my sentiments exactly, Egos can ruin us and I dont see one with David. . I think we can have pride in our playing (high confidence) and still not be full of ourselves. He is competitive I am certain...prob. more with himself than others as thats what keeps us in top form.... always wanting to improve.
Thank you so much David Russell. Now I know that Tarrega's "little ornament" is actually a giant pain in the arse to learn, I feel less of a numpty. I sincerely appreciate your skill as a musical, educator and artist. Props to you and the BGS!
The best living guitarist , for sure. And so lovely, too. Thank you. I heard you in Philadelphia on a hot summer day in a non-air conditioned church. You were amazing!
David Russell really has had one big, very full career. What a player and so good to give of his time that we might learn some of the secrets that he holds. Fantastic.
Thanks for posting this. All other "how to play tremelo" youtube videos somehow seem irrelevant now! I had several classes with David back in the "John Gilbert" early 1980s period and he was always enthusiastic and as good a teacher as he is a player. Great to see the old footage.
Always great to have a famous concert guitarist to reinforce the important technical elements. We humans all learn from repetition, what a great opportunity to see this.
What a kind and wonderful person David is! I was fortunate to have a masterclass with David back in the 1990's, he was sick, but gave a concert and a masterclass following the concert. Gracious with his time and just a positive man, Thankyou David!
Great stuff. Love David’s playing - none better. But I really love his generosity of spirit, time and willingness to share his immense experience and talent. Add to that his very warm style and manner and it makes for the perfect teacher. Thank you so much.
Thanks for posting--what a great discussion! Can't believe how generous this gentleman is.

Absolument fantastique. Merci maître David Russel pour cette classe que j’ai écoutée en plusieurs fois, tellement elle est riche d’enseignements, de conseils, de trucs, de décompositions techniques, j’en ai pour une vie! Merciiiiiiiiii!
A true Masterclass! David Russell should be one of the lineup for “MasterClass“ online teaching forum alongside the other grandmasters of their craft , such as Scorsese, and Samuel L. Jackson, Margaret Atwood etc., I’d love to see that! These new phone upgrades must read your mind too! I had just been thinking , “hmm , I wonder if there’s anything useful online that could help my tremolo”(44 yrs young testing gr.5 RCM this semester) and this video was the 1st- top of the list on RUclips without having typed a search! lol One of the pieces I chose For my test was the OP.60 etude no.7 Carcassi so that I could learn tremolo as an intro to the technique almost and was grateful to hear David use it as an example for beginning tremolo exercises as it uses lots of different strings for its technique, not just high E! :) I also wish to sincerely express my gratitude to everyone involved in putting this class together, their insights2 but especially David if he may read this for enhancing my knowledge / comprehension / skill withIn two hours time - once again! I learned a great deal from you sir, so far just online and this1 , ty so very much for your professionalism/selflessness, From Canada with love, J. R. W.
The part about killing the base note i don't quite get, but i know it when i hear it. A smooth and fluid sound. I saw someone playing a tremolo and his right hand was not moving fast really, but his timing was so good that it sounded faster than the hands looked. Timing is everything. Thanks for the help.
Merci Mr David Russel pour ce master class fantastique ! Vos explications, les vidéos, les montages, tout est parfait. Et votre gentillesse est tellement appréciable. Thank you so much Maestro!
I was taught by Geof kitchen who went to the same college as John Williams my idol. I always thought John Williams was the greatest until I started watching you tube, where I see Simon dinnigon an amazing guitarist. Then David Russell, his technique and playing is truly mesmerising and brilliant. I play a Greg smallman and thought I could play to a high standard, I’d love to have a course off this guy as my guitar is just a guitar not played to its full potential now watching David play.
This was a pleasant surprise. Nice to see and hear your voice Tom. Guitar was my instrument when I went to school there. I still play ans I'm still learning. Thank you for providing such a good program. Daniel Rabin.
Not only one of my all time favorite classical guitarists, but one of my favorite human beings period. Thank you maestro for the gifts you have put out into the world.
Now and Ever is an incredible piece so much colour in it - not your typical everyday tremolo but you can almost hear an orchestra at times It really is an incredible piece played too well by David - thank you 🙏
A master, candid, simply fabulous! I follow Mr. Russell since I was a teenager and he is second ton none! Thanks for sharing this piece of master work!
David, you really demonstrate that, in the best of possible worlds, great musicians (and intellectuals, artists, scientists,, ...) are also great people. Your sharing of your knowledge and practice is incredibly generous and totally lacking pretentiousness. Many thanks, I'm so glad you're there. Incidentally: your voice sounds more and more like Sean Connery (a compliment). :-)
Thanks for sharing. David Russell still one of my favorite guitarist. I got to do a Master’s Class with him in 1994 and he inspired me so much with classical guitar studies. Wonderful person!
This is a virtuoso guitarist who spends as much time teaching as practicing and performing. He gives all his wisdom to the masses, for free. What a guy! There's just one problem. I'm from Yorkshire, and I can tell you there's absolutely nothing wrong with clog dancing!
DR is perhaps one of the most insightful and kind teachers out there. Take a look at his masterclasses. He is such a great and nice teacher, and he is a world treasure.
Oh my, this is wonderful. What a great musician, teacher and lovely personality. Want to learn or improve your tremolo technique - why not learn from the great David Russell? Thanks, John Gig Harbor, WA
A simple piece to start with is ‘Feste Larianne’ by Tarrega, actually the second variation of Feste Lariane by Luigi Mozzani (1869-1943). Left hand is simple and its a nice melody.
Mid March 2020 the Friday before the world completely locked down David Russell played Austin Texas. That was the last concert I saw before the world changed.....
wow. this is quite interesting. i am a noobish guitar player and i been struggling with getting my tremolo to sound even, balanced and not too soft etc. oftentimes the bass is so overpowering and bit sharp or "piercing" like he says. thanks for posting
I really liked this video. Because I have an injury to my Right hand, I can only use Thumb, Index and Media (but only at about 30% control), but not plantar finger.
One question i would like to ask you is this:Is it obligation to use Thumb, annular , middle, and index when you play tremolo or you can even use thumb, middle and index?
@@loa_loveoverall I will try it....thank you ! I also refrained from over practicing " Tremelo " lol ! You must make sure your hands are relaxed....classical guitar is very demanding on the hands. ☺☺☺
We are so privileged to have this free lecture.
Just a delight for so many guitarist who cannot afford lessons....and to learn from David Russell for 2 hours is just incredible.
Absolutely. What a shining silver lining during a challenging time

I'd like to go back in time 20 years and study exclusively with David Russell. What an awesome man.
also sell your assests and buy some apple stocks 😃I mean why not also be a billionaire along with a great musician
My hat's off to David Russell. Such a friendly and nice person, like a close friend, doesn't at all act like the Maestro he really is.
How very true. And he has good info to relate.
