So do you guys suppose the Taliban tune their trucks when they mount a howitzer in the bed of it 🤔
Roughly how much does it cost to get that work done?
Just got mine in the UK today guys thanks love the poster
This is exactly the quality content I expect from the worlds best 4wheel driving channel ON THE PLANET.

Scotty is such a brilliant guy. Sifting through all that data to find ways to tune a vehicle is truly impressive.
It is like he has done it before.
I have a good friend who's teaching himself tuning in the same way, even as a computer guy myself, I have trouble wrapping my head around all this. But he's made my little shitbox Yaris just a little more fun to drive, so it's awesome :D
@@eTiMaGo I've been slowly learning with a program like HP Tuners for over a year now. The more I learn, the more things like this really impress me. I love human ingenuity!
@Giveaway591 How about no!
Came for the entertainment, got educated to boot. Scotty aka Tuning Fork is a wealth of knowledge, the true definition of a tuner as he actually KNOWS what the heck he's doing. Nice to see this.
And he’s a stand up bloke to boot. No wonder MCM always use Scotty and Haltech
I kinda feel like you could get a Clarkson's Farm cameo with Tuning Fork by just mentioning that farm equipment can be flashed for more power, speed and fuel economy.
What
I wanna see a Lamborghini tractor get dyno tuned.

credit to Marty for asking all the right questions and to the tuning fork for having an answer to every single one!
he's really good at asking the questions we would be asking, and Scotty keeps his answers at the right tone for newbies. Particularly when Marty probably already knows this stuff. Its like he knows the audience and the kind of things they would be interested in
@@Willdu87 exactly that
Scotty is a gem! Protect that man at all cost!
I'm never going to tune or dyno a car, and have a small interest in others doing it. But I happily sat through this, as Scotty and Marty sat in another nugget just shooting the shit is what the internet is made for
Id love to tune, its just quite expensive. My current car is already tuned very well though from previous owner. It went from 210 stock to 282hk.
I love watching the series on the Luxy! Listening to Tuning Fork share his knowledge is outstanding!
I know it's diesels and not traditionally the content we go for. But watching tuning fork and the knowledge he has be presented is a privilege. Excellent excellent video.
Definitely recommend doing an intake clean due to the egr system on these, also I’m not sure if you guys know but the turbos on this model hilux are variable vein so the increase boost pressure with intake pressure/revs
Carbon cleaning service does wonders on diesels. Well worth it!!
Is that the same as the variable geometry Garrett turbos?
@@murry001 and non-diesels as well! Anything direct injection, particularly turbocharged will really benefit from a cleaning of the intake and valves around 100,000km. People talk shit about BMW's N54 needing the intake cleaned out because direct injection is shit and they make shit engines or something but it's just how direct injection works, there's no fuel washing over the valves cleaning them.
@@helplmchoking yep had my petrol cars done too, very good improvement :)
@@helplmchoking also helps to avoid cold stop start runs. And to flogg the engine so it doesn't foul up
I frigging love the knowledge shared by the Fork, the Tuning Fork!
I believe Scotty is one of the most valuable assets to the world of tuning. His skills and knowledge set are immense and I love watching him talk you through it. A very clever man of much value to the tuning community. Imagine MCM without him??
My first taste of the potential of diesel tuning was a mk4 ALH 1.9 TDI golf. Tune, injector nozzles, and intercooler made it into a fun torque monster of a daily driver. In stop and go traffic you could let the clutch out without and throttle input and it would creep forward no issues. Got 50+ mpg highway and would go over 600 miles to a tank. Made many trips across the US in that thing without any issues!
Nek mennet.... one of the hi output expert engineers in NZ does a build series on a nuke proof 1KD/KZ that eats 40 psi and sends it over to the MCM boys.
I always forget Marty has and loves his excavator
When are we getting a build series on the Kubota???
Underglow.
I don't know how he manages it, but Scotty gets even more mad respect from me every single time he's on the screen. What a legend.
Everything seems easy when you work with professionals and especially professionals who are passionate about the subject matter.
As a lapsed car head, I got boring and bought an old multiseat 109 Vito for the fam and crikey it was slow. Luckily the om646 in it is just a detuned version of the 115 (150hp vs 90hp for the "109" ) so a quick flash tune later and it gained more than 50% power and torque. Had to put a new clutch in, but so worth it. My boy started his mechanics apprenticeship recently and his workmates were like, your dad put a tune in a VAN? Yes I did... 100,000ks later it's clocked up 350,000, shows no sign of quitting and it TOWS 👍
Scotty really knows his stuff and enjoys his work. I'm Sure he dreads the call "can you tune this" and after saying sure lets play his fear becomes "oh heck not something so small again can i even get in it" I'd be interested to know the effect in 4wd as well as 2wd
Can you imagine having a friend like Scotty? He's a freaking legend,so bloody brilliant, thanks MEN, great video
Gotta check out the diesel scene in Thailand. They are extracting crazy power from these small diesels. One of their favorites is the Isuzu 4JJ.
Diesel power is fun. I miss my old Daihatsu Rocky with the 2.8 turbo diesel, slightly increased diesel flow on the pump and drove with a steady 0.8 bars of turbo boost. That thing was incredibly fast for what it was, and torque like no ones business. I had over 2 tonnes on the tow and had to back it up a hill to my friend's place. I just let the clutch out and the torque at idle engine speed was enough to drive it up without hesitation, didn't touch the accelerator.
I'm so glad someone finally said that more power is more efficient because the engine doesn't have to work as hard.
I got my car tuned and it uses less fuel because I dont have to flog it to go anywhere 😂
The crazy shit we could do with the Isuzu factory diagnostic computer back in the early 2000s was heaps of fun. You could live adjust almost any parameter whilst the engine was running, it was almost like real-time tuning.
yeah those isuzus are something
Isuzu pickups pick up a lot of power on remapping. Many of them run sub 10 second quarter miles (that includes some other supporting mods).
@@mathsunmasked56 I have isuzu cars from the 1990. They are great engine with most of the work toward torque even on petrol engine. On diesel it's even better. I have a 6.6 liter isuzu designed engine in my pickup truck. It's been great
Is it weird that this is the most I've ever been excited to watch a dyno tune 🤣🤣 It helps that I have a 94 hilux surf 3.0 1kz, and a 12 1kd hilux... But it also could be the discovery of the love of the tuning fork's love for diesels 🤣🤣🤣 To good!! Best 4x4 channel on RUclips!!!!
I could listen to you awesome Aussies talking about this stuff all day, especially since I had my car wrecked by a hit and run driver last week all the car talk is making me feel better.
Love my TDI, wish you guys would give diesel more love on the show
I love my TDI, once you've felt the torque its hard to let go
Marty's next car should be 2.4 D5 volvo
@@johnnybebad2384 Or something with some *proper* potential like an OM606 or an M57.
@@kristoffer3000This. I like my 1.9 TDIs but they won't hold a candle to an OM606 lol.
@@kristoffer3000 the D5 is no slug, over 210 as standard and with a just a stage one it would sit around 250. And then the best thing 5 cylinder noises, just remember to map out the egr and dpf so it can breathe properly
Given how popular the Hilux videos are I'm surprised this video isn't on the main channel
Oh wow, I thought I was watching this on the main channel, seemed worthy quality and relevant to a current build.
LOVE the tuning episodes. Scotty's a legend
17:00 if I remember correctly it took 5 years or so before anyone cracked tuning the factory ECU on a Toyota D4D. Was a bit of a hype in the 4wd world when they could. When I had a 07-12 ranger it was tuned but they couldn't do hiluxes at that time. Before that it was a dodgy rail chip or Steinbauerr unit.
Tuning-fork is my spirit animal. I love all the support he's given Mighty Car Mods over the years.
Only a great tuner like Scott is able to talk so openly and passionately about engine tuning. I loved it!
Is haltech coming up with a live tuning diesel Ecu module? Plenty of other options for it already from other suppliers
Really boring comment. Mate, your seat belt needs a little love. It looks like it has seen better days (16:30min) . Stay safe.
I've been driving diesel Ute's as my daily for about 12years now and automatic diesel utes are soul crushingly depressing. Manuals just bring them alive.
Diesel Power!
My god i’d love to have my BMW E82 123d tuned by Scotty, it’s already a peppy car with 450 N/m of torque, but i bet it would become a mad nugget with that kind if treatment
I have to agree with Scotty about the fuel filters, Change them every time You change the oil. Even Volvo recommends the fuel filters are changed at each oil change on My 1989 Volvo B10M Bus, Which they say is every 30,000km 3 months for route bus usage. But I do it every 6 months 30,000km which ever comes first, Maintenance definitely pays off as My bus has 1.7 Million kilometres on it at just shy of 34 years old and it’s only had 1 engine rebuild at 1.3 million km. So it’ll easily go to 2 million km before it potentially needs another rebuild, It’ll also be interesting to see what kind of Tune can be done on it as a Mechanical injection Diesel to bump it from the factory 245hp 890N-M torque to say 250hp 1000N-m torque since how it also hasn’t got any of the DPF / Euro emissions stuff on it.
16:55 Would be interessting to know if the DID1 from Baldur can be live tuned (it is an aftermarket stand alone diesel ECU).
Shoutout to the camera person, nice job 🤘
I love how passionate Scott is about his job and describing all that goes into every tune he does for MCM.
Defo would stick to the stage one tune as it has a lot more power and torque down low which is where you would use it every day.
Scotty is an artist! Those tables are beauty in the eye of the beholder! Excellent vid. Nice one.
So the obvious next question - do Haltech do diesel ecu's and are they live mappable?
You can tell by the way he talks, Scotty has a passion for teaching and educating others on something he's spent a lifetime learning :) what a cool dude.
I predict the next mod will be an EGT gauge!
i'm kinda surprised they didnt fit a temporary clamp one post turbo just to have an idea
The amount of knowledge I gain everytime Scotty talks is amazing.
i did a intake clean on my hilux before i got it tuned, i wonder if their hilux would benefit from the same clean to remove all the carbon etc
I would have had no idea scotty was into diesels! That man is a wealth of knowledge and all around legend
Scotty sounds like he wants to mod a Haltech ECU and have a plug in harness for this sort of stuff...
lol way more complex than it seems. there's very few diesel aftermarket ecus and waaaay off budget for not a racecar
Here in EU we regularly remap our diesels. Usually get a 25-30% increase in hp and torque with stock components.
actually its not just europe lol its any developed country
@@Nebbia_affaraccimiei reason why I was saying EU is because we drive alot of diesels, even most of our cars would be diesel over petrol
Gale Banks does a really good series on diesel tuning called killing a Duramax he puts loads of information on at various stages and explains it all he basically gets just over 1000bhp on stock internals
banks is the king of diesels.....
Is MCM TV2 the 2nd best 4wd channel on youtube then?
Great episode! This is really quite interesting, especially since we didn't get a diesel option here in the US for these trucks.
More diesel. Do a diesel race car build. It is so different from petrol we would all learn a lot.
Sharing this with a teacher friend of mine! I'll be using this as a teacher as well. Tuning fork, my friend I have held you as the best tuner and teacher a petrol head could have..
TurboYoda shares that spot with you, BTW.
If only Haltech made Diesel ecu's 😥
Let’s see they boys at the next Sydney dragway diesel night !! MCM vs Haltech
Is there nothing he can't tune?!?!?
Amazing
its a breath of fresh air to see a tuner that knows how to tune a diesel. Granted you want to keep injector dwell as short as possible (this is where oversized injectors come in) to help keep the injection event at between 5-8 degrees after TDC. This lowers EGT's, ARFs, AITs and with all that combined nets your more power with even less fuel. Diesel tuning is way more fun than petrol.
In my experience exhaust systems onto turbo diesel motors are excellent upgrades. Every turbo diesel vehicle i ever had as soon as the exhaust was upgraded it was like a tune in itself! It feels like about a 20% power increase. Ive done turbo diesel 1hdt landcruisers, ft cruisers, fte cruisers, hilux d4d, 4m41 Triton, td42 patrol, 3 litre patrol, the moment I added exhaust I could feel the power increase.
Now this is some entertaining stuff. If Marty ever decides to have a RUclips career other than making videos for the 38 fans on this channel, he should make a channel with videos where he mods vehicles and gets them tuned and tested on the dyno at the end of the build. Maybe get that other fella who does the news and fanking videos with him too. They could have the best four wheel driving channel on the planet before long, I reckon. That Tuning Fork guy should show up occasionally too.
Quick question, is Marty stoned in this video?
The very best part of watching Marty jam a straw into Scotty's brain every time you two get together is the way Marty bounces in with a perfect "backyard-mug" understandable connection. "Off the shelf dongles are great", "but they don't take account for your bigger exhaust or upgraded intercooler"..
Personally I'd donate my sixual organs to know 70% of what Marty knows, or just 35% of what Scotty know about carbon burners... So easily explained and fluid to watch whether you edit out the inevitable fuck ups or not.... As always, love your work!
with most modern dual cabs live tuning is possible with some pigyback ecus from companies like ecushop and alphatech. these offer huge gains i believe isuzu dmax 2014 model can make +100hp +200nm
Next episode on MCM Martin tunes his excavator... Lol
Just for reference, there are several aftermarket diesel ECU's available, the main problem is cost, and people with the skills to configure and tune them. I run an adaptronic ECU on my common rail diesel with my own logic / firmware, which enables live tuning, and live monitoring of just about anything. There are also emulators available that replace the memory chips in the factory ECU's (Mainly BOSCH EDC), which allow you to "live tune" them,as you are essentially just modiying the ecu's memory live, and the ECU dosnt know any better... Just thought some people may be interested to know :)
I could listen to Scotty talk all day.
What a legend.
Wow!! That was technically satisfying beyond anything on the Internet. Brings back memories from 2005 while I was doing my mechanical engineering degree and the passion I had for internal combustion engines.
Thank you for the awesome content.
As a high km (412k) hilux 1kd owner this is awesome ahaha, id love to see a haltech video on the 1kd
before you try tuning have you cleaned your intake an egr? at least added the 7mm hole restrictor plate if not the blocking plate? full service including new injecters? at 412k it should of had new injectors twice(every 200k) if none of this has been done then no decent shop will tune it until it's all been done
I love that you have demystified diesel tuning. I have wondered how this works and now I know. Gold! Thanks heaps MCM and Scotty, legends!
Super interesting! Love to learn more about diesel tuning
Great video and exceptional promotional spot. If I lived in Australia, I would definitely ask Scotty to tune my HiAce!
Do not go towards the light, Rodney!
Excellent video. I'm just starting to get into this sort of thing with an m57. I'd really like to hear more from tuning fork about bin editing and diesel tuning.
Darkside Developments and Kassel Performance are two I know that can spice up the m57.
Put a throttle controller in it… controversial I know. 😅
Used to drive one of these every day for work and by golly are they slow in stock form, even compared to other utes of the same era, i imagine a tune is almost a necessity with these
I feel like Marty would be a guy who is watching RobotCantina, kubota series.
Next episode...How to tune your farm equipment! YES PLEASE!
20:29 Tunning Fork "are you ready for more", Marty, just keeps talking
So happy to see winOLS being used 😅 proper work being carried out
I wish I had 83 kw to the wheels in my 70kw from factory at the engine rodeo
As You two age you're beginning to look like Harry and Marv from Home Alone.
At last!! Turbot Dizzler on MCM. I learnt a fair bit from this.
Question. How possible is it to alter the tune of a d4d physically as opposed to software? Skint 246000 miles d4d (1cd-ftv) owner wanting a little bit more.
Thinking resistors, potentiometers, vacuum cheats, etc
damn, my 2.2d jag now does 300hp and 590nm, its pathetic that a car like hilux doesnt even have 200hp stock :/
There are many turbodiesel cultures in southeast asian countries (like Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc). There are many modified and high powered Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-Max, etc.
We tuned our nisvara 2019 rx single T basic mods muffler delete k and n filter dosent sound silly or look silly like most choo choo train 4x4s.. went from 86rwkw to 116rwkw and over 120nm torque jump I think high 600nm.on factiry boost going in for a 3 inch dpf delete and a big front mount next week so be interesting to see what it spits out. Then down the track stage 2 turbo. Alot of fun 2x4 with a alloy tray. Gives most of em the chop chop
Interesting video... but improvements in performance does come at a long term cost which wasn't really discussed.
Is there anything Tuning Fork can't tune? The man is a total wizard!
That's terrible power for such a big engine.
The d4d engine in the Yaris makes 88 bhp and that's only a 1.4!
Looks like it made loads of smoke at 24:38 and later on the test drive Scotty was checking behind to make sure it wasn't smoking. "Rolling coal" isn't cool, it's a waste of fuel.
ok, now s369/80/1.0 as an atmospheric turbo.
and as far as live tuning diesels i thought mm3, Efi live and HP tuners could all live tune though it may just be the north-american market
I wonder if non IT-nerds people realize how INSANE the way Scotty extracts and rewrite the code from raw data is.
I didn't understand how much of the work is done by the program, but that just seem undoable to me. i'm an IT guy and if you told me I'd have to guess what was in a file by sheer looking at the data i would tell you you're crazy
Again, Scotty amazes me
I'm sorry but as A European I'm surprised that Tuning fork didnt mention anything about the DPF or EGR bc thats the first thing they decode when they flashtune here prob bc it limits the tuning and Being the diesel capital of the world and especially the Nordic I'm pretty sure they know but I dont know the regulations for Australia but prob they have it also, but interesting content as always :)
Ok, Mr Tuning fork, be expecting a call from Toyota. That is a company always looking to improve.
I change both lift pump filters and engine fuel filter every single oil change, it’s an extra 60$ compared to HPFP, injectors and lines which cost 10k
Marty is awesome interviewer. And Tuning Fork brings all the answers you can imagine. I was expecting lots of black smoke, but instead none of that and lots of good information.
Hard to imagine the gearbox broke with 90kw going through it. Must have had some fun😅
Grow a brain, Torque kills gearboxes.
Yeah the Gearbox broke 1 - 3 - 5 : That is the Auxillary-shaft moving out of place because of collapsed bearing; those three gears are on one shaft, and 2 & R are handled by another shaft, [a reversing-gear on the shaft for R, straight-through for 4] : the weakness of that design is that a shaft and bearings that can take the torque of 1st [very easy because it is a reduction gear] just plain fails horribly if a great amount is expected out of 5th gear: which is a multiplication-gear.
So big hills with big-loads, in top gear and heavy throttle: 5th-gear just kills the Aux-shaft-bearing.
Happens to a lot of Landcruisers with caravans; whether auto or manual they just blow-up their top-gear.
: For highest load operation don't use taller than the the straight-through gear, which on a traditional manual is 4th.
@@muzzthegreat interesting piece of information.
