the stardew valley board game is actually such a good worker placement game, there’s lots to do, lots of choice and customization, different goals and buildings every game, and a good amount of luck to keep things exciting.
I'd say Primal: The Awakening deserves a mention. Learning boss patterns is a core element of so many video games and I think Primal captures that feeling really well.
Kefka is such a good choice. And unlike Sephiroth, Kefka actually succeeded in destroying the world. My favorite villain of all time is Psycho Mantis from the original Metal Gear Solid, though. It blew my 14-year old's mind when I realized just how much a designer could play with the fourth wall.
Nemesis I only saw playthroughs on and was one I would recommend to gamers I think. Especially who love survival horror. The boardgame is something I would love to have, but I think I wouldn't have the time for.
As a video gamer myself, this was a fun video. I particularly like calling 7th Citadel (and Continent) a "point & click adventure" style game. That's brilliant. Very accurate. Also, a future addition to this list could be Pixels & Polygons. The crowdfunding campaign isn't available yet, but this is one I have my eye on.
As someone who went from video games to board games, I'd rather recommend something that video games can't do. Upkeep, management, timers and setup and teardown will always be superior in a videogame that takes care of all that for you, so if you sat down and played something like Spirit Island with someone used to strategy video games, they'd just get frustrated by all the downtime. I myself got interested in board games because I got the digital version of Mysterium, and I thought the game was so different from anything I played before and was used to seeing from board games. So I'd either recommend games with a significant tactile or visual appeal like Azul or Terrorscape, or something with novel concepts that people outside the hobby wouldn't associate with a board game, like The Crew or Mysterium.
You make a good point there. I love both video games and boardgames. My husband loves video games too and we often play together, but I can't really get him to play boardgames with me. And my husband says it everytime I try to get him to play with me, a video game does all the math, and a pc can manage very complicated math that just isn't fun in a boardgame, also yeah no setup time. I now asked duel of middle earth for my birthday and he promised to play it with me. I hope the quick play and that you really need to watch what the other is doing is enough to make him get to play with me once in a while. We only play tiny epic galaxy together sometimes, because it is quick to play. Still little boring to him, but quick enough that he doesn't mind too much. So I do understand and agree with your point in this.
Ultima Online! YES! Blew my mind. My first time playing, a friendly stranger took me on a tour, he showed me how to hunt, how to harvest, how to craft and ended up taking me to a player run inn, where i was invited to a Drunken Rhymer competition, the following saturday.. Bloodborne would be my second most favorite game. Third would be Warframe.. best quest in any game: The Second Dream. Talk about having your mind blown.. 😊
Shoutout to Frag, the first breakout board game hit I can remember that was a true implementation of arena multiplayer shooter games (I'm sure there were others before it, but Frag was a condensed, streamlined FPS game on the table).
This was fun! I got into board games around 12 years ago from being so sick of video games. If you want a gateway board game for a video game player, Red Raven games are the way to go imo. Western legends is an excellent pick too!
My Borderlands 2 save was over a month of real time. If you count an entire series though, Football Manager has hit thousands of hours since I started playing it in 1994ish.
My favorite video game (still) is Heroes of Might and Magic 3. The board game that captures that closest that I've played is Mage Knight. You have a hero who wanders around exploring, fighting wandering monsters, hiring an army, and taking over different types of towns (they are called keeps, mage towers, and cities in Mage Knight). I'm not sure that the length makes it a good first foray into board gaming.
The Dark Souls Board Game boss fights are very interesting and feel like a master-able AI. Just like the video game. It’s true though that the rest of the game needs LOTS of work.
Dear, Joey. I suspect you will find something to like in all of the Mad Max movies. I hope this helps: If you want to see more of a drama where you know events will keep escalating with tragic consequences and will also include a scene that Alan Moore would later copy for Watchmen then see the first movie. If you want to see the start of the vehicle mayhem along with a touch of dark Aussie humor and razor blade boomerangs then see the second movie. If you want to see Tina Turner run a small trade town and you're in the mood to chant "master blaster! master blaster!" at your screen then watch the third movie. If you want your vehicular mayhem more refined with a higher budget and a strong female lead then watch the fourth movie. If you want to turn the tables and let me know what to expect then watch the fifth movie because I haven't seen it yet
Borderlands the board game from Monster Fight club is so thematic & resembles the video game so well, from the Spotlight, the Claptrap humour plus ton of ammo 😮 🤯 downside, if playing solo, you’ll need to control & navigate all 4 characters whilst playing solo
Death Roads All Stars. If you enjoy Thunder Road Vendetta but prefer a more realistic approach (accounting for post-apocalyptic artistic license) similar to Mad Max: Fury Road, DRAS should definitely be on your radar. There are numerous cars, drivers, and loadouts in the base game, allowing for many combinations. Additionally, the expansions offer even more options. I backed the All-In tier during the crowdfunding campaign, but The Knights of Unity's webpage for the game is no longer available. TKoU developed a Steam version titled "Death Roads: Tournament," which is available and has an 81% positive rating. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it, winning with every car and driver combination while unlocking all of the loadouts. I highly recommend it. Quest for the Lost Pixel, Adventure Realms, and Overboss are also on my list.
I'm kinda surprised One Deck Dungeon didn't make anybody's list; it's a pretty faithful reproduction of a rogue-lite dungeon crawler. No Under Falling Skies either? Maybe because they're both solo primarily(can do One Deck at 2, or 4 with two copies) games they didn't make the list, but I would heavily recommend those as well.
I know they went the Unmatched route, which is fine, but I feel like Dice Throne is my fighting game. I think Arkham Horror LCG could make the cut. Some of the story I can see playing out in my head as cut scenes from a video game.
As a gamer of both types. I would say these are some of my picks to get a video gamer go more into board games. Sleeping Gods, gives that adventure game feel. Twilight Imperium for the 4X folks, I know it's not really 4X it does have the same feel to me. Heat: Petal to the Metal for people that like racing. Surburbia for city building. I got my friend that plays a lot of cities skylines into this game so much so that he went and bought it himself. And while I play a lot of RPGs in video games, I only play D&D and don't really get into the RPG board games because I would rather just play D&D.
Wing Commander 3 (i think) had Maek Hamill, Biff from Back to the Future, Malcom McDowell (Clockworl Orange) and Gimli from Lord of the Rings. Best cast ever.
Skate summer would be a good pick. It captures the push your luck mechanic of long combos in tony hawk pro skater. Also, trick shot is capturing the essence of an old school arcade nhl game pretty well.
Joey - I don't know why Zee was making it so difficult, but just watch "The Road Warrior" once and see how you feel. Then watch "Fury Road". They are two of the greatest action movies ever made, period. You won't regret it.
Surprised nobody had real-time games like Kitchen Rush or Kites on their lists. I hadn't considered Project L, but I guess if you put on Tetris music it would fit right in. Mostly this proved that we don't have the same taste in videogames, haha.
Did the guy who has Ghost Stories in his top 100 just complain about dying all the time? ;-) Tom: "...I am not taking this route of 'Hey, you like this video game? Well, here is the board game that matches its name.'" Zee: "Correct. I also avoided doing that because it is a little obvious." Also Zee: Suggest the board game adaptation of the video game Super Motherload: Super Motherload. I did not expect to here some love for Vigilante 8.
Project Elite is great, but CMON effectively just completely destroyed it. The base game has very little replayability, and you'll need to shell out anywhere from $400-800 to get the rest of the game.
I love Deep Rock Galactic video game but playing the board game reminded me how impossible it is to port the same feeling of a tactical real time shooter into a board game. It was fine but just felt nothing like the video game
It was a nice touch having Tom Vasel faceplant during the intro. I vote to keep that as the standard. ; )
Now we need a top 10 based on video games list.
I would like to nominate Bullet❤ for the Arcade Puzzle Battler category (a la PuyoPuyo, Bust a Move, Tetris etc.)
Seconded.
To be fair, the original "Slay the Spire" computer game is basically a card game.
the digital part is just doing all the maths for you lmao
But it's the best computer game of all time....all time....or maybe that I have 2000+ hours in it makes me obligated to say that.
@@BunjiBee Nah some of the mechanics just wouldnt work in a physical game
I liked your review and also the added alternatives suggested at the end. Thank you for the upload.
BTW Super Motherload was a video game before it was a board game.
I can’t believe they are too old to have played it on Miniclip… Motherload is one of the games I played the most and was terrified of the end
the stardew valley board game is actually such a good worker placement game, there’s lots to do, lots of choice and customization, different goals and buildings every game, and a good amount of luck to keep things exciting.
I'd say Primal: The Awakening deserves a mention. Learning boss patterns is a core element of so many video games and I think Primal captures that feeling really well.
Only seen primal on playthroughs, but it came up in my mind too, I think that boardgame mimics a boss battle in a game pretty well.
Ah yes! That was the villain that came into my mind too, I was so blown away as a teenage girl by the 4th wall, I loved it!
Love Zee’s mention of Vigilante 8! Amazing game!
Yeah that really unlocked a core memory for me. I had completely forgotten about that game
So good!
I'd throw 'Adventure Tactics' into this list.
Great list and conversation. Very entertaining, thanks.
Zee hit it on the nose, Ninja Gaiden Black was the first game that came to mind for hardest game I’ve played.
I bought Bushido specifically because in his review, Tom compared it to the fighting game Bushido Blade. It did not disappoint. I love that game.
Nemesis for survival horror! 😊
Nemesis I only saw playthroughs on and was one I would recommend to gamers I think. Especially who love survival horror.
The boardgame is something I would love to have, but I think I wouldn't have the time for.

Primal Rage is the game Zee was talking about around 10 min mark
Great video. Lots of fun this one 👍🏻🎲
Joey talking about Castlevania makes me think we’re best friends now! 😂
Yes, Zee, Command & Conquer, what classic times with that series
my favorite board game of all time is Metal Gear Solid and the actual board game is coming out this December ... CMON better not screw this up!
I'm also highly anticipating this!!!
TOM your number one is an absolute banger!! Glad you are recognizing that game!
Ok Tom is now my favorite at Dice Tower. Kefka is indeed the best villain/boss of all time.
Ultima Online! YES! Blew my mind. My first time playing, a friendly stranger
took me on a tour, he showed me how to hunt, how to harvest, how to craft and ended up taking me to a player run inn, where i was invited to a Drunken Rhymer competition, the following saturday..

Except that it included division. People already do a lot of multiplication and adding in games. Who wants division! :)
Sleeping Gods for the old school Zelda pick was the first i thought about.
I love Sleeping Gods. I just finished up my second campaign of Distant Skies yesterday. I find them to be some of the best solo adventure games.
This was fun! I got into board games around 12 years ago from being so sick of video games. If you want a gateway board game for a video game player, Red Raven games are the way to go imo. Western legends is an excellent pick too!
Fun list! Can't believe no one mentioned Mechs v Minions!
My Borderlands 2 save was over a month of real time. If you count an entire series though, Football Manager has hit thousands of hours since I started playing it in 1994ish.
It was called Championship Manager back then if I remember rightly.
@@TeamCGS2005 different game series.
Just like FIFA/ea FC and PES/eFootball.
Yes, it was Mark Hamill in Wing Commander 3. The first WC to feature FMV cutscenes. WC3! Mark Hamill vs The Kilrathi!
I absolutely love these countdowns! The music and graphics are always on point.
Chris did the graphics, David Culling did the music
Zee's a real one for Vigilante 8, I also played that one more than Twisted Metal
For strategy/civ gamers - Three Kingdoms.
For sandbox/space gamers - Xia: Legends of a Drift System.
Yeah, Xia gives me an old-school Elite vibe. Man... I put in a lot of hours of Elite back in the day on my Commodore 64. ;-)
I applaude you didn't use this to put 'Video Game Champion' in one of the lists, but... you really could've mentioned it in the end :-)
Hey Joey, the Castlevania Anniversary Collection is free on the Epic Games Store until Nov 22 if you game on PC.
I still remember when Tom 'killed' Luigi with a gavel. RIP Luigi.
chiptune dice tower theme is on point!
I think one of my favorite Castlevania's was PS2's Lament of Innocence.
Have you played Heroes of might of magic 3 the board game?
@Izinaima no
There's a new ruleset for Dark Souls which improves it a reasonable amount.
Couldn't get worse.
The Dark Souls Board Game boss fights are very interesting and feel like a master-able AI. Just like the video game. It’s true though that the rest of the game needs LOTS of work.

Vigilante 8 2nd Offense!!! Awwww yeah!!! Good times
Borderlands the board game from Monster Fight club is so thematic & resembles the video game so well, from the Spotlight, the Claptrap humour plus ton of ammo 😮 🤯 downside, if playing solo, you’ll need to control & navigate all 4 characters whilst playing solo
Best board game based on a video game is Fortify which is just a board game version of Rampart! Such a fun NES game.
Under Falling Skies
yes!
snake? .. snake? ... snaaaaaaaaaake!
pum-pum pum-pum-pum ... .. pum, pum, pum!
Death Roads All Stars.

First time I've heard someone remember the same part in Resident Evil that scared the crap out of me! Those damn dogs, Tom lol.
My pick would be Battle At Kemble's Cascade.
🤘🏾props to Twisted Metal, that and Doom with MK was my childhood.
But Twisted doesn’t get enough love.
I know they went the Unmatched route, which is fine, but I feel like Dice Throne is my fighting game. I think Arkham Horror LCG could make the cut. Some of the story I can see playing out in my head as cut scenes from a video game.

And while I play a lot of RPGs in video games, I only play D&D and don't really get into the RPG board games because I would rather just play D&D.
Love that Zee is all about the original XBOX. Scariest video game though is F.E.A.R.
Wing Commander 3 (i think) had Maek Hamill, Biff from Back to the Future, Malcom McDowell (Clockworl Orange) and Gimli from Lord of the Rings. Best cast ever.
Now we need a list of video games recommended to board gamers.
If only they knew video games as well as they know board games
Love the chip tune!
Favorite video game character... Minsk and Boo
41:06 that's Vigilante 8, still plays great in an Android ;) I prefer Vigilante 8 2nd offense but both are top notch. Killer soundtrack too.
For those who like old school map layouts like super mario world id recommend Overboss
If you enjoy Moving Out I would suggest "Overcooked", "Lovers in Dangerous Spacetime" or "Broforce".
All very enjoyable couch co-ops.
Love it! Every 100 years!
Can you guys do a catchapalooza for deep rock galactic?
Surprised battlecon lost to unmatched
Unmatched is great. I also love the app version.
Massive Darkness is basically Diablo … Should of been on this list!
Yes! That’s a very good one.
It was all about sweet tooth and Axel in twisted metal!
Axel is such a cool design!
Wow that intro 8bit song slaps
Adrenaline did not get enough love. Glad to see it on the list though!
no under falling skies ? :(
Surprised nobody had real-time games like Kitchen Rush or Kites on their lists. I hadn't considered Project L, but I guess if you put on Tetris music it would fit right in. Mostly this proved that we don't have the same taste in videogames, haha.
Yes! Kitchen rush is essentially like „overcooked“ (one of my favorite games on the switch)!
Tom dressed like Luigi! He must have set that up!
Did Zee say that Left 4 Dead, which came out 15 years ago, is "kind of a new thing"? XDD
Still love playing Gears of War the board game
No Sleeping Gods? That game is an adventure video game printed on cardboard. Definitely #1 on this list.
What, no love for the Jetpack Joyride BG? 😂
Did the guy who has Ghost Stories in his top 100 just complain about dying all the time? ;-)
Tom: "...I am not taking this route of 'Hey, you like this video game? Well, here is the board game that matches its name.'"
Zee: "Correct. I also avoided doing that because it is a little obvious."
Also Zee: Suggest the board game adaptation of the video game Super Motherload: Super Motherload.
I did not expect to here some love for Vigilante 8.
What about Civilization A new dawn (including the Terra Incognita expansion)?
59:50 "what's your scariest *board* game you've ever played" ;-)
Zee's take on Dark Souls is 100% correct.
Also "My number 10 is for anyone who loves tech tr..." Beyond the Sun. I'm amazed nobody in the chat called it instantly before the sentence was done.
Project Elite is great, but CMON effectively just completely destroyed it. The base game has very little replayability, and you'll need to shell out anywhere from $400-800 to get the rest of the game.
Vigilante 8 was so good!!!
I fight them every 100 years is a beautiful recovery 😂
Vigilante 8! Yes that game was sooo good hha
I love Deep Rock Galactic video game but playing the board game reminded me how impossible it is to port the same feeling of a tactical real time shooter into a board game. It was fine but just felt nothing like the video game
Robo Rally, Heroes of Might and Magic - The board Game, Dead Cells, Anno 1503...
Zee and Tom, please go play Red Dead Redemption 2 all the way through. It is hands down the best story I’ve ever played!
Both Red Dead Redemption games were gems. I much prefer them to the GTA series.
How was there no Skate Summer??!?!
No Boss Monster?!
Project L is awesome!
Sounds like Zee gotta git gud ;)
Skyrim is such a bad game imo. Boring gameplay.
what about the the skyrim lego(ps5) board game!!!
I can’t say that I agree with the comment about Dead by Daylight board game. It is both super fun and very much like the video game
Best Music- Mega Man 2
King and Assasin DELUXE EDITION. Man, i don´t even know there was a normal edition!!
We need to abandon boardgamegeek and start using a new page of deeep games: Boardgame enZeeclopedia now i need to play Super Mother Load
Zee … you are looking for Assassins Creed Odyssey, which is Greek, but you are correct: best AC in my opinion.
Witcher Old World not being on this list is wild. Or Video Game Champion.
