The Makita 9404 Belt Sander is a very fine machine.
I particularly like this size belt sander, 4"x24". It has plenty of power and it's a belt size that is readily available. The belts are also easy to change and it has incredible dust collection.
In this video I show a stand I made for my Makita 9404 4”x24” Belt Sander. I love this machine, in fact I just bought another one (both made in Japan) because I can’t stand the thought of being without one of these beauties.
Having this stand opens up a whole new array of possibilities for this awesome belt sander.

I’ve got the Makita 9911 (the 3” baby brother of this machine) rigged up in a stand and it too is a phenomenal sander. You probably wouldn’t want to do a whole hardwood floor with it but for everything else, especially on the bench top, it’s more than up to any job I could imagine asking of it. You’ll never waste your money buying Makita kit in my opinion.

Great job! Agreed about the Makita belt sander. I have the exact same sander only the 3x21 model. Love it and amazed by its quality. I may also buy a second one because they are such a great deal.

I'm just a hobbyist, not a pro, but I've owned Makita tools since the mid-eighties and the only one I no longer have was stolen, not thrown away. I agree completely that they are top-quality. My best router is my oldest router--a Makita 3612BR. I have a Makita 10" miter saw--no tilt and no bevel--just the basic miter saw, and it's still dead-nuts accurate after all these years. This is my "go-to" brand, followed by Dewalt, Bosch, and Milwaukee. At least, the still made in Japan ones are. I'm bummed that they are off-shoring to China (like all the other brands too), so I tend to research more thoroughly before buying these days.

Thanks David. I know you are going to really like that machine. I thought I might need to make another stand for the second sander, but there is no reason because taking the sander out or putting it back in literally takes a minute. If I can find the ball driver :) Allan
Did you perhaps draw up a Sketch Up file when you designed this? I'd love a copy if you did.
I don't have drawings of this. But your comment has inspired me to make another and really document the build and the components. It may take me a few weeks to find a few hours to do it though.
Hey, great jig. I own the same sander and like it very much, too. Mine took heavy abuse sanding almost everything - even falling from the table some times - still works fine. Thanks for the video, really need to have a stationary belt sander now. Cheers!

My Makita 4x24 has to be at least 20 yrs old. I bought second hand from my local paint store that used to rent it out and it's still going strong. Soon after I bought it I bought a foot for it that attaches to the front handle and enables me to turn the sander upside down by screwing the foot with it's two footer holes to a workbench of any type. I also bought a plastic plumbing nipple, the kind with the ribs, that with some minor sanding I could fit inside the dust exhaust hole and attach any of my vac's to ii including my Festool. The only two things wrong with the sander is the rollers are pitted, and so far it doesn't seem to matter, and the cord is now only about a foot long and I'm sure you'll know why. lol I buy all my belts from Klingspor. Especially the planer belts. Those darn belts can turn a tree into a toothpick in no time.
Very nice work! Just bought a 9404 to replace my Skil belt sander from the 80’s. The fact that you bought a second one before Japan outsources to China speaks volumes regarding your opinion of this tool. More than the sander, I was impressed with your ingenuity with your hand made jig/stand. Fine job!

Great job. I totally agree with you regarding the Makita sanders. I have one two and its earned its beer. I been thinking about building a rig to create a stationary sander so thanks for the inspiration. All the best, Gary

My Makita 9404 arrived a few minutes ago. I gave up on my 34 year old Bosch 4x24 sander.
I had built a mount for the Bosch. This video is going make making a new one easy, I have some M6-1.0x60 screws.
I have an old Fein vac hose.

These sander are awesome. Mine is 10 years old and will not die. Just replace the slipper plate and cork every now and again. I have sanded entire floors with mine and use it for all kinds of stuff. Try the new Abranet belts from Mirka.

Great craftsman, never been able to kill a makita and uses belt sander all the time ...
Im ready to pull the trigger on a Makita 9404 or 9403. Do you recommend one over the other? The 9403 has more power 11amps, but a fixed speed and the shape doesnt lend itself to a stationary conversion. Is there an advantage to the variable speed? Using mostly for woodworking projects...table tops, stair treads. Thanks for the advise.
9404 is what I have and could not be happier. For me it is a must for a sander to be variable speed.

Have you found the longevity of the 3M belts justify the much higher cost? What's your most used grit?
Probably not. They do last and the seams are very clean but they are really expensive. I am going to trying some Klingspor belts. I have heard some good things about them. The problem with Klingspor is their online catalog is just so confusing I have a hard time making a decision.
For metal work I pretty much just use 36. But for wood I use everything from 60 to 220 depending on what I need.
