Although I can appreciate the efforts of those who are trying to do something like a rebuild, I have to say that forums are not the place to get information. What you have on forums is a bunch of unexperienced want to be mechanics who read a book about procedures and think they can give advice now. I've heard the term "drive it like you stole it" a lot of times, but it's incorrect and could have some disastrous long-term effects. The proper procedure for breaking in a freshly rebuilt motor is generally. 1) crank the engine over without the spark plugs and the coils disabled and without the valve cover so you can see the oil filling the top in of your engine. 2) replace the spark plugs and the cover, enable the coil, then fire it up and let it idle for at least 15 minutes without accelerating it. 3) slowly Idol it to about 2000 RPMs and hold it there for approximately 15 minutes, then let it go back to idle again. 4) go on a drive cycle so the computer resets itself for IM readiness on an OBD 2. ( Don't go passed 50 miles an hour) 5) keep track of your mileage because you will need to change the oil at about 50 miles after first startup. 6) continue break in procedure after oil change, still not exceeding 50 miles an hour for the next 450 miles, then change oil again. 7) after second oil change you can now drive it normally and change the oil in about 1500 miles 8) after third and final oil change the break-in period is done and you can follow your owner's manual for routine maintenance of the vehicle.

I owned one of those for 6 yrs, I woke up at night to hate it! Spent all my days off at the garage! EVERYTHING broke on that turd and they never fixed the oil consumptin issue. I have a 98 SW2 with 312000, finally lost a head gasket, and cracked the head. Have motor at machine shop now, polishing the crank and re-ring job only, not even much of a ridge at top of the cylinder. 3000 mile oil changes really work!! I bought a 110k 95 SL base has the sohc for $900. I see why people like these cars so much. So easy to work on and great on gas. Unbeatable car. That reverse slam problem may be an issue with the valve body. The solenoids weren't the only thing it had problems with the whole valve body itself leaked or had issues that's why they would go through them a lot. Thankfully they're very easy to replace. If I ever got another one I would definitely want to manual with the twin cam.
Any car has “easy things to work on”. Example: changing alternator on a GM 3.8 liter. The Saturn S-series has its share of difficult things to work on. Example: clutch change with engine IN the car or PS pump replacement, timing chain replacement ain’t no picnic either.

i accept that my saturn is an absolute piece of balls, but it's MY piece of balls and it taught me how to drive stick so im keeping it and swapping a dual cam in her lol. i love the damn thing some day, SOME day far off into this millennia, people will respect the little plastic tupperware cars that everyone threw away.
If you pour in the oil through the top carefully before putting valve cover on you won't have to do all that, just turn the key. Also, drive in stop and go traffic and vary RPM's. Start at a limit of 3,000, and work your way up and after your 500 mile oil change you can drive it like you stole it.
By the way, I built an oil priming rig for these modern engines with and old oil pump and pickup, a 5 gallon home depot bucket, and some AN fittings and hose. Works like a charm.
All these people asking why rebuild it? Look and see how many miles its got on it. Its reliable cheap transportation and he willl likely get another 100,000 or 200,000 more out the car, provided no corrosion issues. The S-series is seprate from the cars saturn produced after 2000. They do not have the dreaded cvt that died in peoples cars. Also are a lot more reliable.
First saturn wagon I've seen... seriously didn't even know they made one. Your old transmission probably had a bad reverse accumulator, that'll cause that slamming into gear... not softening the clutches.
Hey man, I was wondering how the bottom end of the engine is holding up with those aggressive cams and the professionally rebuilt cylinder head? How many miles have you put on it? I have an 02 SC2, its needing a new head gasket and when I pulled the head it looks like I might be needing a new one. So I was wondering how the rest of the engine would hold up if I was to put a performance head on it.
I used to use a similar way of first getting rid of all the old oil in an engine, then pre-lubing it before I started it. Now I have to pay other people to do it and they never do it as well as I did.
I think drive it like you stole is old skool now. What they recommend is to drive at varying speeds, don't floor it and don't cruise at a constant speed for long. I don't know what other drivers on the road may think but I can guess.
Nexit Next, here in my country the engine rebuilding is a little cheaper cause most of us here use Japan models specially Toyota cause if live here and you have Toyota, the parts are easier to find and the vehicle is a bit more reliable...

your supposed to get the rpms up when the engine cranks mate, dont let it idle. The rings proabably havent sealed and expect future problems with your engine.

I really liked this video. It is very informative and your narration is easy to follow. Those little engines are decent engines but I have to say the station wagon I had SW1 I think if all 2 passengers were in the back and 2 up front the engine didn't really like to pull that much weight around and you could forget going up a hill. GM made the only station wagon that worked it's best with only one person in it. lol

@@1FAST91SONOMA Yeah, on top of his being single cam, it is a wagon that is heavier. Even the SC1's, 2's, were a little heavier. The lightest Saturn cars were the SL1 and SL2 model cars. I got a donor 5 speed for mine to swap into my 1995 DOHC SL2. I know this video is old, and I prey that I don't get hit or rear ended cause I'm going .20 over forged rods, and port and polished head, 14-15 PSI turbo, aftermarket ECM, the whole 9 yards...lol
All the Saturn S series are great cars but after owning two SL models it was nice to get a sport SC 2 model recently the engine has a bit more pep to it.
the idle seemed to be adjusted up to 1200 rpm... to me as a mechanic, the idle should only be at least 900 to 1000... idling it a little higher on a newly rebuild engine could stress the parts and damage quickly during break in...
I'm curious about your oil consumption and any leakage problems also. I'm currently rebuilding an 02 twin cam motor for my wife's 96 sl2. About 1 year ago, I replaced all the gaskets in a 100k single cam motor for my 02 sl and after only 20k miles, had some bad oil leakage where the head, front cover, and top cover meet. I think it was because I didn't seal and install the front and top covers at the same time. There was a few days between.

my Saturn has the transmission kick when.its in reverse problem too. is it because there isn't enough oil going Into the torque converter or is it a bad trans?
Michael Hunt don’t know if you still have the car but when a Saturn s series gets the reverse slam issue, it’s just a loose nut on one of the gears. It can be easily fixed by removing the side transmission cover and simply tightening the nut.
Good job man i bought my first stick a 1995 saturn sl and its great. This was bout 2 months ago. The interior was wrecked i restored it. Bout to make an exhaust for it. Did a bunch of stuff under the hood but its ok i love working on cars. Put new spark plugs. Wires. Tpc. Iac. Cleaned throttle body. Valve cover gasket. Intake gasket. Radiator fan motor and relay. Temp sensor. Coolant flush. Oil change. Painted valve cover. New battery. Top motor mount. Etc i might put a stage two clutch in her and new pistons racing kind so i can turbo it. What do u think.
I would not suggest turning the engine over with no plugs in it. It gives the opportunity for fod to be introduced into the combustion chamber. It might have worked out just fine for you this time. But I still would not suggest it. That's just me. It's your car and do as u like. I would have added about a half quart of marvel to the oil.
Fckin saturns are logs of shit with wheel strapped on. That being said, that engine sounded VERY nice! I probably would bet that it runs better now than it did brand new!
I had a 1995 Saturn SL2 with the 1.9 twin Cam I got 318000 miles out of that car before I sold it and the only reason it blew up after I sold it was because my Uncle let it run out of oil
Meanwhile if you LOOK AT THE CAR MANUAL it will TELL YOU the breaking in procedure. They ALL DO. And what it says is to NOT TOW and NOT DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT and also to keep varying your rpm level. So the BEST move is your average start stop traffic in light traffic in an area with traffic lights, round abouts and mergers NOT flogging the hell out of it. How have YOU NOT seen this in the standard car manuals that are left in the glovebox?
most likely there are two belt sizes you can get for this engine, a shorter one for cars that didnt have Ac, and a larger one for models that do. If the Ac doesnt work or leaks, no need to spend extra $ on the bigger belt to drive the compressor.
You might wanna check on ebay, they have a lot of nice motors on there that have anywhere 40xxx miles to 60xxx on them that's if you got an import. Like my toyota paseo you have a lot of swap options like a 1.3 turbo 4efte which a lot of people go that way. But again just depend on what you have
you can also find low mileage engines in a junk yard if you dont mind work. But most of the time if you want it new and clean just go to a parts store they can order one for you.
Reverse slam... You mean treating the car like shit and not coming to a complete stop before shifting into reverse slam. :P stick shift is love stick shift is life.
Everyone knows that slow drive low rpm is a bad brake in procedure as the parts will not set in properly trust me after building few v8 i know what works. A good brake in is mid rpms you should somewhere up to 4000 rpm so you do city driving as it will put more stress and get those parts to seat in right. I say spirit driving in normal way no red lining just mild spirit driving. Every engine i rebuild is over 100k with 95% compression
Drive like you stole on a newly built engine is how you end up breaking it again. If you get an official copy of the owners manual im pretty sure it would say keep the engine under a certain speed as well as below a certain rpm, and do not jack rabbit start from stop.

Frosty Fox they sure are. I have a 96 SL2 that I bought because I hate it. It's so ugly I can't make it look good. So slow I can't make it fast (well... That's not actually true. I could LS swap it. Been done before. I don't want to though) so it's perfect for someone like me who loves to build and tinker. My daily driver doesn't get messed with. My project cars and trucks can be down for all the time they need and I can still get to work. That's the whole point of these cars

i just rebuilt one of these and there i sstill smoke from tailpipe after 10 mins of running, is this normal residual burn off or is there a bigger problem?

You rebuilt the entire engine so I was pretty confident that it would fire. An engine only wants to do 1 things and that is simply run.

I think the rebuild of the engine is more expensive then the car is worth.

It sounds like the bottom end knocks on start up. How many times did you prime it with the starter turning it over and how long was each duration?

Don't be surprised if they burn oil up the wazoo until the rings seat and the valves gum up. Usually around 10qts or so after first run

my Saturn has the transmission kick when.its in reverse problem too. is it because there isn't enough oil going Into the torque converter or is it a bad trans?

Michael Hunt don’t know if you still have the car but when a Saturn s series gets the reverse slam issue, it’s just a loose nut on one of the gears. It can be easily fixed by removing the side transmission cover and simply tightening the nut.
Are the Twin Cam engines better than the efi/ohc ones?

Good job man i bought my first stick a 1995 saturn sl and its great. This was bout 2 months ago. The interior was wrecked i restored it. Bout to make an exhaust for it. Did a bunch of stuff under the hood but its ok i love working on cars. Put new spark plugs. Wires. Tpc. Iac. Cleaned throttle body. Valve cover gasket. Intake gasket. Radiator fan motor and relay. Temp sensor. Coolant flush. Oil change. Painted valve cover. New battery. Top motor mount. Etc i might put a stage two clutch in her and new pistons racing kind so i can turbo it. What do u think.
Still got to put new a.c compressor. Alternator and pully.
If you want to turbo it you'll probably want new rods and pistons. Pistons will go pretty far in their own but I'd do both.

I would not suggest turning the engine over with no plugs in it. It gives the opportunity for fod to be introduced into the combustion chamber. It might have worked out just fine for you this time. But I still would not suggest it. That's just me. It's your car and do as u like. I would have added about a half quart of marvel to the oil.
But why go threw all this for a Saturn?

That being said, that engine sounded VERY nice! I probably would bet that it runs better now than it did brand new!
You need to put a timing belt of else you will kill that battery or mess something on the pump
I had a 1995 Saturn SL2 with the 1.9 twin Cam I got 318000 miles out of that car before I sold it and the only reason it blew up after I sold it was because my Uncle let it run out of oil
Meanwhile if you LOOK AT THE CAR MANUAL it will TELL YOU the breaking in procedure. They ALL DO. And what it says is to NOT TOW and NOT DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT and also to keep varying your rpm level. So the BEST move is your average start stop traffic in light traffic in an area with traffic lights, round abouts and mergers NOT flogging the hell out of it. How have YOU NOT seen this in the standard car manuals that are left in the glovebox?

most likely there are two belt sizes you can get for this engine, a shorter one for cars that didnt have Ac, and a larger one for models that do. If the Ac doesnt work or leaks, no need to spend extra $ on the bigger belt to drive the compressor.

You might wanna check on ebay, they have a lot of nice motors on there that have anywhere 40xxx miles to 60xxx on them that's if you got an import. Like my toyota paseo you have a lot of swap options like a 1.3 turbo 4efte which a lot of people go that way. But again just depend on what you have
you can also find low mileage engines in a junk yard if you dont mind work. But most of the time if you want it new and clean just go to a parts store they can order one for you.
That is the dedication to one shifty car.

2L8 iwon 500 mile filter for break in... No need for some fancy filter for that short time
Everyone knows that slow drive low rpm is a bad brake in procedure as the parts will not set in properly trust me after building few v8 i know what works. A good brake in is mid rpms you should somewhere up to 4000 rpm so you do city driving as it will put more stress and get those parts to seat in right. I say spirit driving in normal way no red lining just mild spirit driving. Every engine i rebuild is over 100k with 95% compression

Drive like you stole on a newly built engine is how you end up breaking it again. If you get an official copy of the owners manual im pretty sure it would say keep the engine under a certain speed as well as below a certain rpm, and do not jack rabbit start from stop.

im on saturnfans.com too, i had to name my car satrina, now she is deader than a broke bolt in the valve cover that some idiot decided to getout with easy out and ended having to get a bigger titainium bolt due to ythe easy out tap broke.

Frosty Fox they sure are. I have a 96 SL2 that I bought because I hate it. It's so ugly I can't make it look good. So slow I can't make it fast (well... That's not actually true. I could LS swap it. Been done before. I don't want to though) so it's perfect for someone like me who loves to build and tinker. My daily driver doesn't get messed with. My project cars and trucks can be down for all the time they need and I can still get to work. That's the whole point of these cars

i just rebuilt one of these and there i sstill smoke from tailpipe after 10 mins of running, is this normal residual burn off or is there a bigger problem?
+ltethan649 go to autozone an get a new pcv valve there only like $4 an and will cause the car to smoke like mad if stuck an if that don't clear it up that sucks but well it was only 4 bucks
