Fortunately there are easily accessible science papers on topic.

However I don't think meaning itself strengthens our memories but it makes us more likely to recall the meaningful information later on. recall or retrieval is what strengthens our memories, that is most of our memories. Hundreds of studies have been conducted showing a robust retrieval effect. The Dunlosky meta-analysis shows this to be the case.
