    I got rid of my disc sander becauseI had enough of the mess that replacing the abrasive creates. Also it is heavy and bulky and I really don't use it all that much. So to replace it I built a vertical stand for my belt sander. I think it is better then the disc sander in almost every way. Cheaper Abrasive, variable speed (that the disc sander also kind of has by moving in and out on the disc), better dust collection and so on. I already really like it. I did make the mistake to paint it a dark colour so it doesn't really show up all that good in the video.

    Very nice idea. I bought the Makita 9404 specifically because it has the taped holes on the side. The whole system is unexpectedly sturdy, despite the fact that this sander is heavy and it's held on the side by two M6 bolts.
    Thanks again for the inspiration!

      +Serban Popescu I also thought that this might require some more brackets and stuff to hold it securely. Turns out it doesn't.

    A straightforward design, executed very well. I love it and now have to build one! The shower of dust from a disc sander always annoyed me but this seems to pretty much eliminate all that. It's hard to think of a downside! Thanks for sharing.

    I'm pushing this right to the front of the queue for things to build! Awesome design!

    Very nice. I built a vertical version with my green Bosh belt sander. It has actually the disadvantage that it tends to kick away your work piece. On the other hand you can sand bigger pieces entirely flat and true.

    You should add an outlet for the sander, and a switch to control the outlet. I'd mount it on the right-hand-side support piece - under the table. Of course, if you are LEFT handed, then put it on the left.
    This way you don't have to try to use the sander's power switch, or trigger. You just need to clamp it on with a small hose clamp.
    That is what I've done with my belt sander mount. I find it much more convenient to have the belt sander's power cord all neatly coiled up and tucked out of the way. I have a MALE "socket" - it mounts like a socket but it has the prongs on it, so that I can plug an ordinary (3-wire, of course) extension cord into it. I also have a small neon pilot light near the switch so I can see if the power is pluged in. I mounted the MALE "socket" and the outlet for the belt sander on the rear of the base, and the switch and pilot lamp on the right side, as I said. It makes it much easier to use, move around, and store when not needed.

      neelode The switch is very easy to reach and i don't want to get into cable management so for me that is not a good idea.

    I liked your idea so much I ran down to my shop to see if I could do that to my sander. It would be nice if it could swing down so you could sand a wide flat piece of wood as well.

    Very Good project. the lower portion of your sand is similar to mine. Mine the upper portion is all flat. So, I can turn it upside down belt facing up. I like the dedicated station it provides.

    Really like this design and you've made it so easy to understand.
    I'll have to adapt a few things seeing that I don't own a Makita belt sander but that's par for the course :)
    Thanks very much for posting

    GREAT IDEA !!! I just have to see if my sander has the two holes in side so I can make one. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!

    bad side with the vertical one is that you have more 'tear off'. i use the one like john heisz wich is bigger but drags in line with the grain; it gives better finish most of the time. greetings jorgen

    Great video as usual, I really like to watch them, they are always interesting and fun. I am currently building a big table saw like yours for a bit more than a year now (in fact I started watching your videos when I looked for info about table saws), so I am really looking forward to seeing the video where you'll introduce yours! :)
    Mine is taking a bit of time to build as I am constantly finding reasons to improve the way it is built. I think building such a machine is a really fascinating project as it implies a lot of different fields of skills (depending on how you want your machine to be complex), as it made me getting into metal turning, and now into home metal casting, as I would like to be able to cast my own craddle for the lifting and tilting mechanism of my table saw.
    Cheers!

    • @CosmasBauer
      @CosmasBauer  9 лет назад +1

      ***** Horizontally it tends to want to shoot the workpiece away which can be annoying. Vertically it just pushes it against the table.

    Have you ever had problems with the belt sander?
    I have one just like yours, however, something is wrong with the platen, it is not sanding flat. I've already change the graphite pad, but it keeps sanding unevenly. It sands like a U shape, so if I try to sand a board, it will make a curved profile, instead of a flat surface.

    • @CosmasBauer
      @CosmasBauer  9 лет назад

      Carlos Eduardo I have only had it for a week now so Ican't really tell. Doesn't sound too great. If the graphite wears out I would try to use a steel platen. Works well on my dad's sander.

    For sanders without the threaded holes on the side: A couple of U-Bolts over the handles fastened to a board.
