- At nearly 10 years old, Rich is asking the important question; Is rFactor 2 still worth it in 2023?
First releasing in 2013 it was beyond most other sims on the market. But with a difficult road through multiple owners, how is rFactor 2 a decade later and is it still worth it in 2023?
In this video Rich takes a look at the past, present and maybe the future of the title.

I got into RF2 really late (mid 2022) and will say that I'm totally obsessed. The driving feel is second to none. I hope they keep pumping new content.
Even still better than Automobilista 2.
Well said, and I agree. Out of all the racing sims, rF2 just feel´s the best In my opinion.
It's great, isn't it!
I haven’t picked this up but Rfactor 1 is still serving me well. I still can’t believe how old it is as wheel support feels great! Has the best career mode out of any sim too
Totally agree RF2 is incredible and with the LFM platform the online community is going from strength to strength!
Really trying to mention LFM every chance I get!
Where do you find online communities? I’m in Australia
rFactor 2 is a late bloomer , but it's so good now I really think it should have more acclaim than it generally gets . For me it's the most realistic of the sims currently available and that's what I want in a "sim" :)
Completely agree with you!
I held off for far too long, sticking to only AC and iRacing. When I finally took the plunge into rF2 on sale years ago I thought bloody hell, this is what cars actually feel like! Now with LFM it's actually my main sim.
The difference is massive isn't it
What is LFM
Im trying to get into all this stuff and live my best life, i got a meta quest 2 idk why it keeps crashing ghost of tabor(ik that last part was unrelated but if some one could help that would be great, i have a strong pc so im confused
@@UnkleTurbo use the internet my guy
@@JuanTorres-pn7us don't be a dick my guy, "LFM" stands for "Low Fuel Motorsport" and is a sim racing team and community. They offer a complete range of Seasons, Cup and Endurance races can be used completely free of charge!
Regardless of what happens to Motorsport Games, rFactor2 has a fantastic foundation to work with, and I honestly believe that Studio 397 (if liberated from MG should something happen to it) is still the studio that can carry it forward. What I believe rF2 really is some solid Product Management to take care of the shortcomings that have held it back for so long. In short, I think that rFactor 2 is a diamond in the rough that is simply in need of polish and a directing force to guide 397 in order to truly let it realize its potential.
Great comment and I agree.
I still think ams1 is the purest driving experience physics/FFB wise.
Thanks for making the vid.
I hope more people buy Rf2 and get involved in LFM.
I only bought the game last week. I also bought the Porsche 992. OMG it is so awesome especially in VR.
Anyone out there that likes sim racing NEEDS to have RF2.
In my opinion the best sim of them all.
strongly agree
I think rF2 should invest in a relaunch after they complete LeMans Ultimate, because once they made those models, first they can implement them all in rF2, plus now the UI is VERY VERY good
The way of creating races gives you a insanely and never seen in my opinion, liberty
I just came back to sim racing after finally upgrading. Holy cow. Between AC, AC2, RR and RF2, smooth on line racing and quality/quantity of 3rd Party, I'm kind of in a state of bliss. This is incredible.
thats exactly what i thought too.
Yup. There are still niggles (e.g HUD, slidyness of some cars, performance in rain /dark, small userbase LFM) but most of the people whining are doing so based on outdated opinions.
I know very little about cars, and even less about physics. my favourite part about playing rF2 is how the car evolved over time. You have to set your car up to handle the way you want it after 3-5 laps of running. Even still, a perfect setup on lap 3 might be awful on lap 10. It's a really cool experience.
I love this. I used to run a league years a go with GT cars. Winners tended to be those who considered the long game
The most realistic and most underrated racing-sim on the market in 2024.
I got 90 days of iRenting from Fanatec for $1 and I'm still wondering if it was worth it. rFactor2 has the best FFB of all the PC sims to date.
Love the BTCC stuff. And the Endurance pack. Personally, I’ve spent more time with GT3 in RF2 than I have in ACC, simply because the VR bloody works!
Yes the DLC is stupidly expensive - but it’s very very good.
The btcc stuff is superb. I agree.
The DLC is a lot more palatable now you only need one car per multi class/manufacturer I think
Price a more than decent if u wait for sales, and nothing to see with iracing’s prices
@@ducat7493 yeah I wait for sales before buying dlc too
Totally agree with you. I spent hu dreds hours in ACC. Now with rf2 in VR it's just amazing with these physics and the performance (rever g2, rtx 4090) looks awesome
Simply the best Sim on Planet Earth😍
Subbed buddy
rF2 holds a special place in my heart because it's what got me hooked on sim racing. I first tried it back in 2017 and it opened my eyes to what sim racing could be like at its most realistic. I'm a VR-only, single-player sim racer and rF2 is still my go-to. Their new 992 GT3 is my favorite car in all of sim racing, the AI is pretty good, and the DLC tracks aren't cheap but they're worth it in my opinion, just superbly detailed. The graphics tend to get some hate but I disagree - in VR, rF2 has the most "realistic" graphics in my option, much less cartoony than e.g. AMS2. The ability to mod is a huge boon, just look at how modding had kept AC alive and thriving for so long.
The part I don't love is that it can be hard to tell what's newer/better and what's not if you don't know. There's official content from the early ISI days that feels dated even though it's still first-party content. I also wish Reiza would update their DLC content, I at least want PBR Imola and VIR! and while I'm making a wish list, hopefully they add the new Mustang GT3 :)
i really don'tknow why so many people have so much problems with setting up rfactor2. i‘m playing it since 2015, at this time i also had some problems but was everytime able to fix them. The last 2 years there were so many good updates fixing this problems that i never have any problems at all, even on different PC systems. You need a fast PC and not a potatoe, that is maybe the main reason… or another reason is that many players come from consoles and just have not really the knowledge about computers… 🤷♂️
I feel like the console "issue" is a thing sometimes.
I think coming from something like gt7 or Forza Motorsport to Rfactor 2 can be very daunting....in just how much "work" there can be if you're not used to it.
It was GPL which got me into sim racing many years ago, so with that in mind, I am looking to something that allows for the beautiful details of the cars of that era. Let alone the track. it sounds like refactor 2 may be it, but I will not doubt need a top end pc.
It is now 2024. I still like RFactor 2 for the mods produced for the game. I have all the tracks to do a complete Nascar or Indycar series. The AI in RFactor 2, at least for me, are fun to race with and I do just short races just for entertainment. Lately, I do not do any online racing, don't have the time for it. I don't have any problems running the game and I race with VR in RFactor 2. I have original RFactor 1, but I kind of retired that game and haven't played for years now. RFactor 1 Graphics is not as good as RFactor 2.
Thanks for your video and take care.
Got me hooked on simracing again. RF2 is a hidden gem. The road / tire feel is unmatched. Can't wait for good matchmaking multiplayer with safety ratings.
Well you got it
Thank you for your in depth opinion! I´m quite interested in buying this one, the physics seems to be notch, and that what matters most to me, not pretty graphics. 🙂
RFactor 1 and 2 still are very great simulation racing games.
very good video
indeed the progress still happening and thats the point no matter what we experienced for many years.
lets hope for more solid progress in 2023
Thanks! Let's hope so!
Tested yesterday, and the Sim has improved a lot! Phsycs and graphics are really good!
Will try VR tonight, heard is much better then ACC(which sucks!)
Main problem is the same as automobilista 2, not enough online multiplayer races, lack of people online... that is why I my main simulator is ACC.
Wish LFM had fewer options maybe only OpenWheel and GT4, that would increase number of people racing.
It's beatiful in VR. much better than ACC. Graphics nearly maxed out + 1,2 SS with reverb g2, rtx 4090, 90fps most of the time
Its definitely worth it for the BTCC content alone. Yes its optimisation is poor at best, but when it works its still awesome.
I just got this gameand this is the best sim I've played yet
thank you for your analysis, i just got into Rf2 as i was thinking going back to iracing, but the price just scared me away.
2;50 did i hear right u only need to own what you want to drive!? this could be a game changer for me!
Yes mate. You still must download those you're not driving (I'm honestly not sure how this works) but you only need own one.
The others you just can't select to drive.
@@pitlanes ok will test with BTCC ltr n let u know
thanks for reply!
I think studio 397 have done a tutorial video too pal
I have £24.99 pending on my Steam wallet and I am contemplating buying rFactor 2. You mentioned that extra cars are like £4 each and tracks £8 but what content do you get with the standard £24.99 package? I am coming from ACC and I am looking for more variation in the car and classes from BTCC, Formula E and open wheel racing to LMP cars.
I have been racing rf2 since they launched race control and I can't drop it. AC feels like a console game after rf2. Driving experience is far superior in my view. I have not tried acc or iracing yet.
I'm stunned at the positive comments here, I just paid $43AUD for this so called sim and it is HORRIFIC!
I'm Damm pissed off, the graphics are a discrace. I come from ACC and Automobilista 2 and I expect this to be nearly as good but it is like playstation 1 graphics AND physics.
Have I downloaded a different version to some of you guys on here?
Some reviews on steam echo my thoughts so how can this be that this video portrays a different game to what I'm playing!
Not really sure. To say PS1 Physics and graphics is an extreme stretch, unless, of course, you're trying to play it on an actual potato.
It wouldn't do for us all to have the same opinion, though. The world would be a boring place :)
@@pitlanes My PC is good enough to run ACC very well... ACC is the most resource hungry game out there so... It's not that
@@nickn8812 So you did refund the game then if the graphics are so terrible for you....right?
@@labpong7562 I didn't think I could even get a refund how do I do that coz I will do it right now
@@nickn8812We're not telling you.
Agree great game, just got triples and having some difficulty in settingit up, half of my side monitors are black, do you have a suggestion for this? Thanks
When people arguing iRacing vs ACC, This game is the third choice and that is good
rFactor 1 is still the best sim, rF2 has million times less mods (+non-free), and it requires too high-class PC. But in terms of physics and graphics rF2 is for sure the best sim.
i really dont have the luxury to invest in multiple games...i can buy maybe a single gt3, a prototype and a tcr and thats about it...i would rather invest in tracks instead of cars...assetto corsa is great but the online is lackluster with very few servers that host races with mods...
You only need one vehicle ☺️
My opinion is rF2 hits the sweet spot between price (not counting DLCs), modability (Is that a word?), accesibility in terms of PC specs and futureproofing.
Yes, it's not a perfect game, the content handling for example is sometimes a pain in the arse, and sometimes red flag due to server crash is kinda frustrating. But I kinda get why some communities are still playing rF2 even though the users aren't that big.
Best ever racing sim needing your best credit card ready .
This sim makes you want to stay out of real life debts to keep up to date with the dlcs :P
Most expensive sim in computing history with most realistic experience on a car in your gaming room :).
Please avoid racing with keyboard or gamepad to enjoy the full xp.
Ah, and please take out the raceline when u are on track if you tell ur parents that u will be a content creator, the raceline hurts the spectator eyes, believe me.
It has the best physics and tire model and therefore is the most satisfying experience 😌
Recently set up sim rig and started playing through them all.I was having fun but nothing was exciting. Last to try was refactor 2 again. Why the fuck didn’t I try it again first it’s unbeatable in every way especially in hdr.
Try as i might i can't get this to run on my pc. I reinstalled it last week and worked for a couple of days now stopped again.
Is the base game worth if I'm not planning to go online?
Never got through the horrible ui.
AMS2 is the best in VR. RF2 doesnt even start up for me, so its trivial
Ams2 has the best vr optimzation. No question. The engine fits super good for us vr users. With a beefy system rf2, asetto corsa...yes ans even acc can look good with 90fps
Planning to do a le mans race with a few friends this weekend. Would rFactor 2 be a good option for just one team playing against ai?
Yeah I think recently they updated the AI to be much better with multiclass
@@pitlanesDoes the game offer the ability to switch drivers easily?
Man I'm super tempted to buy this it's just under $3 on G2A so if it sucks or gets revoked by Steam it's $3 measley dollars yeah I'm gonna gamble and do it I just wanna know how a 10 year old game looks this good and how does it compare to ACC and regular AC I got a beefy 3080 running this with max settings and high fps well no challenge at all I run ACC maxed out in 4k at over 120fps easily taking full advantage of my monitor that's 4k 120 also how does this game handle a wheel and does Moza work in this game
Totally agree! 🤜🏼🤛🏼
My favorite game of All Time
Worth more than ever!
Thank you for short explanation
You are welcome
Even with LFM its almost dead only at certain hours in a day there are ppl playing it, having to own 1 car in a multicar/class race update came way too late...
I'd be inclined to agree. Though I feel lots of people are in leagues and have been years.
I think the player base is there - well it must be or the sim wouldn't exist.
Just need to get people on it
Nah mate LFM will only grow the Rf community as it did with acc.
rf2 has landed for 2024 !!
I bought it and the car sets just all seemed like an off brand version and the physics felt more like a console game compared to iracing and acc and ac.
You have something very wrong, then.
How would you compare to Automobilista 2?
I prefer rF2 but AMS2 is still awesome
LMU will be great in 10 years
after moving to ams2, there is no going back to rf2
Thx, i will get in it again!
The UI is clunky, the online is pretty mediocre, but the physics are still one of the best.
Rfactor 2 simply is the best sim. Compared to it all the other sims feel like games.
rf2 best sim 100% just returned from iracing
def worth it 100%
300h on acc and iracing, the only sim i continue to enjoy is rf2
After iRacing, rFactor2 is the only sim worth having. All the others are wank.
Assetto Corsa ist everything but wank
@@JamesPeer-g8p Each to their own, I guess. The AC feedback on SC2p feels terrible to me.
To put it simply.
it's the best sim.
All the other so called sims are glorified arcade games
10386 Maritza Extension
RF2 cool FFB but it's hard to drive the tracks are so ugly it was drawn by a pencil
Are you, in fact, running it on a pencil?
Oddly enough , I find Rfactor 2 renders a far more natural and convincing image in comparison to AMS2 and ACC. I find the latter two far too glitzy and ‘ cinematic / photographic ‘ in terms of lighting . The version of Oulton Park for Rfactor 2 is to me the most faithful sim rendition in my opinion.
Can I use a 800$ gaming laptop with 8 ram?
I'm doubtful. I suppose it depends what graphical capabilities it has
@@pitlanes how do I check?

Yes it is good
I heard motorsport games and i had a stroke
70 percent of cars have terrible sound.
Auto rotation,broken.
Some mods are terrible.
Noone online for daily racing events.
Graphics dated compared to the amazing modded AC.
They left the wreck and 300 dollars of dlc for LMU.
5753 Taurean Brooks
Is good but has no players
Max Verstappen says RF2 is trash...
Max Verstappen is also sponsored and paid by another racing game. Making his public opinion a bit pointless.
I think he refer to the multiplayer because rfactor 2 online is unstable
Oh man you gotta pay for all the cars d don't tell me this is like IRacing please no
Willms Route
36096 Elisa Landing
lol It has never been worth ANYTHING.
As soon as AC (early access) came out in 2014, rFactor 2 was already buried 6 feet under.
I honestly felt like rf2 is the worst feeling game that I have next to maybe race room... I also have a hard time getting immersed with the ps 2 graphics model... Maybe with the new wheel, I should revisit the game to see if it feels any better but those graphics will forever be a hiccup for me.. One of the many reasons that I don't like iRacing either... Immersion is a big thing for me and it's second behind the games feel in level of importance...
PS2 graphics? Sure you have the right game?
@@pitlanes yes.... I'm sure.... I mean they aren't quite that bad but they aren't much better either...
Nice video, but my opinion is, for newcomers NO IS NOT WORTH YOR TIME, rf2 is still a buggy mess and when you want the perfect experience you need to fine tune the sim with a text editor :). also after every update some mod''s will be fucked up (I think Motor"Shit"Games want you to leave rf2 and then buy the shit like Nascar and when it is out they IndyCar) rf2 is for the people they have to many time on the hand to mess round with it.
Yeah, no to all of this 🤣
RF2 spoilt ACC for me, the FFB is so much better I don’t even bother with ACC anymore

@@pitlanes that's a lot easier said than done. Really shouldn't be that difficult. I found the uninstall quite satisfying and easy, unlike every other setting. Bye bye RF2.
It's about three clicks 🤣
