A moment of silence for LG and HTC. It's always a shame when a company exits the market. But I can't say I never saw that coming. Given their recent endeavour, they were doomed to fail.

@@gkravi2841 yes I meant their marketing. Silly me, I wasn't clear enough. But yeah, I had high expectations for their Velvet series. And the LG Wing, while it attempts to solve a problem that doesn't exist, was a very very cool concept that portrayed a very bold company, which normally attract investors and such. Sadly, that didn't happen.

@@gkravi2841 HTC has a special place in my heart. I own an HTC One M9 -- it's now in my drawer collecting dust -- and despite its fundamental flaws, I loved this phone to bits. Currently I'm using LG G7 and I bought it because I had G4 before and I loved it and at the time LG was promising that they'll be focusing on the software and it was bad indeed. Well it's now clear what was the outcome of this but prior the announcement that they'll be stepping away from this market the software support still sucked just like before. I had to, almost, put an Android 9 "illegally", using their crappy tool due to some regional bs that was preventing a normal upgrade of the OS. Later I heard that there'll be Android 10 for the G7 series but I didn't bother to go through the same crap in order to update my OS which should be happening just with a few taps... So I guess the thing that contributed the most for the LG demise from the mobile segment was their poor software support.

    • @utkarsharyan
      @utkarsharyan 2 года назад +42

I would've put Samsung into C tier because their outlook looks pretty bad for these reasons:
      1. Apple is their biggest competitor and has been rampaging lately.
      2. Samsung failed to capture Huawei's share after it busted. Samsung's share didn't even grow. In these circumstances you just must grow.
      3. It seems like Samsung's lead in foldables is also temporary while it could have been their long term comeback.
      4. No way they are in the same tier as BBK brands. BBK are growing and catching up with momentum while Samsung is unable to amp up the lead they have. And It's not like this is new for Samsung and are yet to react. They have been in this state for ~3 years and had time to push back with full force. That's exactly what they did and they fighting back okay I guess, but it's clear in the long term it is not enough.
What else is there for Samsung to do now? It seems like they've done everything, but the competition will inevitably overtake them...

The problem became their software updates or lack thereof, mostly I think, especially the bricking on the G4, poor support of the G3, I had colleagues who suffered through on both models, that left a sour taste on people and a big warning to would be buyers. The other thing with phones that are different (this applies irrespective of OEM) is that as exciting as they are for people who wants to see something different, no one buys them when they become available due to fears of poor software support (always) for their unique form factor. We use to have a lot of form factors, remember the camera-centric Samsung Galaxy S line, their rugged S versions with tactile buttons, there were always lower purchase numbers and therefore no software updates to speak of, sadly.

Even Xiaomi's whole A-class strategy is about having a bad phone business, and individual iPhones don't need to make that much profit when the ecosystem is the real killer. One thing about Apple that nobody mentions is how they now REALLY leverage their dominance in the US market. Most Software comes from the US and thus targets Apple hardware first and foremost, most Celebrities use iPhones just because its the most popular premium phone in the US and of course to some extent they don't have to fear the U.S. Government snapping them out of existence like all the Chinese brands.
Its crazy to me that they still managed to dodge all the lawsuits this year. Really only overconfidence and building a too obvious monopoly can put a dent in their bottom line.

Their Fold 3 and their Flip 3 have been a major breakthrough in the market (even though I would still argue that the Oppo Find N is overall functionally better than the Flip 3). And so far their Exynos 2100 holds up pretty well against the S888. Even better, their next Exynos chip will feature an AMD GPU so things look quite promising. Even their software update policy has improved significantly and you can't turn a blind eye to that. It's more of a B+ or A- to me. B just seems a bit too harsh. I know OP has fallen from what they used to be for the hardcore fans, but hardcore fans hardly make a business, the margins are so low on phones than the BOMs usualy suggest, this makes it very important for companies to move millions of phones. I'm asking because OP managed to get itself sold in stores by cellphone carriers, that is one of the reasons for super high sales of Samsung and Apple phones, it makes it that much easier for people to buy a phone even if the loud techie voices don't approve.

Thanks for the comparison. In addition, a lot of people would be interested in your take on the user experience of different brands, instead of business competence (market share, advertizing, availability etc), say parameters like:
    1. Amount of Crapware/bloatware
    2. UI/UX quality
    3. Privacy/surveillance
    4. Updates
    5. Bootloader unlockability (dev support)
etc (perhaps later comments about pricing)
For example, if you talk about Samsung it'd be nice to mention One UI Core, which has a horrific amount of nagware.
The idea is, once you buy the device knowing it's specs, already having experienced their marketing, how's it like to use the phone, as a means to incentivize fewer anti-consumer practices of which many have become the norm by most OEMs.

I love Motorola phones. Their mid tier phones are affordable, and their OS is not as bloated as other companies. The only downside for me is the fingerpeint reader, I found it a bit unconfortable at the back (and in my case literally fell apart after two years of use).

What a nonsensical ranking.. Apple in S and Samsung in B.. you telling me Samsung is not even competing with Apple?Samsung has solid flagships that compete with anything from Apple and mid-tier offerings that are doing well. You can't in the same breathe praise Apple in that they may produce a foldable phone while ignoring the fact that Samsung already has these and is doing well in that category! I call BS

  • @deanstyles2567
    @deanstyles2567 2 года назад +3

I'd probably put Samsung in the A tier, their Galaxy A range generally seems pretty decent, even if it's not price competitive with the Chinese brands (less of an issue in a market like here in Australia where most buy on contracts). Four years of software support for a midrange phone would have been unheard of a few years ago.

Fairphone is still a very niche brand with virtually no impact in overall mobile industry. According to their website they sold nearly 95000 devices this year and are planning to double that this year.
Companies like apple and Samsung sells more devices per day.
For example, apple sells nearly 200 million iPhones every year, i.e , nearly 600k per day.
