Tom’s acting skills were top notch. He was one of my favorite actors, especially in the 90’s. If Tom was in a movie, it enticed me to rent it.
I anticipated he would not live a long life with the drugs.
Still, he was a standout to me and hate to see him gone at just 61.
    Didn’t realize he had a bachelor’s degree, much less a master’s.
    More respect to him.

Gave up on himself? Quite the opposite .. his last movie with Danny Trejo was called Vampfather. He posted a picture of them together hours before his time arrived. I am an acquaintance to and worked with another actor in the same film. I think this is a doorway to follow in his footsteps. Those in the industry know how hard this profession is, wish the public knew more.

Twenty years from now we’re going to have comments like this but instead it’ll be “inspired by the movie Joker” or “inspired by the show Breaking Bad”
The propensity of mediocre upper-middleclass men to idolize obvious bad guys as renegade anti-heroes is seemingly eternal I guess. Strange reality.

Didn't matter the movie: Tom was always excellent. He became one of the faces that could sell me on whether or not I'd be renting a certain film. The movie could be falling apart, mired in total drudgery, and Tom would still find a way to bring a compelling character to the screen. I was always saddened to hear of his many, many issues. Simple reminder that we're all only human but in that humanity lies both the best of grace and the worst of destructive impulses. I'm actually glad Tom is finally at rest. I think it'd been many years since he'd dreamed kindly.

He was amazing in Twin Peaks. I wish he would've been more concerned about his drug use and physical abuse of people close to him when drugged to the teeth instead of "getting respect from the public." If he had done the first, it would've accomplished the latter. Two birds, one stone. But he should have also given himself more credit as an actor. He was a VERY good actor, and got to work with his idol, Robert De Niro. How many people get to co-star with and befriend their idol? That is success in its own right.
But, as a mentally ill person myself, I understand how insanely hard many, many, mANY of us are on ourselves.

Per your observation on the motives for his namedropping, perhaps (as you may have alluded) Tom saw himself subconsciously as an "everyman" despite saying he identified as a James Dean, and an everyman certainly would feel amazed, proud, and it worth sharing that he knew those people. That's how I feel about things like that, and if your self-esteem has some kind of hitch or condition, or if it's just realistic (he was hardly the most handsome or charismatic of actors, he had to know that at some level early on), he had to know someone like him had in some ways (maybe not lifestyle or relationships) outperformed his destiny given what he came from.

I will say that once people find out uv used.drugs even though they themselves may be hypocrites who use them or worse yet, past drug users who've since quite and adapted that mantle of superiority they all seem to have looking down their nose at you ,and often sliding back later. This said people do look at u as a lesser person when use of drugs is entirely dependent on quantity and frequency of use as is proved by folks like Phillip Seymour Hoffman who garnered an academy award and did his job well in all his movies without attracting any undue attention becuz he didn't overdue it,until that last day unfortunately. He's missed much on the screen by us all. I don't by any means advocate drug use by anyone i Leafly point out that there's a vast gulf between the crack head u see waving back and forth in a breeze while asking u for money on the corner while u await the change of the lite and someone who take an Adderall daily ,which is methamphetamines. Again it's frequency and quantity that are the shapers of ur destiny. I've used meth for 30 years daily but in miniscule amounts and run my company successfully for the.past 22 yrs and I'm now 70 and healthy,i think.lol! I used it becuz of the workload and hours i worked and felt the hand of age on my shoulder. If any young people are reading this and thinking. Heh he did it and it helped him ,don't. Becuz we are different people and i never felt that it was a drug that felt so good i wanted more and thus controlled it rather than the other way around. A rare gift that came in know not where. It's to bad it didn't extend to cocaine as that one almost got me in my early 20's during the epidemic brought on by the US govt. ,but that's an entirely different and irrelevant subject. Im sure some of u wonder, well how much was he using, it was a couple of lines in the morning and maybe another one in late afternoon and they weren't the one like Pacino took of coke in the movie either.

Sizemore was a GREAT actor; he was especially skilled at playing working class, gruff, often dangerous underworld characters. He was similar to Michael Madsen in that respect, but I feel Sizemore brought more nuance and authenticity to those roles, whereas Madsen made his characters more of a caricature.
Sizemore could hold a scene with ANYONE, and when you saw him in a role, you at least knew he'd be interesting and memorable. He was truly one of the great talents of the last few generations; I'll always remember his performances, and I hope he's finally at peace.

So besides his many great acting roles, I'll always appreciate that the most. I even read it again when I eventually got into rehab and began my life of sobriety. There’s a lot more temptation because drugs/alcohol are everywhere and people are offering them to you constantly. I would’ve probably ended up like Michael Jackson if I had his wealth and fame. I’m sorry your friend died but he unapologetically caused chaos and horror for a lot of people. I know plenty of addicts and they don’t terrorize people the way he did. No one ever cares about the damage to the victims 🤦🏽‍♀️ as a victim myself, I understand the years and effort it takes to heal. He had no accountability whatsoever. I was really hoping he'd turn his life around because you could sense he had so much self loathing, vulnerability, anger, and pain. That may have been that certain ingredient he had that made his characters so believable. There aren't very many actors, still actively working, who I actually consistently liked. But he was one of them along with Gene Hackman, Helen Miren, Robert De Niro, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kate Blanchet, Jeremy Irons, Clint Eastwood, Mikael Persbrandt, Judy Dench, and a handful more.
