I can't think of a better beater car for the money than a Pontiac Vibe. It's basically a dependable Corolla that Pontiac turned into an SUV. Now you can take your savings and buy more drum rolls.

Also extra passengers add extra weight. Some people remove the cross bars on the roof rack as the creates wind resistance. Thinner tires will give your less rolling resistance and a smoother ride.

Very true! I have been meaning to do that, but last time I did it, I broke every fastener 😬 gonna probably try it again soon though

Moderate acceleration might be better than slow. Keeping rpm low while pushing the gas pedal 50% to 75% is usually more efficient. Obviously easier with a manual. When hypermiling an automatic, I have lifted off the gas a little to get the transmission to shift, then got back on it a bit. It'll take some practice, but you might be able to get it to shift when you want.

In the mid 2000's I used to do the hypermile thing and was and kinda still am a part of an Eco Modder forum. My highest mpg achieved was 27 mpg in a 99 Ford Ranger v6 4x4 4 speed auto with 31inch tires on it and ever so slightly lifted. Now with that being said some of the alterations that I did at the time mostly running over inflated tires is something I will no longer do as I now understand tire performance and safety and handling and grip and ride quality as well as mpg and overall tire life. I still have that truck and a 01 Camaro. Both are 4 speed autos and what I can say on that I've been obsessed about types of acceleration methods for mpg in the past. But my findings are that trying to coax a 4 speed auto to upshift early and letting off the gas and then pressing the pedal again with more throttle does not help mpg. For one a 4 speed auto vs a 5 speed manual means they have very different gear ratios. Two because the 4 speed auto has one less gear it's ratio spread is wider to cover the same range of driving speeds requiring the engine to rev up a bit more before being able to get into the next gear. Three any super early upshift you coax the transmission to do under moderate load your efficiency will be eaten up by the torque converter having to slip more to get you the same level of acceleration and will also produce more waste heat in the fluid of the transmision. Not good. Four the engines I have that are simple pushrod engine with no variable cam timing are not optimized to be accelerated upon at such low rpm and high loads. Such practices can induce carbon deposit buildup over time and also low speed pre ignition. Five. Most of us here at least in the U.S. don't drive diesel cars and Diesels have a more flat torque curve and many typically are undersquare in their bore vs stroke so they have a longer throw in the crankshaft. I.E. like a longer pry bar having more leverage to apply more torque to something. A gas engine needs a rev to perform and it's torque curve and HP curve are higher in the rev range. Around the mid to upper levels. Six Excessive high load and low rpms is not good for the rod bearings. It's mechanically undignified on the engine and transmission and driveline in every kind of way as it puts everything at a mechanical disadvantage. Seven. If this was a 3 speed auto from the 80's the ratio spread is even wider to cover the same range of speeds. Again low rpms with lots of throttle is even less of an option and even more inefficient. Eight the more ratios you have in a transmission the closer the ratios are and the more low rpm shift points you can have. Nine. Some vehicles well known like the Corvette it's been known that for as light and aerodynamic it is and having a big v8 engine that it has so much torque that if you have a manual and trying to save gas in many cases it does you no good to short shift through every gear. In fact it's then more fuel efficient to skip gears. It's all in the torque curve and weight and other elements of the car. Ten. Moral of the story is low rpms doesn't always save fuel. Your biggest fuel savings is maintaining your momentum in the highest gear available at the lowest rpm at the lightest throttle possible. How you get to that speed is very nuanced.

Good job. I've done this here and there but it's very hard to do on a busy highway. Large commercial trucks like to drive a bit faster in my area and since they are based out of Canada they seem to be able to bend a few laws when it comes to speed. Leaving good space is always a good thing to do but you should always enter a freeway at or over speed limit then drop down to whatever cruising speed you do in the right lane. I drive close to 100 mile a day for my round trip and an extra 70 at lease once a week. I have many routes to work to keep the boredom at bay. I'm also a night worker so my travels are easier that the day person.

BMW E46 have a built in MPG meter and you can get pretty high up there with MPG for a sports car (18-32).

But if you inflate the tyres to 45psi, it shortens the tyre life span, and tyres are expensive.

you accelerate quickly so you get up to speed more quickly
unless you are in like city traffic(but this is more speculative and I havent seen any empirical data)
also if you have a manual engine brake instead of coasting because on most modern cars they cut fuel on slow down
