    Great job guys, worked for Toyota for some years and particularly being from Africa we pretty much did Hiluxs and land cruisers all day everyday, just something to note on those 1kd-ftvs particularly with that age just best to change the injectors every 150 000kms they have issues, another fun thing that happens is the actuator for the turbo the bearings seize and you get a lack of power and you end up just changing the actuator, also that build of crap in the manifold is from the egr common job this side of the world

    Hope you guys find this useful. I'm A diesel mechanic and have worked on hundreds of hiluxes and 1KD's in general. One of the biggest killers of this engine is the size of the mesh on the oil pick up in the sump. It seems to be finer than most other cars leaving it susceptible to oil starvation as it builds up with sludge way easier than most other engines. if not serviced enough with quality oil the pressure will drop and It will go bang. Another issue is injector seals leaking combustion into the head causing excessive carbon in the oil. You will have A considerable amount of blow by due to the higher crank case preassure if the injector seals fail. You can look up the sump plug with A torch and see the pick up and clean it with brake cleaner without even pulling the sump off. The injectors them selves also have issues causes by lack of servicing or inadequate filtration if the engine rattles on cold start up its usually injectors on their last legs. Hope it's usefull. Keep the sick content coming.

    Head unit wiring harness adapters so worth it and a massive time saver. When I bought my impreza (not a wrx sadly) in 2010, the first thing I did was change the stereo so I could get my sub in there. I had always previously cut and soldered directly to the existing wiring, but since it was new, I thought I would splurge the $60 or so for the the subaru - iso and iso - Alpine wiring. Best $60 I spent. Took less than 45 minutes to completely replace everything and not a single bit of solder was needed. 8 years later I upgraded to a different Alpine unit with bluetooth, the plug was still the same, so super easy upgrade again.

    Great 4x4 guys. I really important thing to maintain with this engine to avoid catastrophic failure. The injector seats tend to weep which results in black crusty bits going into the oil and blocking the oil pickup strainer. Engine then starves for oil with the first point it stops oiling is the underside of the pistons. The pistons will overheat and you can guess the rest. Replace those injector seats and the oil pickup strainer asap and each 100,000km after that. It’s definitely your cheapest option and so easy

    I’d highly recommend throwing a brand new set of genuine injectors at it, fuel pipes, injector seats, MAP sensor filter, fuel rail gaskets, the whole works. If they’re never been done they’d be absolutely hammered. I’d advise not to install a catch can as they can mess with valve clearances. If you want to keep the egr clean a restriction plate with a 7mm hole is the way the go seems to be a legal grey area. Also make sure you’ve got the long suction control valve, not the short one as they can cause a lot of issues with stalling etc. Main thing is to make sure you get brand new genuine injectors x4 as remanufactured ones can cause issues. Injectors are the main cause of wrong combustion which is what causes these engines to crack pistons. Chips and tunes will cause wrong combustion and crack pistons prematurely too. Best to play it safe… a new long motor isn’t cheap. As other people have commented checking the oil pickup screen every service is a good way to tell if you have leaking injector seats (blow by). Hope this helps.

    I'm pretty sure you don't have to run the engine to flush power steering. You can attach a collection bottle to the return that flows into the reservoir and keep topping up while cycling the steering from lock to lock. This way you can completely replace the old fluid instead of just mixing in some new.

    • @cohenluxford4171
      @cohenluxford4171 2 года назад +1

      Running the engine will make this so much easier, was taught at TAFE to have the motor running. Also makes sense that on a belt driven system, the power steer pump will only work and pump oil when the motor is running, different for electric systems which you may be thinking of

    • @lxfguits
      @lxfguits 2 года назад +1

      @@cohenluxford4171 What I mean is that just turning the wheel lock to lock will pump it through. This goes for mechanical systems like this. The point is that if you use a separate collection bottle and dont run the return to the reservoir you don't just mix in new fluid but replace it. And since the engine isn't running you dont risk the pump running dry.
      EDIT: Just to clarify. I'm not trying to be a keyboard warrior saying that everyone is doing it wrong but just to point out that there is another perhaps an even neater way of doing it.

Replace all injector seals including a re seat of serviceable. Replace suction control valve. Clean pump pick up screen. Re program of any replacement injector. Replace engine oil and filter. Then fire it up. Do a small quantity injector amount adjustment. And is this in the reality of some one who is in the scope of "diy". All good if you want cracked pistons. When removing the calipers, sometimes air gets into the ABS module. You'll need a scan tool or jumpers-to-pins to cycle the ABS module to get the air out.
    The racer method, is to find a field, and to some hard stoppies to activate the ABS system. A few activations does it well, then re-bleed, and good to go.
