This Concerto is the op. 3 No 10 (for 4 violins) by Antonio Vivaldi. The version reproduced here is a transcription made by J. S. Bach for 4 keyboards. It should be presented as Vivaldi - Bach concerto .
Bach, like all of his contemporaries, took musical ideas from other composers and used them. In the 21st century, we might think of this as stealing IP. But not in Bach’s day. This work is not Vivaldi’s Concerto for four violins. It’s Bach’s Concerto for Four Harpsichords in A minor, BWV 1065. Check it out on IMSLP. The real debate should be about whether it’s appropriate to perform it on four pianos. And on this question, I’m happy to listen to either version.
Absolutely wonderful! Truly fantastic! Thank you so much for uploading. Bach has always been one of my all time favourites and the playing on this is outstanding!
I’ve heard and compared many string and keyboard versions and in my opinion this one is for me the very best version of Vivaldi’s masterpiece. By now i’ve listened to it over 100 times. It is wonderful for doing morning stretches, pushups, and dancing with 10 pound weights in each hand when one is 85 years old. Try it, you won’t be able to keep yourself still. It is, literally, very moving music!
Such amazing talent in one room. Bach himself played this, who were his other pianists, it must have been daunting to say the least. He wrote this for himself, of course. Great work. Great performance. Such gifted musicians. All.
The manuscript actually came from Vivaldi, & was probably written for Violin: Bach’s employer was very keen on the Italian style, & gave Bach several pieces for him to orchestrate for the instruments available…Bach saw the future, & it was the Piano (hence the masterwork - the 48 preludes & fugues, which allowed any keyboard instrument to be tuned & played with equality) It’s interesting, that for over a century, Vivaldi’s name was expunged from church records (he was an excommunicated priest) & all public works: It was during the great Bach Revival - headed by Mendelssohn -that music scholars began cataloguing Bach’s vast musical output:among the manuscripts were some pieces signed A Vivaldi - thus, the hunt was on for this mysterious - & obviously gifted person: once again, the sheer volume of work was yet to be discovered - even ‘The Four Seasons’ wasn’t performed until the 20th century - quite a while after the invention of elevators… Poor Snr Antonio died in poverty after travelling to Vienna to seek out a patron: Noblemen who were happy to purchase his work during ‘the Grand Tour’, with Venice in its Heyday, now found ‘a Guinea for every piece’ quite beyond their means… Such was the end for many - it’s hard for us to imagine that the ravishing music of Bach et al went ‘out of fashion’… Georg Friedrich Handel did alright - but that’s another story… 🙏🏻💔🙏🏽

❤The middle part sounds like a murmuring creek (Bach’s name!). I bet this idea crossed Bach’s mind when he decided to make this transcription since such unique sound is not possible on the violins. But his early Piano et forte could make such bubbly sound similar to today’s pianos. This makes it the superb jewel of piano sonorities! Bravissimo to performers! Best recording of the piece!
I don't really know if it's (the other versions I heard) the recording mic making the sound muddy. But as I said, this version sparkles, the best interpretation I discovered so far.
Arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach for 4 solo harpsichords (and later for 4 solo pianos) and string orchestra in A minor of this concerto by Antonio Vivaldi originally composed in B minor for 4 solo violins and string orchestra.
3:44 - 7:06 this is why Bach made this clavier transcription: he used special shimmering sonority available on newly emerging hammer clavier PIANO ET FORTE that is not possible in violins
Delightful composition friends, a very nice lesson of human civilization, when Bach is capable to express such a sincere admiration towards Vivaldi and his four violins concerto gets this new version on pianos, yeah, we have to learn a lot from these giants, what a great composition indeed, delightful, both, on violins or keyboards
