I stuck around until the end Del and congratulate your enthusiasm and dedication to the cause! I've started a new self designed build and still figuring out how I'm going to do it. It's going to have a scarf joint which l haven't tried before. Had to cut it with a hand saw and it looks a bit rough at the moment but I think I can whip it into shape!
So I built number 2 in one sleep. Not quite under 24 hours but close :) we are going to a friend's cottage this weekend and I decided two days ago that I would build them a CBG as a gift. Anyway it's done and better than number one that took weeks ( I did break my foot just after starting it) thanks for all the great videos like this one. I have orders for four already. Better get crackin' after we get back from the cottage 😂 oh and one CBV violin.
My friend's son had the Roland Micro Cube so we had a little jam session. My friend was so excited about the guitar. He has been wanted to learn guitar for a few years. I taught him the 12 bar blues already. I had tried using thinner strings and tune to open G but it just didn't cut it. I ended up swapping the strings for thicker ones and went to EBE tuning. Much better.
Good lesson Del however I learned a big lesson yesterday. I tried to glue a fretboard onto a neck when it was 92 degrees in my garage. I failed miserably, the glue stayed thick and started drying too quickly. I couldn’t get it lined up set and clamped in time. I might have to star over. Glue all over, it was a mess. Never had that happen before. Thanks for your lessons. I took notes
I agree that the sound holes don’t have a lot of impact on the sound. I think because the box isn’t really set up as a good resonator space. The materials are pretty thick, shape of the space isn’t great, the neck is in the way of the loudest hole position. A good acoustic guitar has a drum-like hollow thump when you tap the top. But these aren’t high end instruments. They’re fun. The sound holes are a style opportunity.
Good advice. I tend to start with the box or body, and figure out what I want to end up with by working from the box out to the headstock. Either way, get it down on paper before you start cutting to avoid many of those "aw crap" moments.
I started a notebook of “build notes” a few years ago to document each build (size, scale length, parts used etc) in order to not feel like I was reinventing the wheel each time (“that last build’s neck size felt really good,… now, how wide and thick was it?!”) But, that only works when you remember to WRITE IT DOWN before you sell/give it away!!!! 😆 8:55 … a number guitar builders (Texas Toast Guitars in particular) like the open gear tuners… I get the rationale about the tuners, i.e. the gears should be pointed towards the box, however… there is is no back and forth play in the shaft when you have a collar (either one that screws in or one that’s just pressed in) that’s holding the shaft in place. There would have to be a lot of play of the shaft in the headstock hole for a “backwards” tuner to fail … 27:40 … I reuse the waste from the back angle cut underneath as it’s the same angle and so re-establishes the parallel of top and bottom so I can use the same thickness of support blocks in the box… 28:54 … AC/DC has a tune called “The Jack” 😆
Hey could you take a sec to explain distance and pitch/angle between hinge and bridge/saddle? I would greatly appreciate it.. I'm currently doing all the math and it would really help.
there is no science really… i usually allow for roughly an inch and a half of string on the backside of the saddle which allows for sufficient downward pressure (not too much) just enough to hold the saddle in place. it’s the “Goldilocks Zone”. 😏
anything and everything… ive often used 1/4 veneer. i’ve built from a pallet…i say use your imagination. you might stumble on to something you really like

Australian fan here.. cigar boxes are extremely rare ... what wood and dimensions could I fabricate a box from..
