Not as versatile as the piano though. Rather more like a saxophone that sounds fantastic when played in the genre most suited to it, and not so good outside of that. @@tdb517 Perhaps not quite as nuanced, but it does have dynamics. The dynamics are that which you must create, without relying on pedals. You use careful placement of rubato and ornaments, trills, and other techniques. I first heard this over fifty years ago, and it bowls me over every time I hear it. Utter, thrilling excitement! Great rendition by these very talented musicians.
I don't think low strings were standardized yet. Cellos could have 4-6 strings. There was a slightly bigger cello in France called the basse de violon, tuned a step lower than a 4-string cello. The bass viola da gamba was still used for continuo and it had a solo repertoire, Double basses had 3 or 4 strings and a different tuning in Vienna... I'm not sure where or how commonly 5-strings were employed.
What marvellous performance! I had never heard this work until today, and it has amazed me. I thought I had developed a reasonable knowledge of Bach’s creative genius - then a performance like this makes me realise how much I have still to learn?? 11:17

The strings have melodic material much of the time. The variety of different lengths of detached notes makes for a particular delight in this performance. Harpsichord textures are also engaging. There cannot be too much of either keyboards or strings.

Classical pieces hit different when played on the instrument they were written on.
now imagine if it was played in the original temperment and hz
I first heard this over fifty years ago, and it bowls me over every time I hear it. Utter, thrilling excitement! Great rendition by these very talented musicians.
MY kind of music! Wow- a 5-string double bass. Haven’t seen one of those before in a symphony group before.
I'm a simple person.
I see 3 harpsichords.
I click.
What marvellous performance! I had never heard this work until today, and it has amazed me. I thought I had developed a reasonable knowledge of Bach’s creative genius - then a performance like this makes me realise how much I have still to learn?? 11:17
Should've had better camera angles of the harpsichord players' hands.
Couldn’t agree more.
Agreed. An odd focus on the strings. Cameras weren't arranged to properly capture the harpsichordists' performances.
Yup, unconventional keyboard view, what gives?
I understand your guys' thinking
but as a musician, I get much more of a sense
of the payers' emotion by their arms, torso and faces
Their concentration, their feelings : )
Yeah, unusually limited, given the incredible production quality of the Netherlands Bach Society videos!!! Oh, well.
So glad to find this, all I can ever find is for pianos! Would love to see more of the keyboard fingers and less of the accompaniment bows.
The strings have melodic material much of the time. The variety of different lengths of detached notes makes for a particular delight in this performance. Harpsichord textures are also engaging. There cannot be too much of either keyboards or strings.
@@michaelfriedmann2327 True enough, no argument there. I'm a keyboard student, so naturally gravitate to the finger technique.
Il est incroyable ce Bach ! Un concerto pour 3 clavecins enveloppés dans un rideau de cordes ! on le voit comme un "pépère" mais c'était un avant-gardiste d'une originalité éblouissante !
The Siciliano is so delightful! The video here is a great presentation!
No one:
Bach: *writes concerto for three harpsichords*
Mozart
I think this is a concerto composed by someone else that Bach just arranged for harpsichord. Bach did that a lot especially with the music of Vivaldi.
@@Oceananswer hey i find your reply really interesting, would you give me some reference of what you said in any book? I want to read more.about it , thanks a lot in advance
people really got to stop with this kind of humor
Yes! Hold my wine and watch this 😏
Incredible musicianship
second movement was brilliant with the altered stops of the harpsichords... what a great and unique rendition. Thank you
redbrian3655 Alla Siciliana
Bach is so incredibly genius. In this Concerto, I especially love the section between 5:29 and 6:45 It's like walking into the realm of Heaven.
My deepest gratitude for this gem! Best performance of this concerto I have heard and superb quality. Thanks to you I’m now binging on Bach the whole night.
So lovely to see all the musicians gathered together in a small group. After months of listening to "all of Bach" they look like old friends.
🎵 Your musical prowess is truly awe-inspiring! 🎹 The melodies are enchanting, the harmonies are spellbinding, and the rhythm is pure magic. Your talent is a gift to the ears! 🎼👌
The more I know and listen to Bach's work, the more admirable it is for me.
Playing the orchestral score with string soloists solve the problem to hear a soloist harpsichord concerting with a full orchestra.
This is not just 'All of Bach'...it is the very best of Bach! I never knew the proper location of my 'solar plexus' until I started following this channel. Now I feel it reverberate in synchrony ~ with the music.
I cannot stop listening at this concert. Its radiant beauty fascinates me. Specially the second movement. Thank you, NBS for such an excellent performance!
I like the 3rd movement the most
These three harpsichord sets are unreal, I love it.
Weer een PRACHTIGE UITVOERING! wauw. Wat zijn jullie ongelooflijk goed.
The middle harpsichord player has some cracking expressions especially at 3:40...heart and soul....brill!
Outstanding performance. Thanks with all my heart to Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Shunske Sato and all Netherlands Bach Society
A concerto for three harpsichords is one of those things that sounds great in theory.
Music lifted up to heaven. Exquisite.
At this level of expertise, it almost seems effortless
What a gorgeous concerto, such superb musicians and what a joy it is to watch the expressions on the conductor/harpsichordist's face. Thank you for uploading this, and also for such amazing audio!
The dynamics of each of the strings is simply amazing--a great contrast to the unstoppable force of the 3 harpsichords.
These is really great. I am learning a new piece for the harpsichord. It is a beautiful instrument. Thank you for sharing this video.
Great interpretation of J.S. Bach's great concerto,Bachs unique music takes you to a travel in outer space....
I am so thankful for this performance. I had largely ignored this wonderful piece, what with all the egregious piano versions out there, but now I listen attentively and even follow along with a mini score that I bought. Especially challenging Cembalo 1, that must have been Sebastian’s part!
I picture Bach and two sons playing this.
RESPECT, this is just extraordinary.
God blessed Bach’s hands, mind and soul to write this masterpiece
I've been looking for a great live performance of this for a long time. I finally found it
I keep finding myself re-listening to this again and again!
Oh my god the first piece haves such energy, its brathe taking
It has been too long since I last listened to Bach. Thank you.
The 3rd movement is a marvel ! Thank you
No matter how deeply you delve into Bach, there are always deeper depths to explore.
Before electricity, we made use of metal wires! Huge music to fill the room with strings and resonating boxes!
Except the period instruments strings would most likely have been made of animal guts.
@@thedoghouse4203 harpsichords used wire, as did bandoras, chitarras battente in Italy, and harps in Ireland. Guts all around, otherwise. Overspun gut bass strings came on the scene in the 1680s, if we can believe Thomas Mace.
I appreciate being allowed to see the performance and also being allowed to hear it.
Thank you :)
Astounding ! Truly astonishing. The great godBach!
Good heavens! I have several recordings of this piece, on both modern and original instruments. But this version, with the diminished orchestral numbers, produces a completely different concerto, with marvelous interplay of the musical lines. The recording technique also complements the players.
Fantastic! Well done, NBS!
If we could give expression to our highest ideals, something similar as what Bach composed should come out
MUSIC played beautifully, thank you very much.
This is sensational. I am so impressed with it, and the speed of hands across the keyboard
A lifetime is not enough for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach & THANK YOU !!!
Bach, after his fourth shot of espresso: three...... tHrEe...!!!! THREE HARPSICHORDS!!!!!!!
:-) ruclips.net/video/MojU8uh4Sno/видео.html
Only four shots of espresso? Imagine what he could do with ten shots under his belt!
esatto, si suonava nel bar
He probably had wayyy more than 3 😂😂
The Netherlands Bach Society is just what I need on a day when I got nothing to do other then enjoy wonderful music. I find it very nice that there are still some places that play the harpsichord.
This is just gorgeous.
The middle harpsichordist/conductor! Yeah buddy. That's how it's done. To see such joy and love of the music in your expressions is like a breath of fresh air. Or several.
Amó Bach, Amó a sus apasionados intérpretes y por supuesto a Netherlands
Bach Society.
cuánta belleza vivo en cada nota mil gracias. desde México.
This was my favourites piece from 20 years ago, never thought I would watch this live version. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece.
When you stop to consider the intellect of Bach’s brain, to conceive pieces such as this, and be able to communicate it to one and all one can’t help but admire and envy his natural musical gifts. He truly was a musical genius!
norman-m [KANDAGAIGO] Yes his offspring definitely received some excellent genes!
can we take a second to appreciate how awesome the violin with the light wood neck looks?
I'm just 16 and I'm completely in love with this stuff
Jose’s Garage That’s where my love for Bach started. One of the first recordings I heard was a performance of James Last (can you believe it) of the slow part of the double violin concerto. Then I discovered Leonhardt and Ton Koopman. Also the Weihnachtsoratorium for which we had to cycle 10 km through a cold winter. The church had real candles. I loved it. Enjoy the journey.
Good Jose keep it up cose it 's a live long fabulous and happy journey!
Good for you! You've started early on :)
Sameee
I'm a fetus and I love this music.
So, did you realize it? Only 3 strings as part of a "person" of a chamber orchestra and 2 basso continous in "person" of a cello and a double bass. Yes, I said "person" because in this interpretation all the parties are like personalities. Now add 3 harpsichords and feel the balance between mother-father-kids inside this family crowned like champions through brilliant video solutions. So, did you realize it? Simply All of Bach💝
