that will bulk it out a little ( amzn.to/3pHzoGw ). I did this for my crop sensor camera and it makes them a little easier to handle.
      If you were thinking of the A6600, I'd get the A7C instead as it is a similar camera with a full frame sensor. The only downside is that the lenses are a little more expensive for the full frame system ... although with tamron and sigma, they are making it a lot more affordable nowadays.
      I hope that helps.

    Nice job, Mike. What a fantastic day you had for some photography. The photos tuned out great. When did you get the AIV??? I have heard great things about that camera. I assume you are loving it. You have me taking panos everywhere now. You should include a new MacBook Pro to all of your subscribers that you have convinced to make all of their photo sizes multiply. Or at least just one... I hope you guys are doing great, brother. Take care.

      Haha! I have to get the new macbook pro before dishing it out to everyone else!! 😆 My 2017 MBP really struggles at times when I throw really big images and panos at it!!
      The A7iv is a great camera and a really good upgrade ... although for landscape photography I'm not sure if it is worth it ... might be worth waiting for the mk5 to come through. The only thing landscapers would benefit from is the increase in megapixels, but then you might as well get the A7riii or riv.
      I've had it for about 3 months now and am loving it ... I've been using it in quite a few videos since april, but just haven't mentioned it until now ... 😀

    Llyn y Dywarchen, great location, was there last summer after walking over the Nantlle Ridge. Really useful info, I'm essentially a hillwalker taking a photographic record of my routes. I have a couple of cameras, a Fuji X-T3 with a 16-80mm lens and a Panasonic LX15, compact. Have a bit of a dilemma here, though a great camera, the Fuji is just a bit too bulky to hike around with whilst the Lumix, though lightweight, is not giving me enough reach for certain shots. So, though not on the top of my priority list, have been considering the Sony A6000 - sold for £700 with the 16-50mm and 55-210mm lenses, or... should I get, the more expensive, RX100 vi compact, decisions, decisions. Anyway, you've captured some nice images with the A6000, thanks.

    9:26 Heh!!! My camera and lens for 3 years was a ancient Sony a5100 + Sigma 16mm 1.4 so zooming with my feet was all i did.Considering that i usually do around 30 trips to the mountains per year i have allot of nice memories with that Sony setup. Eventually i switch to Olympus EM5 Mk2 + Olympus 14-150 and i consider this a upgrade from all those small bits that annoyed me at Sony (no stabilisation and even top of the line Sony can't compete with Olympus on that, horrendous color science, no EVF, no weather sealing and cheap build quality).Was more than enough for me but for the same money i got now a EVF, pro magnesium build quality weather proof, High-Res mod, somehow better low light photos in High-Res Mode (cause of auto stacking of the 8 shots maybe), awesome IBIS enough to film hand-held, lighter lenses and so on. In the end tho CONTENT IS KING so even a potato of a camera in hands of a good photographer can get awesome photos.Love your videos!

    I always wonder about kit lenses... as most have a weak point...
    Samsung's similar power-zoom was soft on the periphery at 16mm, Nikon 1's 10-30mm the same. Canon's crop sensor kit lenses much the same at 18mm and not super sharp wide open at 55mm. The only kit lens I've found to be really good in all areas was Nikon's AF-P 18-55. What is the Sony 16-50 like at 16 mm ?
    P.S- I live around the corner from that lake... :)

    Some fabulous images Mike. The a6000 is by far the best camera I've ever owned. Although I didn't keep the kit lens for too long. Sigma do an amazing 16mm f/1.4 which you can pick up for a very good price that does much better images (IMO) than kit. I can also vouch for the Sony 70-350 for a super-tele option. Although that's much more at the pricey end.

    • @mikesphotography

      Yes you can. The e-mount is the same as the fe mount. The reason they made the aps-c mode was when the A7 first came out l, there weren't many lenses so this gave us the opportunity to use the older crop lenses with this camera. Hi Scott,
      If you have good quality lenses, then definitely.
      However, there is the other side of things where when someone books you, they expect you to have a "Big" camera. I know a few people who have beefed out their cameras with a cage, a bulkier handle and a few other accessories. Crazy I know but sometimes the perception is as important as the quality of the kit itself in the clients eyes.

    How about the sony a6000 camera for street photography only?Which lens would be better? Which contains stabilizer?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  11 месяцев назад

      It all depends on what you want out of your street photography.
      If you want to get up close and personal, get something like a 24mm prime, or even wider, but if you want to stand back a bit and photograph the world going by. Get something like the 55-210mm.
      You need to take into account your budget, what kind of street photography you like to shoot, and whether or not you want to be shooting in low light conditions as well as how close you want to get to your subjects.
      It's best to do the research... as no one can really tell you want you want...
