I like how MIT is like "we can literally make our lectures free to watch and it'll have no negative impact on our admissions because we're just that good."
I believe they also had some legal affair against some people who gave free access to some of their academic stuff... so they are not exactly handing out free knowledge, in fact they are more like a gatekeeper if anything...

This is just one of over 3500 comments, but I genuinely want to say thanks to MIT, Nancy and everyone working behind the scenes to give us access to high level education for free. I'm deeply grateful and will now watch the whole course. I graduated in molecular biology long ago, but after my studies a passion for psychology and neuroscience emerged - with videos like these I feel like I can go back to university, even though I'm now working full-time. A heartfelt thank you!

The Bible says in John 3:16-36 that whoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ shall not perish but have everlasting life, the Bible also says in Romans 10:9 that those who declare with their mouth that Jesus Christ is their God, Lord, and Savior they shall be saved. Revelation 1:8 says that Jesus is the alpha and the omega. Luke and revelation is the ending times, and Jesus is returning back. So are you going to submit your life to him or no? Narrow is the path that leads to the gates of heaven, but only few people find it. The gates that is the path to destruction is where many people find it! Jesus loves you SO MUCH! That he died on the cross, and was resurrected from the dead 3 days later to give us eternal life.
Every single professor in the world deserves to have their field of passion shared by them like this and every other human deserves to access it for free. For humanity.
Sometimes privilege it's not something indifferent to a certain people but it is something that some people deserve, and we watching this class is the best example of it. Not all the people around the world would see it, they never will, but us and people that was present in that class
i understand what you're saying, but it's a bit more complex than just the love for a curriculum.. for starters, most of us weren't that interested in school as teenagers and it's easier to 'blame' the teachers for it. the pupils also play a role in the teacher's enthusiasm, yes? :}

I was watching videos on recycling Kitty litter containers & when one was over this started playing! I do watch all sorts of videos on RUclips. Just last night I had a dream that turned into a nightmare. Visiting friends, then next day going on a footpath unable to remember their names or how to get there by the road. While on the path I realized it was to difficult for my mother since it was all going up a steep hill. My mother has been dead for over 29 years. She could not understand why I didn't know their names. In my dream state, & as I woke up, I worried about talking to my doctor about dementia/ Alzheimer's. I'm a high school graduate with one college course, 72 & alone without family support. I've also got a left frontal meningioma that I refused surgery on 15+ years ago due to my allergies to metals, including titanium & medical staples. The doctors said I would be dead within 2 years without the surgery. Unsolicited advice of a medical psychic, which I did not believe in at the time, I stopped eating foods with additives, preservatives & dyes & the tumor stopped growing as well as the horrific headaches that I had suffered for decades stopped. The extent of my allergy was demonstrated when in June 2014 I had three medical pins put in my broken wrist & I immediately developed Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) with my entire arm including arm socket on fire & swelling from double to quadruple in size. Gabapentin was a blessed relief. When I followed the advice of my chiropractor & also acupuncturist who told me to stop eating gluten I was able to stop taking the gabapentin just like they said. The tiniest bit of gluten sets off the Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. I also have central sleep apnea, diagnosed in my early fifties with the doctor saying I've probably had it all my life based on my history. I would love it if I could help for my brain through a good clinic!

Crazy that the majority of this was done in the last 1 year. That paper she mentioned was coauthored by Geoffery Hinton who recently *left* Google because of how rapidly AI was growing. Wow! Denial is also a very powerful human experience. My friend just passed away from cancer and in retrospect I was ignoring some very basic observations about his condition. I thought he was just in the hospital getting treatment for pneumonia when in reality he had lung cancer. I downplayed the importance of the lump they found in his lung when they found a lump on his shoulder. I thought a lump on the shoulder was serious but treatable and totally focused on that rather than the lung! When I found out he died I was like oh shit! Of course! It’s really hard to remain objective when you love someone.

I don't know how I happened upon this lecture - initially on my smartphone. I migrated to my laptop to add a comment. That opening anecdotal story about her friend with the lime-size benign tumor in the brain really piqued my attention. It made me think of how many of us - myself included- are so very visual. On the other hand, I learned how some people have aphantasia and others lack internal monologues. It seemed to me her friend lost the ability to create internal visual maps. I suppose he would have a hard time navigating himself out of a hedge maze - which would be difficult enough for most people. Much of that function would rely on a strong visual memory and recall. Over the years, I've come to realize how most of us start out thinking that everyone is like ourselves internally - that most of us experience the world in the same way. It gradually dawns on us that we have individual differences - some more stark than others. For instance, people with superior autobiographical memories probably learned early on that their memory skills were NOT like those of most other people. However, if your memory recall is still fairly superior but does not stand out as starkly, it would take you a llittle longer to realize that if at all.

When you found Bob unresponsive and unaware on the floor, he most likely had an unwitnessed epileptic seizure. Even after surgery and tumor removal many people continue having seizures. That article on imagenet classification was cited 107,000 times since the time at which that photo was taken @35:34. That's mindblowing. Wish we had all these opencourseware lectures when I was younger. The amount of knowledge and questions I could've actively been pondering before even entering undergrad would've given me so much more reason to excel in my studies in order to be able to research these topics sooner. You only get so much time and mental plasticity to learn as much as you can, if not all that one can.
This is a great comment, as you point out we get only so much time to learn, meaning we could not over a lifetime go over the millions of examples that a deep net uses to learn, but still we learn. Also we don’t use anything approaching the kilowatts of energy that deep net require so it’s evident that they are not doing anything similar to the brain. Maybe studying the human brain could revolutionize AI and not evolve the current AI?
One beautiful line from the lecture Studying the biological properties of brain without considering the mental function its implements would be like studying the physical properties of a book without considering the meaning of its text .
The opportunity to this quality of education is the saddest part of the under privileged. Thank you for sharing this video for we can aspire ! It’s been such a beautiful experience this lecture !
I don't agree with you on that and I will explain why. I have been taking courses of this quality on youtube (Stanford,Yale etc) and other platforms (Utunes)since 2006-07. Anyone with access to a slow internet connection and a pc could have this experiences for more than a decade! What I find sad is to have people today talking about "new age consciousness" and all this woo while they can educate themselves without needing any special privileges...just a cell phone and an open wifi.
The saddest part of the "under privileged" is such terminology was created by the modern diploma mill system as the system expanded to accommodate mass market lowered standards for debt creation. The basics of math/chemistry/physics aka the foundation of education have been free to all even before the internet, all you needed was a library card. Big companies like Meta (Facebook company was renamed 'Meta' in case you didn't know), Google etc do track you to give you personalised ads, ok? That's it. Your phones don't hear you and the things you say, myths do spread like wildfire and just want to clear this up :)

And if you remain objective and are focused on the main problem, you're called robot, monster and other negative stuff. I'm feeling with you.
Very powerful but so common. I suppose there is a reason it's considered one of the many stages of grief.

Love that she included some tips on how to read scientific papers! It would have been really helpful to whomever who needs to read or write one.
I'm an undergraduate engineering student majoring in mechatronics and waiting to do my PhD in neural engineering one day, thanks million times to MIT for doing these Open courses, this is such an unbelievable chance for the people who are interested in this subject to learn that from MIT

I can listen to her all day. Amazing prof!
I'm kinda curious about her scarf it looks like neurons, and her trousers are a kind of tyrian purple? When you're that amazing and incredible do you also buy into neuro dyes or you just go to mossimo in the mall and get any thing that you feel comfortable with....
I just stumbled onto your Intro to the Human Brain while browsing RUclips tonight and found it quite fascinating! I'm not a medical student but I'm a data technician for the ACT Study (Adult Changes in Human Thought/Dementia/Dr. Crane/Dr. Erickson/UW/KP) in Seattle, WA. I've an art degree but have always been fascinated by neuropsychiatry, psychology, etc. so I am familiar with a lot of what you're discussing. I enjoyed listening to you tonight. I'm sure there has been even more amazing advances in the past almost 3 years since this lecture. Jenny
Hello, how are you doing? Hope you’re having a wonderful day!
I love MIT. I don’t belong in a university that amazing. I worked with 4 graduates. Smart and laid back and humble. I was pushy and driven trying to keep up. Mad respect!
This was phenomenal 👏. It rekindled my love for neuroscience and neuropsychology. The way she dissected the course and details about it for comprehension is just mind blowing. She just became one of my favourite people of all time.

When you found Bob unresponsive and unaware on the floor, he most likely had an unwitnessed epileptic seizure. Even after surgery and tumor removal many people continue having seizures. Seizures coming from mesial temporal lobes are often associated with spacing out, zoning out and "being out to lunch". I hope Bob has seen an epileptologist and is seizure free. Thanks for the wonderful lecture!
How is it possible that I'm sitting in this class... this is so surreal.. incredible, thank you beyond words can express!

Thank you for this opportunity, never think I can get course from MIT like this. Greetings from Indonesia 🇮🇩
The way Bob navigates sounds like how I've navigated my whole life.
Same 😅
But you're Batman wtf
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."
@@mrliam303 Do you believe in Science?
Same i have dyspraxia 😔
One beautiful line from the lecture
Studying the biological properties of brain without considering the mental function its implements would be like studying the physical properties of a book without considering the meaning of its text .
I don't know how many years, two or three years have passed since I watched this wonderful lecture, and now I found it
The opportunity to this quality of education is the saddest part of the under privileged.
This is just entertainment of "popular science", all the pesky details of math and chemistry just missing.

love this! I'm a physics major and I want to go on to work in neuroscience. I had no clue where to start learning and then found this. learning through MIT is an amazing opportunity.
There's a course on Coursera " Synapses, Neurons, Brain" by Dr. Idan Segev. Some modules are physics based. My background is Biotechnology and I seriously enjoyed It.

I am CS student hopefully going to be researcher in intersection of computer systems and brain .This course is just amazing
The luck of a guy like me with a GED getting this kind of information! What a Time to be Alive.
I am 16 year old strawberry picker from Mexico. Never thought I would get to listen to an MIT course. Gracias!
Great course.Great teacher. How anyone could have given her a rating other than excellent teacher is bewildering to me.It would be a privilege to have a professor like her.Surely has the gift of teaching.
Hello,,,how are you doing,,hope you’re safe out there?
You can take courses from MIT classroom by sitting anywhere in the world... What an era to be alive! Thank you MIT OCW for making this happen.

I really hope this amazing lecturer is reading these comments. I've never felt so lucky to have an internet access before. Its 11.50 pm and I'm sitting here fascinated by the fact that I just joined a lesson I would never in a million years get the chance to attend, from my house in Turkey. If you can get the attention of someone that has 0 knowledge about this with an actual lecture at this hour, then you should have zero worries about your actual students. Thank you for this great service.
I have ADHD but I was just drawn to this discussion. Nancy is an amazing storyteller and truly an engaging instructor.
Pretty too :)
I was watching the latest Spiderman last night, and the characters there were talking about applying and going to the MIT. I think my phone heard that and recommended this!!! What an awesome professor! You just learn by looking at her.. Thank you, you smart and generous people!
crazy how phones are spyware
@@disrespect3 Lmao but i don't give a fuck if phones are spyware i just wan't to play watch, learn in it
Your phone doesn't "hear" whatever you are saying. It's a myth mate :)
These kind of things always spread from conspiracy theorists, people will often say that "my friend was talking about going to Canada and then FaceBook gave me ads for Hotels in Canada"
Well, I just want to say that coincidences happen, and besides... they could have been interested in Canada and searching about tourist places in Canada, which led Facebook to give you personalised ads.
Big companies like Meta (Facebook company was renamed 'Meta' in case you didn't know), Google etc do track you to give you personalised ads, ok? That's it. Your phones don't hear you and the things you say, myths do spread like wildfire and just want to clear this up :)
my cousin, an MIT graduate, did the special effects for Spiderman 2 and won an Emmy for it. Is that connected? (no, just bragging)
My father has early on-set dementia and this course has become very personal and impactful for me. Thank you.
I really like this lady. How did she learn to deliver ideas, concepts, and human experience in such an interesting way?

Homeschooling Mama of 5 who misses the lecture hall of the university and the buzz of learning....thank you for putting this online!!!
How is it even possible for students to sleep in such a wonderful lecture? She is wonderful! Inspiring!
I love how everyone is saying "wow what an amazing lecture can't wait to watch the rest!", but really only 5% at best will actually watch the next lecture (excluding the students who are forced to watch for their class). Yall just like to watch introductory stuff with fun facts and ideas. Sure it was an engaging lecture, but that's cuz it was something to make the students excited about the course. The hard (but probably more important) stuff no one wants to watch, so don't lie to yourselves.
That said, hats off to whoever actually fully watched the rest of the lectures.
One of the problems our society has right now is the knowledge gap between people like Professor Kanwisher (whom from where I sit, seems as though she may hail from Krypton) and the common citizen. The sophistication at the elite edges of the population far outstrips that of the average person. It is very important that we close that gap and videos like this help do that. Many thanks to M.I.T., Nancy Kanwisher, and RUclips.

My father-in-law had Parkinson's with similar symptoms to Bob. Oscar would get lost in his own home and have to be led to his bedroom. I always thought that spatial orientation was handled by the entorhinal cortex in the temporal lobe, but this is not the first time that I have heard of the parahippocampal cortex, place, locus, whatever. I am only 22 minutes into the lecture and already fascinated.
